Recover deleted photos backed up on Time Machine

Hi, my name is Rod and I am a long time Mac user.  Some years ago I encouraged my daughter to start backing up her 2009 MBP on Time Machine and bought her a 1 Tb external HD for that purpose.
What I did not know was that as her MBP had limited storage and began to run out of space she had been deleting photos from iPhoto assuming they were all backed up on TM.
She does not know when or how many photos were deleted over a period of a couple of years.
So she can of course restore to a previous date but then iPhoto will not include the photos added since that date (if I understand TM restore function correctly).
My question is, how can she recover all of the photos from the TM backups from the first backup to the current one and consolidate them into one file.
Many of her early photos are precious records of her first baby, wedding etc.
Any suggestions of software that can achieve this or better yet methods that can be employed with her MBP and existing software would be much appreciated.
With thanks,
Rod

Just tested this out in Snow Leopard and it may work in later versions vs restoring the libraries.
1. I opened up an Iphoto Library on my desk top EVENTS option (this is one I use for test prints sometimes - so no risk)
2. I entered time machine
3. Time machine then allowed me to back up through time until I found an event I wanted
-- the bottom bar had 2 options restore all  -- and just restore.
4. I highlighted the event I wanted and clicked on RESTORE
-- all of the pictures of that event were restored to the current library.
--   the restore does allow you to filter out or accept duplicate pictures.

Help wanted, I am unable to recover lost photos from iPhoto in Time machine.
I can find lost documents OK, but nothing from iPhoto 08.-Chatch

Hi Larry, they were in trash, but I deleted trash because I thought that time machine went back in time and found them from an earlier date? Is this not so?-Chatch

  • Can't delete files backed up in Time Machine

I use Time Machine to back up my MacBook Pro to NAS on my home wifi. I have a large file in my downloads folder that I have moved elsewhere and I don't need backed up. When I enter Time Machine's 'Star Wars' window and select the file and choose to delete all instances of it from the drop-down from the 'cog' icon in the Time Machine Finder, then I OK the warning that I can't undo the delete. Then - nothing happens! The file remains there! My question is: how does one delete files from Time Machine?
I would be grateful for any suggestions.

... Can anyone recommend a brand of NAS, such as Synology, that works properly with TM backups?
The exhaustive list of devices supported by Time Machine amounts to the following:
AirPort Time Capsule's built-in hard disk (any model)
External USB hard disk drive connected to a Time Capsule (any model)
External USB hard disk drive connected to an AirPort Extreme (current model only)
A hard disk drive directly connected either to the source Mac, or a Mac on your local network.
    That is all.
Use whatever backup device you want, but you should be aware that this site is full of reports of misery from hapless individuals who had been using third party NAS devices for Time Machine backups, only to find that they were incomplete, corrupted, or useless in the dire circumstances in which they were required. Apple won't care if you lose your data while using a Time Machine configuration specifically excluded from their technical support documents.

  • Putting deleted files back on my time machine

The other day someone got on my computer and wanted to delete things.  What they did was go into my time machine and deleted all my back ups from yesterday to 2009!  Those folders are sitting in my trash right now but every time I try to move them back into time machine it tells me it can't do it.  If I open some of the folders in the trash or even the ones I have copied on the desktop it still says that it cannot open items.
I have been on the phone with apple for over an hour and they are saying there's nothing they can do but to try this so here I am.

You may have just hidden the icon.  Go to your icon screen and press your menu button, then select show all.  This will bring up the hidden icons.  If you find it in the hidden icons, simply highlight it and select unhide.  If you can't find it after doing show all, then you will need to run the application loader to get it back on there.  To run it, you need a windows pc with the BlackBerry Desktop Manager installed AND the device software for your particular model of BlackBerry (this is obtained through your wireless carrier's BlackBerry download site)

  • I'm deleting old back ups in time machine but it's not freeing up any space

Time machine cannot back up because it is full and is not deleting old backups.
So I delete back ups myself and it doesn't fire up any space!

The problem is that the backups of the old computer are still on the volume, and Time Machine won't delete them to make room for more backups of the new one.
At the top level of the folder Backups.backupdb, there should be a subfolder with the name of each computer that has ever been backed up to that volume. Delete the one with the name of the old computer by dragging it to the Trash and emptying. I warn you, though, that sometimes the Trash will fail to empty, and then you'll probably have to erase the volume and start over. Do this only if you have at least one other complete backup of all current data (which you should have anyway.)

  • How do I delete old back ups in Time Machine?

Is there a way to selectively delete back ups on TM?

start Time machine, go to the backup you want, click on the "gear" action button in finder toolbar and select "delete backup".

  • Photos. They are on my macBook, backed up on time machine. Copied them (hours and hours) to external hard drive. They are now in alphabetical order (19,000  of them) NOT IN THEIR EVENTS or date order-and have been taken with different cameras- help!!!!!!

    Photos.
They are on my macBook, backed up on time machine. There are 19,000+ of them, some rescued from a pc crash- which I used the nifty iPhoto to put back into date order.
I want to take them all off my laptop, now............as I need to use it for WORK!!
Copied them (hours and hours) to another external hard drive.
They are now in alphabetical order (all 19,000+ of them) NOT IN THEIR EVENTS or date order. (-They have also been taken with different cameras over the years and some of the generic camera numbering remains.)
I have tried to copy them (only a few as an experiment)  one event at a time, but that again "opens up" the Event "folder" and tips them out as individuals and therefore just lists image letters and numbers alphabetically.
    How can I copy
the whole library still in  "Events" to an external hard drive?
the folders/albums I have already made on to this hard drive?
and how can I add to this back up monthly, again keeping events and folders separate and updated?
Mac is so user friendly - there must be a way.........
    Thanks

UPDATE : I have re-installed from disk, various apps that were no longer functioning such as iLife, iWork etc. So, I now can access my photos again.
Also, I had to re-install all the software for my printer ( Stylus Pro 4880 ) and reset it so the printer is working again.
Photoshop CS4 won't open. I think I will have to get in touch with Adobe as basically, I guess they have a built-in "blocker" which prevents me from opening the app as the license is for only 1 user and having re-installed the OS, there are now, in effect, 2 users ( Me and Me 1, I think ).
So, having added on a new external HD, Time Machine has made a copy of most of the files, folders, apps etc onto the external HD. The internal HD is still nearly full ( 220 GBs out of 232 GBs ).
I am guessing the way to go now in order to free up space on the internal HD is to delete/trash older photos from my iPhoto library and hope that if needed, I will be able to access them on the external HD.
Am I correct ? Please advise before I do something I will regret.
    Thanks, Sean.

  • My Lacie external hard drive will not back up on Time Machine. Says there's not enough space. This has happened with every single external I've purchased. Thought TM was supposed to delete old backups??

My Lacie External backed up on Time Machine after the first back up but now says there's not enough room. I thought TM deleted old back ups to save new versions. What am I doing wrong. This happens to me constantly. Every single external hard drive I've purchased for the MacBook Pro (5 of them) has not worked either initially or at the second back up. It either isn't formatted properly so I have to go to Genius bar to help me set up for the first back up, or after the first back up, it says there's not enough space and I have to go back to Genius Bar. Is there a way I can fix this on my own?

I just purchased 2 external hardrives. a LaCie Minimus and a G Drive. Each 1 TB. The guy at Apple told me that would provide 2 good TM backups for me. My internal HD has 750 GB capacity, of which I'm using 700 GB. Perhaps the ratio is not great enough. I do wish they would have told me this before I purchased the two Bummmmer! I even had them format and get the first back-ups going because of issues I've had in the past. I also just bought a 750 GB for photos.
So, I won't be able to buy another bigger external since I've just purchased 3. Ugh. Well, I'll just exclude some files and divide things up. Eventually, I just want my 20,000 iphotos on one of the 1TB externals, and a TM back-up on another so that iphoto will function once more. It really hates how many photos I have and is brutally punishing me for it.I seriously need to do some housecleaning!
Thanks for the advice. Just moved from US to Australia last week and was hoping to upload a few photos and the domino effect has lead me to this. Just went to Genius Bar in Perth today and they told me how to reformat drive to transfer iphoto library over, but I got stuck at trying to back-up my TM.

  • Howto restore deleted files/photos from aperture (backup =time machine)

Hi there, I'm following up on a thread I posted under 'time-machine' discussion forum (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12158758#12158758)
Problem: I incidentally deleted some photos that shouldn't have been deleted. I'm using 'time-machine' and wonder how can I restore those images?
As I recall, there is one file (as in database) for aperture that store all photos init. Is there a 'trick' to get yesterday's file and resurrect the lost photos?
    Thanks for any pointers.

    Adriana
are the files in the Aperture trash?
Do you use the vault feature of Aperture or just Time Machine?
If you only use Time Machine the files will be in there, get back to us on the first couple and if it is only Time Machine some one here can step you through how to retrieve the files.
    Tony

Do a restore from Time Machine. That will tell you.

  • Very sick Macbook Pro OS v 10.6.8 - initially running slow so I tried backing up to Time Machine and reloading the OS but the install disk failed. I was able to recover from the Time Machine back up but many applications are not working properly. Help!

I am also no longer able to back up using Time Machine (backups fail), can't access iPhoto (which was a problem before attempting to reload OS) and I suspect other apps are no longer working. The computer is however running faster in Safari and Mail...any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If there are any files you can transfer to  a regular storage drive do that first and then disconenct all drives.
Hold c boot off the 10.6.8 disk and use Disk Utility to Erase with Zero option the hard drive, takes some time, let it complete as it's mapping off any bad or failing sectors.
Then install 10.6. log in and update to 10.6.8 (important!)
Now use Migration Assistant to transfer over just your user files, we need to rescue those first out of TimeMachine's EVIL clutches, once you've got that, transfer them to the regular storage drive and disconnect.
Note: if your 10.6 disk fails, call Apple for a replacement, you need the machine specific version, the 10.6.3 retial doesn't have iLife and only works for machines pre 10.6.3 release, not afterwards. Factory installed 10.6.4 machines and afterwards need machine specific disks.
    Then either:
Log into the admin/first set up user on the machine and delete the Migrated user, then reboot and use Migration assistant again to TM everything this time
    Or
Just install all your programs again from fresh sources.
If your TM drive is really hosed, then you'll need Data Rescue $99 to read the TM files directly and transfer the results to another regular storage drive (not the first one just in case), then pick through the debris and locate your files and transfer them to another drive.
I don't like TimeMachine, but for newbies it's better than nothing.
(I prefer cloning my entire OS X parititon instead, I can access it from any computer (Linux, Mac or PC) and I also can boot my Mac from it. I use Carbon Copy Cloner, but that's for later once your all better. )

  • HT201250 Can I delete a particular program that was backed up in Time Machine from my Time Machine Back Ups?

I have a program that was backed up using Time Machine and I was wondering if I could delete the program from my Back Up history with out having to start a band new back up of every thing.

If the program is a self-contained application that was installed by dragging and dropping it into your Applications folder, then you can go to your applications folder and invoke Time Machine. Then go back in time until you see the first backup of the application, right-click it, and then choose the option to delete all backups of the item.

How do I find my photos on my external hard drive backed up using Time Machine?
My hard drive died so this is my only storage. The hard drive was from an early 2008 Macbook Pro.
I had recently installed Snow Leopard.

If they’re in an iPhoto library, look in the Pictures folder of your home folder first. Otherwise, they’ll be in the location corresponding to the one you saved them to.
