Recover original file name after rename

I apologize if I'm not asking this question in the right forum...
I received some .MOV files from a video shoot that have been renamed. I took notes on the camera-given file names, and I'm trying to recover that information. Is there any way to reveal previous namings of a file?
Thanks.

Phil Harvey's exiftool has a tag- OriginalFileName. Whether the attribute is set or not is something that you'll have to test.

  • How to recover original file names?

    Hi! Please help me.
I accidentally changed the names of the videos I was using for Adobe Premiere. So now whenever I open the Adobe Premiere file, all the videos are gone and replaced with a red "media offline" screen. Is there any way I can recover the original file names without having to do it manually one by one?
I've tried going back to the restore point but it's not working. I can't locate it one by one too because I don't remember which video is which.
I've already edited around 50 videos in that project so it would take me a loooot of time to do it all over again. :((
    Hope you can help me.

If I understand you correctly, you changed the name of the file in Windows and do not remember what the file names used to be. You edited these in Premiere Pro, and now the project files you have created do not know where to find the video files.
    Is that correct?
If so, I have what may be a simple solution for you.
Assuming you are not maxing out each file so they are all exactly the same duration, the number of minutes and seconds and frames ought to get you where you want to go. Almost as unique as a fingerprint on my PC, but I never capture a bunch of videos that are identical in duration - although it is possible to do so, I suppose.
Open a project file. Checking the properties of each file should reveal theoriginal  file name as well as the duration, which is also available right on the thumbnail image (see the image below).  Then open the Media Browser and look at the durations on each clip. This should be enough to help you either relink, or change the name in Windows back to what it was originally. This is still one at a time, but it should not take too long. A pen and paper might help with 50 videos.

  • Acrobat 5.0 How do I keep the original file name after I have converted a Word doc to PDF?

MY colleague has a certain setting in Acrobat that allows him to keep the original file name when he converts documents from Word to PDF. Every time I convert Word, Acrobat overwrites the filename and names it "untitled.pdf". I would like to retain the original name and for Acrobat to simply add the .pdf file extension to the original name. How do I do this?

I have no idea what you are doing for sure. Does your WORD document have a name. I opened a WORD document and selected the Acrobat Distiller printer for AA5, I got the file menu for selecting the name and it was automatically filled in with the DOC changed to PDF. If you are using PDF Maker, then you will need to search there - I removed PDF Maker for AA5 years ago and can't view that part. I see the same types of options in PDF Maker for AA8.1.2 as I saw in the printer for AA5 and guess it is the same. The untitled.pdf suggests that you never saved the original DOC file so it has a name.

  • Batch rename files preserving the original file name in metadata

How can I batch rename files while preserving the original file name in metadata? (Don't want the old file name as part of the new file name)
(Adobe CS Bridge can do this with some success, but I don't want to be dependant on this software. Results are inconsistent.)

With a simple terminal script. More details needed, though.

  • Rename PDF retains original file name?

I'm doing a forensic analysis of a PDF file sent from a multi-function printer. The PDF was renamed in Windows by the user but I need to determine the original PDF name as it was sent from the printer. I have used a PDF parsing tool to try and determine if the original file name is stored somewhere in the PDF itself but no joy. Any metadata I can see from simply opening the document in Acrobat Reader shows the printer model that created the PDF but not the original filename. Anyone know if this historical filename data is available to me or I've lost it ?
    Thanks.

By doing a simple save as a user can create a completely new document so your forensis isn't going to get far.  Just out of interest what are you trying to prove?  Someone may be able to suggest another way around it...

  • Mp3 will not rename - reverts back to original file name. Any suggestions?

I have a bunch of mp3 files that I would like to rename the original file name. Itunes only allows me to change metadata, but to fix broken names and keep organized, I need to change the file name.  Once I rename the file, it shows the new name, and then upon playing it, it reverts back to the original name. I do not have any locked permissions. I have parallels and tried to rename them on the windows 7 side but same effect.  I tried to shut all programs off so the file was not in use. I even tried to export it as a acc file type.  I am exhausted looking for a solution, this is why I am using this forum as a last ditch effort. Please help.

As far as I am aware, iTunes does not rename files (at least nto my older version I use).  Yes, it will insist upon the files being in certain folders which is structured from the metadata, but the files themselves keeep whatever name you use.
I suggest this be moved to an iTunes forum (you choose for Mac or for Windows).  I have never seen anybody else complain about this in the past.
One question, do you subscribe to Match?  Is there anything else using these files, some third party software?

  • All excel attachment files in Outlook web app (email) are renamed "attachment.ashx", losing their original file names. Why? And how do I fix this?

While the email displays the attachment with the "original file name.xls", when I click and download, it is called "attachment.ashx", and I lose all the original downloaded file names. This started happening about 3 weeks ago after a Firefox update. Suggestions for a fix?

Outlook Web Access sends illegal Content-Disposition headers and this is no longer allowed in Firefox 8. The server needs to be fixed.

  • Uploaded home movies revert to the original file name when added to iTunes?

I have Home Video files that I have renamed from the original file names.  When I add these files to iTunes, the files revert to the original file name at the time the file was created.  How can I add these files to iTunes with the new file name without having to rename every Home Movie that has been added?

OK I have done some more work and think i have the issue resolved. The problem lies with file formats specifically .mp4 and .m4v
I suspect the files you are importing are mp4 files. When I do this i get the same behaviour of file names changing their name after playback. When i convert my files to m4v format and import the issue disappears.

  • Tethering in Lightroom with MK III - Can't keep original file names

    Hello,
I am shooting a Canon Mark III to Lightroom 3.3 with RAW 6.3 on OS 10.5.8.  All I want to do is insert custom text in front of the original file name from the camera.  I cannot even seem to get Lightroom to allow the images to maintain the naming from the camera.  The options "filename", "original file number" and "sequence" all rename the files in accordance with Lightroom preferences.  I want to keep the naming from the camera and simply add custom text in addition to it.  I would be pleased to even learn if Lightroom can accept the name from the camera as it does not seem able to do so.  No matter what I select, input, or leave out, Lightroom seems to rename the file in some way or another.
The problem with most of the naming conventions in Lightroom is that the numbers seem to reset when the camera gets turned off.  "Sequence" is the only setting that maintains a consistent and ascending count even if the camera is turned off then back on but it still doesn't reflect the camera settings which most photographers prefer to leave on continuous.  While this affords a temporary solution, it does not fix the issue that we would prefer to see the original filename and number that the camera puts out.  I have tested all the filename settings in Lightroom (including inputting nothing) and can't seem to get the actual original camera written filename to show up.  PLEASE HELP!
It is hard to imagine that any software this powerful, especially from Adobe, could overlook and fail to execute something so crucial and basic as simply not overwriting the file info from the camera.
Thank you in advance for your help.

    Hello,
original file name is only stored in the lightroom catalog file. This means, the original filename is stored in your LR4 catalog! After you upgraded to LR5 you simply have to open the LR4 catalog and LR5 will convert the catalog into an LR5 catalog.
I hope, you still have an LR4 catalog backup (before you removed all images)? Otherwise original file name is lost.

  • I renamed songs in playlist but the original files aren't renamed. How can I sort out the originals?

I could really use some help. I'm trying to record an audio book of my second novel. I had about 300 audio tracks from recording the book in iTunes. I put them all in a playlist. Then I went through and delected the tracks that were no good from the Playlist and renamed the others so they were properly sorted by page number.
Unfortunately, I did not realize that 1) renaming tracks in a Playlist does not rename the actual original tracks, and 2) when I click "Show in Windows Explorer" not only is it the original file names, but they are mixed in with all the other tracks that I had deleted from the playlist.
Is there any way for me to isolate the tracks that are in the Playlist? I need to pull all those tracks out so I can import them into a music editing software program. I'm worried that all my time was wasted renaming the songs and now I can't figure out any way to group those tracks to import into another program.
Any advice would be much appreciated!
    Thank you.

When you look at your iPhone, are you looking in the Music app or in the iTunes app?  Be sure you are looking in the Music app, and look in the Songs category.  If your songs are not here, you may want to try syncing your information again through iTunes.  To do this, uncheck "Sync Music" and then click apply or sync in the bottom right corner of iTunes, and then recheck "Sync Music" and then click apply or sync again.
    I hope this helps!

  • In bridge am I able to return my images to their original file name?

yes/no.  Depends on whether you have checked "preserve original file name in XMP" in batch rename.

  • Easy Way To Change The Original File Name??

I store all my music and videos on iTunes. I just got a AT&T Tilt and I have to use WMP to sync to it. I can't drag and drop iTunes playlists into my media card cause my Tilt uses Windows.
My main problem with WMP is even though I edit the song/video name, it still syncs over the original file name. If I change the original file name for WMP then I have to rename it for iTunes cause when I go back to iTunes to play the song/video, it says the file is missing. It's a pain
For example, in my iTunes music foler in My Music, I have a song file named Britney_Pieceofme.mp3. I edit the name of the song and artist to Britney Spears Piece Of Me but when I sync it to my phone, the original file name appears.
    Thanks!

I think you may need to "look" into the song to see what information is contained in the mp3 tag. WMP automatically sees that information and will store the song at the name in the tag. To solve your problem, you will need an mp3 tag editor (google search) where you can change the tags on your songs, then put them on your Tilt. I think/hope this solves your problem.

  • Retrieving original file name

Recently changed file names and now need to revert back to the original file name created via camera.  Can this be done in LR 4 or is this info deleted?
    Thanks!

It depends on where you did the rename.....if you did it in Lightroom then yes the original file name is retained (see the Metadata Panel for old and new names). But if you renamed before importing, then no, Lightroom will have no record of the original name.

  • Getting original file name to show in Metadata list.

I always convert to dng first thing. Then rename the files with clients name. I know that the original file name is still in the metadata, but how do I get it to show up on LR's metadata list?

Ah. Thank you very much. I figured it was simple, just did not have time to play around to try to find it. I do not often need it, but sometimes my boss will edit a shoot before giving it to me. I prepare it for the customer. Sometimes he has wanted an image that he has under the original file name. So, this helps. Thanks again.

  • Original file name problem

    Hi all,
Got this wierd problem with DMS.
I am opening (in change mode) an excel document stored in our DMS for editting, then I check it back in again. When I check it back in again and save, the orignal file name is getting the temp folder name appended to it!
In CV02n I have setup a Temp working directory for files, e.g. N:\Mydocs. Lets say my document is called "Requirements.xlsx" , everytime I open the document, make some changes and check it back in again SAP is adding the temp directory name to the original file name... after 3 or 4 check out/ins the file name is now "MydocsMydocsMydocsMydocsRequirements.xlsx"!!!
How do I stop SAP appending the folder name to the original file name?

    Doh!
I've just figured out my own problem.
The temp working directory setup in CV02n did not have a "\" on the end of the path... so SAP thinks it's a name not a location.
changing the Temp working directory to N:\Mydocs\ solved the problem.
