Recovering corrupt dmg file

I made an image (dmg file) of my computer as a backup and now I need to recover that file. When I try to open it I get "no mountable file systems". Is there a utility that will let me open this file so I can access the data?

Hello! You're unlikely to recover a bad disk image. About the only thing to try is to open disk utility and drag the icon to the upper left pane when your hard drives are listed and see if you can run a "repair disk" function on it. Did you create the image of the disk using disk utility with the intent of restoring a drive? Tom

  • Anyone know how to repair a corrupted .DMG file? I recovered the file using Disk Drill. There are actually 4-6 files I have encrypted into a DMG - now they are back on my desktop (deleted them months ago) and the size is correct (between 500-900 MB each)

I deleted several .mov files a while back that were encrypted into a .dmg file. Using Disk Drill, I was able to recover 5 of these files, roughly 500-900 MB each and successfully moved them to my desktop. When I try to open the .dmg file, the dreaded error message "no mountable file systems" shows up. I have tried various fixes based on searches and none have worked. Are these files just corrupted and unreadable, or is there a way to fix?

Thanks for the obvious question. I mean it. The very same thought came to me this morning and, sure enough, I had booted into another drive--my old one that, of course, had the old desktop, etc.
It didn't dawn on me that this was the case since I hadn't set it as a boot drive but I guess in the course of all the restarts I did, it got switched.
    I'm back to normal again.

  • Is there a way to recover corrupted psd. files?

I recently transferred all my work from a work computer to my mac at home. i am unable to access my work computer until October as we are having a 'break'. However, I have a deadline for September 15th and I need all my files.
Some older files open perfectly fine but I fear there was a problem in downloading-perhaps due to my haste to leave and enjoy the beautiful weather!
I tried downloading a Remo Repair software but unfortunately this was unable to launch. Is there program out there that you would recommend in this instance for me to recover my psd files-which are of great importance!
    Any help would be appreciated
    Basic notes:
    Created on Windows computer cs5
Trying to open on Mac cs5
Sd card used to transfer-couldn't eject, this may be the problem

It is most difficult to recover a corrupted file.  Many have tried but almost all end up in failure.  Try opening in another program.  IF you can then "save as" and you can probably open in PS.
Do you have a backup?  Do you still have original files on Win computer?  These are your best bets.  It is too late for these files, but I think you can see the necessity of having a backup on a separate HD or even on a disk.

  • DESPERATE: need to recover corrupted Word file

    Hi Everyone,
I hope someone out there can help me recover a corrupted Word file. My Macbook froze while I working on an important document. I was forced to restart it but when I tried to reopen the file I had been working on, I got a message that "The file is corrupt and cannot be opened" I have surfed the web for solutions and some suggested opening and repairing the file under PC versions of Word. I've done that, but when the file opens, the entire document is filled with weird symbols and characters. Please tell that I haven't lost everything
Thanks for any leads for solving this or on any recovery softwares that might provide some partial recovery of the data.

Well it's hard to say if recovery of your file is possible, but you can check if you have selected the Save AutoRecover information every x minutes check box in your MS Office settings.
If yes just check AutoRecover file location box in MS Office settings.
If not and you don't have backup, your file is lost i think.

  • How to recover corrupt passwd file for c6000+x6270?

    i met a problem.
passwd file corrupts and nobody can login.
hardware platform is c6000+x6270 blade, os disks have mirrorred.
in this environment, how to recover the passwd file(we have one copy)?
    Thanks

The procedure can differ depending which volume manager software you use, it this is the case. But basically, you should boot with an external media, like DVD or jumpstart server, mount the root partition and fix the /etc/passwd file, umount the partition and finally reboot.

  • Corrupt dmg files

I'm having an issue that seems to come up before with others. Every DMG file I have tried downloading is corrupt and is giving me invalid checksum etc..
This isn't limited to one specific machine as I have an iMac and 2 macbooks all try and make the same download on the same network and all 3 are getting the same issues. i've rebooted the modem / router and nothing!
This is really frustrating as I can't get photoshop to work without installing java and even that 60meg download is getting corrupt.
Routerwise i have a netgear WGR614v9 (seems like a piece of crap) and can't get the firmware to update.
This is really frustrating as i need to work from home but can't even install the software i need to use.
    Anyone figure out anything?

Add me to the list.  Running Mountain Lion on my MBP and Lion on my Mac Mini. The MBP is connecting to the Internet via wireless and the mac mini is wired. Tried rebooting the cable modem and switch to see if that made a difference but it didn't. I cannot understand why unless there's been an update to lion which prevents dmg files from opening a.k.a. The bzip issue that affected osx 10.3 and earlier.
All other file types are fine, it just seems to be affecting dmg files. Also, if it was corruption over the wire then surely web sites wouldn't load properly.
    Confused!

  • Corrupt DMG file - "No Mountable File Systems"

Hello, I have an important backup DMG file that I can't mount. When I try, I get this error..."No Mountable File Systems".
I have tried the following with no success...
    - repairing the DMG in Disk Utility.
    - converting the DMG in Disk Utility to a R/W image.
    - Repair in Data Rescue 3
    - Repair in Disk Warrior
    - Repair in File Salvage (this actually recovered a single mp3 file, so this makes me think the data is still there)
    - Repair in Stellar Phoenix
    - Repair in Disk Drill
I have read on one of these forums (I can't seem to find it anymore) that someone had a similar issue and someone helped them through a lot of digging around in the broken file (something to do with headers?)...and in the end they managed to repair the broken DMG file. I would really like to repair this file, so just in case someone who knows how to fix this sort of thing, I've shared the file here...
    files.me.com/jeffvandyck/x4qv9c
I have a few other files like this and would really like to recover those as well. I'm relatively technical, and once I understand what I'm looking for I can try to fix the others.
Thanks in advance for any help!
    Cheers,
    Jeff

  • Did a backup & erased hard disk - Now need to recover the .dmg file? How?

Hi there.... thanks for your help!
I used Carbon Copy Cloner (found on versiontracker.com) to make a complete .dmg backup of an entire Powerbook G4. I copied the 28GB .dmg file via ethernet to my Time Capsule and that worked just fine.
I did a 7-pass secure erase on a the PB and have booted up from Tiger OS discs, but cannot find a way to access the Time Capsule to restore the machine.
    How do I do this??
    Thanks again!
    DL

I think I figured it out!
I restarted the Powerbook with a Firewire 400 cable attached, I realized that I could select "T" on the keyboard and make it a target drive. I mounted it on my machine, which is connected via ethernet to my Time Capsule (Aiport is much too slow...). From my computer, I went to Disc Utility and restored the .dmg file from the Time Capsule to the connected Powerbook.
    It seems to be working....

  • How to recover corrupt dmg partition

Somehow I have corrupted a dmg partition in trying to increase the space of the partition. When clicking on the partition in Finder it asks for password but then says "no mountable file systems". Any clues on recovery? Mac Book Pro OSX 10.7.5

    Hi..
I too had faced the same problem and used this partition recovery software to recover my deleted partition. This is the
best partition recovery software. You can also
download and check the recovery results.

    To trout00 -
Typically if an action taken inside an application causes a computer reset, this suggests that the OS is hitting some sort of kernel level exception. The OS is not giving you a blue screen but instead it is set to auto reset.
Right click on the My Computer icon on your desktop and select Properties. On the System Properties dialog box, take a look at the Startup and Recovery settings located on the Advanced tab.
I suspect that some sort of event log will be registered in this case.
Kernel level exceptions typically occur when hardware drivers or low level services error or have a bug. In the case of the sequence editor, none of its code is low level, so any error the program causes would just cause the applicati
on to shutdown, not the OS.
With this in mind, it suggests that you might have a hardware problem with the computer system.
See if the event log gives you any additional information.

  • How to recover corrupt USB files?

my USB flash drive stopped working today, when i try to verify it on disk utility, i get this message:
    ** /dev/disk1s1
can't open (no such file or directory)
error: filesystem verify or repair failed
i tried disk drill, wondershare, and stellar phoenix and none of them recognize my flash drive.
any advice on how to recover my files?

Here are the simple steps to repair data file in QuickBooks.
Step 1: Close the software as soon as you receive damaged data file error message.
Step 2: Now open the software. It will make a new Qbwin.log file.
Step 3: Click on the ‘Window’ option and then from the drop-down menu, click on ‘Close All’. Now go the ‘File’ option then from the drop-down menu, click on ‘Utilities’. A menu will appear.
Step 4: From that list select ‘Verify Data’. If QuickBooks reports that there is no issue it means your data is alright. On the other side, if you get a message saying “Your data has lost integrity” or “A data problem prevents QuickBooks from continuing” it
means your data is corrupted or has a structural issue. And in this case, you will have to run the Rebuild Data tool.
Step 5: Click on ‘Windows’ and select ‘Close All’ in order to close all the QuickBooks windows.
Step 6: To launch the Rebuild Data tool, click on ‘File’ and select ‘Utilities’. Now from the drop-down menu, go to ‘Rebuild Data’ option.
Step 7: Click on ‘OK’ and a pop-up will come warning you to take a backup of your file. It is recommended to create an entirely new backup file and don’t overwrite the existing file. To prevent overwriting, give a new name to the file when prompted.
Click 8: Wait for some time and let the Rebuild Data Utility finish the process. When completed, click on ‘OK’.
Step 9: Close the company file. Reopen the file to refresh the list.
Step 10: Select the company file and now to launch the file, click on ‘Open’.
Step 11: In order to verify if the data file is clean and is repaired, again run the Verify Data utility.

  • Recover Corrupted Project file

I got this message when trying to load a WIP file: "The project could not be loaded, it may be damaged or contain outdated elements."
I've searched the forums as well as on other sources on how to deal with it. So far I've tried:
    1. Check files on AutoSave folder. No luck. All 5 files gave the same message
    2. Fix XML with XML wrench. Tried the "Check is Well Formed" & "Check is Valid" and both said ok"
    3. Restarted PC. Same thing.
    4. Move project and working files to other folders - same.
    5. Created a blank project and tried to import sequence - no sequence show up.
    6. Import from After Effects and Exported - no luck as well. Came up with a message saying there's no valid sequence.
Would appreciate if anyone can help look into my project file to see if this is salvagable. The file looks ok, but it just won't load for some reason.

Thanks in advanced for your help.
    Some info:
    Adobe Premiere Pro 6.0
    Windows 7 64bit
    Using Plural Eyes plugin

For what's worth, after hours of searching online for a solution and tinkering with the XML file, I managed to figure out how to salvage my project. What I did was to import my file into After Effects, and then single out the sequence I need, then went to Adobe Dynamic Link and created a project file in Premiere. Then I copied the sequence from AE and pasted it into Premiere, and deleted (what I took a while to find out) a screwed up sequence from the project and saved the project and ta-da.. it now opens fine.
I'm still unsure why the 1 or 2 sequence is causing the project to be corrupted, but I don't have the time to investigate as I need to complete this project asap.
Thanks to all that have helped.

  • How can i recover corrupt .mov files that quicktime does not recognise?

we recently 'lost' a whole day's footage by accidentally deleting it. in trying to recover these files we have used many different programs and have had odd results.... sometimes the data is recovered and shows only thumbnails but not the proper film and othertimes says tht quick time cannot open the link because it doesn't reconise the codec. these clips were filmed with a Canon SLR camera and we have searched the reformqatted sandisks as well with the same result.... quicktime does not recognize the file.
any thoughts? it would be a tragedy to lose this footage... well not really, but you know - a whole day's work!
thanks in advance for your help.

I managed to rescue damaged AVCHD footage using photorescue. Some files were not complete, but I got them to play by trying different players like VLC, or mpeg streamclip, then exporting the clip as a new same format file. One or two were too badly damaged to rescue, but I got most back eventually.

  • Recover corrupted movie file

I have a movie file that I can play on my macbook. When sent to someone else to view, I get the error 2002. I tried sending to myself to view on my windows based system and get the same message. I have the most uptodate java, quicktime and have tried all the other fixes recommended for the errors(e.g.tagger and ccleaner). Oh, I have tried importing it into a new project and remaking it, no luck playing it anywhere but on my mac.

Open the file using QuickTime Player.
Open the Movie Inspector window to report what it says about your file.

  • Recovering DMG file

    Hi there,
I created a DMG which contained everything form my previous install.
Recently I accidentally started deleting all files in my home directory because of sloppy terminal use, so everything in Desktop and Documents was deleted.
I immediately recovered all files I could find and got the bunch. At no point did I restart my computer, before tonight.
So to the issue: I restarted my laptop and then I realised that my backup DMG was located in the documents folder; the only reason I've been able to access all of those files is because the DMG was already mounted.
Is there a way for me to recover the DMG file at this stage?
The file was 55GB and now I have 55GB more free - so I have a bit of hope that all contents might still be there.
Please let me know if you have any tips.
If you want to post articles about good backup policies, feel free, but I do realise I need to revise my setup

Highly unlikely having most likely overwritten part of the drive where the file was actually stored. You can see the following:
    Basics of File Recovery
    Files in Trash
If you simply put files in the Trash you can restore them by opening the Trash (left-click on the Trash icon) and drag the files from the Trash to your Desktop or other desired location. OS X also provides a short-cut to undo the last item moved to the Trash -press COMMAND-Z.
If you empty the Trash the files are gone. If a program does an immediate delete rather than moving files to the Trash, then the files are gone. Recovery is possible but you must not allow any additional writes to the hard drive - shut it down. When files are deleted only the directory entries, not the files themselves, is modified. The space occupied by the files has been returned to the system as available for storage, but the files are still on the drive. Writing to the drive will then eventually overwrite the space once occupied by the deleted files in which case the files are lost permanently. Also if you save a file over an existing file of the same name, then the old file is overwritten and cannot be recovered.
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

    Basic Backup
Get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Backuplist
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    iBackup
    JaBack
    Silver Keeper
    MimMac
    Retrospect
    Super Flexible File Synchronizer
    SuperDuper!
    Synchronize Pro! X
    SyncTwoFolders
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined. It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.) You can purchase hard drives separately. This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice. Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu. You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available. You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports. I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.) You can find enclosures at places such as;
    Cool Drives
    OWC
    WiebeTech
    Firewire Direct
    California Drives
    NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover. Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.
