Recovering MAX configuration from a hard drive image

Hi there,
I've inherited responsibility for a large, complex and expensive piece of lab equipment that is controlled by LabView, via two PXI NI-DAQ cards, several other custom PXI cards designed in ~2004-5, and a whole host of complex VIs. Recently, the PXI controller running the show decided to depart this world, and I've subsequently replaced it with a newer model. I have an image of the old controller's hard disk, and I've successfully installed LabView/migrated the data onto the new controller.
However, one thing eludes me: NI-DAQ (as opposed to DAQmx) channel names and settings in MAX. I can't find where these are stored on the filesystem, and it's nontrivial to recreate them manually. Does anyone know where MAX, for LabView 7(!)*, stores its information? Where might I find the channel settings? Most things work, aside from a few features of the VI, which obviously make references to non-existent channels.
Short of starting up the image in something like Buchs (an x86 emulator), I've no way of getting the old system up and running to have al ook. I can, howwever, look at its filesystem and registry easily. Might any of you NI-Knights be able to give me a hint where to find the information I need?
Thanks for your help!
* Yes, I'm aware that everything is written with outdated sfotware, using a depreciated -- or dead, rather -- DAQ library. However, it works, and these multi-gigabyte VIs have been keeping our lab in business for over a decade. I'm loath to spend time rewriting things basically for the sake of it. Apologies!

Hi Jack.Miller!
My name's Max and i'm an application engineer here at NI, I've been doing some research for you on this issue. Although I couldn't find out where the MAX settings are stored, I think the simplest way for you to transfer over your settings would be to use a program like Buchs and then follow this KB - http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/0E0D3D7C4AA8903886256B29000C9D5A .
You can then import the settings and you should have all the channels etc that you're after.
I hope this helps!

  • How to recover iphoto pictures from a hard drive

My macbook pro got water on it and it doesn't work anymore. I bought a new one, but want to recover the information from the hard drive in the old computer. I am trying to recover my iphoto pictures, but I cannot open the iphoto version in my old drive. Can you help? How can I recover the pictures from my iphoto library? Thank you for your suggestions.

Are you able to mount the old drive so you can access files on it?  From your comment "I cannot open the iphoto version in my old drive"  I'm assuming you can somehow.
Therefore copy the library to your new Mac and try to open the library from there.  If you can copy the library to you new Mac but can't open it with iPhoto open it with the Finder and follow these directions:
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library package like this.
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Is there a way to recover my info from my hard drive even if it won't power on?

Is there a way to recover my info from my hard drive even if it won't power on? When plugged in my computer does not power on and I am only seeing a dim amber light that is blinking. Is there a way I can recover my hard drive before sendin my computer in??

This is not something for the faint of heart. What Ogelthorpe is suggesting is that you open up your computer, remove the hard drive and then install it in a "shell" that allows you to use it as an external hard drive. This "shell" is called an enclosure. You can purchase cheap USB enclosures many places, such as at Best Buy, which has the advantage of speed if you have such a store near you. However, you can purchase better quality enclosures online, from such places as Other World Computing.
If that sounds like more than you feel comfortable with doing, pay someone else to do the job for you. Call your local Apple Store and see what they will do for you. I'm not actually sure how they handle such issues.

  • Recovered illustrator file from a hard drive will not open

    Hi,
I just recovered  some illustrator CS2/CS3 files that were accidently deleted from a hard  drive using Recuva version 1.39.509.  The files were detected as being  in excellent shape and they are recognized as illustrator files in  windows.  But I can not open them!
Please help!  These are months of work that could be lost!
Dear Jacob - I dont know why the previous discussion disappeared.  I have tried all your suggestions, including following the instructions for recovering illustrator files... None of them worked!  I am at a loss!  Again, every single one of the recoverd illustrator files can not be read, are supposedly 100% healthy from the softwared used to recover them, but they do not open!  Other files such as word adn images were recovered successfully - I dont understand what is missing here!

    TG,
As you can see on the pages mentioned in post #3, you can open the AI files as text files, and then you can see and compare the lines of code building each file.
The first part of each file is the wrapping defining the structure, folllowed by the part defining the artwork. Some of the artwork part may be corrupted, but more likely the structure part at the beginning is (it may be as little part snipped off at the very start).
So you can copy (at least some of) the part of code defining the artwork from the corrupted file and insert into the sound file after the initial part.
You may compare the two files and try to work out which part to move and where, using the file parts shown on those Adobe pages as guides.
I hope this was not too woolly.

  • Recovering aperture files from crashed hard drive?

    Hi,
I'm trying to recover Aperture photos which weren't backed up externally (I know) from the hard drive of my MBP in an external mount, I can navigate to the library but cannot find files to backup the master images.  Do I need to just copy the library or do I need to look somewhere else.  I cannot search using aperture as that isn't installed on the computer I'm using.  Would be grateful for any thoughts!
    Cheers

    Hello,
if you want to recover data from a drive after it crashed, don't do  anything to that drive that writes data to it. You might try recovery software like Disk Drill to access files, see e.g. this post: https://discussions.apple.com/message/16641843#16641843
But I do not understand from you post, how your Aperture library is organized, please explain a little bit more:
Do you have a managed or a referenced library?
Did the system drive of your MBP crash or an external drive, and which parts of your Aperture Library and master files were on the drive that crashed?
If you library is managed, then all your master image files should be contained inside the Aperture library package. This package can be copied using the Finder by dragging it to a new location. If you want to reassure yourself, that it contains all your master image files, ctrl-click the package and select "Show Package Contents" from the pop-up menu. You should see a folder "Masters" inside, and their you should find all the master image files, grouped by year and month.

  • Recover iPhoto pictures from a hard drive?

    Hello,
My hard drive of my Macbook Pro crashed, and a day before it happened I moved ALL the pictures from my phone to iPhoto.
All the pics I ever had with and of my dog who died are there.
I wanted to ask if there's a way to recover them from the hard drive?
I don't know what is wrong with the hard drive so I just wanted to ask if there's even a chance to recover them?
They gave me back my Mac all fixed but with a new hard drive because the last one kept crashing.
    Please please answer

  • Using Data Rescue II to recover lost files from corrupt hard drive!!!

OK I am terribly confused. I found out my MacBook Pro hard drive is corrupt and I can't even start up my computer. I was told to get Data Rescue II, another Mac, and an external hard drive.
I have all of the above but have no idea how to make it work!! How do I access the corrupt HD on the current iMac I am using with Data Rescue and then transfer the found files to the external HD??? Please I need help asap!!

First, if you have an external drive, then install OS X on the external drive. Boot from the external drive, install Data Rescue, then run Data Rescue and see if you are able to recover any files from the bad drive.
You boot from the external drive by restarting the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the external drive then click on the down arrow button.
If you do not have an external drive then you can try connecting the two computers with a FireWire cable and booting the computer with the bad drive into Target Disk Mode. Boot the good computer normally. Install Data Rescue and run it to see if you can recover anything from the bad drive. My guess is this method will not likely work, but one never knows without trying.
BTW, have you tried the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • How to recover deleted songs from iTunes hard drive (not iPod)

I have a Western Digital hard drive that I use to play all of my mp3 files. Tonight I was creating a playlist by dragging and dropping songs. Although I thought I was editing the playlist, it turns out that I accidently deleted a song from my library ("MUSIC").
Now anytime that I delete something from the external hard drive, it ends up in the recycling bin on my desktop. But that does not seem to be the case with songs that I delete from the "MUSIC" library on my hard drive.
I'm confused. When I accidently deleted this song, where did it go? The folder containing the mp3 file is gone, it is no longer in iTunes and it never appeared in the Recycling Bin. In the past whenever I've accidently deleted a song, I simply went to the Recycling Bin and clicked on "Restore File".
Does anyone know where to find the missing file(s) and how to restore them to my 'MUSIC' folder in iTunes?
Note that this has nothing to do with my iPod, but rather the external hard drive associated with my PC.
Thanking everyone in advance who can help!
    Chad

How I wish it were that simple.
My Recycling Bin is empty, which is what is perplexing. Just to see if this function was working properly I deleted a song from the LIBRARY and guess what? It appeared in the Recycling Bin.
Its a mystery what has happened to these songs.
This has happened on several occassions. I waited years for a few rare songs to come out in digital because only vinyl copies existed. When Apple finally reached a licensing agreement to sell these songs, I downloaded them and created a playlist. Somehow the playlist disappeared including all of the songs from the library. I didn't think anything of it because I thought that I could simply go to iTunes, select PURCHASED songs and add them. To my suprise iTunes does not have a history of my purchase.
Finally, after much trouble back and forth with Apple customer support they sent me a link for two of the most recent songs that I downloaded, but the ones that I downloaded a year or more in the past.
The whole entire scenario has left me scratching my head.

  • How can I recover my data from my hard drive

About 2 weeks ago I was uploading pictures to my computer when it froze.
I turned it off by holding down the power key, and started it up again.
It hasn't gone past the apple screen and the spinning dial since.
I have tried all the troubleshooting myself safe boot, firewire everything you can find through these threads.
After failing with all of these methods I took it into the apple store and they said that it would not appear on there machine.
So I have removed my hard drive and put it into an external case and hooked it up via usb and replaced my hard drive in my macbook.
Now when I hook my old drive (with all my files on it) up to my macbook now the old drive shows up but it will not show any of my files.
IS THERE ANY WAY I CAN RETRIEVE MY FILES ASIDE FROM GOING THE ADVANCED DATA RECOVERY ROUTE AND SPENDING THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS?????

From your long tale of woe, I take you are not backing up your data. Bad idea that.
After everything you have done it sound like your disk is in need of some kind of data recovery
Before going to a service you might try Data Rescue, http://data-recovery-software-review.toptenreviews.com/mac-recovery-software/dat a-rescue-review.html first. While there are some free data recovery program available, remember you get what you pay for.
If that doesn't work then send it out to a service for recovery
Then you might want to start planning a backup solution for the future
Remeber lose of data is a certainty. The only question is when

I need to have my registration code reset without spending more money!
    Is that possible?
    Thanks

Log in to the Apple Store using the same ID used in the purchase.

  • 2007 iMac, replaced hard drive, can't recover old files from old hard drive!

So I have a 2007 intell imac, the hard drive went out, I replaced it and bought a thermalake blacx hard drive doc to get my files off the old hard drive.  I run Disk Utility, it can see the old hard drive but it can't repair it or verify it.  Do I need to get a third party to get the info off hte old hard drive??? HELP!!!HELP!!!!!

You could use a data recovery service but that's going to be really expensive. You could also try a data recovery software like DataRescue III http://store.apple.com/us/product/TX415LL/A/prosoft-data-rescue-3
    Or DiskWarrior http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/
Either might help, I prefer DiskWarrior, but it's also possible that neither will. A hard lesson learned regarding backups I suppose.

  • How do I recover Itunes library from old hard drive

My desktop died so we pulled out the hard drive which is now attached to a "docking station" and i have been able to retrieve documents and photos no problem. I have a bunch of books on tape loaded onto Itunes. How do I move the library over to my new machine so that I can access the data?

Thank you SO SO much. That link helped me to find the true location of the data on my old hard drive - I had been looking in the wrong place. As soon as I found my data I was actually able to copy it to a folder on the new hard drive and then Add a Folder to the Library in the new itunes and it worked.

  • NetInstall from configured hard drive image - is the OS hardware-specific?

    Hello.
I deal with the installations, maintenance, etc. of about 30 computers — it's a mix of Intel iMacs, Mac Pros and G5s. About 75% of these machines in configured in one way (including applications, etc.) and the other 25% another way. Other than the OS (as some are Intel, some aren't), there's not a big different between these machines (again, with respect to the installed applications, configurations, etc.). So, I'm looking at starting to use NetInstall of future installations and upgrades and I'd like to use hard drive images of base machine installs (OS, applications, base users, settings) and I'm wondering — is the install of the OS (10.5.x) hardware-specific? Do I need to create an image for specific hardware (not including Intel vs PPC)? For example, if I create the image from an Intel iMac, can I use that image for installing a Mac Pro? I'm not sure how hardware-specific the original OS install is (if it only installs files for the machine it's being installed on, or if it installs all files for use on various machines)?
Some advice here would be appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Kristin.

Provided the Build of Mac OS X 10.5.x is the same or newer than that of your newest hardware then technically it is hardware-independent in that case.
For example 10.5.6 (9G55) will support any model of Mac (meeting Leopard's requirements) which shipped prior to its release - however there are some cases where you may be missing multi-touch demo videos if you didn't start your build from a system containing these. The 10.5.6 (9G66) retail DVD contains these and would serve as a good base. 10.5.6 (9G2141) would support all currently shipping Macs as of March 2nd 2009.
10.5.x is a fully Universal system so it will support any PowerPC-based Mac (meeting Leopard's requirements).
Refer to this document for specific build numbers for Intel Macs: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1159

  • I lost my images from my hard drive and now I can not access them in Lightroom. What can I do?

I lost my images from my hard drive and now I can not access them in Lightroom. What can I do?

Your images are truly no longer present on the hard drive(s)? Have you had your operating system do a search for them?
If such a search fails to find them, here's what I would do, in order
Look in the trash can/recycle bin
    Restore from backups
If you don't have backups ... well, why not? ... find a program on the internet called an "undelete utility" (free versons are available) and then download and install it and run it. If you are going to do this, then do not perform any other tasks on your computer except find the program, download it (if possible to a different drive than the photos were stored on), install it (if possible to a different drive than the photos were stored on), and run it. In the future, you will need to commit to making regular backups of your photos and of your Lightroom catalog file, no excuses.
If that doesn't work, but the thumbnails still appear in Lightroom, you can probably recover the thumbnails from Lightroom via a plug-in, but these would be low-resolution versions of your photos, if you really need instructions on this step, write back
