Recover USB flashdrive

Hi guys, I was trying to format my USB flashdrive but something went wrong, now the drive's LED keeps on blinking and it won't show up in my desktop, and trying a manual mount says:
mount: no medium found on /dev/sdb
BUT, lsusb does show the drive, so its not dead! how can I restore this?
Here is the output of lsusb (relevant line only):
Bus 001 Device 006: ID 1b1c:1a01 Corsair
I really, really want to fix this drive, its 36GB and USB 3.0 , it would be terrible to trash it!
Any help greatly appreciated!!

I actually had a similiar experience lately, when copying the latest install media to a usb stick.
Something went wrong, and when I tried to recover, I got errors when trying to fdisk:
[root@worker500 johnea]# fdisk /dev/sdb
Welcome to fdisk (util-linux 2.21.1).
Changes will remain in memory only, until you decide to write them.
Be careful before using the write command.
fdisk: unable to open /dev/sdb: No medium found
The block device shows in dmesg, and lsusb:
[1945260.792262] usb 1-1: new high-speed USB device number 55 using ehci_hcd
[1945260.916877] scsi14 : usb-storage 1-1:1.0

[1945261.921843] sd 14:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI removable disk
[root@worker500 johnea]# lsusb
Bus 001 Device 055: ID 1307:0163 Transcend Information, Inc. 256MB/512MB/1GB Flash Drive
The dd command suggested gives a similiar error to fdisk:
[root@worker500 johnea]# dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdb bs=8M
dd: opening '/dev/sdb': No medium found
The device seems pretty well bricked.
In my case it's a 1G usb 2.0 stick. So it's not a great loss, but it is a little scary, not knowing how it happened.
I haven't found any solution, just wanted to include the additional data.

  • How do I import backup files of Thunderbird profiles and Firefox bookmarks from my Windows XP computer, which are on a USB flashdrive, to my Windows 7 computer?

Carbonite provided me with complete backup copy of all files on my prior Windows XP computer, on a 32GB Data Traveler USB flashdrive, so I can transfer them to my new windows 7 computer.
Many of those files will simply restore....but, I believe that all my Firefox bookmark files and my Thunderbird address book and local folders files will need to be "imported" by some procedure to make the transition from WinXP to Win7.

  • MDT 2013 deploying OS from USB Flashdrive failed - need to click OK everytime

We are using MDT 2013 with ADK 8.1 and deploying Windows 7 x64 using media (USB Flashdrive). We can successfully deploy Windows 7 x64b using ethernet cabel but not via USB-Flashdrive. This problem appears on all our HP EliteBook
Series, old as new computers series. We can boot into WinPE 64 bit and start the proper task sequence, all image is applied then after restart, after the logon screen appears there is an error saying that cannot find "USB media?".
But after clicking "OK" it works fine until next reboot, same thing again, but the drive is recognized!
I downloaded all USB drivers from HP website that holds USB 2.0 and 3.0 and drivers that contains open driver files like .inf and .dll files and injected them with the "Profile" that contains all drivers and packages.
It seems like it needs a timeout because of the script is trying to early to find the USB-flashdrive.
    Any ideas?
Sorry for language, but you get the Point.

    Hi,
I would like you to clarify following questions with me:
    1. Did you keep the USB plugged in during the restarting?
    2. Have you make any task sequence to install applications after log in? If so, have them been installed properly?
Then, please help to collect a boot trace to let me know the details:

you can surely put those packages onto a removable media & to install those packs with pacman you need to copy those to /var/cache/pacman/pkg directory.
    then just do
    pacman -S package
BTW i burned this package to a dvd (wvdial) and went to my dvddrive and it wasent there:)
can't understand this. might be u r saying that u burned wvdial to a dvd & it wasn't there, so there are chances that that dvd is corrupt or burning didn't happen properly

  • When I attach USB flashdrive to my new Mac Air no icon appears.  I just finished downloading pictures off of old mac and that one worked as expected. The new computer doesn't show anything but when I pull USB out pompts message improper eject. Any ideas?

When I attached my USB flashdrive to my new Mac Air no icon appears and the same when I attached my new superdrive.  I just finished downloading pictures off of my old Mac and that one worked as expected. The new computer doesn't show anything but when I pull the USB flashdrive out, a message prompts me with an improper eject notice. Any ideas on why no icon (a disc) appears and how can I get it to?

Open Finder preferences, click on the General icon in the toolbar. Check the boxes for what you want displayed on the Desktop. Click on the Sidebar icon in the toolbar and do the same for what you want displayed in the sidebar.

  • HT4718 What USB Flashdrive can I use for the Recovery System a 4G or a 8G?

What size of drive do I need for the Recovery System? Can I use a USB flashdrive?

If you're talking about just the Recovery HD, you only need 1GB so use a 4GB USB thumb drive and the OS X Recovery Disk Assistant to create it.
If you're talking about the ML installer (installESD.dmg) use an 8GB USB thumb drive.

  • Usb flashdrive stopped working after upgrade [SOLVED]

When I attach my flashdrive I do not get the usual sda1 device node, just an sda... What can I do? The drive works in Windows of course. Fdisk /dev/sda says "Unable to read /dev/sda", dmesg mentions the usb attach, but nothing about partitions of course...

    :(Anyone?
I thought I would just repartition the drive, but fdisk says
    Unable to read /dev/sda
Edit: after some messing around with the system (mainly rolliong back and forth different packages) I came to the conclusion that this is a kernel problem (2.6.19 works fine, while 2.6.20 not) - while I could not rollback the nvidia driver to 2.6.19 at least I know what the problem is. But of course this will not fix it...

  • Recover usb drive that has folder protected

hi. I protected various folders on a 1tb usb drive using an administrator account on windows 7.
when replacing my pc I deleted the original administrator account.
now I cannot access my usb drive files using the new administrator account.
I get "Access is denied" and options to re-format the drive.
How do I recover from this mess ?
    Thanks

You can boot your comptuter into Windows Recovery Environment.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh825173.aspx
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/make-system-repairs-from-the-windows-recovery-environment-from-windows-vista-inside-out
    Open the command line.
Then you have system rights to this drive.
Copy all your files from the USB drive to an other drive.

  • Using a usb flashdrive...

    hi,
well i've been trying to figure our why i can't open or see items from my geek squad flashdrive. The flashdrive works on other computers, but when i try it on mine, it doesn't even appear on the desktop. And yes, i have tried the different usb drives. Any help?

It does not need to be formatted for Mac, but some USB flash drives may have special features aimed at Windows users, and such features can possibly interfere with use on a Mac.
There are two common Windows formats. One is called FAT32. FAT32 can be used (read and write) by Mac OS X. FAT32 is called +MS-DOS (FAT)+ in Disk Utility. The other one is called NTFS; it is the more modern Windows format. Mac OS X can only read NTFS; it cannot write it. Either way, the flash drive should appear on the Desktop when you connect it.
If you can see the flash drive in Disk Utility's sidebar, does it have a volume indented below the drive. If so, select the volume under the drive in the sidebar. At the bottom of the Disk Utility window, you can see what format it is using currently.
Another point of confusion may be what appears on the Desktop. Open Finder's preferences (click on Desktop and select Preferences under Finder in the menu bar). On the General tab, make sure all the boxes under +Show these items on the desktop+ are checked. You can do the same thing on the Sidebar tab, which controls what appears in the sidebar of a Finder window.

    Hi,
Do you have any important data which you have to recover ? Otherwise just format it.
    Regards.

  • Imac wont boot off windows usb flashdrive

I was able to create a bootable flash drive for windows in bootcamp. My imac(2010 running lion)'s superdrive is broken so I'm using usb to boot off of. I have refit/refind installed, the drive shows up with refit/refind but not from the normal efi menu. When I try to boot off of it form refit/refind it gives me an error "no bootable devices found". I heard that macs with superdrives can only boot off of a cd/dvd.
I tried booting off a 2012 macbook pro (with a superdrive) running mountain lion. It worked perfectly. So I guess it doesn't have to do with only booting from cd/dvd and the flashdrive is fine.
I don't know what to do to get my computer to recognize the flashdrive. The normal efi menu doesn't recognize it, but refit/refind does but that won't boot.

What did you update from? Presumably you updated to Snow Leopard 10.6.2. Have you tried updating from the combo update on Apple's site rather than the incremental update via "Software Update"? That might fix this otherwise mysterious problem.

  • Backup of the OS to a USB flashdrive

I rather restart from scratch, and reinstall Windows 8 on my B580 i5
I saw, in another post, this
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=HT076024
The idea is to create a USB flash drive with the OS to reinstall. The method says:
Below are the instructions for creating the Lenovo Microsoft Windows 8 preload Recovery Media for Lenovo Think branded systems.  A minimum 16GB USB flash drive is required to make a complete backup.
Open Recovery applet by pressing the Microsoft Windows key and X.  Select "Control Panel" from the menu and then select "Recovery" from the Control Panel pane as shown below.
But, in my case, I am unable to see any Recovery Option in the CP. The CP has 8 categories, none of them called "Recovery".
What have I to do to get to that point and make a backup of the OS, for further reinstallation of OS (as shipped by Lenovo)?
    thanks

     hi amc4042,
When you're in the Control Panel, you can get to the Recovery option by changing the Category view to Large Icons. Click on the spoiler for the location.

  • Hi, I have downloaded a tv episode from itunes and would like to copy it to a usb flashdrive to watch on my tv which has a usb port, can anyone tell me if this is possible please?  I can see the tv episode in my Library but i can't drag to usb drive

    Hi
I have downloaded a tv episode from itunes, I would like to watch it on my tv, not the computer.
My tv has a usb port, what I would like to do is copy tv episode to usb flash drive and then play on my tv.
I have tried dragging the episode from the library to the usb drive, I thought I had been successful but when I looked it was just text.
Can anyone advise if it is possible please ?

It won't work, they are linked to your account and can only be played via iTunes on a computer, an iOS device or Apple TV. You might be able to get a cable to link your Mac to your TV so that you can play/mirror it through your TV e.g. if it's a Macbook with an HDMI socket and your TV also has an HDMI socket then you could try an HDMI to HDMI cable (Apple do them, and electrical stores should also have them) - I've used one to play iTunes TV programmes on my TV (though I don't think that I got sound through my TV, only my Mac).
