Recovering from a stolen PowerBook G4

My Powerbook was stolen two weeks ago. My homeowners insurance covered most of it and I replaced with a MacBook Pro.
I managed to get my ipod music copied over to the new machine - but the songs I paid for on iTunes won't sync to the ipod since they weren't originally bought on that machine.
Is there anything I can do here? I'd hate to have to buy my songs over again.

You will need to restore your iTunes songs from backups that you should have made. If you didn't make backups, such as burning your music library to CDs or DVDs, you may be out of luck. Purchases from the iTunes Store may be downloaded only once, per the terms of use.

Recovering from a stolen laptop.

Hi all,
I'm posting this on my wife's account, since she owns the iPod in question, yet I'm lumped with trying to fix the thing.
For the fourth time, we've been broken into and on this occasion lost the laptop to which her iPod (which was not stolen) was authorised and synchronised. So what we have now is the situation where we have an iPod full of content that we can't do a **** thing with.
So far I've done the following:
o Installed iTunes 9.0.2.25 on Windows 7,
o Authorised the iPod again with the original account,
o Synchronised the iStore content back into the Library (and this is the point of contention)
What I can't seem to do is to synchronise "all" content. This software only lets me bring back into the Library content that was purchased through the store. How on earth is this a practical solution? The majority of the content is from our cd collection and the likes, and it's not particularly practical to have to sit down ripping content for the next weeks to months ahead trying to reconstruct the library as it exists now on the iPod.
I'm aware that I can copy the content in its raw format from the iPod at the filesystem level, but I'm unsure if there's any value in this, since the directory and file naming structure is randomised. There wouldn't be much point in bringing a directory named "AszDg" back onto the computer. I'm assuming the filenames wouldn't be an issue, since they should contain metadata with the correct information in them. But if the directory name is used in something like the "Artist" column, then that's the kind of thing I'm concerned about.
Am I missing something, or is there no other option here except to let iTunes do as it suggests and wipe the entire iPod? So, in a nutshell, if you have either your laptop or pod stolen, thereby creating a decoupling of the authorisation process, does Apple leave you high and dry?

Are you saying you have reformatted a PC drive that is now connected or installed in your MBP or are you asking how to recover files on a reformatted drive in a PC? If the latter you would need to purchase recovery software that works on a PC. You cannot use OS X software to recover PC files on a PC formatted drive although you could give it a try. You would need recovery software for OS X:
General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten with recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

Much depends upon how you reformatted the drive. A standard full PC format (not a quick format) would render any data unrecoverable.

You have to reset the device to Factory Settings in order to restore it from an iCloud backup. You probably want to back it up as is before you do this.
To do the reset after you have backed up the current device, go to Settings>Reset>Reset all Content & Settings. This will erase the device. If you are signed onto iCloud with Find My iPhone turned on, go to Settings>iCloud and scroll to the bottom to sign out of iCloud before you do the reset.
Once you have reset your device, you will set it up like a new phone. When it asks if you want to restore it from an iCloud backup, select the backup you want to restore it from.

DVD Player encountered an error it could not recover from

When I try to play a disk that has been burned on a VCR/DVD combo machine, I very often get an error message that says:
"DVD Player encountered an error it could not recover from
There was an error reading from disc. It might be scratched or dirty. [-36]"
and then it quits. Sometimes I have been able to play a disc, after several tries, as it errors later and later, but also sometimes not.

Because you have no access to the device you cannot download a thing. You can lock it so no one can use it without completely erasing it or you can erase it to prevent any access. It would be as a new device. If you do this it cannot be tracked.

I may have bought a stolen Powerbook

I have two questions but first some background.
I am beginning to suspect that I unknowingly bought a stolen Powerbook. I'm pursuing this problem with the online auction company while doing my best to collect information. There is a bunch of music on the hard drive of this computer and it doesn't appear to belong to the person who sold the unit to me. I have the music owner's account name because if I double click on a song, it shows me the screen account name and asks me for the former owner's password to play it. Obviously, I don't have that password.
Question one, is there any way to contact a person through their iTunes screen name? Question two, assuming I'm being paranoid and the problems I'm having with the seller are innocent, what happens if I follow the "Deauthorize this computer" command and can I deauthorize it without the person's password? I've been afraid to follow the command past the first page for fear of erasing some useful trail of information. TIA

And how would a local police department know if a Powerbook was stolen?
They can check nationwide lists of reported stolen property and/or check with Apple to see if Apple's received any reports. Apple may, upon request from a valid law enforcement authority, be able to trace the owner of the iTunes Music Store account to verify legal ownership. They won't do that for any private citizen, though, only for police.
It's up to you want you want to do. If you're truly concerned, you should follow the proper procedure. Note that if the PowerBook is indeed stolen and you don't report it, you could be held liable for receiving stolen property should the sale ever be traced to you.
This is one reason why purchasing from online sources can be risky. There is a lot of stolen property that gets sold through online auctions.

How to recover from network port configuration deletion (airport)

a couple of years ago, i accidently deleted the network port configuration for AirPort in the Show pop-up menu. No big deal, i thought at the time. I don't have an AirPort card and I won't be using AirPort in this computer. Ok, I now have an old-style AirPort card (powerbook G3 firewire, 10.2.8) and the AirPort utility doesn't see that it's installed. I realized right away, the network doesn't have a port... so the system doesn't see it, right? So, how do I get this port back? Do I have to reload a new System entirely and not save previous network settings... or is there an easier way to recover from my blunder?

Glad to be here. Yeah, 10.2 works the same as 10.4. The problem with what you suggest is that I can no longer get airport as an option in Network port configs... so when I go to the new button all the other options are there EXCEPT AirPort. This is what I need to restore. I haven't checked, but I'm assuming I've nuked the pref panel out of the master library. So, I've messed up big time. I was looking for a way to recover that didn't involve reloading the whole system. This isn't like OS 9 and older where you can go and pick a little piece and stick it back into your system folder... I think. Thanks for the reply.

Can't recover from sleep sometimes: "Oh no! Something has gone wrong!"

I'm running gdm + gnome-shell (force fallback mode) on a Thinkpad W520 with intel integrated graphics only (via bios setting, so no optimus). Once a week or so, my Laptop fails to go to sleep properly and to recover from it.
It basically works like this, normally when I close the lid, the sleep LED blinks a couple of times, and then stays on (and you can hear the fan turn off). When sending the laptop to sleep fails, the led blinks indefinitely (like, all night, if you let it), the fan keeps running as well.
Once you open the lid again, you are greeted with the message "ACPI: Unable to dock!" on a black screen. This happens when successfully recovering from sleep mode as well, though.
Shortly afterwards, instead of seeing a password prompt, you see this:

Can I transfer music and photos from my 17" PowerBook G4 to a new MacBook Pro?

I am planning to buy a new MacBook Pro in the next couple of weeks. Can I have the "Genius" at the Apple Store transfer my music and pictures from my current PowerBook to the new computer? My current computer is a 17" PowerBook G4, running OS X 10.5.8. Because of the age of my computer and software limitations I have been unable to use iCloud for anything besides my calendar and contacts.

Yes, flash drive would work fine.
If all you care about is music and photos, as you indicated earlier, then you simply need to copy the entire contents of your Music and Pictures folders from the old computer into the Music and Pictures folders on the new computer. A flash drive will work fine as long as it is big enough. If you want to also move over personal files, typically those are in your Documents folder and possibly your Desktop, so don't forgot about those.
If you want to migrate over all your emails, applications, internet and router settings, web browser favorites, bookmarks, preferences, user names and accounts, etc., then you might consider doing the full migration using Setup Assistant upon the very first boot up. Apple will do this for you, for a fee, as will almost any Apple-authorized computer store (also for a fee, but probably for a bit less than Apple would charge). You can actually do this manually, using the external drive or flash drive, and I have done that myself. But you need to know where the files are to do that properly. The Setup Assistant (which is run upon the very first boot up of the new computer) or Migration Assistant (which is run after you have booted into your new computer at least once) make it pretty easy -- the main thing you need to do is hook the computers up with a firewire cable and follow Apple's instructions; or if that is not possible, the next best thing is to make a complete backup of your old computer onto an external drive using Time Machine (or a cloning program like SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner) and migrate from the backup.

Need to move Mailboxes from an old Powerbook to a new desktop iMac G5.

I already asked on some discussion group but somehow lost it and have to re enter my question.
I have an old Powerbook G4 that I had to use for a few months but now have my new iMac G5 desktop Intel Core and need to copy all the Mail in mailboxes onto a flash drive so I can then have it as an archive backup but also be able to copy it to the new computer. Thanks for any advice given.
