Recover mail & messages after Mail freeze

On our iBook G4 (10.4.11) Mail stopped & wants to set-up new account on re-opening. Looks like all our data is still on-board according to Finder. Only a very few messages retrieved. Mail on other User still works fine on same iBook. Everything is backed up on external drive, altho can't find any messages (encrypted in emix files?). How do I get it all back?

Very Important, how much Free Space is on your Hard Drive first of all? Click on the Macintosh HD on the Desktop, then do a Get Info on it.
Is this an IMAP or POP account?
Could be many things, we should start with this...

1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

Missing mail messages after upgrading

This morning my iMac asked me to upgrade to the latest Mail version and convert my existing messages. After doing so, I seem to be missing emails from present day back to May 2011. I am running OS 10.6.8, Mail V4.6 (1085). Ideas?

Yes, but I'm not sure what your problem really is, though.
First of all, just restoring the HOME/Library/Mail folder is not enough, you should have restored the HOME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist preferences file as well. This file is where most preferences and all account settings are stored.
As to the "Message has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it." error message, this is one of the many bogus error messages in Mail that have absolutely nothing to do with what the issue really is. The real problem isn't related to not being "online" at all, but rather with "overstuffed" mailbox issues, or with failed conversion from Mail 1.x, or both.
You shouldn't have experienced this problem as a consequence of just moving from one machine to another with the same version of Mac OS X, however, which is what makes me believe you didn't restore your mail data properly. If you haven't received and/or sent mail using the new machine yet, or if what you've sent/received is still on the server, I'd suggest trying to properly copy again both the preferences file and the Mail folder to the new machine. Do this while logged in as the user that's going to use those files in the new machine to avoid possible permissions issues.

Mail messages after a certain date are not syncing in IMAP

I use IMAP with Intermedia hosted Exchange (set to allow IMAP with Apple Mail). Everything has worked fine with Mail.app for years. All of a sudden, in the last week, mail in archive folders is not syncing. I receive Inbox mail and see Sent mail, but folders where I store archived messages (Friends, Travel, etc.) do not show any messages after July 10. When I go to the webmail server, I see the messages in the folders where I moved them.
I have divided large folders into smaller ones, and done a completely clean download of all mail, and the problem persists. My iPod Touch was also having trouble seeing new messages.
This is a longshot, but the one change on July 10 was that I started using Mail from a different location. Could it have something to do with the Airport base station here or even the cable Internet provider?

Update: it does not have to do with the Internet provider or local equipment. I tried downloading messages from a different network and the problem persisted.

Recover Sent Messages after Rebuild erased them

I really need some help with the following issue:
Last week I opened Mail and searched for a messages. I found it, but when I clicked it, it appeared blank. I started Rebuild and suddenly all blank messages were gone! I moved Mail out of my /library and it downloaded all again, BUT the sent messages are lost. Now I wonder if there is a way to find them somewhere on my computer (they are not stored on the servers, as I wrote them in Mail and sent them from my MBP.
Strangely not all of my 4 accounts got affected the same way. One (work) lost all! sent messages, one Yahoo lost part of it, the other nothing and Hotmail didn´t get affected at all. As I used them in the very same order most lately there might be a connection. Also the received messages lost are mostly from: University account (all before november 9th), one Yahoo (all before june 2009) and the others are intact. The received ones I could recover from the servers.
But I really would love to find the sent ones again!
All started after I upgraded Java and it didn´t get fixed by 10.6.5. or repairing permissions.

Sounds like you had some kind of corruption in your mailboxes. Unfortunately, if you don't have backups, there's really no good way to recover those messages. I think that using data recovery software to recover messages would be very difficult, not to mention the issue that you may have written over some of that data already, by continuing to use the computer. If you want to try, you could use [Data Rescue|http://www.prosofteng.com>, [File Salvage|http://subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=1] or some other recovery tool.
In the end, all this could have been avoided by simply having backups. In the future, it's simply a matter of time before you lose more data, so you should start backing up as soon as possible. See my [Mac Backup Guide|http://www.reedcorner.net/thomas/guides/backups> for assistance with that.

Using Safari to send HTML Mail message but Mail keeps dropping images?

I'd like to use Safari to send html Mail messages, but when I click on File>Mail Contents... Mail opens a new window but my graphics are gone. (I'm creating the html pages using MS Word for the Mac.) I get a flash of the graphics for a second, and then they are replaced by a little blue lego. Any ideas? I've tried all kinds of mail preferences but nothing seems to help.

Figured it out (at least one way): had to load the image to a server and then add the image as a link only (uncheck "save picture with document" box).

Recovering mail messages after deleting Account

After deleting and recreating my account, I lost all my Inbox and Sent messages. I did a back up before I did this (mbox). However when I try to reimport (Import data from "other"), I navigate to the messages folder (which I backed up to an external drive), but I get a message "Error: No valid mbox files were found". The messages are all there, in a folder as .emix files, and I can open them up when I double click. I realize that I can reimport them into Mail by the Move command, but it appears I would have to do this one message at a time (and I have hundreds!).
Is there something I can be doing here to remedy the problem?

If your accounts are POP and you didn't delete the messages, then I suspect they are still there, but Mail doesn't know it. So try this:
1. Quit Mail if it's running.
2. Go to ~/Library/Mail and delete the Envelope Index file(s).
3. Restart Mail and wait for it to import your existing messages. When it's finished, Mail should function normally and all your email should be back where it belongs with any luck.

Recovering Mail Messages after Fixing Mail from the 10.5.6 upgrade.

I installed the 10.5.6 upgrade and while using mail found I couldn't sent a new message. I rebooted on the hopes it would clear up the problem but instead Mail started up as if I was a new user. I did not reinstall the info for the 5 email addresses I use for fear I'd overwrite the existing email boxes for the 5 addresses.
I ran the upgrade combo (used the straight update the first time I went from 10.5.6) and then created a new users just for testing Mail. I ran Mail and entered the account info requested for one of my email addresses. It worked fine. Now for the question - how do I now log in as "myself" and access the mail boxes that exist on my hard drive?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Strange Mail Message after download to iPhone

After 4 message download with photos, hyperlinks, and text, the fifth (5th) message reads "This message as not been downloaded from the server". I have a 4 Gig iPhone. I've reset, removed, and re-installed my mail account (cox webmail).
Is this a problem with the 4 Gig's or something new?

I am having strange behaviourin the mail pop account after recieving email ,reading the email and exiting mail application .when I go back to read the email again it comes up with this message has not been down loaded from the server.Shouldnt all the messages recieved on the phone that are read but not deleted or thrown in the trash be saved including the content of the email?I went to the apple store today and they wernt sure what it was but asked me if they could restore it and try that i needed my phone and contacts so i didnt .any feedback on why this would happen or what settings if any could fix this

Additional folder "Messages" after mail import

Hi, I imported the mail from an old system (10.6) into a 10.8 system via "Import Mailboxes ..." in Mail.app.
I choose "Apple Mail" in the "Import data from:" window and selected the main directory where all the mailboxes and their messages sat.
After a couple of hours, after importing, the structure seemed to be replicated on the newer system,
except that every mail folder containing messages also contains a folder "Messages" showing exactly the same messages
as in the folder above.
Since that's many thousands of messages in hundreds of folders deleting the respective Messages-folder is not feasible.
How can I solve this?

Intermediate answer: The app launched correctly and the import process has started.
It is taking ages though. Over 3 hours for around 30K messages.
The message count sometimes gets stuck for 20-30 minutes or so and then starts counting again...
There are ~5K messages left to be imported. I'll let you know if it goes ok.

Lost saved mail messages after upgrading to OSX Mavericks

I rencently noticed that after upgrading to OSX Mavericks I have lost all of my saved messages from before that date, messages mainly from my gmail account that is syncing with Mail. I have also noticed that the same messages are now missing when I log into Gmail and look for them there.

I also use IMAP and the "folders" I create in the Mail App are actually created on the IMAP server.
My Mail side bar looks like this:-
Between the INboxes and the Google folders are the Smart Mailboxes (Today) and the On My Mac line which is current closed/hidden.
I have a bunch more folder that are On My Mac in here.
I went the Google Mail Web page the other day and was informed that there was a New Inbox.
I also received an email about it.
It appeared to happen just as I logged in to Google.
I not sure it this was coincidence or the trigger.

How do I recover .emix messages into Mail app?

I wanted to rebuild my mailbox because of some issues I was having with a rule not catching all the files I thought it should. I am using 4 POP accounts all on the same smtp server. I have 10s of thousands of messages so I knew it might take some time. When I selected it, all messages disappeared from all mailboxes, including the folders on my Mac. I was patient for a while, but when over 24 hours had passed with no visible sign that anything was happening. I force quit the app and relaunched. Everything was still empty. Per another discussion, I deleted the old Envelope index files from the MailData folder and relaunched. It seemed to work, taking a couple of hours to reimport, and everything looked fine. But now I find that all the old messages in my Wife's Mail account are empty. However they all still exist in her INBOX.mbox folder, but in a subfolder called Data-T0x600000673740-T75NeQ instead of the Data folder, which holds only the messages since the restart. So I have all these .emix files but how do I reimport them to the program? Remembering that they already appear in the list as if they exist.

As an update. I tried using an emix to mbox converter, but, while it did create an mbox with the ~18k messages, when imported messages had no from, date or subject entries, so finding any old message would be incredibly difficult. All formatting and attachments were gone as well.

Has anyone had a problem losing e-mail messages after viewing on the iphone

Recently, I have lost a small handful of Yahoo messages. Seriously, they just vanished into thin air. The message would be there in my list of messages, but when I would open it on the iPhone, it would be a completely different message.
Initially I thought I had accidentally deleted them, but after searching once on an actual computer, I discovered that they were truly gone. I finally contacted Yahoo about the problem, and they said that it is a known issue - the issue being a user has a message, views the inbox on ios5, tries to view the message, but then the message disappears completely..."completely" being verified by use when logged in on a non-ios5 device such as computer.
So now I'm just careful. Fine.
Now my boss is telling me that he has had some of his messages disappear from our company domain through MSExchange. WTH?? We're having our Exchange host look into the issue, but I thought I'd do some investigating of my own in the meantime.
Has anyone else experienced this?
For the record, both of the phones in question are 4s iPhones running ios5 (naturally) on Verizon. Mine is a 64GB, acquired in November 2010, and my boss' phone is a 32GB, acquired in December 2010.

I am trying to send usernames and passwords from a CSV file in Powershell to each user. I would like the email to look like this when received:
Your temporary account info is as follows:
Username: [email protected]
Passsword: password123
Please log into www.website.com to continue.
Right now this is my script:
Import-Csv c:\powershell\emailpassword.csv | ForEach {Send-MailMessage -to $_.email -subject "Temporary Username and Password" -from "[email protected]" -BodyAsHtml "Your temporary account info is as follows: <br> Username: $_.email

However it keeps doing this:

If make the body just $_.username it will work fine, it just does not like combining things.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

In the body text change $_.eamil and $_.password to be $($_.email) and $($_.password)

Transfer Mail messages between Mail accounts

I would like to transfer all messages from one of my Mail account to another Mail account for the same user on the same computer. I want to do that because I don't want to lose my old email messages when I delete the old Mail account.
Please advise.

You can accomplish this a number of ways.
Create an "On My Mac" location mailbox - one for this account's Inbox messages and one for the account's Sent messages.
Transfer messages from the account's inbox mailbox to the appropriate user created mailbox and the same for the account's Sent messages before deleting the account.
I would prefer keeping the received and sent messages for the account to be deleted separate from the account that will remain but if you don't care about this, transfer the messages from the account's inbox mailbox to be deleted to the account's Inbox mailbox that will remain and the same for the messages in the account's Sent mailbox to be deleted.
Or with the Mail.app quit and using the Finder go to Home > Library > Mail > this POP account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the POP account to be deleted). This account named folder contains the associated mailboxes for the account - Inbox, Drafts, Sent, Trash and Junk.
Copy this account named folder and place the copy on the Desktop.
Launch Mail and delete this account.
Use the Import Mailboxes feature to import the account's Inbox mailbox and Sent mailbox located in the copy of the account named folder placed on the Desktop.
