Recover server from Raid 1 mirror

I have a Sunfire V210 with 2 hard drives using Raid 1 to mirror the drives. After a power outage the primary hard drive has become corrupted - I have booted from cdrom -s and tried to do an fsck on the root corrupted partition but it has a bad superblock and none of the alternatives will work so I do not know if I can recover the drive.
What I have been able to do though is mount the second mirrored hard drive from the cdrom and it all looks to be in tact. Is there anyway I can use this hard drive to restore the corrupted drive or make this drive the primary drive, boot from it, swap the corrupted drive and make it the mirrored drive or is there a better solution?
Thanks.

At the ok prompt try: 'boot disk1' (you've probably replaced the disk by this
but it would be good keep in mind for the next go-round)

  • Recovering data from a damaged mirrored RAID

I have a puzzle I'm hoping you can help me with: I have a mirrored RAID array in a MD G4 which is not mounting (since going to Apple for replacing the logic board).
I have tried connecting both drives to a Forensic FireWire dock to no avail; they show up as "spare" and not as a "slice".
    Any suggestions?

Maybe, I just cannot say with authority.  Even if they were physically the same, the question is what OSX is on the older SSD.  If it is older than the one the new MBP came with, it will not work.

  • Recovering data from RAID 0 working disks on a laptop.

As a former Windows user, I setup a two disks RAID 0 years ago where I put stuff I don't remember. Now I sold my old PC, the RAID controller card broke down, but I retained my working disks because I'd like to recover data stored in there.
Is there any way you guys know to recover data files from those 2 disks? I thought of treating them as external drives (I've got a MBP, so this is the only one expansion option), make images of them, mounting them and then copy the data in my MBP.
    Thanks!

I would say the Windows PC would be your best bet but the odds of recovering anything at all is still extreme poor even there.
The way RAID 0 works is a bit like dealing cards. When you start a new hand in a card game the dealer deal a card to each player in turn. In the case of RAID 0 the computer is the dealer and the disks are the players.
So what you are attempting to do is undeal the hand. Now while that may sound trival, it is in fact not. Hence on of the reason that everyone says RAID Arrays should always be backed up.

  • General question about data recovery from raid on windows server !

    hi,
I like to buy data recovery software for windows server  to recover data with  any raid( or whitout raid
so the company tells me you should be sure the Raid can be recognized correctly as local disk drive first, otherwise, our product  wil not help you.  so if I want to recover data of my customers which has windows server with any raid form ,how
I can make this server harddisks(which is raid 1,5,6 ect)recognized coorectly as local disk drive.
    thanks

I have myself NAS which is connected to my computer through router.
I am started smal bussines ,and I want to use also data recovery service for deleted documents, photo's,formatted drives ect.for my customers .things that accidantally errased from raid or non raid
so I found some data recovery softwares
1-stellarphoenix data recover, which has remote acces and netwerk acces.
2--ease use data recovery software.  I liked this second software, but they telling me like this,
you should be sure the Raid can be recognized correctly as local disk drive first, otherwise, our product  wil not help you.
I understand the both situations you telling me.thanks
but my question is can I not run data recovery software from bootable usb stick on the smal  servers like essential with raid to recover data in case of any problems that caused data loose.
I know if I install data recovery software on the server to scan it ,it wil rewrite some places on harddisk and that is not wise.

  • Can I install Snow Leopard and boot from software RAID 1 (mirror)?

I have a Mac Pro (quad core 2.66 GHz) on order for my office workstation. Yeah, I know new ones are probably coming out early next year but due to budget and upcoming projects I need one now. What I'd like to do is replace the pre-installed 640GB drive with two 1 TB drives and mirror them. The 640GB drive will be redeployed to another machine in the office. Can I boot from the Snow Leopard install DVD, go to Disk Utility, setup a RAID 1 with the two drives, install Snow Leopard to the mirror and then boot off the mirror set?
I've searched and found offhand comments to the effect that installing to and booting from a software mirror is OK, but I'd like to know for sure that it's OK. Any experience that you have with such a configuration would be nice to hear.

Yes. But before you do read the following:
    RAID Basics
For basic definitions and discussion of what a RAID is and the different types of RAIDs see RAIDs. Additional discussions plus advantages and disadvantages of RAIDs and different RAID arrays see:
    RAID Tutorial;

    Hardware or Software RAID?
RAID Hardware Vs RAID Software - What is your best option?
RAID is a method of combining multiple disk drives into a single entity in order to improve the overall performance and reliability of your system. The different options for combining the disks are referred to as RAID levels. There are several different levels of RAID available depending on the needs of your system. One of the options available to you is whether you should use a Hardware RAID solution or a Software RAID solution.
RAID Hardware is always a disk controller to which you can cable up the disk drives. RAID Software is a set of kernel modules coupled together with management utilities that implement RAID in Software and require no additional hardware.
    Pros and cons
Software RAID is more flexible than Hardware RAID. Software RAID is also considerably less expensive. On the other hand, a Software RAID system requires more CPU cycles and power to run well than a comparable Hardware RAID System. Also, because Software RAID operates on a partition by partition basis where a number of individual disk partitions are grouped together as opposed to Hardware RAID systems which generally group together entire disk drives, Software RAID tends be slightly more complicated to run. This is because it has more available configurations and options. An added benefit to the slightly more expensive Hardware RAID solution is that many Hardware RAID systems incorporate features that are specialized for optimizing the performance of your system.

  • Though the root disk is mirrored, server is unable to boot from alternate disk (mirror disk)

    Hi PPl,
It happened second time in a row. Though the root disk is mirrored, server is unable to boot from alternate disk (mirror disk)
When the disk was found faulty, still unable to boot the OS from alternate disk, it says it still probe/look for other disk
Here are the console log when I tried to boot the OS
    sc> console
Enter #. to return to ALOM.

In such condition left out with only two options.
    1)      Remove the faulty disk physically and boot
    (or)
    2)      Replace the faulty disk and boot it
Any way, I can disable the faulty disk in BIOS (or) booting from cd-rom and do something to avoid it?

You can't boot from systems earlier than that shipped with the computer. For example, early 2008 Mac Pros come with 10.5.1 and can't boot 10.5
Also you can't boot with a DVD that was shipped with a different model Mac.

  • Can I recover my Mountain Lion Server from my Time Machine Backup if there was no Recovery HD created moving from Lion?

Several years ago I upgraded my Mac Server from Snow Leopard the to Lion and then to Mountain Lion, where it is now. I believe I can fix a problem if I can rebuild my Mountain Lion Server from my Time Machine backup, however I just discoved that there is no Recovery HD on the drive.  Is there still a way to use my Time Machine Backup to rebuild the server drive?
    Any help will be appreciated.

    Recovery Drive – Restore Missing

  • Recovering data from HD ????????

    Hi
My HD died on my G5 a few months back
I am wondering if it would be possible to recover data from it
    The situation is this
I had the idea that maybe if i start up my G5 whilst pressing T & connecting it up to my Macbook Pro via firewire 800 I might see the drives & be able to get files off there
I didnt see the drives on the desktop but if i opened Disk Uility both drives on the G5 Are there
They are both displayed as firewire drives each is named with another name underneath which is greyed out
I can click on each drive but in repair all options "Repair Permisions, Repair disc ETC are greyed out
I then tried to boot my Macbook pro with the installation disc & using disc utility from the installation CD with the same resut
Now if i can get this far I should be able to take it one step further & be able to get data from the HD or am i just grasping at straws
    Any Ideas please ??

    A. I would suggest never use CD or DVD.
    B. Setup a disk drive just for repairs.
    C. Get in the habit of using backup like SuperDuper
If you are running Leoaprd, use TimeMachine in addition to SuperDuper. SD makes an update that is bootable. And you want to insure it works.
Data Rescue II from Prosoft sounds like a good idea.
I would pick up a couple drives. A new boot drive, and one for backups, and to recover to. OWC has WD 640GB for $69.
Only use idential drives when creating a RAID, whether stripped or mirror. And yes, some tests treat the volumes rather than the physical mechanism.
SMART is not that helpful. When you tested in DW, it wrote to system log and shows how many spare blocks are left, used, which can be helpful.
TechTool Pro is 4.6.2 (5.0 is out also) and can scan a drive for weak/bad sectors.
You may need multiple backups. An original system and another of your data. When you used RAIDs you need to be doubly sure. And the best way to use maintenance utility is regularly, preventative medicine.

  • Mac Mini Server with Raid 1

    Hi,
Is it possible to set up a Mac Mini Server with Raid 1 using only another mac computer such as a mac book?

Yes- Colin Jeukens posted step by step instructions back a couple of months ago. Here it is again...
Out of the box the mini comes without Raid. You have two identical HDs of 500Gb.
I have just set it up as Raid1. You can't do this when you use the startup disk from the mini. And as you don't have a Superdrive ... you need to be creative. You need another Mac with Firewire.
Step 1: Start the Mini in Target Mode. Press the T during start. In a few seconds the firewire logo will appear on your screen.
Step 2: Go to your second Mac. Connect the firewire cable between second Mac and Mini.
Step 3: On the second Mac start the disc utility. The two identical drives on your mini will show. Create a new Raid set (mirrored = Raid 1). Include both drives. Confirm the warning that all data on the mini will be lost.
Step 4: Make sure your second Mac has CD/ DVD sharing option installed. This is tou use the superdrive to install OS X Server on the mini.
    Step 5: Shutdown both Macs
Step 6: Start your second Mac in target mode. Make sure the firewire cable is still connected.
Step 7: Start the Mini with the option key pressed.
Step 8: Insert the OS X Server install disc in your second Mac.
Step 9: wait till the drive logo apears om the Mini. Continue the install. Will take about an hour.

  • Raid 1 Mirror Storage Spaces

    Hello,
I create a Storage Spaces RAID 1 mirroring pool with two identical SATA Hard Disks. If I pull only ONE of the disks and connect it to another computer SATA connector with Windows 8 or Server 2012 installed OS, is the data readable on this computer?
If I put this disk on a hard disk enclosure (USB enclosure) am I be able to see the files on this disk, because doing mirroring in Windows 7 creates a dynamic disk that can't be connected afterwards on a USB enclosure in order to see the data on it. Has
this limitation been overcomed from Windows Server 2012.
    Thank you

    Hi,
I did that on my test machine. I can read database on the PhysicalDisk when attach it to another Windows Server 2012 computer.
Firstly, create a storage pool with two PhysicalDisks on a Windows Server 2012 computer. Then create a mirror virtual disk and new a volume save soma files on the volume.
After that, remove a PhysicalDisk from the first server and connect it to another Windows Server 2012 computer. System recognize the PhysicalDisk as a storage pool. The storage pool need to be set to read-write then attach virtual disk. In disk management,
set the virtual disk to online, then we could read the file on the saved on the PhysicalDisk.
As I did my test on my virtual machine and the PhysicalDisk is a virtual hard disk, you may need to do a test on your machine.

  • New Server for SMB using Mirror Drives

I'm setting up anew Windows Server 2012 R2 Server.  I have mirrored a pair of 1tb drives and have an additional drives (1 tb, 500 gb and a 100gb SSD) in the box.  My purpose in mirroring the primary disks is for resiliency in case I disk fails
the server should be able to continue and be bootable.  I mirrored them use the disk manager.
Is this the preferred approach or should I leave them un-mirrored and create a mirrored disk using server manager and create virtual disks that are mirrored?  Will this approach protect the hypervisor host ?

    Hi,
Do you mean you want to mirror a boot disk with windows storage pool?
According to the blog, you cannot boot from storage space.
    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/olivnie/archive/2013/02/05/windows-8-storage.aspx
If you really want to do this, a hardware RAID could be your choice.
    Hope this helps.

  • Broken RAID 1 Mirror

I have uncovered today that my RAID 1 10.4.11 G5 server has had the mirror break sometime before or when I did the the upgrade from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11. I've been looking around, and I can't seem to find direction on how to properly 'break' the mirror.
I'd like to 'break' the mirror so I have 1 good drive, then clone the drive, and re-establish the mirror. Can someone point me in the direction of some documentation or guide me through that process?
At the moment I'm scarfing up a copy of the data so if 'really bad things' happen, we'll not be waiting too long to restore and repair things. It's always good to have an 'extra' copy of your backup!
    Thanks for the help!

    Hi
The way I would do this would be to remove the internal RAID 1 Set (both drives). I'm guessing the current RAID set contains everything? OS and Data? Install one of them in an external drive case. They're cheap enough and besides are a useful thing to have.
Install the replacement drives. Connect the external drive case (should be firewire). Boot from any installer disk that will boot the hardware being used. Launch Disk Utility from the appropriate Menu. Partition the two new drives. Create a RAID 1 Mirror Set. Make sure you select the 'Automatically rebuild RAID' option. Leave everything else at their defaults. Use Disk Utility to restore the external drive (as the source) to the newly created RAID Set (as the destination). This will take some time as data is written to both drives. When done set the internal RAID set as the Startup Disk. Restart and disconnect the external drive. Remove the drive from the external drive case and place it with the other drive. Put these away and keep them safe for a short while just in case.
Out of curiosity does the hardware/OS support booting from 1.5TB drives? I'm guessing it does otherwise you would not have bought them?

  • Setting up the Mac Mini (non server) with RAID 1

  • Photoshop CS6 can't save to server after upgrading to Mac OS Yosemite Server from Mac Lion Server

We recently upgraded our server from a Mac Pro 2008 with OS X Lion Server to a Mac Mini 2014 with LaCie 20TB 5Big Thunderbolt 2 RAID drive. Everything is working fine with the exception of Photoshop. It does it intermittently but once it happens it will continue to do so. We get message like "Can't save to disk because of disk error" and "Can't save file because of program error" . Sometime we are able to do a "save as" and save over it. Most of the time we have to "save as" with a different file name and then rename and recopy the file. We have check permission on all the file as well as the server HD has ignore ownership checked. Again only three things changed. 1) Sever hardware change from Mac Pro to Mac Mini. 2) Server software upgraded from 10.7 Lion to 10.10 Yosemite(both have the latest update). 3) Drive when from internal on Mac Pro to External Thunderbolt 2 LaCie drive. We have no problem with Illustrator or Indesign. Only Photoshop. Anyone with any suggestion is greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately you seem to be using Photoshop in a way that Adobe discourages, so you may not be getting a lot of helpful advice.

  • 10.7 Server - Remove RAID 0 ?

Hi, I recently upgraded my Mac Mini SL server to Lion server ... after having some troubles I reinstalled it.
I configured the drives (2x500GB) to be in a raid array (mirror).
Is it possible to remove the raid easily?
    i was thinking of:
    - Superduper the entire disk to an external device
    - Remove the raid config leaving 2 separate disks
    - Restore the superduper image to the first disk;
    - (use the second one as a TM-backup).
I not quite happy with Lion as it is extremely slow. Opening safari or any othe application causes the system to not respond for a few seconds, even minutes. Could the raid config be a cause of these hickups?
    Kind regards
    Y

Is the OS installed on the RAID drive? It seems really strange that everything would be so slow... are you sure both drives are healthy? Have you run Techtool Pro or some other disk utility on them?
As far as cloning the drive, your plan should work. I use CCC to clone my boot volume nightly, and can boot back and forth as needed. But if the drives are running poorly (the drives in the Mac Mini are like 5200 RPM laptop drives), it might take forever to clone.
