Recovering iChat history

Is there a way that I can recover my iChat history if I deleted the imessage?

Hi,
Possibly.
You list only an iPhone  and then not one that can run the latest iOS versions.
You then talk about iChat ( an App from OS X on Macs in Lion (OS X 10.7.x or earlier)
iMessages suggests either iPhone or Mountain Lion or Mavericks on a computer.
If it is the iPhone you may get the conversation back IF you have made some sort of Backup.
This could be iCloud based or iTunes based.
It will then depend on what you have added since the deletion as to whether backstepping to the Backup is worthwhile.
If it is a Mac version this too will need a Backup such a Time Machines.
In the Finder use the Go Menu whilst holding donw the ALT key.
Select the Library that appears.
Navigate to Messages.
Depending on whether you have Mountain Lion or Mavericks then you might have the Archive folder in here.
Use the Dock icon to launch Time Machine.
It will give you the same window but shrunk to stack older version "behind" it against the galaxy background pic.
Navigate back in time with the arrows.
Once you have  gone back to the date on the deletion the highlight the Chat.db items and use the Restore Button.

Is there a way to recover deleted history for Safari on an iPad2?

If it was on your iPad when you last backed up then you can try restoring to that backup - you will need to restore the whole iPad, you can't just restore a single app. Otherwise no, you can't recover it

  • I've clicked 'forget about this site', can I undo this by running the 'system restore' feature to recover my history?

I accidentally clicked 'forget about this site' and I'm looking for a way to undo this. I've heard there is no way to recover the history from a particular site once it has been deleted, but surely it leaves some kind of record in the system? I read an article that suggested running the 'system restore' feature which gives me the option of 'restoring my computer to an earlier time' before certain changes were made. Would this work?

no, updating the browser won't have an impact on your history - all your personal data will remain.
a general tip if you want to avoid data loss/highly depend on this data, is to back-up your firefox profile regularly: [[Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles]]

  • Recovering erased history on Safari

    Hi,
Is there some way to recover the history of web sites visited after someone has cleared it through Safari>History>Clear History? Or some other way to view what web sites were visited and when. Thanks so much.

did you ever get an answer to your question? I'm also trying to retrieve my history.

  • Following download of version 23.0.1 I lost all previous history but not bookmarks. How do I recover old history? Recovery in "import and backup" does not help

My remembered and retained history was going back quite a few months. Following update of Firefox to 23.0.1 I lost all my history and Firefox only retains websites visited after the new version was installed. My bookmarks have been retained. I tried Recover in "Import and backup" but it only goes back to the date of the new installation. I tried places.sqlite in "Roaming" but there is only one with today's date. Is there a way to recover the lost history? Why did Firefox lose it? Will it happen averytime Firefox updates?

Backup your bookmarks manually. If you have been using the "import" you may have already lost some information by overwriting it. As a matter of course you should always save current bookmarks manually before using any restores.
    * [[Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer]]
That way you can ensure you are able to restore the complete current set. Put your .json backup file somewhere safe outside Firefox program or profile paths. The Windows Desktop or removable media would be suitable.
Firefox does create some autobackups of bookmarks but does not do anything about backing up the History. Luckily Windows probably backs up previous versions of your file ''places.sqlite'' and that is the database with History and bookmarks in it. See if you can recover a recent version of that, it will restore your history up to the date of the restored file.
    * http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Previous-versions-of-files-frequently-asked-questions
    * the file ''places.sulite'' is in the Firefox profile, a hidden folder that is easy to find by using troubleshooting. see [[Profiles - Where Firefox stores your bookmarks, passwords and other user data#w_how-do-i-find-my-profile]]_how-do-i-find-my-profile
Afterwards import your more recent bookmarks from wherever they were saved. The import overwrites the slightly older bookmarks from the Windows file.
You my also then wish to install and run the addon places maintenance.
    * https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/places-maintenance/
That may be used to check and repair the places.sqlite database. It will give a short status report. Note if the places.sqlite runs out of space it starts deleting History.
In future you my wish to routinely create occasional backups of your profile or at least your places.sqlite

  • How do I recover my history after a crash?

I've had firefox crash twice in the past week which of course deletes all bookmarks and history. Because of the way Firefox is with everything hidden in places.sqlite they are difficult to recover. They give you backup of bookmarks, but not of history. Is there any addon or any way of retrieving history? I made a backup of the old profile and started new for now. I tried sqlite browser, but it doesn't work on places.sqlite. I tired renaming the corrupt file and deleting the others. No luck. How do I get history back?

Sry about it. Yes history is stored in places.sqlite

  • Restore ichat history after system restore

Haven't found a usable solution to this problem yet, so help is greatly appreciated.
How do you restore all of your iMessage (iChat) conversations after retiring your Mac to an earlier point in time.  Specifically, I used Time Machine to return my iMac  to OS X 10.10.1.  Was at 10.10.3 (beta 2).  When I launch Messages, conversations are present as they were during the TM backup of 10.10.1.  So from this point I wish to return all the documents, photos, music, messages, etc. to the point prior to the system restore (10.10.3 b2).  Everything can be restored by use of TM for the folders, Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures.  But I can not get messages to restore.
Used various methods seen on various forums,  i.e. use TM and restore ~/Library/Messages; /com.apple.iChat,  but to no avail..  Tried various combinations of logging out/in of massages; iCloud, restarting the computer,  again with no avail.  I usually end up with all of the list of those that I sent a message to but no messages.
I believe there is some magical, specific order in which to do this successfully.  I haven't found it yet.
    HELP!
    & Thx

    Hi,
I have not delved deep enough to say which item actually holds the list of active Chats or Conversations in the side bar.
The chat.db item itself is the one that hold the "history" that shows up when your start a chat with someone you have chatted to before in iMessages.
You need to have Saved Chats  in the Archive folder for this to work with AIM, Jabber, Yahoo and Bonjour Buddies.
Apple's own documentation tends to refer to iMessages as Conversations and any other account as Chats.
The exception now being SMS/text which the app Links to iMessages.
If you just Restore the whole computer to the last day you ran OS X 10.10.1 then it should have all the Chats/Conversations you were having that day.
However changing them by effectively Importing the newer ones (those up to the last time you used OS X 10.10.3beta) will upset things.

  • How to recover mail history of an accidentally deleted account

    Hi
I accidentally deleted a mail account and all its history.  the history is not available from the mail account server.  I don't seem to be able to recover it using Time machine recovery.  I think the only way is to try and recover the deleted mail history file but have no idea how to do this.  Is it possible for me to do this or do I need to take my imac to a specialist third party?
    Thanks

It all depends on the type of account and how it was configured. For IMAP-type accounts, mail is stored on the server, and setting up the account again is all that’s needed to regain access to your mail.
If you deleted a POP account, however, then all your mail stored locally in that account’s mailboxes has certainly been wiped out, not just moved somewhere, and you were warned that this would happen by the following alert:
    Remove Account
Are you sure you want to remove the <AccountType> account "<AccountName>"?
This will permanently delete the account setup information, mailboxes, and messages from your computer. Messages stored on the mail server will not be affected.
If the POP account was configured to leave mail on the server for some time instead of removing it right away when downloaded, incoming mail that’s still on the server can be re-downloaded by setting up the account again, just like for IMAP accounts, but keep in mind that this would only work for received (i.e. not sent) mail that has not yet been removed from the server.
If the messages are not on the server, and you don’t have a backup, your only option in the case of Mail 2.x is to try to salvage as many deleted *.emlx files as possible with a data recovery tool such as Data Rescue II, TechTool Pro, or FileSalvage (the files to be recovered would be different in the case of Mail 1.x). Of these, the only one I know for sure that can recover deleted *.emlx files is FileSalvage. Stop using your computer right now if you want to try that, as anything you do with the computer may cause the deleted files to be overwritten.

Is there a way to repair , fix or recover places.sqlite and back to normal again in mozilla? PLS HELP
    Sorry for my ENG

    Hi
I meeting this problem too, but you can to save all possible data from corrupted places.sqlite. Here is the solution I came to (step-by-step):
    1. Download sqlite3.exe executable from "http://www.sqlite.org/download.html".
    2. Create "SQlite" folder in your FireFox profile.
    3. Unpack sqlite3.exe to "SQlite" folder.
    4. Create three batch files in "SQlite" folder:
    1. sqlite-check.cmd
    sqlite3 ..\places.sqlite "PRAGMA integrity_check;"
    @PAUSE
    2. sqlite-dump.cmd
    sqlite3 ..\places.sqlite.corrupt .dump > places.bak
    3. sqlite-restore.cmd
    sqlite3 ..\places.sqlite < places.bak
    5. Give name "places.sqlite.corrupt" to your "places.sqlite" file. It can be already renamed by FireFox.
    6. Delete "places.sqlite", "places.sqlite-shm", "places.sqlite-wal" files (all "places.sqlite*" except "places.sqlite.corrupt").
    7. Run FireFox, it will create empty "places.sqlite", and close FireFox.
    8. Run "2. sqlite-dump.cmd", it will save all possible data from "places.sqlite.corrupt" to "SQlite\places.bak".
    9. Run "3. sqlite-dump.cmd", it will recover all saved data from "SQlite\places.bak" to an empty "places.sqlite".
    10. Run "1. sqlite-check.cmd" it will check integrity of the "places.sqlite" and must write "OK".
    11. Run FireFox. If all fine, files "SQlite\places.bak" and "places.sqlite.corrupt" can be deleted.

  • How do I recover download history that has not been deleted from but is no longer in my downloads browser window?

I downloaded edited versions of a document from an online school a while ago. They are no longer available on the website I downloaded them from, and that was the ONLY location they were available. I checked the window that logs down my downloads, but the documents were no longer there. Is there any way to recover those downloads?
This is really important to me, so thanks for any advice.
    Myst
    ~X~

If the page no longer exists you have probably lost the information, unless you deliberatly saved the webpage (yourself manually; by working 'offline', or some sort of archive extension) to your computer. That is something you need to do if you expect a webpage to change. Your bookmarks or history only point you back at the webpage, they are not the information from that webpage.
There are two possibilities you could try '''but''' this only works for any original material, not anything you edited yourself.
    * '''Offline''' if you use '''file -> work offline ''' . Then if you try the URL you have whilst offline, if firefox does have a cached copy it may load.
    * '''Web Cache''', some pages get archived elsewhere on the web, google for instance stores current or sometimes older versions of sites as a cache copy, look for the item on google and if you see an alternative link marked 'cached' &/or 'Similar' try clicking on them.
If you are lucky and find the information remember to immediately use File -> save page as , and make a copy for your computer.

  • Ability to recover Safari history once cleared?

My darling child has figured out how to clear the internet history. Is there a way to either block this feature (using a password?), recover the cleared items, or maybe hide the tab?

    Multiple Accounts.
Give your child his/her own, non admin account and only permit them to use that account. Do not use that account for any of your business. That way, the only clearing the child can do is from that account. This is done in System Preferences/Accounts.
Mac OS X is a multiple user OS. Use that feature. Do not use the Administrator account as your main account unless you are sure you understand the level of access an Administrator has in a Unix OS. It's a bit like locked doors...they can be a hassle, but they give considerable safety.

  • How to recover safari history from time machine?

    Hi guys,
I need your help ... I use time machine for the backup and I cancelled the history of Safari few days ago and now I need to recover it.
Where and how can I find it among the time machine files?
I have already read some suggestions in the web that told me to find it in the user/Library/Safari/History but I can't find any Safary folder in my Library :-(
    Many thanks in advance

Triple-click the text on the line below to the clipboard, then copy it to the Clipboard (command-C):
    ~/Library/Safari/History.plist
Quit Safari. Disable Safari synchronization in iCloud, if applicable.
    Select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the Finder menu bar. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A folder window should open with a file named "History.plist" selected. Restore the file from a backup that predates the unwanted changes. If you disabled sync, re-enable it and test.

  • How to recover safari history that has been cleared

    I have a 2012 iMac running Mavericks OSX 10.9.4 4GB 1333 MHZ
I frequent a social network site that hosts photos, private mail conversations and blog discussions.
I use an app " safari cache explorer" that will very quickly look at the cache files from the browser history and give me the option to view the line items as plain text, web page, or image. The plain text view is not really that readable so I would like any suggestion on how to convert that part to something more useful. The items that can be viewed as web pages are perfect and appear exactly as the did when I was on that webpage.
Here is my problem. If the clear history function has been used in safari that explorer app has nothing to look at and sometimes I need to go back and find a preveiously viewed webpage. I am using time machine to backup to a Seagate backup plus drive and I have read at least several online discussions as well as everything on this community board on how to recover to recover to recover those files. There have been several  highly detailed explinations on how to accomplish this task but not one has worked.
Is it possible to retrive the history.plist, cache plist or whatever is needed to see those web pages from a week or two ago in a manner that they are usable?
If so what are the exact instructions on doing this task. A procedure that actually works would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Safari/History.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Quit the application if it's running. Enter Time Machine and restore the selected item from a snapshot that predates the unwanted changes. Relaunch the application and test.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Any possible way to recover Firefox history?

I downloaded Firefox 4.0. I didn't like it so I downgraded back to Firefox 3.5. I had to restart my computer. After that, my bookmarks were still there but my history was gone.
I'm extremely desperate to recover it and this has been making me feel upset all day now.

If you downgraded to Firefox 3.5 from Firefox 4 it will have deleted the history and cookies, downgrading to 3.6 does not remove that data. This is because Firefox 4 uses a new format to store the cookies, bookmarks and history. Firefox 3.6 can read this new format, but Firefox 3.5 can not. Firefox 3.5 will treat the new formats as corrupt files and replace them with new files, importing the bookmarks from a backup.
As you appear to be using Firefox 3.6.16 now, you may be able to recover them. Open your profile folder, for details of how to find it see https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Profiles
Now close Firefox. Is there a file called places.sqlite.corrupt? If there is, rename places.sqlite to places.sqlite.old, then rename places.sqlite.corrupt to places.sqlite, restart Firefox and it should have you history and bookmarks from the time that you were using Firefox 4.

  • Recovering iMessage history after clean install - reindex

With the release of 10.9 and after suffering from some cruft issues in my 10.8 install I decided to do a nuke and pave.
I am almost back to 100% however i discovered that my iMessage history no longer present. Reading another post I have found the archieve of old messages and placed them in the new 10.9 correct directory however they do not get indexed into the new install iMessage history.
The question is - Is there a know way to for iMessage to index all pressent transcripts (such as knocking out a plist file)?

    HI,
In the current OS and Messages versions different items regarding the "history" of chats is stored in two different places.
iMessages are stored in ~/Library/Messages in the chat.db items you find in there.
It is the chat.db items that makes the chat fill in with the "history" of conversations with the Contact once you have sent the first Message (or received a new incoming one.)
This is different to the process of Saved Chats which will also join up Saved Chats to the same person be they AIM, Jabber or iMessages chats.
Basically neither process will put back a chat in to the list in the main Messages window until such time as you connect to the same person again.
