Recovering all the lost photos after iPhoto 11 destroyed my iLife!!!!!

So here I am trying to import 10,000 photos back onto my overcrowded harddrive on a macbook because iPhoto doesn't like external drives.   I am so ****** at Apple for dumping this piece of crap on us all.  I tried to save space by moving iPhoto library onto an external drive (yes, TD, it was Mac Extended Journal, but no it was not a hard drive stuck into my macbook, it was a perfectly legitimate GoFlex Max drive on etherneted to my home network.  For crissake it works for Time Machine, why not iPhoto.
The clearest thing I can figure out is the the team that dumped this crap on the market were the interns while everyone else was working on iCloud.  Well, guess what, folks, if you can't figure how to share static photographs over a home network, why would you ever think I would trust my photos on the iCloud.
Thanks.  I'm just hoping that between Time Machine and a little luck and can recover nearly a decade of photographs.

Terence, my question is how do I recover a decade's worth of photographs accumulated through several generations of iPhoto that have now been corrupted by iPhoto 11.  I have had numerous problems with iPhoto 11 since upgrading with the latest iLife package.  My Macbook runs on 10.6.8, and has a 250GB HD.  My first problems were encountered after upgrading were phantom events with grey boxes where about two dozen photos from about 2000 once were.  After struggling to find out why the thumbnails disappeared, and several attempts to rebuild the library, I gave up.  Since 10,000 photos was taking up a chunk of my harddrive, I next decided that moving it to an external drive might solve space problems, so I followed instructions on moving an iPhoto Library to an external drive.  In this case, I used a GoFlexHome NAS (Mac formatted) which is ethernet connected to a Verizon FiOS router and used a wireless connection to move it from the Macbook to the GoFlex.  It took an overnight move, but it worked for several weeks.  I could work with photos.  After the last iPhoto update, I encountered several more mysterious problems.  I imported 22 jpeg photos from a small Nikon Coolpix and they would show up in Photos and Last Import, but not in my Events.  This evening I realized that the last update of iPhoto rearranged Events to "Manual" rather than "by date," so in fact, the Events were there.  After reading cautions in the past few days that the external drive could not be a network drive and had to be hardwired to the macbook, I am now attempting to get the photos back on my crowded black Macbook, where I hope to regain uncorrupted access to my photos.  My problem is that there are so many photos, it now says I don't have enough room on my macbook:  86GB of data in the iPhoto Library on the GoFlex, and only 79 GB on my macbook.
I am a disappointed that this last version of iPhoto has had so many problems, hence more of a rant than a question.  Any advise you or others could offer would be welcome.

  • Lost photos after iPhoto library rebuild - what happened?

After noticing that there were albums entitled Recovered photos in my iPhoto library, I deleted those albums. As expected, i got a message that i was not really deleting the originals, just getting rid of such albums. There were about 5 of those "recovered albums": one contained about 30 photos; three had zero and another had over 1000 photos. Subsequent to that, thinking of making this library totally clean, I decided to do a "libraty rebuild" using the option-command rebuild procedure of iphoto. I checked all the options presented for that procedure. To my surprise, when the process was finished I had less events, and less photos. A careful visual check of the display pane of events and photos confirmed that i had lost actual photos. I tried to reclaim those lost photos with another rebuild -- this time using iphoto library manager, but without success. What happened? Is there any way to reclaim those lost photos?
I do have a backup, but would prefer to correct the problem in the original library to avoid having to assemble and clean up duplicates that i had before.
I'm using the newest version of iPhoto: 8.1 and OS X 10.5.8 on a MacBook 2.4 Ghz - 2Gb Ram - 250 GB HD, 42 GB available. My iPhoto library has over 12000 photos

Why these things happen is always difficult to answer. My experience with iPhoto is using it since v1 on with a single library that's upgraded each new versions and migrated from G4 iMac to G5 iMac to Intel iMac and then a second Intel iMac. I load photos in, my wife does and my 12 year old does too.
    And never had a problem.
The database gets corrupted when the app is interrupted when writing to it. The usual causes of this include a crash, a force quit or a lost connection to the Library on an external disk. More rarely minor disk or directory damage might be a cause.
I wondered when I read your report
Subsequent to that, thinking of making this library totally clean, I decided to do a "libraty rebuild" using the option-command rebuild procedure of iphoto. I checked all the options presented for that procedure.
The options presented for that procedure include various items that require the app to read the database file plus this one
Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
+I Wonder+ - I stress, I wonder, no more - if reading to rebuild various thumbnails from a file that is being vacuumed +while at the same time+ is being replaced by a backup is what caused the issue.
If it is, then the Rebuild from Back Up option should be sandboxed and not possible while the other events are going on.
    But that's just a guess.

  • Lost photos after iPhoto '06 upgrade

    Hello.
I recently installed iLife '06 and thought I'd try out the new calendar feature. After using it for about 20 minutes, iPhoto bombed.
I restarted and found the calendar I was working on was gone. No big deal. But then I noticed that my last 12 months folder was completely empty and my library was missing an enormous amount of photos. I have been able to recover some from "My Pictures" but not all.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    Lisa

    Lee,
Keep the duplicate library o the desktop.
Drag the messed up library to the trash.
    follow the next instructions;
Hold down the Option key and launch iPhoto
This is the window you will get
Create a new library or choose a library to open
Choose to create a new library
Once this new empty library is open it is time to import the images from your old library
-double click the iPhoto Library folder on the desktop to open it
-the two main folders you will need to import are the Original folder and the Modified folder (only if you want to import the edited images).
-the Originals folder has all your originals photos unedited. the Modified folder has all images that you have edited, rotated, cropped, etc.
-Drag these two folders to the desktop
-If you want to save the edited image, find it in the roll in the Modified folder and drag it into the roll of the same name in the Originals folder. It will replace the originals and now will be the original.
-If you don't care to save any edited images, then don't import the Modified folder into iPhoto or don't bother replacing the edited image with the original image like I just described.
-If you import the Originals folder into iPhoto you will have all your originals in their named rolls.
-If you import the Originals and Modified folders into iPhoto, you will have all of the edited and originals imported. The roll with the same name as the other will have a _1 appended to it's name (in the finder)
-the roll from the originals will be next to the same roll from the Modified folder within iPhoto. You can then delete any of the images from there if you want.
I know this might sound confusing but it really isn't.
Get back if any of this sounds like something you might want to do.

  • I lost my iphone5 5months ago...now i foundit again but all its photos are delted...i want to recover all my lost photos....need help...please

I lost my iphone 5 couple of months ago...now i found it again but all the photos and vidoes are deleted and were not linked to i cloud.....can any body help how can i recover all my photos and vidoes which are deleted from my device.

Before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
    - Did it ever work properly?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. With information, s/he may be able to get your issue resolved sooner.

  • How to get back all lost photos after updating the iOS8?

When I updated my IOS8 I thought I lost my photos, so I have restored my iPhone but after restoring I have discovered that I lost all my photos, please advise how can get/ retrieve all the lost photos specially since I didn't do backup?

If you backed up to iCloud, you might be able to choose from more than one backup. Each backup made in iTunes on your computer usually replaces the older one, except if you use a backup to restore from. Go to iTunes/Edit/Preferences/Devices and check if there are more backups listed, which you can then use to restore.
    Check these articles about backups:
Create and delete iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch backups in iTunes
Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes

  • How do i transfer a compilation photo file from iPhoto consisting of canon(img) and lumix(p..) in the order i compiled them to a usb stick as at the moment it is putting all the lumix files after the canon files?

    I have a macbook pro 15 inch retina 16 gb 1600mhz 2.7intel i7 osx 10.8.5
I have just put together an iPhoto file of wedding photos consisting of a compilation of images from my canon(img files) and lumix(p..files) I want to know how to transfer them to a usb stick in the order i compiled them as at the moment it is putting all the lumix files after the canon files which is not how i want to present them to the newlyweds?

Files are ordered by the file-viewer being used.  What viewer are you using, and what data field are you sorting by?
In Finder, as in most applications, you can select the data field to sort by clicking a column header.  Clicking the selected header will reverse the sort.
This is the Aperture forum, but what applies to Aperture is likely also true for iPhoto:  if you want to be able to sort your files in a specific order in a file-viewer, you should give them names that allow for sorting in that order when the name field is selected as the data field to sort by.  In Aperture, one creates new files by exporting, and one uses a File Naming Preset to name the files.  The File Naming Preset can start with an ordinal count or a sequence number.  Either of which will allow you to retain your order when viewing your files in a file viewer.

Are you saying you were trying to backup your phone but instead it restored your phone from a backup that was two years ago
If so there is no way to recover the recent data that was lost because it wasn't back up.
did you at the very least import your pics to your computer as you would a digital camera?

You could try rebuilding the database ...
Launch iPhoto while holding down the Command + Option keys.
The Photo Library First Aid window should open.
    Select:  Repair Database
    Click:  Repair
If that doesn't help, open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file to the Trash.
    Quit and relaunch iPhoto.
If that doesn't help, copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
    Quit and relaunch iPhoto.
If you do not currently have a wawy to backup your iPhoto library, you need to do that so that you can recover your photos in the event of a hard drive problem.

  • I duplicated a picture and now iPhoto (11) is cloning that picture replacing all the other photos and only when I click directly on them I can see the real picture! How can I solve the problem without losing any saved picture? Shall I re-install? Thanx

I duplicated a picture selecting CMD and D but, suddenly, iPhoto (latest version '11) started cloning that picture and replacing all the other photos with it.
Only when I click directly on one photo I can open it and see the real picture it is.
But the preview is always the duplicated one...
I tryed to duplicate another picture just to see if it turned out ok but the only changement was the duplicated picture!
I started repeating the second duplicated one instead of the previous one but my issue remained the same.
So, how can you help me to solve this problem without losing any saved picture?
    Shall I re-install iPhoto completely?
Thank you very very much in advance!!

As Larry says, restoring the back up is the fastest and best solution. Otherwise:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

Open Time Machine to the date that you know the iPhoto Library is in the format you want and select and Restore it.

  • So here's my problem. I just used the "reset all settings" option, and accidentaly restored an old backup. It deleted all my photos and contacts, but for some reason I still have all the apps from after the backup date, is there a way to get it all back?

So here's my problem. I just used the "reset all settings" option, and accidentaly restored an old backup. It deleted all my photos and contacts, but for some reason I still have all the apps from after the backup date, and it also kept the notes from after the backup. The "reset all settings" option clearly says no loss of data or media, so I don't understand why some stuff got deleted. My question is, is there a way to get it back?

If you still can find a recent backup listed in iTunes/Edit/Preferences/Devices, use this one to restore from.
If there are no recent backups listed, your data is gone. Only if you included the iTunes backup folder into your computer backup routine, you could be able to restore this folder and find one of your latest backups listed again.

How do I recover all the pictures from the iPhoto version immediately before 9.4.1?  I have a full system backup version from about one month before the switch , and mistakenly thought the new iPhoto would default to all my pictues as they were.  I also have backups made in Time Machine.

Have you tried what's shown here?  I suspect this will solve your issue.

When I upload photos from iphoto or any other folder it overwrites all the existing photos in my ipad. is there a way to add to the existing library without deleting what's already in the library?

No, apart from using the emailing them, to yourself or using a third-party app such as Simple Transfer (in which case the photos will only go into the Saved Photos/Camera Roll album) or the camera connection kit (Imported album). You need to sync all the photos that you want on the iPad in one go, as only the contents of the most recent sync remains on the iPad - not including photos in a sync is how you delete them from the iPad
