Recover Non Saved Pages Files after Crash?

Just went through the horrendous experience of loosing many hours of work in Pages when my machine unexpectedly crashed. No I did not save. I am stupid, but how hard is it to design a program to auto save and recover after crash? Microsoft seems to have figured that out.
I have downloaded a 3rd party program to do it, but it is the end of using Pages for me. I really enjoyed the layout capabilities, but the omission of a file recovery feature moves this down to a 3rd tier application that looks good but does not meet the fundamental needs of users.
I am sure the work is lost forever but if there is a solution I am missing let me know.

The point is that software can do so much for us today, spell check, grammar check, automatic date, create PDF's etc... but it cannot accommodate recover after crash?
From my perspective my only mistake was using Pages in the first place. For that I can blame myself.

  • Rescuing non-saved Pages files

The other day I was working in Pages & was very happy with myself when my computer, all of a sudden, switched itself off. I wasn't best pleased & was gutted when I realised that I had failed to save any of my work.
I came onto the Apple support site to see if there was any solution but the thread I found on the topic, located here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1910158&tstart=-1 , was very unhelpful & just said it was my own fault.
I have to say that I agree with the original poster in that every program should have the ability to save a crash file just in case, it is not hard. I like to use Logic Pro which is a far more complicated program & that manages to save your work for you, most of the time, should something go wrong. Whether you save regularly or not, you will inevitably lose something if your computer fails.
Anyway, OSX sadly offers no direct solution but I have found myself a suitable workaround for Pages that I thought I should try & make that original poster aware of. Unfortunately that original thread has been closed for some reason so I am having to start afresh.
Basically you just need to download a program called "Keyboard Spy" off of MacUpdate.com (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/11131) . Whilst Keyboard Spy is switched on it will record everything you type &, should your computer die at the worst possible moment, you will still have EVERYTHING saved on a nice little .log file on your desktop!
The only real downside is that it does record EVERYTHING you type, so you might need to fiddle around a bit with the files contents to actually find all your words but the important thing is that they will all be there.
    I hope that helps.

  • Why is one TIFF pixelated when saving .pages file as .doc?

Hi, when I save my Pages file as Word '.doc' format (using the standard 'save copy as' method, OR exporting as .doc) one of the high resolution TIFFs in the file always shows up pixelated, the other is sharp.
Do you know why one TIFF would be pixelated, and how to get them both showing sharp after saving the file as a Word .doc?
Both TIFFs are 300dpi CMYK, but are different sizes (the sharp one is smaller).
    Thanks!

when I save my Pages file as Word '.doc' format (using the standard 'save copy as' method, OR exporting as .doc) one of the high resolution TIFFs in the file ... Both TIFFs are 300dpi CMYK, but are different sizes
The thing is that .DOC is the file format for versions of Microsoft Word which were developed to work with the Windows GDI Graphics Device Interface, the counterpart of QuickDraw in Mac OS 9.2 and lower.
Neither GDI nor QuickDraw are capable of colourant formats other than RGB. There are tried and true ways around this in prepress,
    1. do not pick TIFF, JPEG, PICT or BMP file formats that are processed by GDI and QuickDraw, but pick a file format that is not processed by GDI and QuickDraw (EPS, PDF).
    2. pick a colour managed path through GDI and QuickDraw so that CMYK tagged with a source ICC colour space is converted into some form of colour managed RGB which in turn can be converted back into some form of colour managed CMYK for whatever printing condition is to be chosen (whether by a third party driver installed in the OS or by other means).
There are other possibilities, as Peter mentioned, but transparency isn't supported in GDI and DOC any more than CMYK is supported. And to go back to the beginning, why in the world are you trying to work in CMYK when you in all likelihood have no knowledge of the ink limit, graybalance and paper for the intended printing condition? You should be working in ICC colour managed RGB.

  • Restore Pages files after changing Apple ID on iPad

    Hello:
Anyone know it it's possible to restore  the Pages documents that were on the iPad after chaning the Apple ID?
When I first confirgured my iPad, I used my Apple ID to set it up; however, in the process of migrating MobileMe to iCloud, my MobileMe account became a second Apple ID.  When I switched the iPad to the Apple ID create via the MobileMe migration, all of the Pages files were deleted.
I'm looking at the iPad backups stored here:  <UserHomeDir>/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup
I was hoping it would be a simple matter of going to my hard drive back up (I have both a TimeMachine backup and a recent clone of my hard drive); however, it's not a simple matter of finding the files that were part of my original Apple ID and copying them over as the backup is stored in a file structure that does not seem to allow direct access to the files.
Any thoughts as to how I might retrieve the files are greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Warren Heaton

    Phew!
I just got off the phone with AppleCare.
It turns out that there's nothing to restore.  All of the documents that were created while using my original Apple ID are "in the cloud".  As such, they are accessible through my original Apple ID.
Logging into iCloud.com with the original Apple ID allows access to all the files.  From that page, the files can be downloaded to my Mac and then moved to the Apple ID that resulted from migrating my MobileMe account.

  • How can i restore my e-mails (especially a saved message file) after i uninstall and reinstall

I have picked up some kind of bug in my e-mail program. I have used malwarebyte and Norton and I think it is cleared up. the problem is that I now cannot send e-mails. Comcast tells me the problem is in thunderbird and I should uninstall and reinstall. I have a "saved message file" I do not want to lose. where is this file and how can I save it. thanks.

Please tell comcast from me that they are idiots.
The suggestion to uninstall and reinstall is about as likely to fix your issue as dropping the device in the bath.
So lets look at this. I assume you get some sort of error message, what is it? Exactly please.
Personally I would be putting money on Nortons being the issue as it has a very long standing habit of making mail sending and receiving difficult.
Check in the Nortons firewall that Thunderbird has full access to the internet. Automatic is not enough. Then disable all email scanning ion Nortons, reboot your computer and try sending again. Any better? A new error message?

  • Recover files after crash

I just had an unpleasant experience: I was working on some LaTeX files in Kile, then tried to open a file in Kaffeine, which made KDE crash. I had no alternative but to turn off the computer, and when I turned it on again, the LaTeX files were apparently damaged. At first, they appeared with their full sizes in the file manager, but only the first page-and-a-half came up in Kile (or in any other editor, for that matter), but after some more fiddling around (including an expedition to Windows to see if they were accessible from there - the files are on a vfat partition) they show up with file size 0.
Is there a way to recover them? Luckily, I have the dvi files from them, so I can recover the text, but I'd hate to go through all the latex coding over again.

Hate to bump such an old thread.... but this is exactly what just happened to me. And I'm going crazy considering the amount of work I've put into the document. I was just a couple lines from uploading my work... and then this. Didn't make a backup cause, honest to God, I did not expect something like this to happen.

  • Recovering Audio File After Crash

I was using Soundtrack to record a microphone via my Presonus Firepod interface for a multi-day film shoot. All was going well until on the fourth day the program decided to lock up with I tried to stop the recording. The rainbow wheel spun forever and finally the program crashed. I reopened the session file and it showed that nothing was recorded.
However, when I look in the directory where the recorded audio files are saved, it shows a 300 mb .aiff file. When I play this file all I hear is white noise.
I've done some research and what I discovered is that it seems I need to add the proper header information to the file so it can be deciphered by an audio program.
I've been fooling around with a program called SoundHack trying to add the proper header information. Occasionally I can start to hear the recorded audio, but it's still covered with some static or has a really high pitch.
Any ideas how to recover the file? It's so frustrating because it seems like the data is there, it just can't be read properly!
    Thanks in advance!

You can't trun it off, but you can empty the reovery folder if you have a corrupt doc that keeps crashing on restart. The recovery folder, by default and unless you changed it, will be in the same location as the InDesign Defaults file and those paths are listed in the thread about trashing your prefs: Replace Your Preferences

  • How to recover lost pages files after iPad update?

My friend lost all his pages and numbers documents that were on his iPad after updating yesterday. anyone know how to get them back? they weren't saved anywhere but the iPad. are the pages and numbers files stored during the device backup?

    lindsayward wrote:
Thanks. If it does an automatic backup when you connect it, which it seems this iPad does, then there will never be an older backup to restore from, is that right?
    Is there any other way..?
Yes - it will backup automatically. You can prevent iTunes from syncing automatically - which in turn prevents iTunes from backing up automatically as well - but when you do initiate the sync - it will always backup the iPad.
However, I have read that if you watch the progress bar at the top of the iPad when the sync process begins - you can click on the X in the progress bar to stop it from backing up and it will move to the next step in the sync process. I have never tried that myself. I would only use that method if the sync was hanging up from a bad backup and that would be another problem in itself - so you really don't want to do that.
What you can do is create a manual backup and then copy  that backup (don't remove it) into another folder on your hard drive. But you have to turn off auto sync so you can control the backup process.
I do not sync automatically - never have. If you want to turn off auto sync - Launch iTunes on your computer - go to Edit>Preferences>Devices>Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from syncing automatically.
Then when you connect the iPad and iTunes starts up, you can right click on the iPad name on the left and select backup. If you want to keep that backup that you just created - don't sync. Eject the iPad and quit iTunes and find the backup and copy it to another folder on your hard drive.
Read this article for more information on where you can find the backup folder.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946
To finally answer your specific question about having older backups - I do have 4 older backups of my iPad. I can't remember if they were created when I've restored my iPad - which I have done several times - or when the iOS was updated. Like I said - I did restore after the recent iOS update - to a backup that I created prior to the update. It was dated two days prior.
I hope I have given you some useful information - and not confused you further. I wish someone else would jump in on this thread and clarify the backup question that even I have - where did they all come from ...

  • MacBook Pro OSX 10.9.1 How to recover hidden files after crash?

After a crash of the HDD, the MBP needs to be reformatted. I've managed to transfer all the files to another mac (using 'T' while booting the MacBook Pro). Because I want to keep al my e-mails, I need to reach the hidden library. But in the transferred files, I can't find this hidden library. How can I get it to show up, so I can copy the Thunderbird file which contains all of the e-mails?
    Please, I'm desperate!

    Hi,
At least i'd like to try to reinstall OSX to the same HDD. It seems to be a software problem that occured after a check-up with DiscHelp (idk the specific term in english because I use the dutch version). While 'repairing' an error, a notification came up that said that it couldn't be repaired and that I had to back-up all of my files and reformat the HDD. Since then, if i try to boot up the system, the screen goes black in about 30 seconds.
The only backup I have is the direct copy I made booting up the MBP while pressing 'T' (while connected to another mac using a thunderbolt cable). So now I have a copy of the whole HDD. I tried to find the hidden ~library but i couldn't find it. In this library there are certain files i need to transfer the profile of my email. So yeah it's still readable, but as an external HDD, unfortunately not as a computer.
I really hope you can help me!
    Rick

  • How do I recover these files after crash?

About a year ago I had a major HDD failure.  An expert tried to recover many of the damaged files & I have a file full on photos, videos & music.  If I do a major search most won't open in windows.
Is there any way to recover these files?
None would have had DRM on them?
Even thought the files display title of files has name of song, artist etc. & says they are MP3.  They were indeed MP3 file.
If I click on them with the medioinfo utility it says that they are AC3 file.  I know that they could not be AC3 because I only encounter this extension when I render out my Blu-rays?
Any Ideas as to how to recover this music?
    Thanks in advance

Often when people run out of room they follow advice that moves the media folder out to another drive but leaves the library files on the internal disk. If you followed this process then your media has been preserved but the library files containing your playlists, ratings, play counts etc. will have been lost. If you can find a backup copy of the library file then it should work as long as the drive with the media is given the same drive letter that it had previously.
iTunes gives each library a unique identity. When you connect a device that has been synced with one library to a different one iTunes will see they are different and propose to wipe the device and load it with the content of this "new" library. See this post for a suggested approach.

  • Autosave File after crash

    Logic x, 10.9 Macbook mid 2010, 4 GB, 500 Gb
Since 10.9 Logic often crashes. Autosave i a good thing. But what to do, after you have choosed Saved by mistake? How can I restore the autosave

    Hi there!
Did Reader crash while you were utilizing the PDF?
    If so, here is how:
Recover from an unexpected shutdown (Reader application only, not browser)
The Autosave feature prevents changes from being lost after an unexpected interruption.
Open the files you were working on before the unexpected shutdown.
When prompted, click Yes to open the files that were automatically saved.
Save the files with the same names as the files you were originally working on.
If automatic saving is disabled, restart it from the Preferences dialog box
Right-click a document, and choose Page Display Preferences from the pop-up menu.
In the left column, select Documents, and then select Automatically Save Document Changes To Temporary File Every XX Minutes.
In the Minutes box, specify how often you want to save files.
Let me know if this helps.
    Kind regards, Stacy

  • Is there anyway to retrieve files after crash?

So iPhone wacked out and stopped working saying I had to plug in to iTunes.  Plugged in to a different itunes not on my imac and updated/restored iphone.  I get the phone back to my computer and then itunes isnt up to date phone cant work with my imac g5 ppc.  Only thing to do is purchase leopard os x 10.5 to bring itunes up to date.  After searching far and wide and dealing with bad help via apple support i order a copy from amazon in the states because not available in Canada.  The install disc completely crashes my imac(this being an apple certified product? excuse my language but ***!) Take the imac in to a certified mac shop and they install leopard but wipe everything else on my harddrive.  NO SONGS, MOVIES, FILES, all of it lost!  I fork out hundreds of dollars to upgrade and fix the problem yet Im still getting burned!  IS any of my stuff anywhere to be retrieved?  This is leading me to never purchase an apple product again!

It is not Apple's fault that you did not keep back ups of your files.  You only have yourself to blame!
