Recover exchange 2010 to a new server
I recently took over a position here at this company. The exchange server had 2gb left on the C drive. I had to disable windows updates and clear logs just for email to begin working again. That exchange server had since failed, but was able to recover it
by just dumping the raid array into an identical machine. However I suspect this machine will soon fail itself.
I purchased a brand new server to move exchange over to, im wondering if there is any documentation anywhere where I can do a backup, then restore exchange and mailboxes to the new machine without breaking links to our Cisco VM system, client mailbox configurations,
mobile phone setups, SSL cert, ect. Basically just to restore exchange 2010 on Server 2008 64 to a brand new machine and have it continue from there. Has anyone done this or can point in the direction of documentation for this?
What is the current status of Old Exchange Server?
What is the size of WINSXS folder?
Cheers,

Installation of Exchange 2010 in Windows 2012 Server
Hi all,
We are planning to upgrade our current Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010, Need some help on installation and Support of Exchange 2010 in Windows 2012 Server, as per the
https://technet.microsoft.com/library/ff728623(v=exchg.150).aspx Exchange 2010 with sp3 is supported in Windows 2012 but I am unable to find the installer of Ex 2010 with sp3
in web even in MSDN. There is only Ex 2010 with Sp1 available. I know that after installing ex2010 with sp1 version, I can install sp3 later but I found one link
http://www.petenetlive.com/KB/Article/0000785.htm where it is mentioned that insllation can be done only after doing the registry settings.
So is any one who has installed Ex 2010 in Windows 2012 Server and faced this issue and any solution.
Thanks
Mukesh
Mukesh BishtYou can easily install Exchange 2010 (SP3) on Windows Server 2012. If you are working with previous SP version’s you can easily upgrade after installing server. And registry settings
are used to fix an error which may occur during migration, so it is not mandatory to correct registry settings each time during migration.
You can find detailed information about installing Exchange 2010 (SP3) on Windows Server 2012 at this blog :http://oxfordsbsguy.com/2013/03/24/how-to-install-exchange-2010-sp3-on-windows-server-2012/ -
Hi there!
I have a problem which makes me very angry already :)
I have two servers Exchange 2010 SP3 with MB role started on Windows Server 2012. I decided to create a DAG.
I have created the prestaged AD object for the cluster called msc-co-exc-01c, assigned necessary permissions and disabled it. Allowed through the Windows Firewall traffic between nodes and prepared the File Share Witness server.
Then I have tried to add nodes. The first node has been added successfully, but the second node doesn't want to be added :). Now I can add only one node to the DAG. I tried to add different servers first, but only the first one was added.
LOGS on the second nodes:
Application Log
"Failed to initialize cluster with error 0x80004005." (MSExchangeIS)

"[VER] Could not read version data from database for node msc-co-exc-04v (id 1)."

UPD:
when Exchange servers ran on the same Hyper-V node, the DAG is working well, but if I move one of VM to another node, It stops working.
I have installed Wireshark and captured trafic of cluster interface. When DAG members on the same HV-node, there is inbound and outbound traffic on the cluster interface, but if I move one of DAG member to another node, in Wireshark I see only outbound traffic
on both nodes.
It's confused me, because there is normal connectivity between these DAG members through the main interface.
Please, help me if you can.Hi, Jared! Thank you for the reply.
Of course I did it already :) I have new info:

Error when recovering a database in a new server
Hi folks,
I took a full RMAN backup from a Windows Server 2003 32bit and tried to restore it in a new server (Windows Server 2003 64bit). The restore was apparently ok, but when recovering, I got this error:
archived log for thread 1 with sequence 0 is already on disk as file /u01/app/oracle/oradata/GIEVOTE2/redo01.log

I tried to recover using backup controlfile until cancel but same error. I don't need to apply any archivelog as it is a testing env.
Info:
Oracle Server: 10g R1 (10.1.0.4)
DB Type: Single Instance
Thanks in advance,You do not show your rman script, but if you are restoring to another server, you will need to do an incomplete recovery
This will require a 'set until' parameter.
eg:
run {
set until sequence xxx thread 1;
allocate channel dev1 type disk;
recover database;
sql 'alter database open resetlogs';
or
run {
set until time "to_date( '22-03-2010 10:00:00', 'DD-MM-RRRR HH24:MI:SS')";
allocate channel dev1 type disk;
recover database;
sql 'alter database open resetlogs';
If you do not use this it will keep requesting logs until it finds the end of thread marker (EOT) in a log, which occurs when the database is shutdown, and this will be a complete recovery -
Remove Exchange 2010 DC from single server environment coexisting with Exchange 2013
My new Exchange server (2013) has completed all the migration steps including public folders. Mail is working well. I do not use the old DC running Exchange 2010 for any local domain logins or computer control, it is strictly for OWA as is my new Exchange
2013. I went through the uninstall of Exchange 2010 with out error but cancelled it after it said it was ready to uninstall. When I shut down Exchange 2010 server mail no longer is available. What am I missing? I am using same Public IP and different
private (192.168.1.4 new EXchange 2013, 192.168.1.7 for Exchange 2010) I changed these settings in my asa Firewall and that is working with new settings as well. Send and Receive connectors are on new while old one have been deleted. Do my MX records
need to be updated to reflect new server (ex2) as opposed to old server name (ex)?
You can come to Maui for a "Site Inspection" lol!
System AdminHi
You need to make sure all your DNS settings are correct with the new server IP as well as autodiscover. Remove any routing connectors between exchange 2010 and 2013.
Not best practice to run exchange on a DC but if you comfortable you have migrated all system mailboxes, user mailboxes and that the settings on your new server match the old one then proceed with the uninstall.
Your ISP will obviously route mail to your firewall as you are doing the NAT from there. -
Recovering andrestoring of database in new server after current server fail
Hi,
If we have a disaster ,where the Database server has gone and we can not use it again.
1) We do not have dataguard.
2) We have rman backup file of 2 days before (Full database backup). Rman backup with nocatalogue
3) Flashback log files of 2 days back
3) Archive log till yesterday
4) Export file of morning.
Can we be able to restore and recover our database in new server
if yes then how.
Because RMAN Backup has its DBID and the new Oracle software which i install on new server will be installed with new ID.
Please help me understanding this thing (About target database)
RegardsFirst of all, you should install the software on the server only, you should NOT create a database.
As you can restore a database to a new host (and this is documented), you won't have any problems. That is, if you don't create a database during installation, and read up on recovery.
I wonder: why do all those anonymous users always can't be bothered to read the documentation, and ask others to paraphrase it for free?

Is Exchange 2010 supported on Windows Server 2012 R2?
According to the

Exchange 2010 - Create a new Mailbox Database
Hello all and thanks in advance for your time and expertise.
Here's my scenario:
In my ORG we have one exchange server. The hard drive space on this server was quite low so we added two more drives which are independent and in their own Raid Configuration from the drives that were already installed. In other words, the current
mailbox database is housed on drives with a total storage capacity of 837GB.
We recently added two more drives, each 2TB, and configured them in a RAID1.
I'm going to create a new Mailbox Database on the 2TB drives and move over some mailboxes to balance out the storage.
Question one: When we move some of the mailboxes over to the new database - will this free up space on the existing database or do we have to reclaim it such as with an offline degrag.
Question two: When I create the new mailbox database and I'm prompted to Enter the new file locations for the database (database path and log folder path) - do I just change the paths to the new drive letter path such as G:
We're eventually going to Office365 (hopefully sooner rather than later) but I just want to make sure I handle this process correctly. Your input here is greatly appreciated.Hello,
Your databse size is 650 GB. As per my experience , it would not take more than 14 hours for total mailbox movement.
You will be creating new database of 2 TB , you have already allocated 2 Tb drive to exchange server.
If you are dividing drive into 2 or four part and creating that much databse, it will be helpful for maintence activity in future.
It is recommended that you move mailbox during off bussiness hours, it will fasten the movment,as there will be no load on exchange server . You can do it on daily basis Or you can do it on weekend .
You need to take care of logs generated during movment, are you going to use seperate log drive for databse, or combine with database drive. If you are moving all mailbox to one database, It will genrate same size of logs file as of total mailboxes
size (650 GB). You neeed to handle it properly. Enable circular logging on database, after movment ,you can disable it.
Moreover, if you will create move request of all mailboxes, exchange will process nly 50 request, rest will be in queue state.
Regarding public folders, I understand there is no seperate disk for public folders, if you planning to delete old dtabse and free up disk space, you will have to move this public folders database to new disk also.
Would recommend that you take advice from other expert in this forum, before implementation. -
Exchange 2010 and Client Access Server Roll
Hi,
We have one CAS/HUB server, two mailbox roll servers in a DAG. Both mailbox roll servers have public folder database and both are replicate each other. Now we are going to office365. Now we
need to install client access roll on public folder database server(mailbox roll server) for office365 users to access the public folder from on premises according to
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn249373(v=exchg.150).aspx
We don't want get any problem after installing another CAS server roll. Our users' outlook should not interrupt with new installation. We are not setup client access array here. We are installing
this for public folders access to office365 mailboxes. How to install and configure?
Please help us to achieve this.
Thanks & Regards.http://public.wsu.edu/~brians/errors/role.html
Exchange 2013 doesn't have a public folder database. If you're asking about an older version of Exchange, the Exchange previous versions forums are here:
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/exchangeserverlegacy
You shouldn't have any problem installing the CAS role. To be sure, after installing the server change all the URLs in the virtual directories to point to one of the real CAS servers, and run Set-ClientAccessServer -AutodiscoverServiceInternalUri to
to a valid Autodiscover URL.

Issue in Synchronizing with Exchange 2010 Hub and Edge server
Dear Sir,
We have an issue with the installation of Exchange edge server 2010 SP1.
We installed exchange edge server on DMZ but unable to do the subscription between edge server and hub server. Tried to check from the edge server whether the ports (50389 & 50636) are listening. Both are listening without any issues. After the
edge subscription is done and when pass the command start -edgesynchronization we are getting the below error:
Unable to contact the edgesync service.

+Fullyqualifiederrorid : FE1A5BE2, Microsoft.Exchange.Management.Edgesync.SyncNowTask
Please help me in rosolving the issue with regards to Edge Server.
Thank & Regards
Suraj SreekumarHi Suraj,
Try to Re subscribe the HUB & EDGE serve, Create XML file on the EDGE server, Removed the Edge subscription from the HUB server and Restart the Transport & ADAM service
Then Ran Start & Test-EdgeSynchronization cmdlet on the Exchange Management Shell on Hub, again Restart the Transport server on the HUB & ADAM service on the EDGE .

Outlook 2010 - Exchange 2010 AutoConfig on New Profiles
Hi All,
Hoping someone could shed some light on an issue not come across before?
Action:
Start, Control Panel, Mail, Show Profiles, Add, type in profile name 'test' press ok.
At this point I would expect the Wizard to pop up confirming the AutoConfig details from AD against exchange details.
IE Server Username, Email address etc.
This should then give me the option to manually configure the settings, so if I wanted to I could add a different Email account, not the one associated to my AD credentials.
The problem I have is that no Wizard pops up, all that happens is the box disappears and profile auto configures itself with details from Exchange.
I am unable to remove this email account error message " The primary account cannot be removed unless it is the only account in the profile. You Must remove all other Exchange accounts
before removing the primary account."
There is no other profile in here, it is almost like Outlook is being forced to state it cannot delete this profile.
Please can someone explain what is causing this and where Outlook is getting the settings to Auto configure the profile.
It does not matter how many profiles I create they all do the same, no Wizard and automatically populate the same details from Exchange.
This occurring for some profiles but not all.It is fairly common that in managed environments administrators have set Group Policies to force the AutoConfiguration of Outlook without any user input. Contact the administrator(s) responsible for the Group Policies or client deployment for you company
to find out if anything like that has been configured.

MS Exchange 2010 - subfolders and new mail
I am a new iPhone user. So I am sorry if this is a sill question.
I am syncing to my Exchange account. All working fine. However I have rules on my Outlook which move mails into various folders. On my iPhone when a new mail is received, I get an alert, but if it has been moved into a folder, then I cannot see it unless I scroll down and look through the folders. Is there any way of overcoming this?anyone?

After recover of Exchange 2010 hub; Outlook not connecting
Exchange 2010 sp 3, Windows Server 2008 R2 sp1
one of my hub (1 of 2) server failed this morning (no thanks to KB2993651) so in a fit of hurry, i reformatted the server,
deleted the computer account from AD and reinstalled Windows Server 2008 R2 sp1. here is what i did to recover:
from the command line of the server: netsh int tcp set global chimney=disabled; netsh int tcp set global rss=disabled
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip6\Parameters -> DWORD-32 (DisabledComponents) with a value of 0xffffffff
made the server a member of "Exchange Install Domain Servers", "Exchange Trusted Subsystem", "Exchange Servers"
and then i issued the command: setup /m:recoverServer
it went fine well. i also joined it back to Windows NLB cluster.
but when it's online, some Outlook users aren't able to connect. OWA also fails. i can't figure out what's wrong so for now i shutdown the server and am using only one Hub server.
maybe i missed a step? appreciate any help.
EDIT: in the same hub server was my DAG witness folder. i don't know if this has implications now that i lost the DAG witness server (this hub server)Did you try starting the server after connecting to network ?
You could try starting the server after connecting to network and import the certificate and configure the same URLs as per my first post. You cannot open EMS and EMC if you start without network connection.
Use this URL to get the command to request new certificate. After running this command in EMS you will see a new request https://www.digicert.com/easy-csr/exchange2010.htm
For installing certificate please check thishttps://www.digicert.com/ssl-certificate-installation-microsoft-exchange-2010.htm.
Thanks, MAS

Exchange 2003 /2010 Co-existence plus 2010 migration to new hardware
Hi,
Here is our current scenario;
Exchange 2003/2010 co-existence. This has been running perfectly for a couple of months now.
Exchange 2003 - exch1.domain.lan
Exchange 2010 (SP3) - exch2.domain.lan (local domain name) / mail.domain.com.au (external domain name)
ActiveSync, autodiscover, legacy etc are all working. Our UAC certificate from GoDaddy has all the required names for exch2 - except it doesn't have the local domain name as they don't allow certificates with that anymore. I've configured all the required
services to be the external domain name and am running split DNS.
The first Exchange 2010 server I installed was lower spec'd and only has about 25 users on it. I now need to install a second Exchange 2010 server (exch3.domain.local), which is properly spec'd and will host the entire company. I won't be running DAG as
I need to repurpose the first Exchange 2010 server once it's removed.
My high level questions are;
1) Should I migrate everyone off Exchange 2003 onto Exchange 2010, decommission the 2003 server, and then install the second 2010 server? OR
2) Should I install the second Exchange 2010 server, migrate everyone from the first Exchange 2010 server, decommission that one, then do the migration from 2003 to 2010?
OR does it matter which way I do it?
I've read what I can find about installing the second Exchange 2010 server into the organisation. It seems to be pretty simple at first. Just install Exchange 2010 with HT, mailbox and CAS roles which will automatically configure it into the same Exchange
organisation.
1) Do I configure CAS to be externally facing right from the get go or do I do that later?
2) As soon as I install the second Exchange 2010 server, will I encounter any mail flow problems? Will mail be trying to flow out of the second Exchange 2010 server as well as the first?
In regards to SSL, so obviously the second Exchange 2010 server will have a different local domain name than the first, but ultimately, I want it to have the same external domain name, eg mail.domain.com.au. As my certificate doesn't contain any local domain
names, can I export the certificate from exch1 and import it into exch2, or should I just generate a new CSR from exch2 and get GoDaddy to reissue it?
OR should I look at creating a CAS Array from exch1 and adding exch2 to it. (I don't fully understand the workings of this at the moment).
Any guidance on the above is helpful.
Thanks.
SteveHi Steve I will try my best to answer each of these
My high level questions are;
1) Should I migrate everyone off Exchange 2003 onto Exchange 2010, decommission the 2003 server, and then install the second 2010 server? OR
2) Should I install the second Exchange 2010 server, migrate everyone from the first Exchange 2010 server, decommission that one, then do the migration from 2003 to 2010?
OR does it matter which way I do it?
doesn't matter at all. Since you want to move to a new hardware you can setup a new Server CASH/HUB/Mailbox. Once installed start migrating the mailboxes from Exchange 2003 to this mailbox server. This way you will not have to redo the migration from 2010
to new 2010 sever -- like you mentioned in 1) it will save you a lot of time and repeating procedure.
I've read what I can find about installing the second Exchange 2010 server into the organisation. It seems to be pretty simple at first. Just install Exchange 2010 with HT, mailbox and CAS roles which will automatically configure it into the same Exchange organisation.
1) Do I configure CAS to be externally facing right from the get go or do I do that later?
Keep your existing 2010 internet facing for now. Once you finished migrating the mailboxes then you will need to do it.
2) As soon as I install the second Exchange 2010 server, will I encounter any mail flow problems? Will mail be trying to flow out of the second Exchange 2010 server as well as the first?
Mail will not flow to 2ndry server unless you add that server as a source serve in the transport.
You can always export the certificate and then import it to the newly installed Exchange 2010.
OR should I look at creating a CAS Array from exch1 and adding exch2 to it. (I don't fully understand the workings of this at the moment).
You will only need to setup the CAS array if you are going to use both the server which can be done later.
Hope that help
Where Technology Meets Talent -
Hi,
I am currently writing a powershell script that utilizes the new-mailbox command of EMS to create a shared mailbox.
I am connecting to EMS via a remote PSSession object.
When I try and specify an alternative SMTP address via the -PrimarySmtpAddress paramater I get the error
" A positional parameter cannot be found that accepts argument '-PrimarySmtpAddress'.
I have confirmed that the version of Exchange 2010 installed on the server should have this parameter - Version 14.3 (Build 123.4)
An example command :-
New-Mailbox -Shared -Name "SharedMailbox_test" -Alias "testsharedmailbox" -DisplayName "SharedMailbox_test" -UserPrincipalName "[email protected]" -OrganizationalUnit "OU=Mailboxes,OU=Accounts,DC=domain,DC=com"
-Database "DB1" -PrimarySmtpAddress "[email protected]" -force
Has anyone else experienced this behavior?
Steve.
Just a good old boy, never meaning no harmHi Rich,
That was my initial thought too, so I triple-checked my command to see if it was a simple syntax error - it wasn't.
On further investigation I compared the list of parameters available in a DEV EMS session (on where I know the command works) against the one in PROD where the problem occurs. Both sessions are running the same version of EMS.
I ran the following to get a list of parameter names in both sessions :-
$a = gcm New-Mailbox
$a.Parameters.Keys | sort
