Recovering from a crash during edit (6.1)

Hello again,
There used to be resource (.rsc) files that, post crash, one could rename .VI and open - sometimes recovering work after a crash.  I Don't remember what version(s) this was in, perhaps 4.x - maybe 5.x too.  Is there any such "recovery option" in LabVIEW 6.1, 7.1 , or 8.0 ?
Thanks.
(Most interest is in 6.1 options, as 7.1 seems very stable)

When they give imbeciles handicap-parking, I won't have so far to walk!

I seem to recall that Labview used to create these .rsc files in revision 4.X as well as other temporary files.
If I remember correctly they were created in the temporary directory C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\.
You had to clean them out from time to time in Windows 3.X
(crashing of course was a frequent occurence on Windows 3.1 and when Bill said we wouldn't  see GPF error message again, we never did - he changed the message)
I don't recall that you could load the .rsc files but the structure was certainly reminiscent of a LabVIEW VI of the time (it was a tantalizig glimpse of what could have been).
Perhaps someone else could recall more? Anyway I tried and coudn't load one; but then my Windows machines don' crash (honest)
But what an ace idea, a bit like the 'Edit Undo' feature, it was a long time coming but when it did we all wondered how we lived without it.
Perhaps they could addd an option to write open file formats (sort of XML) and really start something?

Has anyone had trouble with iPhoto5 crashing in the middle of editing photos? This has happened too many times to count & I always lose any new albums & ALL changes (even simple filename changes) but my photos are still there.
In order to avoid further frustration, I have to make a couple simple changes to very few photos, quit the app & then go back in for more work. But if it crashes during my editing process, I have to restart my system or the app just keeps crashing.

One photo changed and saved ok.
Next photo changed and crashed at save.
    Your efforts are greatly appreciated.

  • Recovering from HDD crash - Netboot Images

    Howdy's,
Essentially, I have a G4 (866mhz) Quicksilver tower as a server here. Its an older machine but does its job. Until such time as I started to lose the HDD.
All of the LDAP/WGM configs I've been able to recreate. No problem there.
However, /Library/Netboot/NetbootSP0 has a few Netboot images that are used for imaging here.
Because of the HDD starting to fail, I've had to recreate the server. I would have expected that just copying from the original drives, to a share, and then back again would have it work.
    Not so.
When copying back and starting the NetBoot service, it's picked up the images, and the configs (joy!) that were their previously.
However, if I try to Netboot a G3, G4 or Intel (which all worked 3 weeks ago) they crash during the boot process. The crash is pretty random and basically results in a corrupted screen display.
Given that one of the images has had about 3 years worth of development in it that has ZERO documentation about it.. I'd like to recover, not reproduce
Where should I be looking for more information? Does anyone have any guides/howto's I should be looking at?
    Cheers,
    Jason

    Somewhat solved.
I have no idea why this failed originally, but... I didn't have enough space on any Mac machine to copy (scp/cp/finder copy and paste) the images to when the machine was still running.
    So I copied them to a Win2k3R2 SMB/CIFS share.
That seems to have been the problem.
Got hold of a Firewire caddy, pulled the data off the old drive (after 10 attempts, that's one sick drive and tried again. Success.
There must be some meta-data or the like associated with the files themselves that caused this.
Even with HIGH logging on the Netboot server, there is no difference in the previous logs to the current one. The current attempts just boot..

  • How to recover from a Crash

    Hi,
I had the misfortune yesterday of having my OS X Lion operating system have a complete meltdown and become unrecoverable.  Luckily, I had a time machine backup from the previous evening, so the sequence went something like this:
Boot with Command-R option to bring up the recovery options, selected recovery from time machine
    Wait approx 2 hours....
All back - or is it???
Aperture's library is not backed up by Time Machine (I'm using referenced, so the images are fine).  Luckily, I have a vault...
    Point Aperture to the Vault
    Recover recover recover.... waiting waiting....
    Finished!
But wait!  All the images now have a red stripe icon at the bottom right.  Blast - I now have to locate referenced files.  It appears that Aperture lost the links or doesn't recognise the locations because of the complete wipe and recover from backup
Locate referenced files, find a match, "Reconnect All".  Done.
OH noes....  some didn't appear to reconnect.  Checking - aha!  THe vault is a couple of months old, and I did a big cull of useless images after updating the vault - the remaining unconnected images can safely be deleted from Aperture as they no longer exist.
Now to re-do the processing of the 30 images I was working on last night...  (sigh...)
    Lessons Learned:
    1.  Make sure Time Machine is working
    2.  Update your Vault regularly onto an external hard disk

I seem to recall that it was a recommended approach to stop huge Time Machine updates every time you touched Aperture.
Time machine now makes incremental backups of the Aperture Library - unless the library is in use by Aperture while Time Machine is running. It suffices to quit Aperture before backing up. That is what I do on my MBP.
Something else to note for the record:  when you do a recovery and reinstall from Time Machine, Aperture perceives your reconstructed boot volume as a new volume, even though it has the same name and everything.
Exactly, but thankfully reconnecting is easy.
To restore a system I usually restore from a bootable clone. I regularly clone the system as a secondary backup.
    Cheers
    Léonie

  • Audition CS5.5 constantly crashing during editing

I am running Adobe Audition version 4.0 Build 1815 on 64-bit Windows 7 Professional edition.  Audtion used to run great for the last 12 months or so, but recently - during last 4 weeks or so - it crashes unexpectedly during an edit session.  While saving I also frequently see a warning that this file is being used by some other application (hence can't be saved).  I have turned off all backup software (Mozy, Dropbox etc.) wondering if they are somehow conflicting with Audtion.
Here's is a typical event log entry when it crashes:
Faulting application name: Adobe Audition.exe, version: 4.0.0.1815, time stamp: 0x4d8ba538
Faulting module name: ntdll.dll, version: 6.1.7601.17725, time stamp: 0x4ec49b8f
    Exception code: 0xc0000005

    Faulting process id: 0x1fec
    Faulting application start time: 0x01cd97ea244e34f8

    Report Id: 0356a428-03de-11e2-93eb-0025115f268c
Is this a known issue and is there a fix available?
    regards,
    Sudhanshu Thakur
    Durham, NC

    Hi Sudhanshu,
Unfortunately, that error doesn't tell us too much about why the crash occurs.  Are you typically working in Waveform view, or Multitrack View?  If you get the error that the file is currently in use, does it work if you uncheck the box labeled "Include markers and other metadata" in the Save As dialog?
Let's try forcing Audition to rebuild its preference files as a first step and see if this makes a difference.
    1. Open Explorer and navigate to C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Audition  (Note - you will probably need to type the "AppData" folder name manually into the address bar as it's hidden by Windows by default.)
    2. Click on the "4.0" folder located there and rename it to "4.0_BACKUP"
    3. Launch Audition
It will rebuild all of its preferences, so for now, any presets you had will not be available.  If we determine this change fixes the issue, you can move some of the files/folders from "4.0_BACKUP" into the new "4.0" folder to restore these.  Notably: "EffectPresets.xml", and "Favorites.xml"

  • Please Help!  Need thumbnails from Album SE imagewell cache to help recover from HD crash

    Hello,
I have 8 years of photos organized in Album SE. The external drive that I keep the photos on crashed in the middle of a backup operation. I lost around 1/2 of my photos. I was able to recover thousands of JPEGS from the drive with recovery software but they are simply generically named 00001.jpg, 00002,jpg, etc. through 11321.jpg and are devoid of any metadata. I have found image comparison software that can recognize duplicate images between hard drive directories (even with resizing or resolution differences). My only hope to recover my album is to somehow retrieve the thumbnails from the cache, save them by their original filenames, and then use the duplicate image finder along with some scripting to match, identify, and then rename the recovered files. I can then relink them to the album and be fully restored.
I have gotten as far as finding the tn.4.cache file, and can get to the metadata through MS Access; but of course I have no way of getting the thumbnails out of the cache without help.
These photos are from my toddler's first few years and I also lost many recent pictures of my 3-week old son. If anybody from Adobe or any users could provide any assistance I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks in advance for any assistance,
    Bill Starrs

Jim, thanks for the information. The images that I have recovered are at 1200x1600, there are just way too many of them to sort through and they have lost their original names and metadata in recovery. My objective is to identify and rename them using a comparison tool so they are organized again; if not I have to visually sort through 11 thousand images to find the one I want.
I have been using the image comparison software to try to eliminate duplicate images from my recovery. It has proven successful at matching up 1200x1600 originals with 56x75 thumbnail files of the same images.
Yes, if I screen capture, crop, and save each missing image I can rebuild my collection either as 300x400 images or link them back through comparison to 1200x1600, but there are thousands of these. I can't capture, crop, save, and rename thousands of files. The frustrating thing is that work is already done for me in the image cache. Are there no Adobe people browsing these groups that could cut me some slack?
    Thanks,
    Bill

  • Iphoto 11 weird rotation/color and crashes during editing?

So,....Seemingly, everything is working fine, i upload photos from camera, organize them, make deletions and then begin to edit a few photos..... and then suddenly only a few minutes in to workflow...BAM!.... the current photo I am editing turns a dark red and rotates completely upside down and the entire program locks up.  I have to unplug the computer and restart!...and of course I loose whatever editing I managed to get done
I can open iphoto and begin again only to have this entire scenario unfold again
just upgraded my mac mini march 2012 to Snow Leopard and Iphoto 11 and have had this problem ever since!!
I want to add PSE for further editing options, but am afraid to add any more confusion to my misbehaving mac program!!
Can anyone PLEASE tell me what is wrong and how to fix this?
    Thanks,
    Paula

First try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists.  If you have no problem editing in the test library the problem is caused by your existing library.
If that's the case make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy)  of your library and apply the three fixes in order as necessary.
    Fix #1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your HD/User/Home()/ Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your HD/User/Home()/Library /Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #3
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If the test library performs the same as your current library then a reinstall of iPhoto is indicated. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder and from the /var/db/receipts/  folder,
Then install iPhoto from the source it came from originally and apply all needed updaters.

  • Recovering from a crash - how to get all your iTunes settings back!

Failed hard drive? Have a backup? Can't use Time Machine? Have an iPhone and a lot of music and don't want to go through setting it all up again? If you answered yes to all those questions, this is for you!
So this isn't really a question, and I'm not trying to sell anything (but I do have questions at the end for anyone who can answer). I'm posting this possible solution here because I have just confirmed it works, and I have been looking everywhere for how to do this and couldn't find the answer. I've had my second hard drive failure in the last 6 months (another Seagate), and I'm sick of having to start over again with the iTunes settings, syncing my iPhone, authorizing the store, holding my breath to see if my iPhone will be erased, etc. (Another reason I'm posting this here is because I might need to remember what I did later!)
If you were able to do a Time Machine backup you may not need this, but in my case, both Seagate drives failed before I could complete the entire backup. (In one case that left me with a large file that I could access by right-clicking and choosing Show Contents). If you don't want to restore from Time Machine but you were able to rescue your data, or if you want to have a fresh start on everything you can still pull from your Time Machine backups.
In my case I was able to recover 75% of my files (with Disk Warrior, but the drive completely failed before I could get it all) and I had already kept a backup of my Music folder, where I manually manage all of my music.
After installing my new Hitachi drive and re-installing Leopard, running the updates, etc. I was at the same versions of OSX and iTunes and everything.
I first copied all my backed up music folder, back into my Music folder where they were before. (This included the iTunes folder inside the Music folder.)
Just in case that wasn't enough, and I don't think it was last time I tried this, I found this article on how to remove all files related to iTunes:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1224
I used this article to learn what else iTunes uses, and where those files and folders are located, and I was able to copy those files and folders from the restore / backup, and copy them into the new places. Because I hadn't yet run iTunes for the first time on the fresh install, most of those files and folders hadn't yet been created yet so I knew I could just delete them again if this plan didn't work.
A summary of the relevant portions of the article, but make sure to replace "drag it to the trash" with "add it back here from your backup" (and note that a "~" symbol means it's under "Users/YourName"):
    1. In the Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder and type in ~/Library/ and click Go.
    2. Locate the iTunes folder and then drag it to the Trash.
    3. Choose Go > Go to Folder and type in ~/Library/Preferences/ and click Go.
    4. Locate the preference files that have names beginning with com.apple.iTunes and move them to the Trash.
    File Names should be:
    * com.apple.iTunes.eq.plist
    * com.apple.iTunes.plist
    * com.apple.iTunesHelper.plist
    5. Choose Go > Go to Folder and type in /Library and click Go.
    6. Locate the iTunes folder, and then move it to the Trash.
    7. Choose Go > Go to Folder and type in ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/ and click Go.
    8. Locate the preference files that have names beginning with com.apple.iTunes and move them to the Trash.
So I held my breath and launched iTunes on my newly installed system for the first time, and before I turned blue in the face, I notice that I did not see the "Accept License" window, and all my songs were in, ratings and selections and all! Even the podcasts began resuming downloads.
As for my iPhone, I noticed my Applications were already in too. I held my breath again and plugged it in, re-transferred my pictures right away in iPhoto, and it asked me if I wanted to back up my Applications from my iPhone, telling me if I didn't then they would be removed from my iPhone. Twist my arm, fine, I chose the option to back them up and it synced for a long time. It was an uncomfortable 20 minutes or so. (In fact, I'm writing this as it's about to finish.)
It ended up giving me a warning about how some apps were not authorized to be transferred to my computer, and gave me a list of 28 Apps (out of well over 100 on my iPhone). They weren't removed from my iPhone though! I synced again, and the same warning, so I selected Transfer, and this time no error at the end. I synced a third time, and no error messages!!!
I'm sure there are plenty of other places that might tell you the same information, but I couldn't find anything out there. Hopefully this will help someone. If anyone else has something to add or can offer any more advice on this, that would be nice too.

Both the iPhone & touch are designed to be synced with itunes on a regular basis. Neither are storage devices & not syncing is not only foolish, but as you've found out runs the risk of complete data loss. Purchased apps can be re-downloaded for free, as long as you use the same account that was used to originally purchase them. You can view your itunes purchase history under Store>View My Account>Purchase History. Music is a one time download. Its your responsibility to backup this content. You can try contacting itunes support regarding the lost music, plead your case & hope for the best. Whether they add the lost music to her download queue is strictly up to them:

  • Can data be recovered from a crashed HD?

My friend has an 3rd Gen iMac G5 (iSight) that appears to me the HD is out of. I can boot up with an external HD and go to Disk Utility and the internal HD does not show up. I tried resetting SMU and PRAM and other things before that with no luck. If the internal is indeed shot, can an expert recover anything form it, i.e. photos?

"internal HD does not show up."
Could be a sign of directory damage. The following should be used to repair:
    DiskWarrior
Highly recommended for *directory damage* repairs.
    TechTool Pro
    Multi-functional utility.
    Drive Genius Multi-functional utility.
You will need to make your own decision on which to purchase. Read up on them on their websites because each does something a little different.
You must use the versions that are compatible w/your OS system & keep the utilities updated to avoid damaging/harming/trashing your system.

  • LabVIEW crashes during editing sessions.

It seems almost inevitable that when I am editing a VI and forget to save it for longer than 10 minutes I will hear the hard drive come to life and then "LabVIEW has encountered a problem and will be closed" or some similar message is displayed.  This has happened far too many times.  Has anyone experienced a similar situation?  I'm trying to attach a screen shot of a similar crash; that doesn't seem to work either, what a surprise.

My gut feeling is that LabVIEW was up to something and stubbed its toe.  I'm not sure.  It's not like I had a whole bunch of other apps running.  I'll try again to attach a screen shot similar to the most recent crash.  The most recent crash actually generated a Windows error report.

  • Recover from a crashed NT server

I have orcale 8i installed on drive D: of an NT server. At some point my drive C: crashed and I had to replace it with a brand new drive and reinstall NT on it. I am at a point where I can see my drive D: with its oracle directory. Is there a way I can recover the tables or even better the full oracle installation.
    Thanks

Well that depends on what files you lost on the C: drive. Do you still have a control file?

  • Mail and Safari hang on exit after recover from disk crash

    Hi,
I had recently a disk crash on my powerbook. Fortunately the disk gave me enough time to save a disk image of my home folder before it died. Now, I have a new disk in, reinstalled Tiger, updated to 10.4.4. (as I had on the dead disk), copied the home folder from the backup, and fortunately most things work fine.
I had a system CRASH, while doing the first Spotlight search. I had a second system CRASH, while working in mail. So, I cleared the mail cache. After that, I had no crash anymore and even mail is working fine, until I decide to quit. It then hangs and I have to Force Quit to exit. Similar things happens to Safari.
I tried several things, e.g. removed the Envelope Index, but it always hangs on exit.
Any ideas what is going on? I wouldn't like to clear mails totally and reimport and reconfigure the whole thing from scratch.
    Any help is welcome,
    Thomas

Just in case somebody else runs into such a problem, here is the solution to my puzzle:
For security reasons (I have a Powerbook and I was worrying about private data in case of a theft...) my mailboxes and any sensitive information is kept on a FileVault disk image of an account I'm usually not using. Instead the FileVault encrypted disk image is mounted in my home folder. To have Mail use the different location I've put symbolic links (ln -s from the terminal).
Now the problem was, that after my disk crash, some of the directories had been lost, so the links pointed to nowhere. I've got aware on this by looking on the Finder's info on that link. The "More info..." was busy all the time. This means that symbolic links (not aliases!) that point to nowhere are not correctly handled by the Finder and probably by other applications).
Creating the folders the links pointed to solved the problem!
    Nice to know!

  • Prevent the scheduler from submitting jobs after recovering from a crash

    Hi,
I have a situation where I have set up secific jobs to run at 11:00 pm every night. These jobs should only run at this time and not during the day. These jobs typically run for about an hour. If my DBMS server is down at 11:00 pm, and when the server is subsequently brought back up the next day, i see that these jobs are submitted by the scheduler. How can I prevent this?
    Thanks,
    SV

    Hi,
The documented way of doing this is to set the schedule_limit attribute of the job. This sets a max interval after a scheduled job will not be run (just rescheduled).
However, you may run into a bug (#6331177) which prevents schedule_limit from taking effect after database downtime for a recurring job. As a possible workaround a job can query its own REQ_START_DATE and ACTUAL_START_DATE from the all_scheduler_running_jobs view and immediately exit if the difference exceeds some time limit (as it would in the case of database downtime).
    Hope this helps,
    Ravi.

  • WLI recovering from database crash

    Hi,
I have a BPM app, with the JMS server using the DB for message persistence..
If the database (Pointbase) crashes whilst there are still messages queued,
then when the database reappears the wliPool has to be manually
un/retargeted before the application continues processing the remaining
messages. Shouldn't the pool recover automatically?
    Cheers,
    SB

I assume that you have the refresh period set. And if so, then you should also
have a test table name set. I noticed that these are not set by default on the
wliPool -- so I added them in on my configuration. I haven't specifically tested
it -- but it should work.
