Recovered jpg's thumbs great... open not so great.

I've just recovered a bunch of jpgs that were corrupted with MediaRecover app. The thumbnails of the recovered images are in general great, but when I open a lot of them they are all over the place.
Any clues?
Thanks,
Craig
iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

It's hard to say without examining one of the files. But if the originals had a resource fork based thumbnail it is possible that the thumbnail was not corrupted because the resource fork is OK, but the data fork got hosed so the file itself is hopelessly corrupted. The way to find out would be to strip the resource fork, then have Finder draw a thumb from the data fork. You might also try doing a GetInfo on the file and open the Preview section to see what that looks like. I'm not sure if the Finder does in fact draw a preview from the data fork when you do that, or whether for some unknown reason it just takes longer to display the resource fork thumbnail--I just know that it does take longer for a thumb to appear doing that than when a folder of images with resource fork based thumbs is in icon view. At any rate, the only way to find out for sure is to strip the resource fork. If you want to try this you can use GrimRipper:
http://free.abracode.com/cmworkshop/grim_ripper.html
Of course, all the test will tell you is whether or not the resource fork is good but the data fork is bad...

Hey Sierra, You can do just what you have stated. My question, what is your "other"? If it is over 1.5 GB you most likely have corrupt files. Doing a Restore to New, Factory restore should correct it. Just make sure you make a full backup of all information on your iPod to your computer before you restore, so you don't lose your stuff, contacts, videos, pictures, non-iTunes music, etc, use the cable and connect with your computer. Then, via cable, connect to your computer, run the Restore to new, don't use your backup. Treat this iPod as if it was your first one ever. When restore is done, set up and add what info you wish to install on this iPod. The music apps etc you purchased should be on your computer, if not you should be able to retrieve purchased apps and music from iTunes. Any music, videos, apps not purchased from iTunes will be lost to you if you do not save them to your computer or the cloud first. When your done, make a current Backup and you should good to go. Hope this helps. Good luck. Cheers.

Adobe Reader could not open 'images rest 12-4.jpg' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).
that is the message how do i correct this problem

It sounds like your file associations are messed up and Reader is trying to open your .jpg files. Is this correct?
If so, you just need to change the associations to choose what application opens them. Here's how: Change File Associations in Mac OS X

    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.iBooksX
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Quit the application if it's running. Move the selected item to the Trash. Relaunch the application and test.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select

  • How do I restore my passcode (not password) in my iphone5s. It's the one that is asked whenever you have to unlock the phone. I got used to having my thumb mark open it that I forgot it after my phone got recharged after it drained out.

how do I get my passcode (not password) in my iphone5s sent to me via email. It's the one that is asked whenever you have to unlock the phone. I got used to having my thumb mark open it that I forgot it after my phone got recharged after it drained out. Apparently, the fingerprint won't do after the phone was drained and recharged again. The passcode has to be typed in. I don't usually allow my phone to drain out except this one time on a long trip. Hence I forgot my passcode and I prefer it being sent to me via my registered email. I know that if you enter it several times, the phone gets locked out over certain periods from 1 minute to 60 minutes so I don't want to take that risk. Any suggestions?

First, this is a user-to-user technical support forum, not a way to communicate with Apple.
That aside, no one can email your passcode to you because no one (not even Apple) knows it. The passcode exists in only one place - on the phone. You will have to restore the phone using the computer that you regularly sync it to. This will reinstall iOS, remove the passcode, and restore your most recent backup.
    Edit:
See: iOS: Forgotten passcode or device disabled after entering wrong passcode for more details

  • Opened Notes and screen changed from listing my notes to no notes. How do I recover them?  TY

Opened Notes and screen changed from listing my notes to no notes. How do I recover the missing notes?

Would you please explain how you did this? Most of my Notes dissapeared after the latest update. I tried restoring them from TM, but nothing shows up and QuickLook only shows (null). I took them from the IMAPnote file under (eventually) CoreData (~Library/Containers...), but that is not working for me. My Notes are synced with iCloud, so my solution may be different from yours.
    Thank you.

Whenever I open a file in Lion, other files of the same sort that I opened previously automatically open up. For example, if I open a .jpg file, numerous other .jpg files that I opened previously in the day open up. How do I close these files to prevent them from showing up again, like in previous versions?

Dealing With The Resume Feature of Lion
Managing Mac OS X Lion's application resume feature.
If you shutdown your computer you should get a dialog asking if you want applications to resume on the next startup. Simply uncheck the box to prevent that from occurring. Open General preferences and uncheck the option to Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps. You can also install a third-party utility to control resume features on individual applications: RestoreMeNot or Application State Cleaner.
It is possible to completely stop the Resume feature although I'm unconvinced that it is that annoying. Nevertheless see the following:
If you have not yet done so you must first make your /Home/Library/ folder visible. Open the Terminal application in the Utilities folder. At the prompt paste the following command line:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
Press RETURN. Quit the Terminal application.
In the Finder navigate to the /Home/Library/Saved Application State/ folder. Delete the contents of the folder. Back up to the /Home/Library/ folder. Select the Saved Application State folder. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Sharing and Permissions panel at the bottom click on the lock icon and authenticate. Set each of the listed entries to Read Only. Close the Get Info window.
Quit all open programs except the Finder (this is very important.) Next, navigate to the /Home/Library/Preferences/ByHost/ folder. Look for a .plist file with "com.apple.loginwindow." in the file name followed by some numbers in hexadecimal. Select the file. Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window and in the Sharing and Permissions panel click on the lock icon and authenticate. Set each of the listed entries to Read Only. Close the Get Info window. If you also find a file with the same filename but with a last extension of ".lockfile," then you should delete it.
The above should eliminate the Resume feature system-wide. Note that any future system updates or upgrades will likely undo these changes. You will then need to repeat this procedure assuming there are no major changes in OS X related to it.

  • Since installing Tiger my images files are missing .jpg and won't open.

Upgraded to Tiger a month or so ago. Now when I open some images files there are two extra items in the folder. One marked FINDER.DAT and another folder marked RESOURCE.FRK in upper case. My images will not open because the .jpg has been removed. I can retype the .jpg and they will open, but we are talking over 4000 images here. What happened? G4 Quicksilver, OS 10.4.10, Photoshop Elements 3, Toast Titanium, Firefox, Seamonkey, Safari, etc.

Copy this script into Script Editor, compile it, and run it on the .DAT folder:

  • The file "aaa.jpg" couldn't be opened because you don't have permission to view it

The file “aaaa.jpg” couldn’t be opened because you don’t have permission to view it.
This message is coming up every time i try to look at a photo on my Mac .   This is new  ... does anyone know what has happened?

    Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -Rh $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
That's one word, all lower case, with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’renot going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

I'm so sorry that I forgot the Office programs even not open in safe mode and provide useless information in my last reply.
The problem persists when we perform a Windows clean boot, right?
Were the Office programs suddenly not working? Or it just can’t be open after you install it? Did you get any error message?
If you haven’t try a repair of your Office installation, we can try it to check the result:
