Recovering from Abrupt Power-down

Help! My son powered off my computer and
now when I try to start Oracle (8.1.6) from
the dbstart script I get the following
message:
Starting Oracle8i: Database "domaindb" already started.
Database "domaindb" possibly left running when system went down (system crash?).
Notify Database Administrator.
I don't knwo how to recover from this.
Any thoughts?

Start the database using sqlplus
# export ORACLE_SID=domaindb
sqlplus /nolog
connect sys as sysdba
startupSundar

MAC MINI LATE 2012 UNEXPECTED POWER DOWN

Hi all,
I got a mac mini late 2012 (Stock RAM 4GB and Stock HDD 500GB) a month back in India . Last night had some colony of ants marching towards my mac mini and crawling inside from under the lid. I tried to get rid of all of 'em. Now since last night my mac mini abruptly powers down be it either during use or be it in sleep mode. I am afraid if the warranty is void since there are some more ants roaming inside. Also when it powers down abruptly, I don't get any notifications on the same on my screen. It fails to recognise when I press the power button to restart it again. I had to unplug the power cord from behind, switch off the main socket power supply and then had to plug it again and start my mac mini to restart it. And when it restarts it shows no sign of any notification for abrupt power down. Request someone to help me on the same. Majorly I'm concerned with my warranty. Thanks in advance to all those ppl out here in this forum to help me on this ..

Okay.. I went to apple service point today morning.. The executive took my Mac mini and told me that they'll clean it completely .. Waited for 2 hours .. Came out with my Mac mini and told me that they had cleaned it .. But when I reached back home I was happy until I saw two of those tiny little suckers crawling up on my Mac mini again..opened the lid of the Mac mini from bottom and saw a bunch of them .. Called up the service centre again .. Blasted at him.. He asked me to drop in to the service point again.. Let's see.. Hopefully expecting a good result while I return back from the service centre tomorrow atleast. These tiny little creatures are driving me crazyyyy !!!

If there are multiple apps trying to download at once, only one can download at a time and the rest say "Waiting" until it is then their turn. Try this. Double tap the icon of the Waiting app, and it should resume the download.

Another thing to try - Turn the iPad Off & then back ON.
If that doesn't work:
• Log out of your iTunes store account. Go to Settings > Store > Sign Out Then press the Home button.
• Then press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously and don't release them when it brings up the Turn Off screen; keep holding them until the Apple logo appears.
• After restart, the Waiting should be gone.

I set the prefferance to show tabs and windows from last session but every time i power down my firefox or my Mac all my app tabs and windows disapear. what's wrong with my settings.

If you restored to factory settings/new iPod via iTunes (Not via Settings>General>Reset>Erase all Content and Setting) and still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem.

Sometimes (about 60% of the time) when I shut-down or restart the computer normally, it retsarts saying it has recovered from an error. I have nothing opening at login, and I have checked everything in the Disk Ultility... all seems ok.

It's a strange little anomaly, computer seems to work fine, never crashes, all programs are running fine, but when I do a restart or a shutdown it restarts with the "recovering from an error..." message. It happens all the time, even if I've opened nothing (just started up and then shutdown, [I have nothing starting up at login]). I have checked all the permissions and verified the disk... Everything checks out ok. Only 'non-legit' program or app I have is the VLC player, but I don't see how that could affect the shutdown or restart process.

Forcing a shutdown can cause hard drive directory corruption. You should start from the install disc and repair the disk with Disk Utility.
When other methods don't work, holding the power button to force a shutdown is the only way. You can try control-F12 (opens the Restart, Sleep, Shutdown dialog box) and then press return to shutdown or control-command-F12 (quit all applications and restart).
If just one application is hanging try using Force Quit (command-option-esc). That will also work to force quit the Finder if it hangs.

Can the IOS be made so you have to give your pw on phone power down. This would prevent from shutting the phone down if lost or stolen so find iphone will still work.

It could probably be done, but then the complaints would pile up asking "Why, oh why does Apple make me enter my password to SHUT MY PHONE OFF. APPLE, ARE YOU LISTENING?"
it also won't solve the problem, because there are many ways to disable Find my iPhone other than shutting it off:
Wrap in aluminum foil
Drop in a shoplifter's bag or backpack with a metal screen lining (Faraday shield)
Remove the SIM
Restore the phone

Why do I get "The system has recovered from a serious error" after system shut down

Every time when start/restarting the computer using the attached .vi I get a window with "The system has recovered from a serious error." Although this does not seems to have any effect on application and I am able to use the test equipment but could someone explain why this is happening?

IF not zero THEN use ErrorCode ELSE use zero
Why not just connect errorcode directly with BundleByName? You don't need the Select function here...

New iMac abrupt power loss/shutdown

I had my brand new, factory spec, 20' iMac set up & running for about 10 minutes before I tried playing a CD with itunes. When I pressed play the mac unexpectedly shutdown as if the power had been cut. I thought it may have been due to using a multi-socket plug so connected it directly to the wall outlet with the same result.
Other CDs & DVDs worked fine so I figured there was something wrong with that disc & carried on. Later I attempted to install a game it got to about 50% complete before the abrupt shut down, I tried another 2 times with the same results.
Finally I tried installing Leopard, the machine restarted as intended then after about 15 seconds of starting the install the mac again shutdown. Again I attempted the same thing a couple more times with identical results.
Has anyone else experienced the same problem, or has any ideas on what may be causing it & how to possibly fix it?

I too have been having random shutdowns occur while working - I seem to be able to repeat it by filling up the clipboard with large items cut from photos, and otherwise running photo shop with lots of image processing going on. I called mac support on this, and all they could identify was that I was getting hi mem tramps as a message on reboot. But, otherwise have yet to provide a fix.
This has been occurring out of the box since I got it in September. Annoying as I get dinged in the middle of my work.
Check your sys logs on the next boot up and see what you have there. Wonder if its due to bad RAM.

Why does my MacBook abruptly shut down shortly after being wakened?

This has just begun happening within the past two days; I've used my MacBook every day since 8/10 without problems. When I wake it from Sleep it abruptly shuts down either within a few seconds, or while I'm connecting to the internet, or at least within minutes of waking it. No Application needs to be or usually is running. Power cord and external modem are the only connects. My last third party download a few days ago was the latest update of Stuffit Expander. Apple Hardware Test shows no problems. I can start it back up by pressing the power button for five seconds or by Command/Control->press Power button but it sometimes shuts down again within seconds. What's the problem? TIA.

You should do a backup as soon as you can, since most people report that once the problem starts, it gets worse until the machine may become completely inoperable. And there's a chance that the hard drive will be wiped during repair.
Apparently most, if not all, Apple Stores will send it in for repair rather than do it in the store. I had my repair done by contacting AppleCare directly. They will send you a shipping box, and you pack your machine and send it in. This, and return shipping, is via overnight shipping, DHL or FedEx, in the U.S. The time to repair depends on availability of parts. Mine was done in 48 hours; others report delays of weeks.

Iphone cant recover from a lost of service

I am in canada, my Iphone sometimes lost the carrier signal and a "no service" message appear at the top left corner. The thing is the phone seems unable to recover from it even if I move to a full signal strengh location. I need to do a full hardware power off/on (holding the button) for the signal to come back. This is happening on my wife iphone too and all my friends with iphone have this problem too. the thing is its also happening with multiple service carriers (telus, Bell, fido, ...)
This looks a lot like Iphone software bug to me. That makes me think AT&T is NOT the problem in the US, its the phone.

Carrier was initially set at the Telus store and an carrier update happen when I sync it on Itunes. Its always set on Telus, I dont see any manual/auto settings. I was saying in my initial post that it happen on multiple carriers because my friends with iphones are on Bell and Fido and they also have the same problem. I even saw one of my friend phone went from 5 bars signal to no service while it was just standing there on a desk.
The problem happen yesterday. I set it to airplane mode then set airplane mode off and after that it search for a signal and found it. At least I dont have to reboot it anymore.
Also, the iphone is not very good at picking up signal inside buildings has other phones with the same carrier will pick up 5 bars while the iphone will be go down to 2 for example.

Recovering from lockups

How do you recover from program lock ups without pressing the on-off button?

If an application is locked, there's a simple way to close it without turning off your Mac holding down the Power button. Just press Alt, Command and Esc keys (or go to  > Force Quit), so you will see the "Force Quit" window. Then, just select the locked application and force quit it
