Recovering from resolution selection that won't display

my intel mac mini arrived today. setup, including transfer of info from prior machine was a breeze. connected it via HDMI to a Sharp LCD. to explore which resolutions might display best, I clicked one that was displayed in the list but which I soon discovered was NOT compatible with the LCD TV. Now only display is "Signal Not Compatible." When I reboot, I see the usual apple startup in the TV's default resolution, but once it is started to switches to that incompatible resolution. But then of course I can't open the Display panel and change anything. A real catch-22!
I am able to startup in single user mode (holding down command-S at startup) and look around in the Library/Preferences and elsewhere. Is there a plist to delete that will stop the switching to the incompatible signal?

that worked. I knew to get rid of
/Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist
but I hadn't found and removed
~username/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.windowserver.xxxx.plist
because looking in the ByHost directory hadn't occured to me. I was looking for the windowserver files in ~username/Library/Preferences
and one can find and delete these files using either single user mode or by using terminal in safe boot.
In any case, I'm back in business. Thanks for all the help!
Uh, this seems a problem that lots of more naive users are going to run into when they buy a mac mini for the media center. Without being comfortable with basic unix, this would be a difficult problem for the typical hom user to fix.

I have a 5th gen that won't display any video out. I've tried 2 different splitter cables out of the earphone jack. I've tried plugging the RCA cables into different colors on the tv. Thought it was just a problem with the cables until tonight when I got a Sonic Impact V55. Video won't display on it either. I have the TV setting to ask. After it asks and I say yes, I get a picture of an Ipod cable connector and a message saying: TV OUT
    ENABLED Please Connect Video Accessory.
This message happens on both splitter cables and using the dock connection on the V55. I've restored, reset, nothing has helped.
I did see a couple of posts regarding the V55 and whether the 5th gen would work on it. Does anyone have a v55 that the ipods working with? Heck the box says it works with Ipod 5th gen.

It goes trough the place where you put youre dock conector in (on the bottom)
Yes it does, on the 5th generation (pre-Classic) models, the video does indeed feed out the headphone jack (as well as out the dock connector on the bottom).

How do you know they won't run in Yosemite? You're not trying to fiddle with stuff in your backup from the Finder, are you? If so you are likely to render that backup unusable.
WHen when you restore them from your backup, they should be updateable.

  • Is there a way to recover your files from a computer that won't work anymore?

if my computer stops working, is there a way to recover the files?

I've been in the same situation once.
    Here's what I did:
Went to Staples and bought an external hard drive enclosure.
Took the hard drive out of the dead computer then installed it in the enclosure.
From there I hooked it up to a working computer via usb port then copied the files that I needed from it.
Assuming that your hard drive is not dead/toasted, then you can recover the data you need through this procedure.
    Hope that helps.

  • Images from 2nd local site won't display in Firefox

I'm including images from one local website on another local

  • How do I get files from an App that won't send via Email??

Hey Apple Community, this is my first post.
I got an App from the App Store called "Recorder Pro" from a developer called "David Bajada". I'm using this App for recording my commentaries for my YouTube channel from my iPad.  The problem is, it's 60 minutes long, and it won;t send by Mail when I click the "Share" button.  Now, I know there has to be some sort of way to get that Audio file off my iPad.  Is there any programs or software that can do this for me?  Or is it embedded to the iPad and can't be taken off/used?
    Please help,
    Thanks

The App I have only has a "Share" button; which is linked to the "Mail" App that's on the iPad.  Problem is, that's the only way of sharing the file, through the Mail App.  The problem is, the file is too big and long to share via mail.  There has to be some someftware to extract that audio file from that App because it only supports sharing through Mail

  • How to restore from hard drive that won't boot?

My Macbook Pro recently started hanging at the grey boot screen, and the hard drive was replaced under Applecare. I've got the old hard drive in a USB enclosure now, and everything on it seems to be readable despite it refusing to boot from this hard drive. Disk utility reports no problems. Is there a way to restore the files and applications from the old hard drive onto the new hard drive? I presume I can't just make a new time machine backup from the old hard drive and restore that?

  • Photos saved from Mail to iPhoto won't display

I recently converted my niece from a PC to an new 14 inch iBook. She has 10.4.2 and all the latest software updates. When she clicks on the "Save" button in Mail her photos do not appear in iPhoto. After proving to myself this was really happening, I found the missing photos. They are being saved at the root level in the iPhoto folder-not in the respective photo folders. I suspect that this is the problem but I don't know why or how to fix it. I tried saving photos from Mail on a couple of other Macs at my house and the feature seems to work fine.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Hi Joseph, the feature works fine for me too.
the only info I could find was this.
"Add to iPhoto" button in Mail and keyword search in spotlight don't work
If she does have the latest iPhoto, then all I can suggest is to use Disk Utility to repair permissions. If that doesn't work, then just have her drag the images in the email to the desktop, then import them into iPhoto from there.

my iphone 3gs has frozen up.  i turned it off for a flight today and when i turned it on to listen to some music the apple logo comes up and never goes away.  also, when i got home to attempt a synch to itunes and to see if a synch would fix the problem, neither the computer (windows) nor itunes will recognize the phone.  i have attempted to reboot it several times, i rebooted the computer, i removed the SIM card and reinserted it and nothing is resolving this problem. any ideas or proposed solutions?

Try a hard shut down by holding the power button down (one on top) and the home screen button down at the same time. After 5-10 seconds the phone should shut off.
