Recover entire system didn't work
I've been using Leopard for 1 week now - installations problems like everyone else but had it working great. Decided to update my Brother 240c printer driver for 10.5. When I rebooted by macbook it loaded everything fine until the Brother printer utility loaded then it froze. After several reboots I decide to use Time Machine and Recover entire system - after I used Disk Utility to repair the drive (it said disk was ok). I used TM backup from 4 days earlier. TM loaded everything then rebooted and started loading startup programs then froze.
I started a new time machine backup, after fresh the fresh install of leopard, and the new system log, from today, shows a few errors... what might these be?

Need help restoring entire system
Last night I decided to upgrade the harddrive in my iMac and then use Time Machine to restore my system. However, I ran into a bit of a snag. When I go to restore I have to select the file I want to restore from. Time Machine states that it only shows "complete backups", however I find this very inaccurate as the list showed every single backup for each hour they were created. If I selected the last backup it wouldn't copy anything, reboot and hang until it loaded the cd again. I then selected the first backup since I know it contained the entire system. That worked fine, however, obviously I had made several changes since the first backup. Most of my apps are missing as well as all file changes that were made. I can't find a way to simply restore my system to the last state it was in. If I reboot and tell it to restore the last backup it erases the drive and ofcourse there are no files for it to copy over. How do I get my system to look exactly like it did prior to changing the hard drive? There has to be a way to do this using Time Machine since they claim you can restore your system after a hard drive failure.
Just to clarify what I did. I booted using the DVD and can successfully restore my system from a Time Machine backup, however, I can only restore using the first backup Time Machine makes (where it backs up the entire system). What I can't get it to do is restore from the last backup point. So basically I can restore my system to look like it did on October 26th, but I can't restore it to look like it did yesterday. The problem with that is not only am I not able to see applications I have installed since the first backup, but all the file changes I have made are gone. If I try to reboot from DVD and restore from backup and select the last backup that was made on Nov 7th, it says it is "copying files" but within 10 seconds the system reboots and loads from the DVD again because the Nov 7th backup didn't contain anything (although the Backup process says it only shows "complete backups" I assume it shows more than that. I will try again tonight and select the last backup to see if it works properly the second time around.

Entire System Audio mutes randomly while working in Premiere
Hi everyone
Just recently switched over to Premiere Pro CS6 at my office. I'm an editor for a web video production company and so far I've been having quite a few problems with Premiere.
The biggest issue is that randomly, maybe 10 times a day, the audio for my entire system will drop out while editing in Premiere. At first I was resorting to doing full restarts of my computer and the problem would fix itself, but now I've discovered that if I go into "Activity Monitor," search for "coreaudiod" and then force restart that activity, the audio will reset itself for the system, but not Premiere. I still have to then restart premiere to get the audio working again in my project.
I've seen other people mention similar issues but I have yet to find a solution. Can anyone help? Thanks so much.

v. 6.0.2I've worked on two projects so far and it's happened both times. The first project was using ProRes source footage and then outside video assets were brought in that were H264.
Now I'm working on a project that is using Canon DSLR H.264 native footage and video assets that are in H264 and a few that are XDCAM EX.
Also using many still images but it seems as though it will happen randomly when I load a video clip into the Source window. The video clip will play with audio in the source monitor, but then when I bring it into the timeline this is when the entire system audio will drop out and mute entirely. -
I've just opened an Adobe ID and tried to download the 30 day Captivate 8 trial. The download obviously didn't work and it's now stuck going nowhere in my system, calling itself "Resume Download etc". I've looked at all the trouble shooting pages to no avail. Anyone know how I can find a real person to talk to about this?

Step 4: I did this to backup the music already on my computer, but it didn't work. Is there any way to recover it now that I have copied my new music?
A better way is to select the photos in iPhoto and export to a desk top folder, right click on it and burn to disk

I had a Tascam US 122 usb interface, but it didn't work with OSX Mavericks. What model would work with this? Would the US-144 mkii work with my system?
Thanks!You didn't mention the kind of track in GB you are trying to create, but if you are connecting the keyboard with a guitar chord to the Tascam, you will need to set up a Real Instrument Track in GB to hear anything. If your keyboard has a midi out, use a midi cable to the midi input of the Tascam, create Software Instrument Track, and you will hear something. But with a guitar chord, it won't send the right signal to a Software Instrument Track. The headphone jack in the Tascam monitors the signal coming back to it out of GB (if you choose the US-122 as your monitor in GB's preferences), so you wouldn't hear your keyboard if the track is not set up correctly. It could be the drivers, but since you didn't mention the type of keyboard or the type of GB track, I thought that might be a possible answer as well.

Not sure why this didn't work properly.
So I programmed out a clock for practice/educational value for myself, and I got it near the end and encountered a problem. My program has 2 sets of class fields and a few temporary ones. The first set of class fields are text fields (hours, mins, secs) and the second set are Integers (h, m, s) (not int's ... Integers). I have two methods (setText and setTime) that convert between these two sets. setText sets the text fields to whatever time is stored in the Integers, and setTime sets the Integer values to whatever is stored in the text fields (assuming they're valid ints, of course).
The code that was behaving strangely is shown below between the large comment lines. I needed some way to update the time, so I first tried changing the Integer values and then calling setText() ... but it didn't work. So I then tried setting the text fields and calling setTime() and that DID work. The end result of both should be the same, and yet it wasn't. I was wondering why not? Can anyone help/explain?
I figure it has something to do with Integers and mutability, but that doesn't seem likely since they're both declared at the class-level and not within a method. I did some debugging of it (added System.out.println messages) and found out that the Integer value was changing, but then it was being reset back to what it was initially. bleh - I think I'm doing a bad job of explaining it. Anyway - here's the entire code below. It works correctly currently. But I left the bit of code in that wasn't working properly - just commented out. If you uncomment those and comment the 4 lines above them, you'll hopefully see what I'm talking about.

setting the text fields? You can set their values to
anything you want. Look up MVC, which stands for
model-view-controller. The text fields should only be
used to display information from the model, which is
a Calendar. The controller is the timer which updates
the view with data from the model every second. I think you need to re-read everything that I've said up to now...
It started out the program WITHOUT a timer, where the user would type in some numbers in the text fields and the time the clock displayed would change to match what they typed in. I wanted to keep this behavior simply because I wanted to. I wasn't attempting to make an actual authentic clock. After I had the program working, then I wanted to enhance it so that it altered itself, as well as the user still being able to alter it. I suppose if I were going to program it again from scratch, I'd probably have the clock have some int's at the class level and use those to make the text fields and such. Anyway --- this program is not (and never has been) about keeping accurate time.
Creating a new object once a second isn't a big deal.
If you depend on the Timer frequency to keep time, it
will eventually drift and be inaccurate. Getting the
system time each update will prevent that. You're
updating the view based on the model, then updating
the model based on the view's values, then updating
the model. It's a much cleaner design to separate
those parts clearly. Since this is for your own
education you ought to start using good design
patterns. I know they drift apart. That's not what I was interested in. And, afaik, "good design patterns" come with experience ... which is something that takes time to build and something that I am gaining. I'm not looking for a critique of my code here - I'm looking for a simple answer of why one approach worked properly and one didn't.

Day 1. Went to Apple store because iMovie was not working. It kept shutting down. Prior to going to the store, I called Apple Support and deleted and reinstalled iMovie. Still did not work. Then I went to the Apple Store. After an hour it finally worked but when I got home, it didn't work AND my iPhoto application was missing. Tried to back up on external hard drive but it didnt work.
Day 2. Explained the situation again to Apple employee at Apple Store. I bought an external hard drive that employee recommended and picked out. I went home and backed up my computer on the external HD.
Day 3 (morning). Went back to Apple. Employee verified that my hard drive was backed up successfully. All my photos, music, and documents were successfully backed up. He was going to reinstall the operating system. He did that successfully. He showed me how to install the external HD info to the laptop. I went home and followed the directions. It was going to take about 2 hours. I kept monitoring the progress and everything looked good until....30 minutes remained. 30 minutes remained for a good 20 minutes. The ext hard drive stopped responding. I tried to canel but there were no buttons to push. I exited the program. I called apple support and they tried to walk me through it. My computer still was not recognizing that the exteranl HD was plugged in. I mad another trip to the Apple store and the emplyee confirmed that the extranal HD was not reading. He tried plugging it in to his computer and it still wasnt reading.
He did give me a data recovery number to call. I asked if Apple would cover the cost and he said no. I called then and was quoted $700-$2000 to recover the data.
Does anyone have any suggestions? When frustrates me more is that I followed every instruction and I did exactly what Apple told me to do. Now, ALL of my data is lost and Apple does not want to help.

Thanks for the response. I can say with confidence that that is not the issue. I have at least 8 of these same WD external portable drives that are powered through their USB 3.0 cables, and I have never had problems with any of them. Sometimes I connect them directly to my computer, and sometimes I use a powered hub. Either way they work fine. The drives with their own power source do not suit my needs.
My question is specifically whether anyone has seen an issue where sometimes they plug a drive in and it is not recognized but then it continues to work. In other words, the question I'm posing to other users is whether it sometimes happens that they connect a drive and it simply doesn't show up, but then they disconnect and reconnect and it goes on working fine as it should. -
Mail.app crashes entire system (etc)
Hi all,
One of our photography workstations had an issue with the hard disk recently that meant Apple support took us through reinstalling OS X Snow Leopard. We then restored the main user's profile due to the profile becoming unusable during the reinstallation.
Since then, various apps crash the entire system, Mail.app being one of them. 'Crash', in this case, means the spinning beach ball that never goes away, Finder is dead and moving the mouse over the Apple in the top left corner just shows the beach ball - 'Force Quit' is therefore inaccessible.. The Dock is also dead, meaning I can't kill Mail.app from there. At this point the only option is to hold down the power switch and restart the system completely.
So far, this is what I've tried.
- Updating all system components to the latest versions
- Updated all installed apps so they're up-to-date
- Removing Mail.app and reinstalling it from the DVD (didn't work - OS X just said the version isn't compatible and I had to restore Mail.app from a backup)
- Removed all Mail.app files and settings from ~/Library/Application Support etc, including /Library/Application Support, ~/Library/Preferences and /Library/Preferences.
- Installed Postbox.app - even that doesn't work. Starting the app kills OS X and requires the power-button restart ... this one confuses me as it's different app (it's almost like port 25 traffic is killing the OS, although I don't see how that's possible)
All that said, a new user profile *does* work. That tells me that Mail.app itself is OK and that it's a profile issue. However, I did delete all the Mail.app profile files that I could find so I'm assuming (yes, I know assumptions are bad) that the profile Mail.app created after that is actually brand new.
However, I don't want to create a whole new profile unless it's absolutely last resort - the user profile has extensive customisation for screen calibration, printer profiles etc, all done by a very expensive external company ... I'd rather not pay them to do it all again unless it's totally unavoidable.
Can anyone suggest any files that Mail.app might be using that I've missed? It seems odd that Postbox.app does the same thing as Mail.app, as does the Office 2011 updating application (i.e. all kill OS X/Finder).

I did the bolding for emphasis. When I see the words "extensive customisation" I think those become the first suspects.
Can anyone suggest any files that Mail.app might be using that I've missed? It seems odd that Postbox.app does the same thing as Mail.app, as does the Office 2011 updating application (i.e. all kill OS X/Finder).
The primary folders and files associated with Mail.app are:
~/Library/Mail
~/Library/Mail /Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
~/Library/Mail /Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.mail.XXXX-XXXX-XXXX.plist
where the X's are letters and digits.
Note that the fact that other apps are misbehaving should tell you that the problem is not with mail but more systemic.

Run Disk Utility and repair/verify your drive. This is another red flag. -
[Solved by moving to Ubuntu] VirtualBox freezes the entire system
Hello everyone,
I have some major issues with VirtualBox, I have recently installed it for the first time, but it just randomly freezes my entire system. There shouldn't be any load on the processor for this to happen. I don't really know what the cause is. I tried both Windows XP and Windows 7 as guest systems with the same sad outcome. The host and guest freeze and I have to do a hard restart. There always is some noise that comes from the sound card and, in the case of VMWare, from the case speaker.
I tried disabling AMD-V - using a Phenom II x4 955 - but it didn't work. I also tried adding nohz=off to the grub line but it also didn't work. I have recompiled the kernel modules after the last kernel update - 2.6.32. I can't really say whether it's only related to the last kernel update or not as I only started using it after the update.
It seems that I have similar issues with VMWare player.

Phenom II x4 955
4 GB of ram
Virtualbox 3.1.2-2 from the AUR
This only issue occurs with VirtualBox and VMWare, I did test the memory and it's okay. I also have plenty of fans - 2x120mm + 2x80mm - and my system temperature (using k10temp) never goes above 48 c under load. So, it isn't an issue with overheating.
Does anyone have any similar issues? Do you have any suggestions for this?

Does anyone have a machine with another 64-bit distro with this kernel version? If so, can the problem be replicated there? I don't know whether this is really related to Arch or the kernel. Should I file a bug report somewhere? and if so, where can I do it?

Restoring Your Entire System / Time Machine

Q: Can I restore my Macs’ entire system, and how is Time Machine involved?
A: Yes, you have several options, each involving increasing degrees of severity. In all cases Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard) will be required as previous OS X versions do not work with Time Machine backups. Naturally, all of these methods will require a significant amount of time, so plan accordingly.
*Archive & Install*
An Archive and Install is the least invasive of the 3 methods. This approach results in a fresh copy of the Mac OS system software while at the same time preserving all current user accounts on your Mac. Additionally, this method will permit Time Machine to continue backing up to the same set of backups it did prior to the installation.
Procedure:
Verify that your Mac has uninterrupted AC power.
Turn “OFF” Time Machine in the Preferences.
Insert your original Mac OS 10.5 Leopard DVD and reboot while holding down the “C” key.
At the “Welcome” screen click “Continue”.
At “Select a Destination” choose your Macs’ hard disk.
Click “Options” in the lower left.
Choose “Archive and Install”.
Ensure that “Preserve Users and Network Settings” is checked.
Click “OK”.
Back at the “Select a Destination” screen click “Continue”.
At “Install Summary” click “Install”.
Once the installation is complete, use Software Update to bring your Mac up to date.
Next, Launch Disk Utility, select your Macs’ internal disk on the left, and click “Repair Disk Permissions”.
During this initial period, Spotlight is going to re-index your Mac’ hard disk. This can take up to several of hours depending upon the volume of data. Allow it to complete before resuming Time Machine backups. You can monitor its’ progress by clicking on the Spotlight icon in the menu bar.
During the installation a new folder was created at the root level of your hard disk labeled “Previous Systems”. These are all the system files that were just replaced with fresh copies. If you are comfortable, you can delete this folder right away. Otherwise, wait a week or so incase there is something you wish to retrieve, then delete it.
Finally, turn Time Machine back “ON” in the Preferences. Time Machine should continue to backup to the same set of backups that it did prior to the Archive & Install. However, due to the extensive changes to the systems’ directories, the first backup will require a lengthy session of “Preparing...” as Time Machine performs a “deep traversal”. Allow this to proceed uninterrupted. Naturally, this first backup may be a significant one, perhaps involving several GB of data, so attempting this wirelessly will require time and patience.
*”Restore System From Backup...”*
If however, your system has experienced a serious malfunction, or a Mac OS software update has produced undesirable behavior, you can perform a full system restore from your Time Machine backups. This will result in a system virtually identical to the OS environment that existed on the date of the backup you choose to restore from. All system software, applications, and user accounts will be replaced with copies as they existed when that backup took place. The advantage here is that, generally, no further installation of 3rd-party software is required and all of your personal & system settings a preserved. The disadvantage is that because you retain your personal settings and system files, you run the risk of reintroducing any problems you experienced with the previous installation, including issues that necessitated the full restore in the first place.
Naturally, the time and date you choose to restore from can make a significant difference in the state of your resulting OS environment. Choosing the most recent date from which to restore is most desirable. If, however, one or more Time Machine backups occurred after you began experiencing issues with your system, then going farther back in time to restore from will be more advantageous. Files created or modified after you began experiencing system issues may later be recovered via Time Machines’ “time travel” interface (“Browse other Time Machine disk...”).
Unfortunately, restoring your system by this means will result in Time Machine abandoning previous backup sets and beginning a new set. So verify ahead of time that you have enough space on your backup drive for another full backup. Alternatively, once the full restore is complete, you can delete the old backups to free space on the drive. Or you can begin backups on a different hard disk while retaining the older backups until you are satisfied that the current set have accumulated enough history.
Procedure:
Verify that your Mac has uninterrupted AC power.
For faster installation, Time Capsule/AirDisk users should connect their Macs directly to their Airport device via ethernet.
Insert your original Mac OS 10.5 Leopard DVD and reboot while holding down the “C” key.
At the “Welcome” screen go up to the “Utilities” menu and select “Restore System From Backup…”.
The “Restore Your System” window reminds you that this procedure will erase all data on your Macs internal hard disk. Click “Continue”.
At “Select a Backup Source” choose your Time Machine backup disk and click “Continue”. (If the backup disk you are restoring from is a network drive then click “Connect to Remote Disk”. Next, choose the disk image from which the restore will be drawn from and click “Continue”.)
At “Select a Backup” choose from which set of backups you would like to “Restore From” in the drop-down menu. (If your backup drive only has one set, this will be grayed out.)
Next, highlight the date and Mac OS X version from which you would like to restore.
Click “Continue”.
At “Select a Destination” choose your Macs’ internal hard disk. Give the installer time while it calculates the space required for the restore. When ready click “Restore”.
Confirm your desire to erase the drive by clicking “Continue”.
Obviously, this will take quite some time. But when the installer finally announces it has finish, click “Restart”.
After logging in, immediately go to System Preferences --> Time Machine, and turn “OFF” backups, even if a backup attempted has begun.
Next, Launch Disk Utility, select your Macs’ internal disk on the left, and click “Repair Disk Permissions”.

Additionally, the subsequent backup may be quite substantial involving many GB of data, but don’t be alarmed.
Your system has now been restored to virtually the same state it was in on the date of the backup you chose. (See this article for a list of files that TM does not restore, http://shiftedbits.org/2007/10/31/time-machine-exclusions/)
*Erase, Install, & Migrate*
A final option, reserved for last resort, is to erase the hard disk, install a fresh copy of the Mac OS, and then use Migration Assistant during the installation to restore your user accounts. This is the Mac equivalent of ‘Slash and Burn’, and really should only be necessary if you require a completely fresh start.
Procedure:
Verify that your Mac has uninterrupted AC power.
For faster migration of user data, Time Capsule/AirDisk users should connect their Macs directly to their Airport device via ethernet.
Insert your original Mac OS 10.5 Leopard DVD and reboot while holding down the “C” key.
At the “Welcome” screen click “Continue”.
Click “Agree” to the user agreement.
Select you Macs internal hard disk and click “Options”.
Select “Erase and Install”.
Select “Mac OS Extended (Journaled)” for disk format. (Avoid selecting “Case-sensitive” unless you know what you are doing.)
Click “OK”.
Click “Continue”.
At “Install Summary” click “Customize” if you would like to eliminate certain Print Drivers, Fonts, or Language packages from being installed. Otherwise, click “Install”.
If you wish, you can click “Skip” when the DVD integrity check begins.
After the initial installation completes, your Mac will restart and you will see the video introduction.
At “Welcome” select your country and then preferred keyboard.
At “Do You Already Own a Mac?” you are asked “Would you like to transfer your information?”

Select “from a Time Machine backup” and click “Continue”.
At “Select a Backup Volume” choose your Time Machine backup disk and click “Continue”. (If you are attempting the migration wirelessly, then click “Join...” and select your network first.)
At “Transfer Your Information” check all the categories you wish to migrate over. If you wish your Mac to be in the same state as your last backup, then check everything. Give the installer time to calculate sizes.
Once that is complete, the “Transfer” button will become active and you can click it.
After the install, verify the registration information, click “Connect” and you are done.
After logging in, immediately go to System Preferences --> Time Machine, and turn “OFF” backups, even if a backup attempted has begun.
Next, Launch Disk Utility, select your Macs’ internal disk on the left, and click “Repair Disk Permissions”.
Interestingly, no Spotlight indexing appears necessary, so, once the permission repair is complete, turn Time Machine back “ON” in the Preferences. Time Machine should continue to backup to the same set of backups that it did prior to the restore. However, due to event logs being out of sync, the first backup will require a lengthy session of “Preparing...” as Time Machine performs a “deep traversal”. Allow this to proceed uninterrupted. Naturally, the first backup after a significant installation like this will be quite large so don’t be alarmed.

Did you do a full system restore, per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum)?
If so, everything should have been restored, just like they say, unless things were excluded from Time Machine (there's some very bad advice about that on the internet).
All the things you describe are in +*<home folder>/Library/Preferences.+* If you used +Migration Assistant+ instead, you may have an extra user account, that has the restored preferences.
