Recover iMovie project after crash?

After working on a video project for 20 hours and inserting over 50 slides into the video with custom Ken Burns' effects, iMovie unexpectedly crashed on me.  I was under the impression that iMovie '11 (9.0.4) backed up my work automatically much like Pages now does, so I didn't bother saving as I went (duhh!).  I only needed to insert the opening title for it to be complete.  I plugged in an external USB hard drive to check a file, and iMovie unexpecedly crashed.  The project reverted back to the last time I saved it a couple of days ago.  After recovering from the intial shock, I'm guessing that I've just learned a very hard lesson about saving and backing-up, but thought I'd throw this one out to the iMovie community to see if there's anything else I can check to possibly recover the project before I dig real deep and start all over agan.  Any ideas, or am I just out-of-luck?  -Bob-

Recover and open are different things.. are you trying to recover a project .. saved in TM backup.. then you need to restore the file.. you cannot open it from inside a TM backup.

  • Unviewable iMovie projects after moving them to external hard drive

I moved my imovie 09 projects to an external hard drive using the finder window, did not move them in imovie and now they are unviewable in imovie. Is there any way will be able to view them again in imovie??? I thought maybe they needed to be in the internal hard drive for some reason, so I tried to move them back to "Movies" in my internal HD, but it didn't work either. I read in some other forums that they would not have their path links copied over if I did the moving in finder. Please tell me there's a way to recover my projects!

Well, you have a couple options. First shut down iTunes. Then unmount your HD. Then mount your external HD again, then after it pops up on your desktop, launch iTunes. Any files iTunes has that points to your ext. HD should play just fine.
Or, you can copy all your music to your ext. HD (if you don't already have it there), and simply delete your iTunes library (by removing your data files). You could then add to library, making sure you uncheck "copy itunes songs to music folder). This way, iTunes will only "point" to your ext. drive to play the music. If the drive isn't on, you don't get any music, and the "!" sign. If you have many playlists, this can be tricky.
As a rule, I don't go crazy with playlists, other than smart playlists. This way, you don't go nuts when you lose your data file, or want to do a clean update of your library. You'd be surprised at the times I thought I kept my library in tip-top shape, only to delete it and add the music again. I often find a song or two that I had hidden somewhere.

  • I need help asap. Does anyone know how to recover iMovie project that just disappeared?

I went to hit play on my iMovie project, which is finished and had been playing great. this time I hit play and the screen goes black and now it appears the project is gone. The title is still under the folders section, but no clips in there. I've looked in the Trash folder on the desktop and it's not in there. I can't locate it anywhere. I spent over 100 hours on this and am devastated, as it's for work. Does anyone have a suggestion of how to recover this project? I did save as a .mov file on my external HD, which I have re-imported - however...now it's a different looking project. I can't edit it, nor can I share it in any format under the iMovie>Share tab. Help -- someone has to have some ideas...

  • How can I restore an iMovie project after a force quit?

I have been working on an iMovie project for a few months now and today as I was uploading a new video to it, iMovie locked up. I had no choice but to force quit the application. I had not previously saved my project because it had always opened back up even after closing iMovie and even shutting down my Mac. Once I force quit iMovie and reopened it, my project was gone. It is still under the iMovie project folder but when I click "open with iMovie" it won't open. Is there any way to restore my project even if it takes it back to a previous time I had worked on it? I also have not used time machine so it was not running during this time. I would be devastated to have to restart my project.

I forgot to put in the previous post that it is iMovie '11. Any help is appreciated.

  • Can't access my Imovie project after I dragged it to Desktop

I dragged my IMovie project to my desktop and now I can't get it to come up again when I doubleclick.  When I click on it and Get Info, it says it is there and is 47 MB big.  Help! This is our Amazing Race application video that I have been working on off and on for a year.  And it's due next week!  Thank you.

Drag it back from the Desktop to the Movies/iMovie Projects Folder.
    Then quit and restart iMovie.

  • How do i play my imovie project after sharing to media browser

I created an imovie project and clicked the share menu then clicked media browser.  I do not have iDVD because it didn't come with my mac. The movie is no longer under my project library and it is only under the movies folder, but it won't play at all.

You need to get a Mac. Then you need your RCPROJECT file as well as any Events or Photos that were referenced in the Movie. The RCPROJECT file is a hexadecimal file that contains the paths to the Event video clips with In and Out points, Titles, transitions, paths to music, paths to photos, etc. If you want to play it on a PC, you need to use the SHARE menu in iMovie. Share it as an h.264 file or as an MP4.
To play on a PC, get QuickTime for Windows (which is free) and play it there as is.

  • IMovie 11 gray clips - won't import to new project after crash

    Hi all,
I was importing a load of video, recorded on a Zoom Q3HD (in .MOV format) to iMovie 11. At some point, iMovie crashed and forced me to restart the app. Since then, the clips I'm trying to import are showing up as gray in the clip window. Sometime, scanning over the clips will show thumbnails from a different clip however right now, it is showing me thumbnails of the movies I'm scanning over. I have trashed iMovie thumbnails and cache, done a permissions repair, restarted, checked for updates, even resaved the problem clips in QuickTime, thinking that the format of the clips could be an issue but it made no difference. Not sure what else I can do?? I am unable to drag these gray clips into a new project. Here is a screencast of my issue. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. Thx. Matthew

What you are seeing may not be a symptom of the clips going bad but instead a symptom of something failing in the Project itself. Especially after a crash with iMovie open, everything is to be suspect. Be very paranoid about all the elements in that project, any one of them could be the source of the problem you are witnessing.
Check out this Discussion Thread from September
I movie quits unexpectedly during editing and publishing
Click on the button near the top of the window where it says Project Library (it toggles between Library and edit Project).
Click just once on the name of the project, so that it highlights in blue.
Go to File Menu > Duplicate Project. There will now be a second project with the same name, but with a number added to the end of the name
Open that duplicated project by double-clicking it
from Jasonryan1. It relates to a corrupted item existing in his project. And in his attempt to troubleshoot it, he suspected it was a Title he placed in the Project itself. Once he deleted the corrupted Title he was able to successfully export it. As to which item is causing instability, that's a tricky process to narrow down. And I would agree it seems unlikely all your projects could have some corrupted element in them. But it might work to concentrate on the simplest project which is showing the symptoms you describe. Duplicate that project and start deleting pieces of it and trying to add a Title to it and see if iMovie crashes. And that's not to say it's a title, it could just as easily be a picture, a transtion or a music clip that's preventing that project from previewing and importing clips properly.
Also consider the iMovie Preferences file.
    Delete the iMovie Preferences file:
    Go to the Desktop
Click on Go Menu then Choose Library
    Go to Preferences > com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
Drag that file to the trash, restart iMovie and see how it reacts

  • How can I Recover an iMovie project after the program shuts down unexpectedly?

I was working on an iMovie when the program shut down unexpectedly.  I had worked on this project many times before and it always showed up in my project library.  After the shutdown, however, I tried to open up the project and it is no longer in the project library.  I can find it in the finder but when I click on it, it will open iMovie but the project is not listed.  It has to be in there somewhere!  How can I recover it?  Please hlep!

There are numerous reports here on the forum about this issue (I've been bitten by it too). It's becoming an epidemic.
    Here's one thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/21157327#21157327
The recent update to iMovie '11 (to version 9.0.9) may have fixed this, but it's impracticable to test, given the random nature of the problem.
The best solution is to always have Time Machine running when editing in iMovie. Also, with larger projects, it's a good idea to duplicate the project from time to time. To duplicate, while in Project Library view (where all your projects are listed), select File > Duplicate Project. Project files are relatively small, as they mainly reference the associated Event (or Events), as well as keeping track of your edits, titles, transitions, music and so forth.

  • Recover render queue after crash.

I had queued up a series of exports which were busy being rendered in the background when the application crashed.
Upon the reopen the render queue is empty. These exports were being made on the fly and after each was added to the render queue I was clearing the timeline and starting from scratch. I assume FCPX must be saving these exports jobs to a file somewhere as it is able to continue processing the exports even when a completely diffferent project is loaded. So how can I revive them?

I always render with the BG Renderer script.  It will tell you how long each frame takes to render in the terminal.  It will also give you overall time at the end.  It automatically creates a text log of all of this info in your project folder, so you can refer to it at a later time and compare renders.  It costs money, but it's well worth it.

  • Photos not showing up in iMovie project after transferring project to external hard drive

I just finished moving my iMovie '11 projects and events to an external hard drive.  In one particular project (the only one I've used photos in), the photos will not play back when I watch it in the preview window.  The picture shows up in the project editing window, but during playback the computer seems to use the last frame of the last played video.  All of the previous settings are the same, it will just not show the pictures.  I've tried re-inserting them, even trying different pictures that were not used originally, but nothing seems to work.  I've also tried closing iMovie and restarting it, but no luck.

    Hi all
I am having the same problem - all a bit wierd.  Yesterday I could drag and drop images from finder into my project.  Today, I can drag andf drop the images from finder and they display in the project - but not when it is played.
I tried importing the images into iphoto and dragging them from the media selection window - still no joy - I can see them in the proejct - but they just don't show when played.
Is it because the project has been marked as finished in some way - although I haven't finalised it?
    Any help appreciated.
    Thanks

  • MacBook Pro OSX 10.9.1 How to recover hidden files after crash?

After a crash of the HDD, the MBP needs to be reformatted. I've managed to transfer all the files to another mac (using 'T' while booting the MacBook Pro). Because I want to keep al my e-mails, I need to reach the hidden library. But in the transferred files, I can't find this hidden library. How can I get it to show up, so I can copy the Thunderbird file which contains all of the e-mails?
    Please, I'm desperate!

    Hi,
At least i'd like to try to reinstall OSX to the same HDD. It seems to be a software problem that occured after a check-up with DiscHelp (idk the specific term in english because I use the dutch version). While 'repairing' an error, a notification came up that said that it couldn't be repaired and that I had to back-up all of my files and reformat the HDD. Since then, if i try to boot up the system, the screen goes black in about 30 seconds.
The only backup I have is the direct copy I made booting up the MBP while pressing 'T' (while connected to another mac using a thunderbolt cable). So now I have a copy of the whole HDD. I tried to find the hidden ~library but i couldn't find it. In this library there are certain files i need to transfer the profile of my email. So yeah it's still readable, but as an external HDD, unfortunately not as a computer.
I really hope you can help me!

  • Recovering Audio File After Crash

I was using Soundtrack to record a microphone via my Presonus Firepod interface for a multi-day film shoot. All was going well until on the fourth day the program decided to lock up with I tried to stop the recording. The rainbow wheel spun forever and finally the program crashed. I reopened the session file and it showed that nothing was recorded.
However, when I look in the directory where the recorded audio files are saved, it shows a 300 mb .aiff file. When I play this file all I hear is white noise.
I've done some research and what I discovered is that it seems I need to add the proper header information to the file so it can be deciphered by an audio program.
I've been fooling around with a program called SoundHack trying to add the proper header information. Occasionally I can start to hear the recorded audio, but it's still covered with some static or has a really high pitch.
Any ideas how to recover the file? It's so frustrating because it seems like the data is there, it just can't be read properly!
    Thanks in advance!

You can't trun it off, but you can empty the reovery folder if you have a corrupt doc that keeps crashing on restart. The recovery folder, by default and unless you changed it, will be in the same location as the InDesign Defaults file and those paths are listed in the thread about trashing your prefs: Replace Your Preferences

  • How do I recover these files after crash?

About a year ago I had a major HDD failure.  An expert tried to recover many of the damaged files & I have a file full on photos, videos & music.  If I do a major search most won't open in windows.
Is there any way to recover these files?
None would have had DRM on them?
Even thought the files display title of files has name of song, artist etc. & says they are MP3.  They were indeed MP3 file.
If I click on them with the medioinfo utility it says that they are AC3 file.  I know that they could not be AC3 because I only encounter this extension when I render out my Blu-rays?
Any Ideas as to how to recover this music?
    Thanks in advance

Often when people run out of room they follow advice that moves the media folder out to another drive but leaves the library files on the internal disk. If you followed this process then your media has been preserved but the library files containing your playlists, ratings, play counts etc. will have been lost. If you can find a backup copy of the library file then it should work as long as the drive with the media is given the same drive letter that it had previously.
iTunes gives each library a unique identity. When you connect a device that has been synced with one library to a different one iTunes will see they are different and propose to wipe the device and load it with the content of this "new" library. See this post for a suggested approach.

  • What happens to an imovie project after finalizing it?

Will I be able to edit it later if necessary?
    Thanks

Finalizing just prepares (renders) your project for Sharing (exporting).
You can still continue to edit it, you'll just need to Finalze it again.
