Recovering deleted partitions in Windows Server 2008 R2 Server Core

I was expanding one of my drive (Drive A) partitions to use space available on another drive (Drive B) and then I wanted to delete the extension so I clicked on the second drive (Drive B) and deleted that partition.  What I didn't realize is that
would delete the entire partition on Drive A.  Now that I have screwed up I desperately need to recover the partition.  I ran the free tool TestDisk (http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk) but it did not see the deleted partition.  Can someone
point me in the right direction for recovering the partition and or data?

Well I was able to fully recover the deleted partion and restore the Hyper-V VM's and figured I would share the steps I took to recover.
Deleted Partition Recovery
Do not reboot the machine because the MBR will be commited permanately.
Use a partition recover tool (I used Active@ partition recovery) to recover the
deleted partion.
Restore the MBR which should be the backup MBR at this point (not 100% sure on
this).
If you did reboot and you cannot restore the MBR then you may have to backup the
files from the deleted partition and recreate the partition manually. This was the case for me.
Use a file reovery tool (I used Active@ File Recovery)  to backup the deleted
files.
Recreate the Partition manually and restore from the backup.
Hyper-V Virtual HardDisk Restore
Restore the .VHD and .AVHD from the backups.
Because you restored from backup the ACL (Access Control List) entries will be
wiped and you will have to remove the hard drives from the virtual machine and reattach them.  Re-attaching the .VHD will recreate the appropriate ACL entries.  Worst case scenario you will have to recreate the VM and attach the hard drive.
Remove the Virtual Hard Drive from the Virtual machine via Hyper-V Manager.
If there are Snapshot files you must first merge them back into the main .VHD
Change the extension of the most recent .AVHD to .VHD.
From Hyper-V Manager select Edit Disk and browse to the newly renamed Snapshot
and use the Merge option to merge it with its parent disk.  The merge wizard will automatically select the appropriate parent to merge with.  Take a note of this name because you will have to repeat the process on this file.  In Hyper-V Versions
prior to 2008 R2 you may have to manually select the parent, in this case you will need to figure it out yourself but fortuanately you can sort by date and go from latest to oldest in order.
Repeat the above process with each successive Snapshot until you have merged with
the main .VHD for the VM.
Reattach the .VHD file which will restore the Hyper-V ACL entries.
Start the VM.
If you get the following error when logging in to the VM “The trust relationship
between the primary domain and the trusted domain failed.”  You will need to remove the machine from the domain and readd it to the domain via the local administrator account.

  • HP 4250TN Drivers on Windows Server 2008 Print Server

    Hi:
I'm having a heck of a time with HP 4250 printers installed on a Windows Server 2008 printer server.  First I used the PCL6 driver downloaded from HP site.  But then after client computers install printer they cannot print from Acrobat in landscape orientation.  Also, whenever I select Printer Properties on the server Windows responds that the print drivers are not installed,  asking if I want to install them.  My client machines are a mix of XP, W7 32-bit and W7 64-bit.  I switched to the PCL5 driver on the server, which fixed the Acrobat landscape issue, but now none of my XP clients can install the network printer, even  when browsing to the PCL 5 driver for XP as downloaded from HP's site (I have not had success installing the x86 drivers on my 64-bit printer server).
I can install the 4250 on an XP machine w/direct TCP/IP port using PCL 5e driver but then I  defeat purpose of print server.
Any suggestions on easiest driver/print server installation/cfg. is greatly appreciated!

  • Server 2008 Fax Server console doesn't show outgoing faxes

We are sending faxes from Windows XP clients through our Server 2008 Fax Server. Most of the faxes are sent, however the Server Fax Console never shows any faxes as being sent. The Fax Console does show the Incoming faxes that have been received. What can I do to get a log of the outbound faxes so we know they were sent successfully?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    Thanks for the post.
Please perform the following steps to check it:
    Open Fax Service Manager.
In the left pane, right-click Fax, and then click Properties.
        3.  On the Archives tab, please check the "Archive all faxes to this folder" item, and the sent faxes will be stored in this folder.
In addition, you could also use the following method enable activity logging for a fax server.
    Open Fax Service Manager.
In the left pane, right-click Fax, and then click Properties.
On the Activity Logging tab, select the Log incoming fax activity check box to start logging incoming faxes and the
Log outgoing fax activity check box to start logging outgoing faxes.
You should receive an alert that the Fax service needs to be stopped and then restarted. If you do not, then right-click
Fax, click Stop, right-click Fax again, and then click
    Start.
    Thanks,
    Miles
This is not a fix for this issue.  I would hardly call this a workaround.  We have admins that need to address fax sending issues when the faxes don't go through.  Seeing the global outbox and sent items is a must for us.  It needs to be
available from the fax console so the admin (secretary types, not IT admins) can review the issues.

  • Difference between SQL SERVER 2008 & SQL SERVER 2012 & SQL SERVER 2014

    Difference between SQL SERVER 2008 & SQL SERVER 2012 & SQL SERVER 2014 ?

What sort of databases do you have OLTP? Data warehouse? What requirements do you have for High Availability?
The main features for SQL 2012/2014, as I see it:
o  Support for window functions, which makes it possible to write fast queries for running totals, sliding windows etc.
o  Columnstore indexes, which can speed up your data warehouse enormously. But of no interest for OLTP. Only writable in SQL 2014.
o  AlwaysOn and Availability Groups, a vastly improve story for high availability and disaster recovery.
o  try_convert/try_cast, you can now easily filter out values from a column which does not convert to a number. A small but essential feature.
o  In memory-OLTP, a new in-memory engine in SQL 2014. This far with very limited feature set, and quite specialised.
Of the points above, the second and third require Enterprise Edition, the first and fourth are in all editions. For the last, I don't think Microsoft has announced anything yet.
There are also new stuff in the BI area, but that's out of my league.
And, oh, there is a new licensing model - which I think is holding more than one customer back.

    Hi,
We are trying to zip / compress a xml file that has been created by retrieving data from SQL Server 2008 R2 database running on Windows Server 2008.
To compress this file, we cannot use any external softwares like 7-zip or WinZip.
So, we would like to know if there is any windows default compression tool that works on command line to compress the file?
As this is a live server we cannot apply any other softwares.
Please suggest any ways to do it in Windows Server 2008 machine.

    Hi Shanif,
    Yes, we can do this.
Regarding how to enable Bitlocker via group policy, the following article can be referred to as reference.

After configuring the settings, we can use security filtering or WMI filtering to apply the policy to specific computers.
Regarding this point, the following blog can be referred to for more information.

  • ECC 6/MS Windows Server 2008/SQL Server 2008 Upgrade

I am working with a client who wishes to do an ECC upgrade from ECC 5 to ECC 6.  They also wish to upgrade the Op System from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008; and the database from MS SQL 2005 to MS SQL 2008.
My proposal is to Upgrade ECC, then the Op System then the DB in each environment before moving forward.  We would do the first upgrade in Sandbox to determine timing, issues, etc.  We would create a production support path to be used during the project, then start the upgrades Dev-QA-Prod.
The client has said that this is a risky approach and that SAP recommends a 2 step process, that is, upgrade ECC 6 thru all environments and then go back and do the Op Sys and Db upgrades afterward.
In my mind my approach is less risky as we will ensure each environment is clean and functioning smoothly before moving forward; there is less intrusion to the end user; testing is only accomplished once in each environment.  The actual production build would be split over 2 weekends, app upgrade first then op sys and db.
The assistance I need to understand isu2026.does SAP have a recommendation in this case?  I have not seen anything that says not to do the single step process I am recommending.
Thanks for any support you can provide.

    Hi,
If SAP is recomending that is because They recomends not to "mix" upgrades with any other process like Heterogeneous system copies, DB upgrades, etc. In fact this is in the upgrade guides. But I think like some others here has already writen, that you could upgrade and change OS and SQL server in two different steps but in the same process so the downtime will be longer but it will be only one.
Of course this will depend on how long your upgrade downtime will take because usually the upgrade could take 7 hours more or less, post upgrade tasks, export task (R3load), change OS and SQL server if not using different HW, import task and post copy tasks.
What is the maximun downtime your client is ready to tolerate? If you have a whole weekend beginning from friday afternoon and ending Monday morning probably you will have enough time to do all in one weekend but again, it will depend on your tests. Why don´t you talk to your client and tell them if they have new HW already for this project to do a Prod copy in one of those servers as part of the whole project and take the times you will need. Then with that in perspective you could decide what approach is better.
With some upgrades done under my belt to different clients I don´t assure anything until I do a test upgrade including all changes (os or DB) necesary to finish time schedules, then with that in mind then we can redefine the way we will use and we make that clear before the beginning of the project. I always tell them that it is better to do a test like this if they don´t have much available downtime, the project will take longer but for sure the Production downtime will be shorter.

  • Cannot install Office 2010 on Windows Server 2008 terminal server

    Hello
I have a Windows 2008 terminal server which has Office 2007 Professional Plus on it. We want to upgrade it to Office 2010 Professional Plus.
Following steps from Technet, I made sure all users were out of the terminal server, then selected "Install Application on Terminal Server", then ran the setup.exe file for Office 2010.
The splash screen comes up for Office 2010 but then disappears and the install does not progress, although the setup.exe is still running in Task Manager. The "install Application on Terminal Server" window is still open, waiting for me to click
Next, Finish or Cancel and nothing else happens.
I also tried putting the server into install mode from command prompt and rebooting the server and re-attempting but no good.
How can I go about troubleshooting this issue?
    Many thanks
    Luke Dunster

    Hi Luke,
Are you  using a volume license version of Office 2010 for Remote Desktop Services/Terminal
Services? I may be wrong but I think that only this version of Office 2010 will work on a Terminal
Server. The Retail Version will just not work in this case.
I had similar problem where I tried to upgrade from Office 2007 to Office 2010 on a Terminal Server (Windows
    2008) but wasn't successful with the upgrade/installation.

  • Fax and Scan on Server 2008 Terminal Server

Summary: Fax and Scan does not appear in the start menu on a terminal server with desktop experience installed.  Any ideas why?
I am running Windows Server 2008 Enterprise as  terminal server for about a dozen users.  I would like to enable them to use the fax server capability of our Windows SBS 2003 server.  From what I can tell, they can access the fax server using the Fax and Scan software on server 2008.  All of the documentation I've read says that when I enable the "Windows Desktop Experience" feature on Server 2008, the Fax and Scan software should appear in the Start Menu.  It's not there.  I have un-installed and re-installed Desktop Experience, but still no Fax and Scan.  From what I can see in the documentation, I don't need to install the fax server role to get the software, just the desktop experience feature.
Is is possible that fax and scan and/or other features of desktop experience are disabled when terminal services are enabled?  Is there something else I'm missing?
    Thanks,
    Lee

    Hi,
According to your description, I suspect that you may misunderstand “Desktop Experience” and “Windows Fax and Scan”.
Based on my research, if you want to use Fax and Scan services on Windows Server 2008, you should install the Fax Server role from Server Manager first.(For instructions, see Install the Fax Server Role. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc771198.aspx)
After you installing the Fax Server Role, the Windows Fax and Scan item will appear in the Start Menu(Start\All Programs\Windows Fax and Scan).
The Desktop Experience includes most of applications and features that are provided in the Windows Vista. Users who are using computers running Windows Vista Business, Windows Vista Enterprise, Windows Vista Ultimate, and Windows Server 2008 can send a fax using the Windows Fax and Scan feature—either using a fax device attached locally or a fax server. To access this feature on Windows Server 2008, you must install Desktop Experience, which is available from Server Manager.
You may refer to the following the steps to install Desktop Experience:
    1. Open Server Manager: click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and click Server Manager.
    2. In the Features Summary section, click Add features.
    3. Select the Desktop Experience check box, and then click Next. and then click Install
    Hope this is helpful.

    Hello,
Based on the following article, you must apply SP3 or SP4 for SQL Server 2008 to make it compatible with on Windows Server
    2012 R2.
    https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2681562/?wa=wsignin1.0
You can either perform a slipstream using the following Support article.

  • Windows 2011 (2008 R2) Server boots to repair options

Hi, I have looked at other threads but can't seem to solve my issue.
So I have Server 2011 installed and really took care of my system.  I was installing updates, on any power loss I ran chkdsk every time, installed proper drivers and it was really running well, though it's a consumer based pc (Some ASUS Desktop PC).
Last thing I did was install the Cannon MP160 driver so I could use scanning feature of the printer.  Default windows driver has no TWAIN driver built in.  The cannon website does not offer 2008 R2 driver, but instead only Windows 7 driver.
I am pretty certain that I rebooted after install which I generally always do.
However, there was a power loss.
So I turn on the pc, ASUS logo goes away, there is a dark screen and pc reboots itself.  Then from ASUS logo (POST that is) it goes to 1.repair my pc, 2. boot normal.  I tried F8 with safe mode, same thing, computer just reboots.  I tried
bootlogging and can't seem to find bootlog.txt with command prompt.
    So I tried this from command prompt;
chkdsk d: (windows installation) /r - no problem
rebuild bcd - can't find windows installation
there is another command where it makes sure the drive is bootable volume, so it does something to volume registry entry,  The process goes through three edits and 2nd edit says the access is denied.  I think command ends in NT60 /All
Then I tried Microsoft bootable ISO to uninstall 2 patches that could cause system to not boot - no success.
So last thing I tried was to use Windows 7 boot cd, which will give an option to repair possible boot problems.  Can't resolve them - that's what the message says.
Now, I am thinking well I really don't need Server running, I could just reinstall windows 7 and use that, since I really just use it as storage, but it would be nice to get the system back up and running the way it was.
Well, I am open to any suggestions, maybe an in-place installation should be done, if possible?
    Thanks,

    Might ask them over here.
