Recovering hard drive for Satellite M35X-S161

My hard drive totally died on me earlier this week in the process of trying to back it up to an external drive. None of my data was saved.
I have installed a new hard drive, but HAVE TO have the data from my old one. I've put the old drive in an external enclosure and it 'seems' to work, but it only shoews 2 folders a a few files with gibberish for names. It also says my 60 gig drive is only 10 megs in size.
I'm really in trouble here, can anyone help?

If you google 'data recovery services' you'll find several companies that can recover data from failed hard drives.  The process is expensive - a friend of mine was charged about $1000 - and there aren't any guarantees that all of your data will be recovered.
Good luck.

  • Replacement Hard Drive for Satellite 4090 XCDT

I have a Satellite 4090 XCDT which needs a new hard drive, I am trying to find out if the laptop/BIOS can support a 20 GB hard drive (Toshiba Mk-2018GAS), can anyone help me?
Also upto what size will it support?

    Hi Steve
I can not give you precise information about 20GB HDD but I know that 8GB HDD will be recognized by BIOS and it will work properly. A friend of mine has 4100XCDT and it works with 20GB HDD without any problem.
My opinion is that you should pick up some information by service partner or Google a little bit around and I am sure that you can find HDD vendor that can give you right information. I know that it is possible to built in HDD`s with high capacity to older machines but how it exactly works I can not explain you.

I had files stored on a hard drive that were not on my Mac. I used the hard drive for my first Time Machine back up, but it was not enough hard drive space to finish. Now those stored files are gone. Is there any way I can recover them?  No, they were not part of previous Time Machine backups, and I have checked both the hard drive the documents were lost on and the new one that I now use for backups. Any suggestions would be helpful, as the lost files are old pictures that are gone forever. :[ Thanks!

    1. Yes, if both drives are formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    2. Reformat the drives if needed, open the Time Machine pane of System Preferences, and remove the drive with the pictures from the list of items set to be excluded.

  • I have a 250GB western digital external hard drive for my time machine backups. if i just want to backup and recover my photos and movies how do i do that with time machine?

I have a 250GB western digital external hard drive for my time machine backups. I did not download the software that came with the external HD. If I only want to backup my photos and movies from my Macbook how do I do that in Tme Machine with my external HD?

Format the HDD in Disk Utility>Erase to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and the open System Preferences>Time Machine and set up the external disk as the Time Machine HDD.  Then look at the Options, and exclude what you do not want backed up.
    Ciao.

Make sure the EHD is formatted OS X Extended (journaled) and run Disk Utilty on the EHD and repair the disk.  If that fails to help I'd try the following:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the external HD as the location of the newly rebild library.
    Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Recommended external hard drive for R&R?

I just got my new T420 and I want to get an external hard drive for Rescue & Recovery backups. I used R&R to back up and recover all the time with my old T60, but it's too small. I'm looking at a couple of Seagate hard drives. Does anyone know if I need to re-format the external hard drive to get rid of any software on it before using R&R? Or does it even matter? Any experience with Seagate for R&R backups?

Just get a large enough drive. I recommend a drive or drive enclosure that supports eSATA for fast backup speeds.

  • New WiFi Ext Hard Drive for Tablets + PB

I came across this WiFi External Hard Drive that can stream data (Movies/Music/Files) to the PlayBook:.
This works with the PlayBook as mentioned at another PB Forum.
Your media library, as mobile as your tablet or smartphoneThe GoFlex Satellite device goes wherever your iPad or Android tablet goes and lets you wirelessly access all your movies, photos, music and documents. No more worrying about running out of space on your mobile device.

The Seagate GoFlex Satellite is not so new anymore, but I just purchased one after some procrastination.  It has however provided more flexibility than I thought....it can upload files using the pb browser from the pb to the Flex.   A few limitations, such as, you can only upload one file at a time.  This will be annoying to folks that want to upload a photo album.
I was having difficulty opening documents such as .doc and .pdf files.  I discovered that it works when a password is assigned to the GoFlex....seems to conflict with the hotspot login screen.  Alternatively, I was able to make it work by opening a second browser screen.  It needs to save the file before it will automatically start the pb native doc or pdf reader.
Various video file types such as avi, m4v, wmv, mp4 play for me with excellent quality.
I also downloaded the android app for my Samsung Tablet 10.1.  The app provides a bit more functionality but more limited in the video files it will play.
So at the moment, this is the best alternative to a usb storage device on a pb.  The Flex is perhaps redundant for my Samsung tablet, because there is a usb adapter for it....I believe it is the only tablet with usb storage functionality.  I have the adapter and it works well.

  • Recovering Hard Drive Space?

    Hi all,
I was wondering if there's a way to recover hard drive space after emptying the trash?
My macbook tells me that I have 1.39Gb of free space, so I went around deleting some videos, and then empty the trash.
However, I checked how much free space I have left, it's still 1.39Gb after emptying the trash, and I'm sure I've deleted around 10Gb worth of videos.
However, I notice that if I log out and then log back in, I get the space back.
I was wondering if I could recover the hard drive space without actually logging out.
    Thanks in advance~

Operating with such a small amount of free space is quite dangerous and can result in directory corruption. I recommend you start be repairing your hard drive and permissions:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Normally you need at least 10 GBs or 15% of the hard drive's capacity as free space whichever is greater. Too little free space is hazardous to your hard drive's health and will cause OS X to run slower. If you are running out of space then you need a larger hard drive.

  • How can I use one external hard drive for both Time Machine and iPhoto Library?

I have been using a 1 TG LaCie external hard drive for Time Machine backups.  My (older) Mac has 160 GB and is almost full.  I would like to move my iPhoto Library to the external hard drive, but I've heard Time Machine doesn't share one space well.  Should I
    1.  create another partition (but will this erase what I've already saved) with Disk Utility?  *I am running Snow Leopard*
    2.  create another volume to use for iPhoto, and if so, should the two volumes be of equal size?
    3.  leave it with one partition and move the iPhoto Library to the same partition with Time Machine back ups?
I know I don't need the entire 1 TG for back up of 160 GBs.  Please advise the best path to take.  Thank you!

You are getting incorrect information from your ASP. If you look at drive specifications the heat generated is no different for high vs low capacity drives.
I have upgraded the internal drive in my iMac 2007 with a 3TB Hitachi drive without any heat issues or other problems.
Larger hard drives have higher density platters so to access any given amount data the drives travel a shorter distance. Higher capacity drives should therefore run cooler than lower density drives because the drive spends less time spinning to access data.

  • Can I format and use a Hard Drive for my mac if removed from a Desk Top PC

    Hi All,
I wondered if you can help with some advise. I have a mackbook and love it, will never go back to pc. But, I have a desk top pc with a fairly sizable Hard Drive in it. Even though I also have a WD external Hard Drive for my macbook back up, would I be able to use my old desk top hard drive if I found a case for it to make it an 2nd external hard drive?
Would I be able to format it for use with my mac? Or is it the bin for all the hardware?
    Thanking you in advance.
    Matt

It'd work just fine. Apple uses pretty much the exact same parts every other computer maker does. The one exception is now they have a temp sensor cable connection built onto drives. Before they just stuck a little plastic clip on them at a specific spot. Other than that, it's no different from any other SATA drive you might buy at the likes of Best Buy or NewEgg. So as long as you partition the drive into a format readable by Mac OS X, there shouldn't be any problems.
