Recovering My Catalog to a New Computer (Organizer)

My computer was in a flood and I was able to save my disk drive and copy it to a new one. This then required me to reinstall Photoshop Elements (5.0) on a new computer but of course myold catalog is not there. How can I recover my old Organizer to my new computer so that I don't have to type in all new tags, etc? I have located a file called "My Catalog" that has an old backup but is there a way to just bring in the old file into my new installation instead of the backup?

The file paths in the catalog DB will probably be different especially if moving from XP to Windows 7.
The ideal method is back-up & restore from the TLY file created within Elements back up. Is that what you have? Otherwise you will have to use File à Get Photos à From Files & Folders but some or all tags will be lost.

  • What is the best way to migrate PSE6 Catalog (Wxp) to new computer W7, PSE11?

What is the best way to migrate PSE6 Catalog (Wxp) to new computer W7, PSE11?  Previous PSE6 recovery (Wxp) after a failed HD resulted in pictures showing but not opening due to connection issues.  Had to restore pictures from backup and rebuild the catalog and albums.  Found a third party fix afterwards that has no support past PSE8.  Trying to make this migration to PSE11 painless.

That's a very common and classical situation :

Just make sure that your backup to the external drive is ok : you should find a 'backup.tly' file in the folder.
Use the PSE11 organizer to restore from the PSE7 backup : the first step restores all your media files, the second automatically does a catalog conversion to the PSE11 format.
Read the note in the above link about restoring from XP to ulterior Win OS. You can also restore to a 'custom' location. For instance in a 'C:\My new library' folder. Make sure that master folder is accessible to all users, and if you want, you can move the catalog (database) itself from that location to the default location : catalog manager, option to move catalogs to location accessible to all users.

  • How do I transfer my elements 8 catalog to a new computer?

I am using Elements 8.  The program and catalog are located on the hard drive for my computer.  Photos are stored on an external hard drive.  I want to transfer my photoshop catalog to a new computer.  How do I do this?  I understand that I need to deactivate Elements 8 on the "old" computer before I load the program onto my new computer.  How do I make sure that the catalog is not lost and transfers to the new computer?  Thanks, DanOmaha

  • Moving catalog to a new computer

I recently purchased a new computer, and I need to transfer my existing Lightroom (3.6) catalog to the new machine.  I have installed Lightroom on the new machine, and have updated it to the same version as on the old machine.  All my images are on an external drive that I can move to the new computer.
Can I simply export the existing catalog, move the hard drive, and import the catalog into the new instance of Lightroom on the new computer?  Obviously, I want to retain al the keywords, develop adjustments, etc., that I had in the original catalog.
Thanks.  Feel free to point me to an FAQ or other resource.
    Thanks,
    Dave

The link provided basically says the same thing, but if the images already exist on the external hard drive and the catalog on the internal hard drive then you can simply copy of their catalog without need of exporting. Exporting will work but your basically wanting to just recreate a copy of the existing catalog so it's easier just to copy it (assuming you have everything together (the catalog, the preview file and any catalog backups).
I can say from experience, I have seen people moving the catalog to a new computer who have had issues when they have tried to do it by exporting the catalog because they skip a step or forget setting or certain images. Spare yourself the trouble.
After you copy it back to the new computer you just need to relink the image folder to the external hard drive.

  • Moving the organizer catalog to a new computer

I am upgrading from Photoshop Elements 9 to version 12 and loading it onto a new computer running Windows 8.2.  To move the Organizer Catalog I have tried several time to create a backup on an external hard drive from version 9 so i can restore it on the new computer with the upgraded software.  Each time i run the backup the process stops and displays an error message "Error encountered while writing files".  This occurs when the process is approximately 75% complete.  There are 12,326 items in the catalog, the estimated "media size" needed it 142,891.30 MB, i have 339 GB of free space on the external hard drive.  Any recommendations on how to proceed?

    Hi,
Please try repairing and optimizing your catalog before taking backup.
    You can do this by:
File > Manage Catalogs and click on Repair and Optimize buttons

  • How do I use a backup of a pse 8 catalog as my new catalog on a new computer w/pse 13?

    Hi,
The title explains what I'd like to do but am not sure how to accomplish this.  The new computer is windows 8.1 64 bit.  Any suggestions?

Use the backup and restore method, starting in the PSE8 Organizer.
These instructions relate to version 6 onwards.

  • Restore photos and catalog together on new computer?

I recently had a computer crash and want to migrate my photos and changes from my old hard drive into my newly installed Lightroom software on the new computer.  I recovered the old drive, and accessed it from my new computer.  I found the most recent Lightroom catalog and imported it.  Then I imported all of my photos into Lightroom.  The problem is that the catalog and the photos don't seem to be talking to each other.  In the catalog, the photos are there all bunched together, no folders separating by date.  In the photo folders that ARE separated by date, the original photos are there as they were first imported (RAW files), but don't have the develop changes that I made to them.  How can I get these two things to link up?

I think the easiest thing to do is to follow these instructions from scratch, rather than trying to fix what you have already done

  • PSE9 install on new computer-Organizer doesn't work

I'm replacing an old computer. I deactivated PSE9 on the old computer and uninstalled the program. I then downloaded and installed PSE9 on my new computer. The install showed no problems. When I open PSE9 and select the editor, it appears to work fine. When I select the organizer, however, it opens and looks normal, except that there are NO menu functions at the top of the window. Of course, without those, I cannot restore my catalog from my old computer.
Any idea on what needs to be done to fix this?

Yor best bet for getting program specific help is to post your issue in the product forum.  Here is a link to the PSE forum...

  • Photos on External Hard Drive, Catalog on Internal; New Computer

I just got a new computer and want to move my Adobe PSE catalog over to the new internal hard drive. I don't know where to put it since Vista's directories look different than XPs. All of my photos are on an external hard drive, but my guess is that the letter will change when I move it to the new computer. How do I handle this migration so that I can see all of my information (photos, tags, titles) on the new PC? Thanks for any advice.

The entire process of making a backup, including backups of photos, via the PSE Backup Catalog command, makes moving catalogs and photos as successful as possible. Doesn't depend on what version of PSE you own.
If you are using PSE5, and the drive letter of the external HD remains the same, you can simply move the catalog file to the new computer. You can put the catalog anywhere you want on the new computer, and then double-click on it the first time to open it. Really doesn't matter where you put it.
    i But
, if the drive letter where your photos are stored changes ... oops, that makes things a whole lot more difficult. Best to go back to the solution in paragraph 1.
If you are using PSE6 or later, you need to speak to a PSE6 or PSE7 expert.

  • Migrating the Photoshop Elements 5.02 Catalog to a new computer

I have installed Adobe Photoshop Elements  11 on my new Windows 7 computer. How do I transfer the versin 5.02  catalog from my old Vista computer to my new computer?

I would recommend doing a Fail/Backup from PSE 5 to an EHD and then a File/Restore on the new computer using PSE 11.

  • My old computer was damaged. I can need to recover my bookmarks on my new computer

My issue does not seem to be addressed here.. I hope someone can help me.
my old computer is totally gone, no way to back anything before it happened.. So now I have a new computer. I am desperate to recover all my bookmarks I had in firefox..gmail account
currently, the new profile and bookmarkbkup is showing a new date since I got this computer.
I do not know the old firefox profile name....Is there a way to recover the old profile name, and maybe I can recover bkmarks that way.
thanks for anyones help.....all of the articles I found only address the issue if you have the old and new comuputer.

In a lot of cases the hard drive is still functioning and can be build in an enclosure that can be connected to the computer via an USB interface.
That would allow to access the Firefox profile folder and recover your personal data.
If that hard drive has been crashed as well in such a way that no access is possible then I'm afraid that your Firefox personal data is lost if you do not have a backup.

  • Restoring catalogs  to a new computer & version of Photoshop Elements

I have Photoshop Elements 8 and Premiere Elements 8 installed on my computer. The computer's operating system is 64 bit Windows 7.
I have an unresolved problem with printing new JPEG images in Photoshop Elements 8. If I don't adjust the date in the image file before I print Photoshop Element crashs. I have no issues with Premiere Elements. I have no problem printing JPEG images which are opened from a RAW edit. No time adjustment is necessary in that case.
This is not a question about the printing issue on which I've given up finding a fix. However, thanks to all who offered some ideas, though.
I've tried everything, including seeking help on the Adobe forum, but without success. I've decided on a drastic measure. I'm going to delete Photoshop Elements 8 from my computer, but not Premiere Elements 8 and delete all the photo images from the computer too. I've everything backed up. I hope that should leave me with a computer that has no trace of Photoshop Elements 8 or my photos. Then I'm going to install Elements 10 and restore my catalogs from my backup. Hopefully that will leave the printing problem behind.
    Here is my question.
When I restore my catalogs to Photoshop Elements 10 will that procedure restore not only my images but also my albums & tags etc that I had created in version 8?
Thanks to anyone who can help.

    Ken,
Thank you very much for the reply. I'm relieved that the albums & tags are part of what I backed up so they'll be restored to Photoshop Elements 10.
I've looked at the Adobe document to which you gave me the link. Thanks for that too.
I have one final question that follows from the Adobe document that strictly relates to Premiere Elements 8 and not Photoshop Elements but I'll ask it in this forum  anyway. If no one is sure I'll pose it in the Premiere Elements forum.
As part of the uninstalling of Photoshop Elements 8.0 the Adobe document refers to removing two folders. One is C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 8.0. The other is C:\Program Files\Adobe\Elements Organiser 8.0. If I remove the folder C:\Program files\Adobe\Elements Organiser 8.0 does that have any effect on Premiere Elements. I use Premiere Elements but I never use the Organiser with it?

  • How can I transfer my Elements 6 catalog to a new computer?

Will I have to purchase an external hard drive?  I saved the back.tly file to a memory stick BUT Element 13 said it was not a supporedt file when I tried to import it.  It will take 39 CD's to manually back up.  Am I missing something?  I really only want the current catalog, as I have deleted unwanted photos from there and now made sure ALL were tagged with keywords.

  • How do I maintain the configuration of my current Catalog in PSE9 when moving it to a new computer?

While the Version Sets in my current catalog are collapsed, the version sets in the Catalog on the new computer have all become 'expanded'; this is unacceptable to me, as many of the pairs that are stacked as Version Sets have become separated.  While all of the Version Sets are "tagged", it looks as though many of the photos in the expanded sets are without tags.  Problem #2 is that the hierarchy of Keyword Tags that I currently use is lost when the Catalog is restored in the new computer's Organizer.  I currently use about 500 Keyword Tags, divided into 6 categories (i.e. People, Places, Locations, Events, Other, Bird Species).  On the new computer, the tags are alphabetized without being separated into their 6 categories.  I currently have close to 30,000 items in my Catalog, and have spent hundreds, perhaps thousands, of hours editing (and saving both the original and  edited files as  Version Sets), tagging and captioning all of my photos.  I followed the instructions previously published in "Photoshop Elements Help" regarding backup to an external hard drive and restoring the files in an empty Organizer on the new computer.  I also used the "Save Keyword Tags To File" command before the backup.  Any suggestions to remedy my two major problems would be appreciated.  I do have the intact "current" Catalog on my old computer, complete with tags and captions, collapsed version sets, and a list of Keyword Tags organized in the Hierarchy that has worked best for me.

    Hi,
The version set information and the tag hierarchy are stored within the catalog. It sounds as though you haven't brought over the catalog from your old computer.
The recommended way to transfer elements from one computer to a new one is to use the Backup catalog to CD, DVD or Hard Drive on your old system and then use Restore catalog from CD, DVD or Hard Drive on your new system. Is this how you did it?
That should have preserved your version sets.
