Recovering data from a newly formatted hard drive

Has anyone had any experience with programs that recover data from a newly formatted hard drive?  There seem to be a lot of programs out there to do this, but, a) do they work, and b) which one worked best for you?

Ive had so and so success with a freeware utility called "Recuva"
http://www.recuva.com/
Its from the makers of CCleaner.

  • Recovering Data from A WD External Hard Drive

I have an older IMAC 20 2007- Leopard 10.6 installed and running great. I have a 1tb WD hard Drive via FireWire and a 2tb hard drive via USB 2 as there is no Seta hook up on the IMAC. I also have a 500Gig WD external hard drive that has a lot of saved movies and programs on it. I Want to recover the movies on the 500 Gig. to the 2 tb or teh 1 tb hard drive. The problems is, when the IMAC recognizes the 500Gig Hard drive it will not copy the movies over as it says "they are in use and cannot be copied" OR the IMMAC will not recognize the 500Gig drive at all, it says the hard drive is not recognized. The movies were copied to that hard drive with the IMAC Why can I not recover them from the Hard Drive? I assume that the hard drive may be on its way out. Does anyone know how to recover those files? Mostly Movies MP3s and some programs. Thank you

Install OS X for emergency use so you can do repairs and maintenance, on another drive.
Some iMacs can, at least now, maybe retrofitted, have an eSATA controller added. Yes, shame there is no ExpressCard slot of native external SATA ports.
USB2 is slow and terrible interface for today's drives, real need for USB3 drives.
    Tried Data Rescue 3 demo?
How about a full volume clone operation with SuperDuper or TriBackup 5, or Carbon Copy Cloner?
WD MyBook units can be Mac-unfriendly and trouble, there are Mac specific models of WD MyBook or there are other makes that do work, usually use the Oxford chip bridge to provide USB/FW/eSATA.
Maybe there are errors with file system, data, or even the drive directory causing problems.
Do the external drives have their own power supply? should.

  • Recovering data from my windows external hard disk

I have a unique bit of problem. Well, i used windows system 3 years back when i switched to mac. I saves all my data in my windows format hard drive. From there i used usb thumb drive to transfer to mac. Recently i found that my windows hard drive is not working properly and so some of very important data i can't retrieve. I tried that hard drive in my office pc and can't read any data.
Is there any way i can retrieve data and bring to my mac formatted hard drive?

When you attach your old external hard drive to the mac what happens?  Do the lights on the drive come on?  Do you hear and feel the drive "spin up"?  DO you get any type of message on the Mac?
Your Mac can read the majority of external hard drive file systems that would have been used with Windows computers now and in the past (FAT or NTFS).  About the only thing that would not work is if that drive was either encrypted or used a very non-standard driver that was only available for Windows.
Let us know exactly what happens when you first power up, and then attach your drive to the Mac.  Also, what make and model is the drive?

  • How do I transfer all data from my old internal hard drive to a new internal hard drive

How do I transfer all data from my old internal hard drive to a new internal hard drive? I have an iMac with a 320gb internal HD that is full and I am replacing it with a 2tb internal drive. I have several external drives; 1 tb, 2tb and 3 tb. The 2 tb is being used for Time Machine. Do I have to buy an enclosure? If so, where would I get an inexpensive one?
I also want to partition the new internal drive for Windows, and I'm not sure how much space to use for that. I plan to use Windows to check my work in PowerPoint created on my Mac for clients on PCs.

Do you already have Time Machine making backups onto the 2TB drive? If so, after you get the internal drive replaced, boot up into the recovery partition (hold down ⌘R) and restore the latest Time Machine backup that you have onto the new internal drive.
I recommend always having two backups. I'd use SuperDuper to make a complete clone of your internal drive onto an external drive in addition to having the Time Machine backup.
Boot Camp is what is used to make partitions for Windows. How much space to allocate depends on how much space you expect Windows to use up based on how you plan to use it.

  • Can I retrieve data from my iPhone 4 hard drive without the SIM card?

Can I retreive data from my iPhone 4 hard drive without the sim?

There is no hard drive in an iPhone, it is all solid state memory. If the phone is working you can always copy content from it. If it is not you will need to restore and activate it, and that requires a SIM card.

  • Recovering erased data from a back-up hard drive

    Hello,
I erased a folder full of data on my back-up hard drive (Western Digital), and need to recover if it possible. I deleted it and then emptied my Trash, but have not written over it yet. How can I recover this folder? Thanks.

Try using an application such as Data Rescue or FileSalvage.

  • Transfer data from mac to external hard drive

I am new to macs and am a bit lost.
I have a made up external hard drive (internal hard drive in a case) - TOSHIBA MK8025GAS Media. It is connected to the mac via USB.
I have been using it to transfer data from my pc to mac. The mac sees it and i can copy things from the hard drive to mac without problems. What i cannot do is to transfer from the mac onto the hard drive.
I pulled up the mac info of the hard drive and its both writable and ejectable (Has two partitions). In the partitions the info states that the owners aren't enabled, cannot turn owners off and cannot be formatted. Also the S.M.A.R.T. status is not supported. Not usre what all this means!
Can anyone tell me how to set it up to be able to transfer files to the hard drive from the mac and if it is possible to still transfer from windows to the hard drive?
    Thank you in advance.

    Thank you for the info.
A friend also told me that i could erase the hard drive using the disk utility in ms dos format. I have tried this and then could also partition it afterwards.
At the moment this seems to be working in both Mac and PC.
One thing i have noticed is when i try to transfer disk images (over 4Gb), near the end i get an 'unexpected error occured' (error code 1309).
    From the internet:
error -1309 fileBoundsErr: file's EOF offset mark or size is too big
    Whatever this means?

  • HT4796 Can i use windows migration assistant to transfer files from a windows formatted hard drive to a mac?

I have a windows formatted hard drive and a macbook pro. I was wondering if i could use the windows migration assistant to transfer files from my hard drive to the mac

    No.
Just connect the drive to your Mac. The Mac can read most Windows formats (it cannot WRITE Windows New Technology File System (NTFS) formatted drives.

  • How do I restore all of my data to a newly installed hard drive from my time machine backup?  Thanks

I had to replace my hard drive, I am new to restoring the data from the time machine.  Is there anywhere that the steps are clearly articulated as I am not that versed in this kind of stuff?  Thanks for responding.

    Here it is: http://www.apple.com/au/osx/recovery/
As far as I'm concerned, the ONLY way to do this is to connect your macbook to your time capsule via Ethernet and restart it holding down the COMMAND-R keys.
This will take you to a restore prompt which will boot from your time capsule. The restore will then be a complete and up to date version of your old hard disk.
Don't even bother with older boot disks. I wished I got this advice from the many enquiries I made over two days! Restore took 2.5 hours.
Only found out about command R by a random google search late at night. So anybody replacing their hard drive and restoring from a time machine backup - do this!

  • Problem with recovering data from Bit Locker enabled hard disk with bad sectors

    Hi,
I have Lenovo T430 laptop with Windows 7 and Bit Locker enabled hard disk. While working I encountered blue screen error multiple times. After some time, the laptop stopped to boot by itself and started showing error 'A disk read write error has occurred.
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart' message. I tried to connect the hard disk to a different PC as a secondary drive and tried to check the disk to recover the data. The 500 GB disk is showing as unallocated space and I am not sure how to recover the
data from the hard disk. Appreciate your help to recover the data from corrupted hard disk.
I used the Lenovo Diagnostics tools available in BIOS and it showed 48 bad sector errors on the hard disk. I also used Windows 7 CD and tried auto repair but it looks like it didn't do anything.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi  SenneVL,
Since there are 48 bad sectors on your hard disk, this means the system can not boot any more, the data might not be restored in a normal way, you'd better turn to data restore company for help.

  • How do I get data from a pc external hard drive to my mac

I am about to purchase an Air. I have an external hard drive I have used for years with my PC.  It has countless pictures and music.  How can I get that data from my PC external drive to my new Air and also to the Time Machine?

Thank you for your reply.  It is a Western Digital external USB 3.0 formatted for PC.  It includes pics, videos, music, documents, power point, etc.  would it still just be a drag and drop?
    Thanks!

  • How do I retrieve data from my broken macbook hard drive?

My macbook suddenly crashed and I had to do a forced shutdown. When I tried to turn it back in, a folder with a question mark kept flashing and by computer did not start. I looked up what might have been the cause of this, and I found out it was my hard drive or the cable that connects the drive to the mac. But I brought it to my school since they have tech support and they said that my hard drive is pretty much dead, but it can still be possible to retrieve the data from. I really need help because I need to hand in my Extended essay in about one week and I already had done quite a lot for my essay. Please tell me how to get all my data back, or past it to a new hard drive.

No no, I backed up my computer about 1 month ago but I never thought anything will happen. My mac never crashed before and I just was not expecting anything bad to happen to it, but I agree it was stupid of me to not back it up in daily bases. But thanks a lot for letting me know that I can retrieve my data.

  • How do I recover files from a Toshiba Canvio Hard Drive?

I have been backing up my computer with a Toshiba Canvio Hard Drive. My hard drive failed and I had to buy a new computer. I would like to save my data to the new computer, but I don't want to do a complete system backup because it would overwrite my new computer's operating system (or would it?). I would like to save individual files to my new computer. Is it possible to do this?

No way. Doing that would never overwrite you OS at anyhow. You can able to restore files from the backup copy, though you will not be able to restore file one by one.
    Alternate way
Try professional recovery software if the above methods didn't help you. Download it from here,

  • How can I transfer outlook data from Ipod to new hard drive?

My hard drive had to be replaced last week. Although my music was backed up by Norton 360, my Outlook contacts and calendar were not backed up. How can I transfer my data from my Ipod to my new hard drive? I am running Windowa XP, if that matters. Will a sync to Itunes destroy all my data on my Ipod?

You would need to enter at least one unique contact and calendar entry on the new computer, then when you first sync you should get the option to merge the data.

  • Transferring data from Time Machine external hard drive to band new mac

My husband bought me a brand new Mac but then powered it up to play with it and bypassed the magic transfer option at the very beginning which would have allowed me to transfer my backed up info from my old mac to this new one.
Is there a process that I need to go through now to make sure this information transfers correctly or do I just plug in my external hard drive and let it do its thing.
My worry is that I do something wrong and Time Machine doesn't know that I need to transfer to a new mac, it sincs with the new mac and the old data gets somehow erased.
    Paranoid? Oh yes!
    Thanks for any help....

Time Machine transfers of backed up info to any Mac are not automatic, nor does any backed up info get erased from the Time Machine backup when you do a transfer. You have two options for copying Time Machine backup files to the new Mac:
    1. Use Migration Assistant (found in Applications/Utilities) to migrate (copy) items to the new Mac. Select "From a Time Machine backup or other disk" as the migration method, then select the Time Machine backup of the old Mac, then select the items you want to transfer. You can select some or all of the user accounts on the old Mac, Applications (all or none), Settings files (Time Zone, Machine, and/or Network), & "Other" files & folders (which are any other root level files & folders not included in the above).
If you have already set up your network, time zone, etc. settings while playing with the new Mac then there is no particular need to migrate the old ones. If you migrate Applications, Migration Assistant will not replace newer versions with older ones, but it may transfer some old apps that don't work with Snow Leopard. This won't do any harm, but you may want to delete the incompatible apps as you discover them to save space on the new hard drive.
If you have created a new user account on the new Mac with the same name as some account on the old Mac, you will have to either give the old account a new name for the transfer or replace the new account with the old one, which will erase any user files you have created in the new account. Thus, you should save any such files to a backup if you want to keep them.
    2. Use Time Machine itself to restore selected files or folders from the Time Machine backup of the old Mac to the new one. Open Time Machine from the Dock, choosing "Browse Other Time Machine Disks…" from the popup options. Again, choose the Time Machine backup of the old Mac, & then select whatever dated backup you want to restore items from.
All this is harder to explain than to do in actual practice -- for the first method you get on-screen guidance for each step & for the second the interface is pretty intuitive.
