Recovered data and can see hidden files

I just recovered about 200gigs of data (iPhoto Libraries, ITunes Libraries). I am looking through the folders and trying to clean up. I noticed lots of hidden which are now shown. Is their a simple way to hide all hidden files, like the Windoze settings 'hide all system files' ?

Try using one of these small utilities, like TinkerTool, Cocktail, OnyX for example.
There is a Hide/Show Hidden Files feature.

I can see hidden files

I formated my HD and installed Leopard from the beginning. I let it to upgrade from Internet and sync with Apple .mac to get my contacts/calendars...
After all that, I opened finder and my surprise was to see 13 folder in my HDD !!!.
I have checked and I have system files hidden, so I do not know how I can see all this. I have search here and found that there is a bug when restoring from images, but I did not do that.
How I set this files again to hidden???.
I can see: etc (link), tmp (link), var (link), bin , cores, private, sbin, usr and volumes.

Hi - to stop hidden files showing in Finder go to terminal (in utilities) and type:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
then press enter and type:
killall Finder
then press enter again. To make them show up again in finder do exactly the same, but substitute TRUE for FALSE in the first command.

p.s. be careful with hidden files - they are hidden for a reason!

So it appears you have only one library on the hard drive. Apply the two fixes below in order as needed to that library:
Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.

Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Would like to move iPod touch files to my new Windows 8 computer -- read on how to do this, but this involves being able to see the hidden fiels -- but can not see hidden files...any suggestions. Would like to transfer these files from iPod Touch to new laptop without software -- is that possible -- if not can anyone recommend a good free software to use?

There is no way to do so without software. I recently had a similiar task and was suggested to use iExplorer. It worked like a charm.

Yes and no. It depends on your settings.
Go into "System Preference" and click on "Sharing"
If you have services checked such as "File Sharing" then others can see your computer on the network. But you really don't need to worry because others would need your username and password to have access to your files.
What you see are just computers annousing themselfs on the network. To have access to said computers, Username and Passwords are required.

Can't see hidden files

Hi all,
I am trying to find a hidden file however when I type into Terminal the following command, nothing happens. I have tried relaunching Finder and nothing happens.
"defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE"
Before installing Mavericks, I used the an application called "Houdini" which worked fine. Now when I open that app and toggle the hidden files, nothing happens again.
Any help would be much appreciated!

Nevermind, I figured it out. Just had to type in
killall Finder
and then the command again and it worked

How do I find and free the hidden files on external drive?

I cannot see , or free, space on my external drive.
It is a Seagate Freeagent 500 GB disk. I am using 100GB for photos and music. Only 38 MB are reported free. How can I reclaim the rest of the space?
I had used in the past as Time machine backup. To create space I moved to trash the file Backups.backupd (as I now have another disk for Time Machine). I can't see this file in the Trash, and I can't see the space in Finder. How do I find / free the space?
The disk format is MAC OS Extended journaled. Disk utility reports no errors. I have run verify and fix, and also erase free space, with no result.

Erase free space only wipes clean the 38 MBs that are already free. Click here to see hidden files.
However, I'd just make a copy of the 100 GBs in use, and then complely wipe the disk.
Don't try to delete the Backups.backupd folder by Finder. It's not a good idea to mix Finder and TM.

You can't see by default hidden files through Finder. However, you can do it with a command that you can copy in Terminal (in /Applications/Utilities). Open this application and type:

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this test is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The "Guest User" login created by "Find My Mac" is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

If they are just text files, download TextWrangler which is a great free text editor, and it has an "Open Hidden…" option. Additionally, It will allow you to "unlock" system files, make modifications, and save using an admin username and password.

I need to find and upload a hidden file for an app service issue

I need to locate a hidden file, filename.plist which is on a networked drive, and upload it to the company;s wed=biste for the to support the app. Obviously 'filename' is just a word. there is a long and complex filename.
Finder spins its wheels uselessly when I ask it to search. The action gear thingy has no useful options to see hidden files that I can see. And the upload part of the website, while it lets me enter the filename in the search box, just spins uselessly, too.
The file is held on a networked freestanding drive. That isn't of itself, any real problem. I just need to find it and upload it so I can get support. I don;t mind using some utility to grab a copy of it somehow, and uploading that! BUT I am not hugely technical, so I need to be spoon fed.

You can use Terminal to find the file you are looking for.
Let's say your network drive is named Net_Drive
find /Volumes/Net_Drive -name filename.plist
if you know the exact file name or
find /Volumes/Net_Drive -name *.plist
to search for all file names ending with .plist

I need to get last modified date and time of a file in remote machine.
This file is in remote machine which has apache server installed.
I am trying to get this information by connecting to apache server from client by giving absolute URI of the file to file object.
URI is got from apache server URL by using toURI method.
when I use lastModified method , its throwing exception , because scheme of URI is not file.
I can't give scheme as file because ftp server is not installed on that server
Is there any other way to get this information .
