Recover Flash Drive Files

Is there anyone that possibly knows if there is a way to recover files from a flash drive? I accidently pulled my flash drive when it was initializing and at first the flash drive wasn't recognized and I'm not sure what I did, but now my mac recognizes it. But now there's are only a few files that show up, the important ones were deleted. Can someone please help me!?

Basics of File Recovery
Files in Trash
If you simply put files in the Trash you can restore them by opening the Trash (left-click on the Trash icon) and drag the files from the Trash to your Desktop or other desired location. OS X also provides a short-cut to undo the last item moved to the Trash -press COMMAND-Z.
If you empty the Trash the files are gone. If a program does an immediate delete rather than moving files to the Trash, then the files are gone. Recovery is possible but you must not allow any additional writes to the hard drive - shut it down. When files are deleted only the directory entries, not the files themselves, is modified. The space occupied by the files has been returned to the system as available for storage, but the files are still on the drive. Writing to the drive will then eventually overwrite the space once occupied by the deleted files in which case the files are lost permanently. Also if you save a file over an existing file of the same name, then the old file is overwritten and cannot be recovered.
General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten with recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

I have no idea what "yodot" is (let me Google it...). OK, looks as if it's a file recovery utility for Windows. Not sure why you'd need that...

  • How to reveal USB flash drive files?

    Running on Maverics 10.9.3
I saved my AutoCAD files onto my USB drive a few days ago. Today, I opened my USB again and all of my files are missing. I know they're not deleted because there is used space in the USB drive.
It is a 4gb flash drive and I'm using over 5 mb of it. They're small files, no more then 200 kb each.
ALSO. I downloaded a recovery app online and it SHOWED the missing files in my flash drive...unfortunately it said i had to upgrade/ purchase the full version in order to recover it.
It has my homework in it so I need help.

IT WORKED. Thank you, my homework is found!
I did "Is " ENTER, then dragged the thumb drive to terminal and then it did that poof effect and the usb drive no longer showed in the Devices tab in Finder. I searched the name of my usb drive, found the drive, and the files were there!!
I can see my files, now there's a different situation. I have to search the flash drive name in order to open it. It no longer shows in the Devices area in Finder. How can I show it again?

  • Is my Recovery Flash Drive going to be corrupted, too?

Hi.  A nasty computer virus recently infected my HP Pavillion g7-1338dx which operates Windows 7 Premium Home Edition. This happened when my free trial anti-virus software expired without any countdown or warning leaving me unprotected while online and I immediately got infected.
I thought I had conquered it but it seems to have corrupted my OS.  I cannot open Windows Security Center, use the firewall, update my drivers, and I am even denied access to my local drive.
I would like to use recovery to revert back to an out-of-box state.  I am a bit of a computer novice (but learning quickly due to this problem) and I wish I had created disks the day I bought the computer.  Out of ignorance, I did not.
I created a recovery image on a USB flash drive this evening.  My intention was to file that away in case of future emergencies.  After creating the image on the flash drive, I attempted to use F11 to perform recovery by accessing the partioned part of the hard drive. The result was a blue screen telling me that my attempt failed because the files were either absent or corrupt.
So, this leads me to my question. If I cannot use F11 to perform this task because the files are corrupt, what about this flash drive I just created?   Will it also contain corrupt files? Is my only option ordering disks from HP at this point?  Would scanning the flash drive with my Kaspersky do any good?
Sorry for the long post.  Any insight would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

    Hi,
There's no way of knowing for sure if the recovery files on the flash drive are Ok or not, although as the recovery partition ( from which the flash drive files are created ) is corrupt, I would tend to assume the flash drive may well be affected.  If this is the case, scanning the flash drive may well remove Malware, but it's still more than likely that the recovery process will fail if the files on the flash drive have been altered or corrupted in any way.
There are Two main options I'd suggest.
The first, as you mention yourself, would be to order a replacement set of Recovery Discs from HP.
    The second is as follows.
Before trying the following, make sure you can still read the Activation key on your Windows COA label ( 5 blocks of 5 alpha/numeric sets ).
You can create an installation disc yourself using another PC - just download the correct Disc Image ( this must be the exact same version that originally came with your notebook ) from the link below and use an application such as ImgBurn to burn the ISO correctly to a blank DVD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here.  These Images are clean and from a well-respected source, however there are only limited versions available.
    Windows-7 sp1-iso-official-32-bit-and-64-bit
Use the disc to perform the installation, enter the Windows activation key found on the COA Label when requested and when the installation has completed, use the 'Phone Method' detailed in the link below to activate the OS - this method supported by Microsoft and is popular with people who just want a clean installation of Windows 7 without the additional software load normally bundled with OEM installations.

  • How can I recover files from flash drive?

I've apparently lost a bunch of '.pages' files on a 16GB Lexar flash drive that were present yesterday.  The '.pages' files were contained in a sub-folder.  The main folder is still there and apparently okay.  I am at a total lose as to where the files (and their sub-folder) have gone to.  Any suggestions on a program or procedure to try to see if they're still there and recoverable?  Any guidance will be GREATLY appreciated!  Thanks!
    I have a MAC Mini (Mid 2010), Mac OS X (10.6.8), 2.4 GHz Intel Core2Duo 8GB mem.
If I've selected the wrong community to post this question to, please help me find the right one.  Thanks, again!

    Peter,
Thanks for suggesting Disk Utility.  I didn't know it existed, but found it and ran it.  I checked 'Verify Disk' and it "Found 335234 orphaned clusters, 25174 files, 6428792 KiB free (803599 clusters)"  And, then responded (in Red) "Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Click Repair Disk."
After I checked "Repair Disk" it responded: "Volume repair complete. Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required."
After then checking the flash drive the 'lost' folder and files are still not present.
I've been looking on the WEB for 'recovery programs' for MAC.  I'd just as soon find a 'free' application, but would consider purchasing a program if it would work.  What do you know about these 'recovery programs':
        http://www.wondershare.net/ad/data-recovery-mac.html?gclid=CKuo48CPn8ICFY_m7Aodx jYABQ
        http://help.cleverfiles.com/usb-flash-drive-recovery/

        http://www.easeus.com/mac/mac-data-recovery-resource/recover-mac-usb-drive.htm
Have you had any experience using any of them?  There are many more out there including ones that will 'scan' your flash drive ('free') and tell you what files it can recover, then you have to purchase the full program (~$99) to actually recover them.  Two of these programs are listed below:
        http://www.macintosh-data-recovery.com/?gclid=CPzujPKOn8ICFQNk7AodqFoAVw
        http://www3.softcity.com/mac-data-recovery/?tracking=SC_EN_PP_GO_SE_MDR&keyword= recover%20lost%20files%20on%20mac&gclid=CN7ArqaPn8ICFe_m7AodtFUAHg
I had even converted 7 of the original '.pages' files to '.pdf' files to eMail some friends in the universal '.pdf' format on Nov. 28th.  The '.pdf' files were saved back to the original folder on the flash drive.  They, also, cannot be found anywhere!!??
I can re-build the files (~150-200 photo pages from vacation trip back in May), but there were many comments and some special research (maps, etc.) I had included that I would probably not be able to duplicate exactly.  Luckily the '.jpg' photos from our trip are still present on the flash drive and also on the camera's memory stick - THANK GOODNESS!  However, now I am hoping that one of the recovery programs listed above might solve my problem.
Again, thanks for your help, but I'm not THERE yet!

  • Lost video file from a flash drive using iMac

I played a video file that was saved on a flash drive on my iMac. After the video played, it was automatically deleted from the flash drive. I did not physically delete the file. When I closed the file, it simply vanished. Is there anyway to recover the file?

Thanks for your response. I didn't notice the file in the trash after this occurred. If it was there, it is long gone by now anyway since I've emptied the trash several times since the incident (unless someone has an answer for recovering files that have been deleted from trash?). If it happens again, I'll pay closer attention to what is in the trash and see if this works. Thanks again.

  • Error message when I try to copy new files (images, documents) to mac from flash drive/SD card

I am recieving an error message when I try to copy new files (images, documents) to mac from flash drive/SD card. The message is saying "operation cannot be completed because an item already exists with that name." They are brand new therefore not the same name? I cannot even put them in a brand new folder...  How can I fix this?
    Please help me!

You don't need to recover the system.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press the space bar:
    dot_clean -m
Switch to the Finder and drag the icon of the flash drive into the Terminal window. Some text will appear after what you entered. Press return.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear. Then quit Terminal and try the copy again.

  • Can I recover data from a flash drive that is no longer readable?

A flash drive that I left plugged into my MacBook Pro is no longer readable. Are there ways to recover the files that were (are?) stored there?

I see that the suggested programs are $80 to $100. Are there any cheaper alternatives or should I just throw this thumb drive away (all the data on it is backed up elsewhere)?
Is this normal for a thumb drive to fail?

  • File transfer via flash drive locks MacBook

Switched from a PC laptop recently to a MacBook. After the usual growing pains, still have a problem occasionally in transferring large files (folders of IT documentation and some are 300-500MB) via my Cruzer 1GB flash drive. Some transfer fine, while others lock up the machine before the transfer is complete. After recovering, can transfer the file again and it may work OK. Any ideas would be appreciated.
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2GB RAM

My friend, I believe you're right on. I may be speaking too soon but I tried my Verbatim flash drive and transferred three rather large files with no problems whatsoever. Hopefully the problem is solved. I was glad to see someone else was having the same problem. I was about to dump this MacBook. The transferring of files is important to my work and I haven't got time to fool with the problem. Thanks again.

  • Back up I-Tunes files to a flash drive

I currently have my I-Tunes Library(3.67 GB)on an old Compac Presario and it will take 6 700mb discs to back it up, to be able to load it onto my new Acer laptop. How can I get I-Tunes to backup the Library to a 4 GB flash drive?

First of all consolidate your library. When you consolidate, any songs in the iTunes Library that are not in the iTunes Music Folder are copied to the Music Folder and the Library is updated to point to those new files. Files already in the iTunes Music Folder have no changes made to them before you transfer iTunes: Copying all your iTunes files to one location - Windows
Attach your USB drive and copy over your iTunes folder. Copying the whole folder brings with it the iTunes Music folder and also the iTunes Library (iTunes Library.itl in Windows) database file which holds all the information about your songs (Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played, Date Added, etc). You'll get more information including the Folder/File structure in this article: What are the iTunes library files?
When you copy the iTunes folder make sure you put it into the same location on the new computer. This has to be the exact same place, on a Mac this would be in Username/Music/. When you open iTunes on the new computer it will be the same as on the original one Songs, Playlists, Play Counts, Ratings etc. You should also use the same version of iTunes on both computers.
When you copy the iTunes folder make sure you put it into the same location on the new computer. This has to be the exact same place, on a PC this is \Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\. Everything has to be exactly the same on the new computer including the Windows user account name. When you open iTunes on the new computer it will be the same as on the original one Songs, Playlists, Play Counts, Ratings etc. You should also use the same version of iTunes on both computers.
If you have any iTunes purchases in your library don't forget that you'll need to authorise your new computer to play them. Also if you are disposing of the old one remember to deauthorise it so you don't use up one of your allowances: About iTunes Music Store Authorisation and Deauthorisation

  • Why can't my new Macbook Pro not see individual MTS files on the sony cx700 flash drive? How do I get AVCHD MTS files off the camera not using imovie or FCP?

    Hi,
I bought a new MacBook Pro (OS X version 10.8) recently to replace an older version. I work with different Sony cameras (Hard drive and flash drive storage), but when I connect the cameras (Sony Cx560, 700 and XR520) to the Mac it only shows an AVCHD icon. Usually you can see the individual files. We have 3 Macbook Pro's here and on 2 of them it works. Is there a setting or a driver I need to download for this new Mac? The other ones read it without intsalling anything.
    Thanks for any tips.

There are two (and probably more than two) third party apps that will do this.
    1) ClipWrap
    2) Voltaic

  • How can I access files from a flash drive that were previously saved using a Windows computer? When I attempt to open the file on MacBook Pro, it is asking to "convert file to"; I also have Microsoft Word installed on the Mac as well.

How can I access files from a flash drive that were previously saved using a Windows computer? When I attempt to open the file on MacBook Pro, it is asking to "convert file to"; none of the options I choose work. I also have Microsoft Office (with Word) installed on the Mac as well.

Format the external drive as FAT32 or ExFAT. Both computers will then be able to read and write to it.

  • I download confidential info & save to a secured flash drive; how can I delete the file from "downloads" after that?

I am a mental health professional. My supervisor emails me confidential information as Word documents, which I download using Firefox. When the download is complete, I open the document and save it to my secured flash drive. I would like to then delete the file from my computer, so the flash drive has the only copy, to protect my clients' privacy. The only directions I can find are for deleting the entry from the downloads list, but not the file itself.

There is technology known as RMS which you could set series of policies like only members in the company could access certain documents and if someone copy them and attempt to run them in another PC or outside company, it won't work. Take a look at:
