Recovering a saved over doc.

I accidentally saved over a document that I need. Can I access the older version of the document somehow?
I'm using Microsoft Word for Mac 2011 version 14.2.4.
Thanks!

  • Recover a Saved Over Pages File

I accidentally saved over a Pages file with another file of the same name. Is there any place in my machine where the original file is still present? Thanks in advance for any assistance. I'm running Pages 4.3 on a MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion.

So, the net for the OP is that unless the original document is backed up elsewhere, the overwritten content is gone for good.
Had the OP been using the Pages save a version feature, prior versions could be accessed by hovering the pointer over the document name. This would reveal a triangle and a menu entry offering to browse all versions of the document. The visual appearance for past versions is similar to the Time Machine Restore interface.
Perhaps, a sound future strategy would be a combination of routine backup and Pages versioning.
More information can be found by choosing the Pages Help menu and typing “version” into the search field.

  • How can i recover a word document if another file saved over it

A file was saved over an original by mistake.  How can I recover the original file?

Assuming your son is working on your OS X 10.6 iMac.
If Pages was setup to automatically create a backup of the file when saved, you should be able to look on the disk for that file name with "backup of" appended to the file name.  Otherwise, unless Word saves versions of a document (I'm not familiar enough with Word to know), so that an earlier version of the document is available, the original document is written over and gone.
Do you use Time Machine to backup your system? There may be a copy of the essay there from the hourly backups.

  • Recovering a file I accidentally saved over

I just designed a 16 page spread in Adobe Illustrator CS5, and then somehow saved over it with just the first page--15 pages of design lost. Please tell me there is a way to recover the file. I'm working on a Mac desktop. Thanks

Unless you save a copy somewhere else the only option is to try the Revert command from the File menu. This is assuming you haven't saved and closed the file. If you have, then all bets are off.

  • Recover file I accidentally saved over?

hi, I have a serious problem here... I saved a file as PSD ,then delet all the layers and was doing another stuff on the sheet( the reason I did this is because I wanted the same page size and was lazy to enter the size:| )after I finished, I saved the file to another name. but, I found that the first file that i saved manually , is replaced by an autosave file on my work procedure on the second file. I know this happend because I was working with the sama names, but is there any way that I can restore my first file that I saved to what I manually saved?:( I didnt know this whould happend... adobe shouldnt autosave on the manually saved files...:( pleaseeeeeeeeee help me, what can I do here?

Sorry to bring up an old thread but a Google search for this same problem kept bringing me here. Not sure if this is a new feature or not but I accidentally did the same thing. I opened up a file to use the layout, re-did a whole new ad and then in a hurry, two hours later I pushed the (command+s) button and to my dismay, saved over the entire original file. Then I opened up the history panel from the windows drop down and noticed at the top of the history panel there was a version of the file, as it was, when I opened it. So I saved the file as a different name, crossed my fingers and pushed the little button at the top of the history actions next to the thumbnail of the original file. And BAM! it restored the file back to it's original glory it was in, right when I opened it. Re-saved the original and was able to keep both files. Yay, win for me!

  • Problem involving saving over indesign file and pdf

Kind of a strange one this one....
I'm currently working on a magazine and have several InDesign files in one folder that i'm working on and a seperate folder where I have saved exported pdf versions of these files. The files are the same names in ach folder eg '1 - 40'  '2 - 39' and so on
I accidentally saved over one of my InDesign files so I understand I will not be able to recover it as I wasnt using any backup utility.
However before I saved over the file I had created a pdf version of it and saved it in my pdf folder.  So i'm thinking not all is lost as I can use the pdf file to send to the printers.
Now here's the strange bit - I am using PC and when I open explorer I can see the folder icon where all my pdf files are saved and can actually see the 'lost/saved over' pdf version as one of the mini thumbnails for that folder - but when I click on the folder to view the files inside it isnt there - instead it shows a thumbnail of the file i saved over it with...!?!
I'm thinking is there somekind of automatic updating PDF export setting that I may have selected or is it possible that folder icon is using a snapshot of what was inside at a certain point??
Either way I could really do with recovering this PDF - if anyone has any suggestions i'm more than happy to hear them.
    Thanks
    Mark

i thought this would help a little
This is the folder icon - in which all my pdf's are.  The top left thumbnail is the 'missing/saved over' pdf.  So you'd think it would be in there?
Below is a view of the contents of that folder - (for those of you with good eyesight) you can see that the top left thumbnail from the above picture is nowhere to be seen in this folder!!

  • Can you restore a file you have saved over

I have saved over a >rtf file using the same name. can i restore the first file?

And in light of Klaus1's and CT's advice there are data recovery services and programs that MAY and I repeat MAY be able to recover this file.
A lot depends on the exact way you overwrote it and how much free space is on your disk. One program Disk Drill (also in the App Store I beleive) has been helpful in the past. There is a free version that you might find useful to dowload and run to see if there is any possiblity for recovering the file.
But as its been said its a long shot.
    good luck

  • Saved Over a Document, PLEASE HELP!

I accidentally saved over an important document. Is there any way to go back to a previous version of the document? I have a MacBook Pro from 2009, iOS X 10.6.8 and am using the program Pages.

If it’s in a backup, restore it from there. If not, try using a data recovery product such as the ones listed here. Don't write anything else to the drive until the file is recovered or you choose not to recover it.

  • Pages document saved as doc not readable by word

    Hi all,
Lately I'm having trouble exporting my Pages documents to Microsoft Word format. I've tried the "Export" option directly available in the File menu, as well as the "Save as a copy" option in the Save dialog box. De document is correctly saved as .doc file and Pages can open, read and modify it, but I'm unable to open the exported document in Microsoft Word on my Windows PC. LibreOffice on my Linux PC does open the file, but doesn't show any of the content. Only some strange symbols are shown.
I'm running Mac OSX Mountain Lion with Pages downloaded from the App Store, so everything is up to date.
Does anyone have the same problem or know how to solve it?
    Thanks in advance!

Since it's obviously not a Pages plist issue, I think more drastic measures are called for.
The simplest would be to run the Mountain Lion 10.8.3 combo updater. In systems past, running the combo updater, even if it had been used before, can clear up some system odditites. It may work, but I think the problem is with Pages. Again, the simplest approach would be to delete Pages & reinstall it and run Software Update. I know you should get the most recent version from the Mac App Store, but this has helped others in the past.  The files to delete are the iWork ’09 folder from the main HD > Applications; the iWork ’09 folder in HD > Library > Application Support & the individual iWork application plist files found in HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences for each user. The easist way to delete iWork '09 is to use Yvan Koenig's AppleScript that removes the files. You can find it on his box.com account in for_iWork'09 > other_iWork'09 items > uninstall iWork '09.zip.

It looks like you haven't got them on iCloud. On your Mac, open Pages and drag the Word documents to the iCloud window

    Hi there morinallen,
Try downloading and running the print and scan doctor located here to ensure there are no software conflicts:

  • Photoshop CC OSX 10.9 - saving over network

Hi, I've done a couple of searches for this problem but havent found any similair situations.
I am having a problem with files which are 'dissapearing' when canceling a file from saving. For example - I am working on a large file and press 'save and close' but realise I don't need to save as the only change I have made since the previous save is something like turning a layer visibility on/off, so I press cancel. Then what I would of done is just close without saving, as I havent made any changes. However now the file has dissapeared.
    System info:
    Mac os X 10.9
Photoshop CC - latest update ( as of 19_3_14)
Saving to - HDD on a duplicate system over ethernet network.
I few tests I have done are-
Saving to desktop/internal HDD of workstation - File doesn't dissapear when cancelling a save.
Another computer in the same network on OS X 10.8 (PS CC) - File doesn't dissapear when cancelling a save.
(This makes me think it is a Photoshop CC/Mavericks issue.)
I've read that adobe does not support saving over a network, but I thought I would ask if anyone else has had/resolved this issue.
We have multiple workstations working in the same network folders, so saving files to desktop then copying over isn't a time effective option unfortunately.

Photoshop CC (internal version 14.2.1) does have a number of fixes that are better than Photoshop CS6 in regard to network saving.  Be sure to choose Help -> Updates to get the latest version of Photoshop CC. If you are on Mac OS X, please be sure to at least be running 10.8.5 as there were also network save fixes at the OS level that will help customers.

  • Saving over an image on an ios device

How would I load a photo from the camera roll, apply a change to the photo, and save over the photo that I just loaded? I was able to figure out how to load photos and save them to the camera roll but the photo would come out as a new photo rather than saving over the photo that was loaded.

Does that happen with every image or only on specific websites?
If only on specific websites then please post a link then we can check it.

  • InCopy workflow in InDesign: Is there a way to find the document in which an ICML file has NOT been checked IN again before saving the doc?

    The situation:
We are working with the InCopy feature (checking in and checking out ICML files).
    The problem:
I might have saved a document with an ICML file still checked out.
    The question:
Is there a way to find out which document was saved with the ICML file still checked out?
    or in other words:
Is there a way to find the document in which an ICML file has NOT been checked IN again before saving the doc?
    Thanks for any help!

    Hello Sumit Singh,
thank you for your answer and your reasonable recommendation. Unfortunately, this only works when the ICML content is used in one INDD file. In our case, we use ICML content in multiple docs (various manuals with the same safety instructions, warranties, adresses etc.).
So, is there a way to trace back where an ICML has been used?
Is it possible to find out in which document the ICML is still checked out?
