Recovering an application from time machine

Hi
I inadvertantly deleted an apllication. I have kept my time machines backups up-to-date. How do I recover the application?

Open Time Machine from the dock on your Mac and wait a few minutes for the Time Machine "Star Wars" interface to load
Using the scale at the far right of the screen, locate a date when the application was still on your Mac
Click on the date and Time Machine will display it at the bottom of the window to confirm
Click on Applications on the left side of the Finder window
Locate the application that you want and click on it to highlight it
Click Restore at the lower right of the window

  • Recovering mail folder from TIME MACHINE

I've recovered a folder from Time Machine, but I can't seem to get it to go into my mail program.
I've just looked inside the folder, though, and some of the messages seem to be blank.
I have created a new folder and have tried to migrate over just ten of these messages. It won't even do that. I've started over again by deleting the folder and re-creating a new one. And I've restarted my computer. There's something really wrong here.
It may also have to do with a .mac synch. I get a flashed message that says "outgoing 3974 message" (which is how many I have, or thereabouts). But it doesn't process anything, just says that and goes away.
    Any ideas here???

I've just looked into my library / preferences folder, and there does not appear to be a plist for Mail there. Isn't that odd? Where should that plist be located, and what would it mean if none is appearing? I've never heard of that one, is there a fix for such a problem (if it is the source of my problem?).

  • How can I restore just one application from Time Machine?

Hello, I have just one application that is really acting quirky and won't load correctly anymore and I would like to restore that application from Time Machine but am just not sure how to do that. Can someone please walk me through step by step on how to restore just one application. Thank you. Jean

Before you restore an application from a Time Machine backup it would be wiser to remove the current installed copy then reinstall from the application's original distribution medium - download, CD/DVD, etc. The reason for this is that Time Machine backs up every hour. By now the bad version of this application is now backed up to your Time Machine backup drive. Restoring from the backup won't resolve your problem.
First, uninstall the old program. If the program came with an uninstaller then use it. If not then start by deleting the application from the Applications folder. Then locate all the support files associated with the application and remove them, too. Look for these in:
    /Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences
    /Users/yourusername/Library/Applications Support
Applications may come with a separate uninstaller program that could also be in your Applications folder. Some applications may install other files in other locations on your computer. If you tell us what the application is we may be able to provide additional help.
You may find more information here: The XLab FAQs. Read the FAQ on uninstalling software.

  • Restore some application from time machine problem.

    Hi Everybody,
I just restored my MBP from Time Machine, everything went fine. But I feel my MBR start up much slower than before. So now I want to do a clean install Leopard.
I would like to ask you guys who experiences in Time Machine that after installing Leopard, I want to restore some applications from Time Machine such as MS office, Wow, Photoshop...Will they fully function if I restore from TM?
I acknowledge that some applications are like packages so after installing in Mac OS, they are actually located in different places in the system. Whereas others is like small application so we just copy and use. So if big applications as packages, I can not just copy from TM and put it in my new Leopard to use, can't I? If I can't, so is there any ways I can copy it back and use?
I am so confusing about this and I hope very much that somebody could help me out this problem, I would greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

Wait on the erase and install. Launch Disk Utility which is in the Applications > Utilities folder and Verify your disk and repair permissions. If Verify shows any errors boot from the Leopard install DVD by holding the "c" key down until the spinning gear appears. Pick a language and choose Utilities > Disk and run Repair until no errors appear. Repair permissions.
If that doesn't work try resetting the PRAM which quite often fixes slow boot times.

I don't know about Wow but Photoshop and MS Office install too many files in too many places for it to be practical to restore them from Time Machine backups after doing an erase and install. You need to reinstall those from the original disks for those applications.

  • Restoring applications from time machine after a clean install of Mavericks.

I had recently upgraded from Mt. Lion to Mavericks from app store. But after few months I thought it was being buggy and slow. Last week after taking a complete time-machine backup I formatted the computer and clean installed Mavericks again. Now I am trying to restore just few handpicked applications one by one. Most of the apps are either not working or asking me for keys. Is there any other way to restore apps from Time Machine? Because all I see is that it just copy pastes the folder from the backup, and does not restore the prefe

If I were you, I would not restore your applications from the backup, more if you want the preferences back. Performance issues will be back and you may need to reformat the hard drive again.
Instead, the best thing you can do is to reinstall your applications manually, so you will not be transferrind files you do not need

  • OS 10.5.8 Leopard. Recovering old data from Time Machine after HD replacement.

Okay, I have and iMac dual core Model A1224, EMC 2210, 20" screen, 2.66GHz processor, 2GB RAM, came, when I bought it, with a 500 GB drive circa late 2008. The drive started to fail about 2 weeks ago, random shut downs, wouldn't boot up, couldn't find the OS. Could sometime recover booting up from the original OS disk in the C drive, but eventually even that failed. Had run disk first aid and TechTool Pro6 to no avail, they all passed the drive so it was a mechanical failure, not bad sectors.
REPLACED the drive with a brand new Seagate Barracuda 1TB drive, figured I was all set, Time Machine had backed up the old drive every day since 2009 to an external 1TB drive. I could even see the data there. Now new drive is installed and I need to load the OS to it and retrieve my data from Time Machine. Put in the old disk, Leopard 10.5.1, and walked along and asked it to bring in the data from Time Machine.... except, the data is saved on Time Machine in a new version of Leopard, ver. 10.5.8 and so the 10.5.1 version can't import it, but of course Migration Assistant will allow you to import it later.
So, I continue to load the OS via the disk, then go to software update after creating a new computer name, which I didn't want to do. Updated the software so I am now running OS 10.5.8, open Migration Assistant and attempt to migrate / recover the old data from Time Machine. I can get some stuff, but it insists on my resetting everything up all over again, all new accounts in Quicken and Thunderbird and Microsoft Office, no recovery of data already there and I can't access the accounts that were set up by others, it indicates I don't have sufficient privileges though I was an Administrator on the old computer and on the current system as well.
Frankly, I need that old data, so how do I get it? Do I bite the bullet and upgrade the system to Snow Leopard OS10.6.XX, will that allow me access to old data under OS 10.5.8? Will it be backwards compatible? How about moving up to Lion? Would that be a better way to go and will I be able to recover that old data then?
VERY frustrated here! Thanks for help or direction you all can provide.

  • How do I restore applications from Time Machine after installing Mavericks?

I have a 2010 13" MBP and it was running slow, so I used internet recovery to install Mavericks. I had hoped to reinstall all my applications such as Office, iWork etc from my Time Machine backups but it won't let me. I wonder if since I erased my old HD it doesn't recognize the backups from Time Machine. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

  • If I restore applications from Time Machine will serials be lost?

As title - if I click on the application and time machine restores to a new install will it also take with it the serial or will I have to keep a record of all of them to re-register my software?

orangekay is right, but as a side note, I would strongly recommend keeping a record of all your serial numbers, no matter what. There are plenty of software options, some free, for doing this.

  • Recovering old addresses from time-machine

I gave my old iPhone to my mom, who then updated her contact list with her names/numbers. I then I wanted to help her do something unrelated, so I plugged the phone back into my Mac, which caused iTune to sync... it then erased all my contact info (yes, it prompted the overwrite, but my mom said "allow").
So, the question is, how do I recover the old names/addresses from my time-machine backup? Where are those names/addresses held?

I think you're not actually going into the Time Machine interface; you're looking directly in the drive in the Finder. The Time Machine interface - where you recover files - shows an animation of stars travelling across the screen. You get there by launching the Time Machine program which should stay in your Dock, so if it's not already there, drag it from the Applications folder first.
So, to recap. Launch Address Book. Click the Time Machine icon in the Dock. You should see the Address Book window float into the middle of the screen, in a starscape. On the right is the time slider - slide back to the last correct date, and you'll see the Address Book contents change to reflect it. When you find the correct set of addresses, click Restore All at the bottom of the screen to restore those past addresses to your current book.

  • Restoring Application from Time Machine

Yesterday, I downloaded XCode 4.1 from the Mac App Store. Shortly after using the installer to install XCode 4, I decided to delete the installer. I now regret this and I find that it may be useful to keep a copy of the installer around. Since Lion has the new "local snapshots" feature or something, I decided to enter Time Machine (even though I hadn't connected my drive since the installation) and sure enough a local snapshot had Install XCode.app inside. However, when trying to restore this item, I keep getting the error message:
The same message occurs when I try to add it to any other location. What is going on? I know I can download the application again but it is a really large file and I don't want to download (and wait for it to download for that matter–it took over an hour to download) another 3 GB again after downloading XCode and Lion in the same month.

    That's very strange.
You may have to download it again.

  • How can I reinstall Garageband application from Time Machine

I somehow LOST my GarageBand application. I can see it on my Time Machine but I don't know how to restore JUST that application. I still have my garage band files.

Which version of mac os x does your new mac have?
Actually photoshop elements 6 should work on modern intel macs.
The only problem is that adobe doesn't have photoshop elements 6 installers available anymore, though there may be a chance to get the pse 6 installer if you bought pse 6 as a download from adobe
and login to your adobe account using the same user id and password as you did back then.
Otherwise hopefully you have the photoshop elements 6 install dvd.
Photoshop elements 13 is the current version that adobe has for sale

  • How do I recover deleted notes from Time Machine?

Ok, I was away on a business trip for 3 weeks.  While in the hotel, I was looking at my notes on my iPhone (I use iCloud with notes on an iPad, iPhone and Mac Mini running OSX Mavericks and time machine backups).  I noticed iCloud had duplicated a couple of notes.  I deleted the duplicate of each.  Then the next time I went to check, any trace of those notes were gone.
I'm looking to figure out how to restore them  with Mavericks. With Mountain Lion, it was fairly easy to go in to the mail folder in time machine, but now that notes are seperate from Mail, I'm having trouble figuring this out.
      Thanks

  • HT201250 Can I recover the backups from Time Machine, but the backups is deleted by the Time Machine!

Unfortunately, the Time Macchine deleted my oldest backups in my hard drive.
I have the important files in the backups.
So hope someone could help me to recover the backups.

Time Machine will remove old backups automatically. It tells you when it does, but of course by then it's too late.
There is no recovering deleted backups, since it was necessary to overwrite them with newer backups.
For further explanation read the following entries from Apple Support Communities contributor Pondini's Time Machine FAQ:
    12. Should I delete old backups?  If so, How?
    20. Once my Mac is backed-up, can I delete some stuff to save space?
Time Machine is for backups. It is not an archiving utility. To archive files requires something like one of these:
    Carbon Copy Cloner ($39.95) http://sites.fastspring.com/bombich/product/ccc
    or
    SuperDuper! ($27.95) http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
