Recovered files are being found in the trash can! Is this normal?

Why do I sometimes find Recovered items i.e. files in the trash can. These files (I do not know which application causes them) are put in a folder called Recovered Folder. I normally shut down my laptop or put it to sleep. I do not have the shut down issue other users complain from. I thought that this is what happens when computer shuts down in middle of applications, however as I said I do not have the shutdown issue and I normally put my computer to sleep.

Try using a data recovery product such as the ones listed here. Don't write anything else to the drive until the file is recovered or you choose not to recover it.

How can i recover items that were emptied from the trash can?

Basics of File Recovery
Files in Trash
If you simply put files in the Trash you can restore them by opening the Trash (left-click on the Trash icon) and drag the files from the Trash to your Desktop or other desired location. OS X also provides a short-cut to undo the last item moved to the Trash -press COMMAND-Z.
If you empty the Trash the files are gone. If a program does an immediate delete rather than moving files to the Trash, then the files are gone. Recovery is possible but you must not allow any additional writes to the hard drive - shut it down. When files are deleted only the directory entries, not the files themselves, is modified. The space occupied by the files has been returned to the system as available for storage, but the files are still on the drive. Writing to the drive will then eventually overwrite the space once occupied by the deleted files in which case the files are lost permanently. Also if you save a file over an existing file of the same name, then the old file is overwritten and cannot be recovered.
General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive. Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk. Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

Web links (URLs) are being parsed in the conversation feed - disable this?

I noticed that some of recent updates in skype for mac started to be too clever with links I post in conversations - it tries to fetch the content, parse it and present some small excerpt if it in the conversation. But I mostly message links to closed sites - like Google Docs or internal knowledge base - and they require logging in. So, I know mostly see in my conversations with collegues something like this. How can I disable this behavior? I want to see plain links, I do not need this supersmart parsing.

Well, I want to see IMAGES in the chat (i.e. someone transmits actual image data), but I don't want to see WEB PREVIEWS (previews of web pages, or the picture an image URL points to) in the chat. Data is data, and a link is a link. Data should be displayed, and links should remain links. If someone wants me to see a web page, they should make a screen grab to their local computer, and then send me the picture as an image. Otherwise they should send me a link, which then I can peruse at my own convenience (which usually includes first scrubbing the link of any identifying trailing garbage.)

If you want web links to work the way they are supposed to work on the Mac, then allow for a right-click with a QuickLook option, but display the link in it's full length with all the "garbage" that will be transmitted to the site when the link is clicked upon, no "user friendly URL" version, that makes a link look like it were a harmless, state-free static link, while in fact it's a 900 character long monster with encoded state and personal details. One might think that's part of the PRISM program...

Try unplugging your iPod and rebooting your PC. Then reset the iPod by toggling the hold switch on and off, then pressing and holding both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
Then start up iTunes and connect your iPod again.
If still no luck, what comes up on the iPod's LCD display when you connect it to a high powered USB 2.0 port on your PC?

File corruption on SDCard when multiple files are being written from WinCE 6.0R3

We currently have file corruption problems which we have been able to reproduce on our system which uses WinCE 6.0R3. We have an SDCard in our system which is mounted as the root FS. When multiple files are being written to the file system we occasionally
see file corruption with data destined from one file, ending up in another file, or in another location in the same file. We have already written test SW that we have been able to use to reproduce the problem, and have worked with the SDCard vendor to
check that the memory controller on the card is not the source of the problems.
We know that the data we send to WriteFile() is correct, and that the data which eventually gets sent through the SDCard driver to the SD card is already corrupted.
We believe that the problem is somewhere in the microsoft private sources between the high level filesystem API calls and the low level device calls that get the data onto the HW.
We have confirmed that the cards that get corrupted are all good and this is not a case ofpoor quality flash memory in the cards. The same cards that fail under WinCE 6.0R3 never fail under the same types of testing on Windows, Mac OX, or linux. We
can hammer the cards with single files writes over and over, but as soon as multiple threads are writing multiple files it is only a matter of time before a corruption occurs.
One of the big problems is that we are using the sqlcompact DB for storing some data and this DB uses a cache which get's flushed on it's own schedule. Often the DB gets corrupted because other files are being written when the DB decides to flush.
So we can reproduce the error (with enough time), and we know that data into the windows CE stack of code is good, but it comes out to the SDcard driver corrupted. We have tried to minimize writes to the file system, but so far we have not found a
way to make sure only one file can be written at once. Is there a setting or an API call that we can make to force the OS into only allowing one file write at a time, or a way of seeing how the multiple files are managed in the private sources?

All QFE's have been applied we are building the image so we have some control.
I have build an image which used the debug DLL's of the FATFS and I have enabled all of the DebugZones. The problem is still happening. From the timings in the debug logs and the timestamps in the data which corrupts the test file I have been able
to see that the file is corrupted AFTER the write is complete. Or at least that's how it seems.
We finished writing the file and closed the handle. Then more data is written to other files. When we get around to verifying the file it now contains data from the files that were subsequently written.
What I think I need to do is figure out in detail how the two files were "laid down" onto the SDCard. If the system used the same cluster to write the 2 files then that would explain the issue.

My CR2 files are being saved as PNG and not PSD

When I import files into Elements 12 Organizer, I want to use the Instant Fix Smart Fix option. The CR2 files are being exported to the PNG format, and I want them to be PSD files, I don't have a way to return to the options of how to save my files by using the Instant Fix button. I really would appreciate some help on this. I can't seem to get any tech support by navigating the Adobe Web site - I always land in the Forums.

In PSE12, whenever I want to use the smart fix option in the organizer for a raw file, I get a dialog with various format options and the possibility to check one of those formats by default. If I check the checkbox to always use that format and not to display the menu, I find myself in the same situation as yours.
I don't know of a way to get the menu back... Deleting the organizer preferences should help, unless other users have a better idea.

Found several folders empty. The files were found in the trash. All files are MS products. Is this a virus of some sort?

I recently found several of my folders were emtpy. Out of desperation I looked in the Trash, and found that all my files are somewhat systematically being moved to the trash. All the files are MS (I use Office for Mac), including Adobe. Has anyone experienced this? What's the "fix"?

One of the people who responded, thomas_r., is a virus expert and has an excellent website -- thesafemac.com -- all about Macs and viruses. He did not think a virus would cause this.
So I'd definitely recommend making a backup (or preferably two, since hard drives eventually fail), and you could upgrade to Mavericks (especially since Snow Leopard appears to be no longer supported by Apple) -- but based on Thomas's reply, I don't think a virus is causing this.

First and foremost, just say no to Beiber
First, close all open apps on your computer and restart your computer. Open only iTunes when it restarts.
Then, I would reset your iPod, probably not needed but I would do it any way. Hold the sleep/wake button and the volume down button until the Apple logo appears. Wait for it to completely start up to where it is ready to use.
Now try and restore. If the iPod was synced with your own computer to put the music on, you can use it to remove it. Usually that is preferred instead of restoring.

Portege 3440CT freezes after some time while the files are being copied

It seems I'm having the same problem as missred in this thread http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=19232 (on the bottom). Unfortunatelly I can't reply there that's why I'm writing here. My laptop version is 3440CT.
My try was to make a win98 bootable HD drive with i386 directory on it, boot from this disk and start the installation with winnt.exe. OK, it works but while the files are being copied after some time it just freezes. I tried it both with one partition and i386 on active system partition and with two partitions and i386 on a separate non-system partition. I don't have FDD or CD for the laptop.
Any ideas what is wrong? Is it possible to install XP on the same disk the XP installation is started from?

PS: My other tries were:
- complete XP installation on another computer and then switching the drive
- XP installation on another computer up to the point it first resets (after finishing of coping the installation files) and then switching the drive
both unsuccessful. I also changed the drive to another one as I suspected it's phisically damaged. Now I'm out of ideas ;)

It should work out this way, so........ is it really freezing or did you forget to include "smartdrive" ?
Be sure to include the file in the root-directory of your HD and put the right command in your autoexec.bat file

JNLP and jar files are being download from server again.

I have a swing application deployed with Java Web Start on a server.
On my client I install the application using JWS JRE 1.6.
The issue is that without any change in the jars or JNLP the jars are being downloaded from the server again and again
This is not consistant - it happens only sometimes.
One important thing to mention: The server is inside a load-balancer cluster (AKAMAI), so the IP address of the actual server may change between different accesses.
in the log, I can see the error:
"Cache entry not found"
and then the jar is being downloaded again.
sometimes only one or two jars were downloaded again, sometimes the whole package with the JNLP file were dowloaded again.
Can you suggest what can be the reason for this behavior?

That does seem slow, but there are many factors that could be involved. More information would be helpful:
- Are the source and destination filesystems ZFS or UFS? (or some other FS)
- What does iostat show you?
- What does vmstat show you?
- What type of HBAs connect you to the SAN? ('fcinfo hba-port')
- Anything in /var/adm/messages?
