Recovering lost bookmarks

I recently logged in and opened Netscape to discover that all of my bookmarks had disappeared. After searching around with Spotlight for anything with the name "bookmark," I find myself unable to find any file that contains any reference to any of the bookmarks I once had. Can anyone enlighten me as to where my bookmarks might have gone, if it's possible for a person to "accidentally" delete them all with only a single keystroke or selection, or where a person might look if they wanted to recover them?

Absolutely nothing came up when you entered "Bookmark" into Spotlight? Safari's bookmark file, "Bookmarks.plist" should appear. Netscape's bookmarks should appear as Bookmarks.html with backups appending a number, such as Bookmarks-1.html. Preview's recent items list is kept in a file called "com.apple.Preview.bookmarks.plist". And if the word "Bookmarks" appears in any documents or help files, they should appear as well.
Netscape shares bookmarks with Mozilla and for me they are buried in the Mozilla folder in the Library folder on Finder's Home Page. In the mozilla folder will be a folder named "Profiles". In that folder will be a folder named "Default". In that folder will be a folder with letters and numbers in its name. In that folder is the Mozilla/Netscape file Bookmarks.html and the numbered backups as described above. If you do not have a Mozilla folder in your Library, look for a Netscape folder either in the Library or in the Application Support folder in your Library.
Let me know what you find.

  • How do I sync from iPhone back to desktop to recover lost bookmarks?

I have Firefox 6.0.2 on my Mac laptop and on an old PC. I run the Firefox app on my iPhone. I left the account activated on my old PC and when my kids changed the bookmarks toolbar on the old PC they deleted all my work bookmarks folders - stuff I've taken years to acquire.
Can I sync from my iPhone to the mac laptop in order to recover those folders or will I have to go to an old backup to recover them? If so, what file am I looking for on the backup drive for 6.0.2's bookmarks?

    Hi!
Unfortunately this is not possible at this stage. Firefox Home is just a receiver, and the way it works doesn't allow any type of information upload.
    Sorry for the inconvenience.

  • How do I backup bookmarks to a folder on my desktop & NOT just an unreadable .json file before trying to recover lost bookmarks?

Previously whenever upgrading to a new browser my Bookmarks stayed the same. So I went into the library to backup what little I have left & was told to 'save to folder on my hard drive' & did so. There's NO FOLDER, just an unreadable file with the extension of .json
Maybe I should ask a better question: When restoring the bookmarks from a prior date will I get back EVERYTHING from that day (which would include the ones I was told to backup & can't, or am I faced with losing what I have left to get back what I lost? I have Windows XP home ed. version 3 & I'm afraid to do anything at all.
I know it's not life & death, just webpages I visit often, but some ARE very important & I don't have the greatest memory to remember them all.
PLEASE HELP ME!! Thanks in advance.

You can restore a JSON backup in Firefox if you have such a backup.<br />
    * Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Restore > Choose File
Restoring a JSON will however replace all the current bookmarks.<br />
If you have any that you want to preserve then you need to export the bookmarks to an HTML file and re-import that HTML backup after you have restored the JSON backup.<br />
Make sure that a JSON backup has .json file extension and that an HTML backup has a .html fle extension to avoid problems (nothing happens or you get an error like can't process the backup file).

  • HT5824 Any way to recover Chrome bookmarks if I've had iCloud since they were lost? Google dumped my bookmarks.

Any way to recover Chrome bookmarks if I've had iCloud on my PC, iPad and iPhone since before Google dumped them? Just noticed over thelast few days that my bookmarks were gone from iDevices, now I notice they're also gone from my PC.

    Hi Brian
I had the same exact thing happen to me - except it was my wireless keyboard that disabled my ipad.  I also have documents on Pages that I did not want t to lose.  This worked for me!  Found it on another help site....I was able reactivate my ipad - nothing lost - all is good!
    1. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    2. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    3. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    4. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    5. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    6. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    7. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just cancelling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.

  • I uninstalled firefox then reinstalled firefox...but lost all my bookmarks with the new reinstalled version. Please advise me how to recover my bookmarks.

I uninstalled firefox then reinstalled firefox. because I did not like a couple of add-ons that I wanted to remove. I thought I would still have all of my bookmarks. However, all my bookmarks were cleaned out with the new installed version. Then I tried to Repair Windows in System Restore to back track a few days in hope to recover the old version of firefox. It did not get back the old version and no bookmarks. I still get the new version with no bookmarks. Please advise me how to recover my bookmarks.

A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

  • My bookmarks and history have disappeared, and I no longer have a FF profile which is supposed to be located in Library/Application Support. Any suggestions on how to resolve? I'm most concerned with recovering my bookmarks.

I have tried restarting my computer, creating a new places database (there is no FF profile in Application Support so cannot create a new one), and restoring bookmark back-ups, none of which have resolved the problem.

Problem solved! I got fed up dealing with Firefox without any history or bookmarks for 2 months and had lost hope of ever recovering my bookmarks. So I decided to uninstall Firefox and then re-install it so I could at least use Firefox properly and just start over with bookmarks. After re-installing and opening for the first time, all of my bookmarks were there!
To uninstall drag the Firefox icon from the Applications folder into the trash. I emptied the trash (not sure if necessary). I then downloaded the latest version of firefox from mozilla.com and followed the prompts to install. After opening for the first time, all of my bookmarks were there, as well as the history up to the time the issues began two months ago.

  • To find lost bookmarks your help says to click on empty space on toolbar to get task manager, but when I click on empty space I don't get task manager.

when i installed latest version of firefox my home page went away and also I lost my bookmarks. Now when I click on the bookmarks tab I get yahoo. I tried your help and it says to click on empty space on toolbar to get to task manager, but I've clicked on all the empty space and no task manager comes up. How do I recover my lost bookmarks?????

This can be caused by a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

  • How to fix lost bookmarks in Safari on my iMac?

How do I recover my lost bookmarks?  I've gone thru all the fixes posted at different support sites and nothing has worked.  I started rebuilding my bookmarks and then lost those.  This happens without a reboot or shutdown.

    Using Time Machine restore:
    com.apple.Safari.plist
You can find this file in:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
If you do not have a backup then they're gone.
The easiest method to do all this is:
Open a Finder Window - Go Menu - Click Go to Floder.. and copy and paste:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
    tap the enter key
Open Time Machine, go back to a time  you know the bookmarks were there and restore.

  • CAN I RECOVER my bookmarks after a fresh install of F/F?

I had to re-install F/F and lost all my bookmarks. I've looked up various posts and located the recovery files only for five or six recovery dates of about 2kb each, whereas there should be at least a few dozen bookmark files of much greater size.
So, I want to try recovering my bookmarks from a system backup and my question is: Has anyone done this who can advise me?
    Regards,
    mgb

Those missing from OneDrive cannot have been uploaded, if there is an error uploading or if uploading times out (which may happen in lengthy periods of not having wifi access), in which case the upload would have been sat in the gallery waiting to be manually restarted.
If the two-fingered reset that you already tried did not help, then regrettably any unsaved data on the phone will be lost, including the photos, would be lost. If the phone does not boot up correctly, there is no way to access its file structure. Any other solutions to get the phone working again (for example: using the Software Recovery Tool or taking the phone for repair) are going to wipe the memorry clean.
    Sorry.

  • Lost bookmarks on namoroka uninstall

Hi, I have Win7 64 bit running and had installed Namoroka 64 bit Firefox as well as the 32 bit firefox. I haven't run Namo much at all, and had all by bookmarks etc set in Firefox 3.xx. I recently uninstalled Namo as I wasn't using it, but on firing up Firefox 3.6.10 I got a 'firstrun' page and all by bookmarks were back to default. Any ideas on how to retrieve my bookmarks ?
    Cheers, Nick

When you uninstalled Namoroka did you choose the option to "Remove my Firefox personal data", if you did that would have deleted all of your Firefox user data.
If that is the case you may not be able to recover the bookmarks. You can try a file undelete utility, look for a files with in the format ''bookmarks-yyyy-mm-dd.json'' and try to recover the one with the most recent date. If successful you can import that file using the method in the [[Backing up and restoring bookmarks]] article.
The [[lost bookmarks]] article may be of help, but only if the original profile folder was not deleted.

  • I did a fresh install on my computer, but when I tried to sync, it put the new bookmarks (standard firefox ones) onto the sync data instead. Is there any way to recover my bookmarks?

Like the question says, is there any way to recover them?
I can't pull them off my old install since it was erased.

Lets hope that you did not really erase your old profile, you would have had to go a little out of your way to do that. I've never used Sync but you have to have something to Sync to.
Use the following to see if you have more than one profile or your lost bookmarks
    in the bookmarkbackups folder.
Type about:support into the location bar the click on "Open Containing Folder" that will take you to your current profile. The bookmarkbackups folder has 5 backups (.json files) any of which can be restored with Firefox up through restore bookmarks.
It doesn't sound like the install pulled in your old bookmarks, so continuing ...
Sounds like you created a new profile instead of using your existing profile.
Open your profile folder and go up one level to see if you have multiple
    profiles ...
HELP (Alt+H) --> Troubleshooting information... --> "Open Containing Folder"
(or type about:support into the location bar then click on "Open Containing Folder")
note the filename, then go up one level to see if you have additional profile folders.
Check the dates of places.sqlite (new in Fx3) for update date just before you went to Fx4.
Since it is updated each time you close your session that would be a good place to check.
If you find one then note its filename (the profile name is part of the filename) and
then start the Firefox Profile Manager and open with that profile.
To prevent the problem in the future don't let Firefox start up for you after
downloading and installing a new version. Instead exit the install at that
last point, and restart Firefox in your normal manner.
If you really do want to start with a new profile like the one you have, them look in the bookmarkbackups folder of the other profiles and look particularly at the dates and the size of the .json files to find one that you can restore to your current profile -- restoring is complete replacement of what you have for bookmarks.

  • Archive & Install: Lost bookmarks

Whenever I archive and installed Leopard onto my macbook pro, I seemed to loose my firefox and safari bookmarks, although my firefox was not lost itself.
Is there anyway to recover these?
    Thanks in advance!

Recently, I lost all my Safari bookmarks when transferring data from my old iBook G4 to a MacBook Pro.
The iBook requires an Archive & Install because of a "kernel panic" as diagnosed by Apple Support. But before I do, I would like to recover those bookmarks.
I can find my Firefox bookmarks easy enough under library/Application/Support/Firefox/Profiles/d6f8tado.default/bookmarks.html
but for the life of me I can't locate the archived Safari bookmarks.
There is a file under library/safari called "bookmarks.plist" but I can only open it up as a wingdings text file. Am I close?
    Please advise. Thanks.

  • How can i recover my bookmarks and saved passwords?

i have accidentally uninstalled Firefox software. how can i recover my bookmarks and saved passwords for the various sites. Please help on this regard. I'm in a serious trouble now.

If you have removed your personal data when uninstalling Firefox then the Firefox profile folder that store your Firefox personal data has been removed.
If you do not have a backup of the files in this folder then your only option is to try to recover this data with an undelete utility like Recuva.
