Recover links from left quick launch navigation (Sharepoint online)

For some reason my links on QuickLaunchNavigationManager section have been deleted , i´ve tried to recover masterpage file from previous versions with no luck.
Where is this content stored? Any ideas of how to recover these links?

Unless you have custom links manually added to your master page, then the links are part of the configuration of the site.
Do see any links in Site Settings, QuickLaunch or Site Settings, Navigation (if the Publishing features are enabled)?

  • Subitems on mysite quick launch navigation

    Dears,
    I was trying to modify the existing quick launch navigation of the mysite (located http://sp2013:8080/sites/mysite/person.aspx) through the navigation settings.
    Eventhough i have added the subitems as above, the quick launch navigation on mysite didn't reflect the change as i expcted. the mysite looks as below as usual:
    What i am expecting is the quick launch navigation to be look like below:
    About Me
    Link1
    Link2
    Link3
    Sublink1
    Sublink2
    I tried changing the StaticDisplayLevels and MaximumDynamicDisplayLevels attributes on the SharePoint:AspMenu and it didnt give me the expected result.
    <SharePoint:AspMenu id="V4QuickLaunchMenu" runat="server" EnableViewState="false" DataSourceId="QuickLaunchSiteMap" UseSimpleRendering="true" Orientation="Vertical" StaticDisplayLevels="2" AdjustForShowStartingNode="true" MaximumDynamicDisplayLevels="2" SkipLinkText="" />
    please advise.
    thanks in advance,
    Ammar

    i think you need to debug your code, lookalike the values you trying insert already exist in the database.
    these two IDs (6323df8a-5c57-4d3e-a477-09aa8b66100a, 7ae114df-9d52-4b08-affa-8c544cbc27b6).
    i would try to run the select command against the content db.
    SELECT TOP *  FROM [DB Name].[dbo].[NavNodes] where id = '6323df8a-5c57-4d3e-a477-09aa8b66100a'

  • PowerShell script to update quick launch navigation.

    Hi,
    We recently did some reorganization, which involved nesting some sites within others.  Some of these sites were based on a custom template, and as a consequence, the quick launch URLs, although relative, did not update.  I found some potentially
    useful PowerShell script, from
    here.
    function Repair-SPLeftNavigation {
    [CmdletBinding()]
    Param(
    [Parameter(Mandatory=$true)][System.String]$Web,
    [Parameter(Mandatory=$true)][System.String]$FindString,
    [Parameter(Mandatory=$true)][System.String]$ReplaceString
    Add-PSSnapin Microsoft.SharePoint.PowerShell -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
    $SPWeb = Get-SPWeb $Web
    $SPWeb.Navigation.QuickLaunch | ForEach-Object {
    if($_.Url -match $FindString){
    $linkUrl = $_.Url
    Write-Host "Updating $linkUrl with new URL"
    $_.Url = $_.Url.Replace($FindString,$ReplaceString)
    $_.Update()
    $_.Children | ForEach-Object {
    if($_.Url -match $FindString){
    $linkUrl = $_.Url
    Write-Host "Updating $linkUrl with new URL"
    $_.Url = $_.Url.Replace($FindString,$ReplaceString)
    $_.Update()
    $SPWeb.Dispose()
    The problem I see is that the original URL string is '/data/studysites/site' and the replacement URL is '/researchers/data/studysites/site', and it looks like this script would go through and repair the incorrect links while
    breaking the correct ones.
    I'm trying to use the -like operator instead of the -match operators to match the $FindString based on a URL that
    begins with '/data/studysites/site' rather than contains it, which should (I'm thinking) exclude correct links (which already start with '/researchers.').  This isn't going well though.  I am guessing I don't understand how to use the -like
    operator with wilodcard variables.  Here's what I came up with.
    function Repair-SPLeftNavigation {
    [CmdletBinding()]
    Param(
    [Parameter(Mandatory=$true)][System.String]$Web,
    [Parameter(Mandatory=$true)][System.String]$FindString,
    [Parameter(Mandatory=$true)][System.String]$ReplaceString
    Add-PSSnapin Microsoft.SharePoint.PowerShell -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
    $SPWeb = Get-SPWeb $Web
    $SPWeb.Navigation.QuickLaunch | ForEach-Object {
    if($_.Url -like '$FindString*'){
    $linkUrl = $_.Url
    Write-Host "Updating $linkUrl with new URL"
    $_.Url = $_.Url.Replace($FindString,$ReplaceString)
    $_.Update()
    $_.Children | ForEach-Object {
    if($_.Url -like '$FindString*'){
    $linkUrl = $_.Url
    Write-Host "Updating $linkUrl with new URL"
    $_.Url = $_.Url.Replace($FindString,$ReplaceString)
    $_.Update()
    $SPWeb.Dispose()
    }#endFunction
    Help much appreciated!

    Hi Mike,
    Tried that, and in that case, it didn't seem to do anything.
    function Repair-SPLeftNavigation {
    [CmdletBinding()]
    Param(
    [Parameter(Mandatory=$true)][System.String]$Web,
    [Parameter(Mandatory=$true)][System.String]$FindString,
    [Parameter(Mandatory=$true)][System.String]$ReplaceString
    Add-PSSnapin Microsoft.SharePoint.PowerShell -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
    $SPWeb = Get-SPWeb $Web
    $SPWeb.Navigation.QuickLaunch | ForEach-Object {
    if($_.IsExternal -AND $_.Url -like "$FindString*"){
    $linkUrl = $_.Url
    Write-Host "Updating $linkUrl with new URL"
    $_.Url = $_.Url.Replace($FindString,$ReplaceString)
    $_.Update()
    $_.Children | ForEach-Object {
    if($_.IsExternal -AND $_.Url -like "$FindString*"){
    $linkUrl = $_.Url
    Write-Host "Updating $linkUrl with new URL"
    $_.Url = $_.Url.Replace($FindString,$ReplaceString)
    $_.Update()
    $SPWeb.Dispose()
    I ran the script, adding the -verbose flag, and got this:
    PS C:\Scripts> Repair-SPLeftNavigation -Web http://loki/researchers/data/WHIStudies/StudySites/ -FindString "/data/WHIStudies/StudySites" -ReplaceString "/researchers/data/WHIStudies/StudySites" -Verbose
    VERBOSE: Leaving BeginProcessing Method of Get-SPWeb.
    VERBOSE: Leaving ProcessRecord Method of Get-SPWeb.
    VERBOSE: Leaving EndProcessing Method of Get-SPWeb.
    PS C:\Scripts>
    I then tried expanding the quotes to include the whole IF statement:
    function Repair-SPLeftNavigation {
    [CmdletBinding()]
    Param(
    [Parameter(Mandatory=$true)][System.String]$Web,
    [Parameter(Mandatory=$true)][System.String]$FindString,
    [Parameter(Mandatory=$true)][System.String]$ReplaceString
    Add-PSSnapin Microsoft.SharePoint.PowerShell -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
    $SPWeb = Get-SPWeb $Web
    $SPWeb.Navigation.QuickLaunch | ForEach-Object {
    if("$_.IsExternal -AND $_.Url -like '$FindString*'"){
    $linkUrl = $_.Url
    Write-Host "Updating $linkUrl with new URL"
    $_.Url = $_.Url.Replace($FindString,$ReplaceString)
    $_.Update()
    $_.Children | ForEach-Object {
    if("$_.IsExternal -AND $_.Url -like '$FindString*'"){
    $linkUrl = $_.Url
    Write-Host "Updating $linkUrl with new URL"
    $_.Url = $_.Url.Replace($FindString,$ReplaceString)
    $_.Update()
    $SPWeb.Dispose()
    This got me the following error.  It seems it is trying to "fix" some URLs that don't need fixing, but not fixing those that do. :)
    Updating /researchers/data/WHIStudies/StudySites/AS297 with new URL

  • Firefox doesn't load from the quick launch

    sometimes when i click the quick launch icon on my task bar Firefox does not load right. All i get is a blank white screen and it happens more than just a few times. I have to reload the page after i close it out. Also i keep getting issues when I click the quick launch icon that it says oops we need to restore your last session. And it was closed out properly. Especially first thing in the morning after I start up my computer. Is there anything that can be done with these issues.

    Hello,
    I am using Firefox 26.0 on Windows 7, 64-bit without any issues and want to help resolve this issue for you. To narrow down the root cause of the problem, can you please try opening Firefox in safe mode and then see if the sluggishness after repeated usage is being observed. Try opening Firefox in safe-mode each time, so that we can narrow to the root cause
    <hr>
    '''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
    ''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''option''' key while starting Firefox.
    * On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.

    ''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''

    '''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
    ''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''

  • Call an Non-SharePoint Secured RESTful API from a Workflow in a SharePoint Online Tenant

    I have a scenario where I need to be able to make calls to a secured web service from a SharePoint 2013 workflow that will be deployed in a SharePoint Online (Office 365) environment. It is a REST web service that is secured in a 2-legged OAuth-like manner
    (the service expects a hash of the data being sent that can then be validated on the service's end of the communication). The problem is, I can't figure out how I can hash the data, since I can't run any server-side code in the SharePoint Online environment.
    The way I figured this should work is 1) user creates an item in a List on the SharePoint Site, which kicks off the workflow process. 2) the workflow process takes the user data and hashes it using a client secret assigned by the web service. 3) the
    workflow creates a web request to the web service, passing the data and the hashed values. 4) the web service processes the input and returns. 5) the workflow continues to the next step.
    I can't figure out how to implement step 2 in that process. I thought I could do a custom workflow activity that would accomplish it, but since it would pretty much have to be a code-based activity (i.e., not declarative), it can't be deployed in SharePoint
    Online, according to the domentation I've found. I could potentially add a third layer in the process and have an auto-hosted app that I could call to do the hashing of the data, but that seems to defeat the purpose somewhat from a security perspective.
    Has anyone else run into this kind of scenario? Doing this in an on-premesis environment would be easy, but that's not really an option.
    Thanks!

    You should implement this by passing the values to a public (forms based auth) web method (secure over SSL) that does the hash for you and returns the value to your workflow so that it can pass it on to the other service.

    Hi Anand,
    You can export data from Excel or Access to a SharePoint list if you are using tables.

  • How to add a link under quick launch using custom actions?

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/office/bb802730(v=office.15).aspx
    Custom actions allow us to create feature to add a link under site settings, site actions menu and even central admin.
     Is there any way we can extend this feature to allow links being added under quick launch? I tried providing location Microsft.SharePoint.Navigation but that had no effect

    hi
    you don't need to use custom actions in order to add links to the quick launch menu. It allows to add links programmatically to the menu items collections directly, see e.g.
    Adding Links to Quick Launch. From this link check the following example which adds an item under the Lists heading in Quick Launch.:
    using System;
    using Microsoft.SharePoint;
    using Microsoft.SharePoint.Navigation;
    namespace ConsoleApp
    class Program
    static void Main(string[] args)
    using (SPSite site = new SPSite("http://localhost"))
    using (SPWeb web = site.OpenWeb())
    // Get the Links list or create it if it does not exist.
    SPList list = web.Lists.TryGetList("Links");
    if (list == null || list.BaseTemplate != SPListTemplateType.Links)
    // Create the list.
    Guid listId = web.Lists.Add("Links", "Interesting hyperlinks", SPListTemplateType.Links);
    list = web.Lists.GetList(listId, false);
    // Check for an existing link to the list.
    SPNavigationNode listNode = web.Navigation.GetNodeByUrl(list.DefaultViewUrl);
    // No link, so create one.
    if (listNode == null)
    // Create the node.
    listNode = new SPNavigationNode(list.Title, list.DefaultViewUrl);
    // Add it to Quick Launch.
    listNode = web.Navigation.AddToQuickLaunch(listNode, SPQuickLaunchHeading.Lists);
    Console.Write("\nPress ENTER to continue....");
    Console.ReadLine();

  • Quick launch links to documents, can only save the document once

    Hi,
    We have a problem in SharePoint 2007.
    We have some links to documents in the quick launch menu. First, these were opened as read-only per default.
    This was fixed by adding file:// instead of the http://
    Now we can save the document/excel/... once, but when clicking save a second time, office gives a non-informative error: 'The document was not saved.' with a link 'Was this information helpful?'. So it doesn't save either. This is verified, because when
    I close the document after this, it asks to 'save as' to another location.
    This is tested with a bunch of accounts, also DC admin accounts, which have full control over sharepoint.
    When opening the documents in the library, there is no problem. It's only the links in the quick launch that don't respond as required.
    Hope someone has a workaround for this.
    Kind regards,

    Just use again the http:// hyperlink and reconfigure the browser settings correct!
    File links are not made for use with SharePoint even the file links are not 100% supported in a web browser...

  • Exclude accounts from the SharePoint online search results

    We have an issue whereby I want to exlude all unlicensed Office365 accounts from the people search on SharePoint online. We have a lot of shared mailboxes etc which are showing up in the people results and we want to only display active "real"

  • How to customize the Quick Launch with Security

    I would like to add links to the quick launch with security control - some menus only show to specific user groups.
    But I do not find any way to do that, either through configuration or custom codings. Would you please advise on that? Thanks.
    Kevin Li

    Hi Kevin,
    By default, the quick launch links are managed through glabal permissions. For instance, users belonging to security groups without the "view approvals" permissions will not see the "approval center" link in the quick launch menu.
    Meaning that dealing with permissions and security groups will allow you configuring the quick launch items by groups.
    As far as I know, there is no other way to manage security for the quick launch links. Maybe other experts on this forum will give us more insight about coding this feature if possible.
    Hope this helps,

  • Quick Launch-lost phone app

    I was playing around with my phone the other day and deleted the phone from the quick launch bar... I know this has already been discussed and I can't bring it back. I've tried searching for "phone" and dragging it down but when press "phone" I can't drag it! Can anyone help with this?
    Post relates to: Pixi p120eww (Sprint)

    found another post stating to try a reboot.  The Rebooting did not replace the icon in the quick launch. However, after rebooting the phone icon appeared in the app list and was available for dragging down to the quick launch bar.  Wierd  but hey atleast it is back.  Whew.
