Recovering files from dead MacBook

I have a dead Macbook Pro. As in, it won't even turn on. This is key, as most discussions on this topic involve computers that will turn on, but won't totally boot. Is it possible for me to recover files from that computer if it won't turn on, and how? The hard drive is in working condition. The computer won't start, according to Apple, because a coffee spill (my fault) caused some damage to the area around the start up button. Everything else on the computer is in grand working condition as far as I'm aware.

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
What you can do is to take out the hard drive and make sure it's not water damaged. Then, buy a USB to SATA adapter, and connect it to any PC or Mac.
You won't have any problem to recover your data if you connect it to a Mac, but you will have problems with PCs. The filesystem that OS X uses is not detected by Windows, so you will have to install an application like Paragon HFS to read the hard drive and recover your data

  • Recovering Files from my Macbook

So my hard drive died this week. I tried to run time machine, the computer froze and then it wouldn't boot. It just hangs at the circle. I booted into single user mode and get this message disk0s2: 0xe0030005 (UNDEFINED).
When I run hardware utility it says there is nothing wrong, and when I run disk utility it gives me many errors. I have have another macbook accessible and have tried to get to the drive via Target Disk mode, but all the good Mac finds is the other's optical drive. No hard drive comes up. I have a knoppix live cd, which i have booted from, but cannot seem to access the HD this way either.
Does anyone have any ideas on what to do? I will replace the HD as soon as i get my files.

Unless you're willing to spend mucho $$$$ I think you're screwed. Sounds like your drive is dead. I won't rail about you not having a backup.

  • Restore files from dead Macbook with TM

My MacBook Pro just died. I have TM and I believe it is possible to restore my data.
    I'll be ordering a new MacBook pro today, but I want to access some of my files on my iMac as soon as possible. I also don't want to bring all the clutter from the three year old MBP over to a new one, I just need my music, school documents and pictures etc. But how do I restore just some of the files on a different computer? When I try to access TM from my iMac, all I see is this file;
    Marthe Hagens mac_0016cb96da54.sparsebundle
What kind of file is that? It's almost 80 Gb so I know it contains all my data. But I don't want to overwrite this iMac with all that....
I am not very good at this kind of computer things, that's why I love macs, they just work...

Yes, the backups are contained in that sparsebundle. Do not try to copy from it with the Finder.
You can use Migration Assistant (in your Applications/Utilities folder) to migrate Applications, User Accounts, Settings, etc., selectively.
Or you can restore selected files/folders individually, via the TM interface. Make sure the disk is mounted (appears on your desktop and/or Finder sidebar).
Since the backups were for a different computer, you can't use +Enter Time Machine+ in the normal way. Instead, hold down the Option key while selecting the TM icon in the menubar. +Enter Time Machine+ should change to +Browse Other Time Machine Disks.+
Then you can restore whatever items you want.

Hi all. Been in to genuis bar....apparently my logic board is fried. Comp will not start up....not a screen issue. They gave me options. I'm buying a new comp, but I was told there is a way to retrive my files from dead comp....anyone know how to do it without sending it out? Is this something I can do?

    Follow-up issue...
I purchased a new mac book and I was able to remove my old hard drive.  I connected the old hard drive to my new computer and was able to recover documents/files/some music.
I was attemting to open my old photo files, in order to select and copy only the photo albums and photoes I want to keep and....
However, I have encounntered a problem....when I try to open my old "IIPhoto Library" in my old "pictures" folder, I receive the follwoing message:
The Photo Library Needs to be Upgraded to Work With This Version of IPhoto.  Your photo library will not be readable by previous versions of IPhoto after the upgrade. The upgrade process for very large libraries can take an hour or more to complete.

  • Why cant i copy file from my macbook to my portable harddrive?

i just bought a new macbook. i'm kinda newbie. i tried copying file from my macbook to portable harddive. it didnt work. can anyone tell me why? by the way, my harddrive is NTFS system. the funny thing is that i can copy file from my harddrive to my macbook.
thanks for the kind soul out there.
mac book Mac OS X (10.4.9)

The easiest way around this is to reformat the external drive to be FAT32 if you want to use it with other PCs, or HFS+ if you only want to use it with Macs. You will lose all the data off the drive when you do this.
You can reformat the drive using Disk Utility.

  • How do I transfer a music file from my MacBook Pro to my iPhone?

How do I transfer a music file from my MacBook Pro to my iPhone?

If you download Adode Reader (free but very limited) or GoodReader (many features) - you can use file sharing.
Connect the iPad to the Mac and launch iTunes. Select the iPad on the left side under Devices. Click on the Apps tab in the iTunes window on the right. Scroll down to the File sharing apps window. Click on the file sharing app that you are using (Adobe Reader or GoodReader in this example). Drag the document from the desktop onto the file sharing window on the right side - or click on the add button in the lower right corner - and navigate to where the file is on the Mac and select it that way.

  • How do I move my files from my Macbook to a pc?

How do I move my files from my MAcbook to my pc?

What operating system is the PC running?
You will need to turn on file sharing on the PC. For Windows XP use methods described here. Windows 7 here.
Connect to the shared Windows volume by going to the Go menu in the Finder and selecting Connect to Server... In the resulting dialog type smp:// and the IP address of your windows machine. Click Connect and enter your Windows machine's username and password when prompted.
The Windows share will now appear on your Mac's desktop. Drag the items you want to copy over to it.
    Best of luck.

  • I want to transfer all my iPhoto, iTunes, contacts, etc. files from my MacBook, which I am selling to a MacBook Pro. What is the easiest and safest method of achieving this? Can the files backed up on Time Machine be transferred to the Pro?.

I want to transfer all my iPhoto, iTunes, contacts, documents, etc. files from my MacBook, which I am selling, to a MacBook Pro. What is the easiest and safest method of achieving this? Can the files backed up on Time Machine from the MacBook be transferred to the Pro in some way? I would like to capture the files as they appear on the MacBook, such as "Events" in iPhoto and the various song categories within iTunes without having to rename them all once saved on the Pro, which is the case with photos when I simply save them to thumb drive and import them to the Pro. Sny advice would be appreciated.
    Best regards,
    Rob.

    Michael,
Thanks for all your assistance. There is no need for apologies, Migration Assistant did indeed create a second account for the MacBook data. It has just taken me some time to figure out how to access it. I now have all the MB data in one account and the MBP files in another, which suits me fine. In fact, it is an advantage in my case as it keeps the private and business aspects separated.
I will however try the fatcatsoftware to transfer all the iPhoto files to my iMac, where I keep my main photo library. and it will be of help to keep the events, etc in the transfer. As far as iTunes is concerned, I have HomeSharing on all my computers and this has obviated the need to worry about playlists being transferred successfully. However, HomeSharing did not appear to share the iPhone/iPod apps that were stored on the MB and although these have now come across with the new MacBook account on the MBP, I was wondering whether my iPhone and iPod will be recognised by the MBP and sync with it? Will I need to have the MB account open to achieve this or will the MBP recognise and sync with the iPhone/iPod automatically irrespective of which account is open?
Thanks for the tip on deauthorising my iTunes account from the MB before sellng. This I will do and I believe the best way to remove all of my data from the hard drive is to reinstall the MacOSX operating system software. Is this the right approach to securely delete everything?
Thanks again for sharing your expertise and your guidance through this exercise.
    Best regards,
    Rob.

  • HELP! How can i restore/recover files from Bootcamp with Boot Failure - Missing operating system error?

    Hi,
I am having a few problems with bootcamp on my imac. When i tried to move the bootcamp partition on windows 7 into free space, it crashed and turned off. Ever since i have had the error 'Missing operating system' and it fails to boot. I have some very important files on the bootcamp partition. Is it possible to recover these files or even to restore the bootcamp partition to it's original state? I do not have a backup of my bootcamp partition. Another problem i have is that ever since i tried to expand my macintosh HD partition into free space, when i hold alt while booting up (to choose which partition to boot like i normally do), the bootcamp partition has stopped appearing. This means that i cannot even boot the windows 7 bootcamp partition anymore!
So basically here are my 2 questions:
How can i restore/recover files from Bootcamp with Boot Failure - Missing operating system error?
How can i make the Bootcamp partition appear in Startup Disk and when i hold the option key while starting up my computer to allow me to boot windows 7?
Any solutions are very much apreciated!
    Thanks!
I know that bootcamp (disk0s4) hasn't been fully deleted since it appears in disk utility (i cant do anything to it though)
And here is the error i see when i try to launch bootcamp (back when i was actually able to boot up bootcamp to the error screen)

WinClone 3 is OS X and saves Windows image it makes for restore - that should work but you will have to try and you would need to make a new image unless it also works with a native Windows system restore image. It is now supported and has come a long way.

Paragon Clone OS works and does disk-to-disk clone just like CCC you end up with two bootable drives. But does not work with your setup. It would let you clone and move your Windows install to an SSD or another disk drive though and be bootable.
During its clone process it checks for errors which is very helpful and lets you know - something CCC and others should adopt more of.

I wish for our/my sake you had re-read and rewritten the long 'story' and broken it into a brief list of facts we needed.
    OS X
    Windows
Backup (though external is much safer) and you want bootable OS X clones as well as TimeMachine

    https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1553
There are a number of things to do like chkdsk and others as well as Windows DVD to do automatic system repairs and find out why.
AppleHFS - the abilty to mount and read HFS volumes can be notorious.
I would rearrange and redo your storage setup and how you use the 4-5 internal hard drive bays.

  • How can I recover files from an iPod Touch (4th gen) prior to a required restore?

How can I recover files from an iPod Touch (4th gen) prior to a required restore?
The iPod Touch was working perfectly fine.  iTunes suggest that I update the iPod Touch to the latest operating software, and I proceeded to do so.  Then a message popped up stating that the iPod Touch needs to be fully restored - and that all data will be lost.  The iPod Touch now displays the 'plug into iTunes' screen, and is stuck there.  There are irreplaceable family momentos on the iPod Touch.  How can I recover files from an iPod Touch prior to a required restore?  HELP...

Your only hope is to contact a data recovery company. When it shows the connect to iTunes screen the iPod is essentially deleted.
You can restore from an existing backup

  • How to recover files from a deleted partition?

Unfortunately, my OSX was not booting and I deleted my partition. Through the Internet Recovery mode I reinstalled the original OSX Mountain Lion it came with. I then upgraded to Maverick. I know that deleting a partition practically means all files are lost. I heard that files can be recovered on a Windows when a partition is deleted. Is there any way I can recover files from a partition that was deleted just a day ago?

    Hi,
Yes, it is possible to recover deleted partition or volume on Mac. Previously I was able to recover all my data lost due to accidental deletion of partition on my Mac PC by using recover Mac data software. This tool is really helpful, here you can download this tool.

  • I am unable to copy files from my macbook pro to my external hard disk.

I am unable to copy files from my macbook pro to my external hard disk. I tried to copy a movie 800mb in size to my EDD and  it shows the loading box and it says zero kb loaded out of 800mb and sometimes it loads a a few kb of the file, then after a while it ejects my hard disk and gives a message saying you should have ejected it properly. and it sometimes gives this message
"The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “....” can’t be read or written.
    (Error code -36)".
This happens with a range of files if they are more than a few mb in size, so I am pretty sure its not the file problem. It also occurs sometimes when i try to copy from my EDD to my mac.
I have tried everything. I formatted my EDD to MS-DOS (FAT) format because i need to use it with mac and windows. I tried resetting The SMC and the PRAM and NVRAM. I tried verify and disk repair on disk utility. But the same thing happens over again and it is really frustrating. The problem doesnt happen with my PC.
My EDD is an  Apollo 320GB hard drive from Imation.
Also are there any particular EDD brands that may not have this issue with MACs and can be used on mac and PC?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hey guys,
So this is follow up from my debarkle with the EDD. I found out my problem with copying files from Mac to EDD and vice versa was a result of a not so good EDD ( i had an apollo hard drive from imation) that was not very compatible with macs. So i did my research and found out that the best hard drives were Western Digital and Seagate. I bought the newest western digital EDD 1TB and formated it to FAT32 and guess what...no problems so far. The only problem is that FAT32 format doesn't copy files larger than about 4 gigs so i couldnt copy a movie from my brothers computer onto my EDD that was 1080p. You could probably resolve that by partitioning a small part of your hard drive in ExFAT? but yeah, hopefully that helped guys.

  • How do i save files from my macbook to an external hard drive

Ive always been a PC user until recently when i purchased a macbook pro. I have an external hard drive that i used to back up all my files including word documents & mp3's etc. I now want to use the same hard drive to back up files from my macbook but i dont want to make a copy of the entire drive (like with time line) i just want to save individual files. When i go to do this, a light grey circle appears with a 'cross out' and i am unnable to copy/save the file. In the past (with PC) all i have had to do is drop and drag to perform this function. I have attempted to make an alias, copy and paste etc to overcome the problem but nothing thus far has worked.

Your external drive is formatted NTFS which OS X can read from but not write to. You can either install third-party software on the Mac to enable writing to the drive or repartition and reformat the drive for exclusive use with the Mac. If you don't need to move files between a Mac and a PC, then I would recommend the latter solution.
    Tuxera NTFS 2012.3.2
NTFS for Mac OS X 9.5.3
    To repartition:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select the external hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
