Recovering photos from my Time Machine

I am attempting to recover photos from my iPhoto app via the Time Machine.
When I enter Time Machine, my Desktop folder opens.   I go back to the September 12, 2013 and to the iPhoto application.
However, the iPhoto icon has a white “Do Not” symbol (circle with a diagonal line) on it.  When I attempt to open it I get a pop-up box similar to what I get with the dropdown “About iPhoto” information from iPhoto in the Toolbar and the iPhoto icon again the circle with a diagonal line.

Try going to the pictures folder and restoring the iPhoto Library file in Time Machine.
I hope I helped.

The correct method of restoring photos from Time Machine is to restore the entire library.
The way that TM backs up files makes nearly impossible to go into the backup via the Finder and recover individual files. So you will have to restore a library that contains the photos you need being sure to select the option to keep both versions.
Then open the restored library and export those photos you need.  Open your original library and import those photos.  After that you can delete the recently restored library.

  • How do I unlock photos from my Time Machine back up?

I moved from a MacBook Pro 2010 to a new Macbook Pro (today), how do I unlock my photos from my Time Machine back up so I can use them on my new Pro? I have already recycled my old MacBook, and my Time Machine was backing up to an external. Please help! I can see the data in the back up, I just can't move the photos to my new computer to use them.

    Hello MommaBruno,
After reviewing your post, I have located an article that can help in this situation. It contains helpful advice concerning Time Machine:

  • Can I selectively recover files from my Time Machine Back-up?

After installing the most current apps from the App Store, OS X 10.8.5, Safari and iTunes,my system became disfunctional. I did not back up my system before this happened. Before these updates, I had the spinning beach ball on opening and closing apps and applications quiting or freezing. Eventually, after trying to repair by various means, I couldn't access my desktop. I went into Recovery mode and did a backup of my corrupt system and reinstalled OS. I have a good basic system now but now I would like to know, "Can I selectively recover files from my Time Machine Back-up?"

The basic answer is Yes, but it depends on what files. Can you give an example of what type of files and where they were located.

  • Can I manually recover files from a Time Machine backup?

I'm just about to perform a fresh install of OS X Lion.  I plan to re-install the apps I need from scratch so only need my files backed up (iTunes/Aperture library, documents folder etc).  At the moment I have time machine backing up to an external USB disk.
Do I need to copy my Music/Pictures/Documents folders to another USB disk before doing a fresh install of Lion or can I just copy/paste them from my time machine backup disk (would save a lot of time)?  I don't want to do a time machine recovery, recover preferences or apps etc - just manually recover my data.
    Thanks.

  • Recovering notes from a time machine backup

I replaced the hard drive in my MacBook Pro. After installing OS X Mavericks on the new drive I began migrating data from the Time Machine back up of my previous hard drive (running the newest version of Mountain Lion). I have been sucessfull in migrating all data over with the exception of my notes. Does anyone know how to find the notes on the TM back up and then how to restore them on to my current hard drive?

don't know if this will work any better than doing it from finder but you can try doing it from terminal
    use the following terminal command
    ditto --noacl path/to/sourcefolder path/to/destinationdirectory
to get a path to a folder you can drag it to the terminal window.
make sure all the spaces in the above command are there.

  • How do I recover files from a Time Machine backup after a clean system reinstall?

I had a really funky problem with my Japanese input that is too weird (and irrelevant at this point) to go into here. The gist is that I took my 13-inch, Mid-2012 MacBook Air to the Apple Store in Osaka, and one of their geniuses told me he couldn't isolate the cause and that the only solution was to do a complete reinstall. Of course, I had backed up my whole disk to my Time Capsule before going to the store. The problem is, I cannot do a straight backup, because that will simply bring back the unsolvable problem.
I got the MacBook Air home and used the moving assistant utlity (sorry, I don't know the English name for it since my system's in Japanese) to resinstall all my applications. So far so good. The problem is, I have no idea how to get my files, photos, music, and movies from the Time Capsule into my new account. I didn't see any option for that when I ran the moving assistant utility, and I absolutely do not want to resinstall anything from the old Library Folder.
When I go into Time Machine mode, pinks lines on the right side of the screen indicate that Time Machine has all my old backups there, but when I try to navigate to them, I get only an empty black window. I assume that's because Time Machine does not recognize my old account and new account as the same account (and indeed there is no reason at this point that it should, since I don't know how to link them).
Any help would be very much appreciated.

While in Time Machine, press the key combination shift-command-C. The front window will show all mounted volumes. All snapshots should now be accessible. Select the one you want and navigate to the files you want to restore.

  • New computer: how do I retrieve photos from different Time Machine backups?

I use Time capsule to back up my iMac & my Macbook Pro. My old Macbook Pro "died" last week and right now I'm setting up my new one. I have copied the files & documents I need from my old laptop and my iMac without any problems (though it took a surprisingly long time considering the small amount of docs I copied). I have however not copied any applications or photos.
My question is: how to I retrieve photos from the different Time Machine back ups (iMac & old laptop) to my new computer without messing up? It would be especially "cool" if I could retrieve only some of the photos.
(I don't know if this has any importance, but my old Macbook Pro was & current iMac is running on Leopard and the new Macbook Pro on Snow Leopard).

Your best bet is to start over; erase the new Mac's internal HD, reinstall OSX, then use Setup Assistant to transfer your stuff.  It's the fastest and most reliable way to do it.  See How do I set up a new Mac from my old Mac or its backups?, especially the green "Second Chance" box.
Otherwise, to see the backups for a different Mac, see #17 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  To restore selected items, see #15 there.

  • Can't see photos from previous Time Machine backup

    Here is my issue:
I had two MacBook Pros (one old, one new).
I bought an external hard drive.
I backed up both the old and the new MacBook.
I wiped and sold my old MacBook.
I opened the backup of the old MacBook on the external hard drive in an effort to find my old photos.
On the external drive, I went to Backups.backupdb > Users > Pictures.
On the Pictures icon I see a red "caution" type icon.
I click on the folder and get a popup that says, "The folder pictures can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents."
How do I access all my photos that are in this "locked" folder?
    Thanks!!
    Jim

You do not directly access Time Machine backups - you use Time Machine to restore them - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

  • Recovering data from partial time machine backup

I bought an external hd to backup my macbook using time machine. During the initial backup with time machine the computer froze. I took it to the apple store and they said the hd crashed, so they replaced it.
i had the external hd with me and they showed me how to find the files in the backups folder (using Show Package Contents) and said that I could drag and drop to restore any files i wanted.
when i got home, i tried to copy the files from the .inprogress backup and i got error code 1426. i've tried to use migration assistant, but it doesn't recognize a partial backup. i've tried repairing the disk with disk utility. i know the files i want are there and i can even use them (i can, for example, run ms word from within the .inprogress backup file), but i can't free them from this external hd.
any advice would be greatly appreciated

  • Need recover iPhotos from another Time Machine backup

    Hi
My old mac took a nose dive and is no longer, so I want to recovery all that I lost and bring it over to another computer. I am trying to find a way to get all the iPhotos off the backed up iPhoto Library.
First I tried to open the back up file, but that won't let me because I do not have permission to open. So I set the permission to allow so, but it still wont.
What is the best way to get those photos onto my iPhoto Library on my secondary computer?
    Thanks in Advance

  • HT1199 I needed to restore my Imac (lion) from a Time Machine backup on a peripheral HD.  Everything woirked fine except none of my Pictures showed up and my TM backups were all erased.  Any way to recover??

I need to perform a complete restore of my IMac from a stand-alone HD Time Machine backup.  The restore was to the internal HD in the IMac.  The IMac is a new Intel i5 unit running Lion.  The restore went fine except none of my picture files appeared.  My external HD is partioned into a Time Machine Back Up and a Stoarge partion.  All the TM back ups prior to the restore are gone and the external storage was wiped clean.  3000 photos from our African Safaris are gone.  Any ideas on if they can be recovered from either the external storage drive or the internal HD?
Where did the older TM BUs go?
    Thanks for any advise

    Hello:
I don't know what you did, but there must have been some option to clear the external HD.  To my knowledge, restoring from a Time Machine backup will NOT clear the external HD.
Since I was not there, I really cannot speculate on what happened:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4927
In any event, there are third party tools that will attempt to recover data from erased drives (the erase normally deletes pointers, not the actual data).

  • I have just taken delivery of a brand new 15" macbook pro, tried migration assistant from a time machine backup, music, photos, programs etc. They now take up 350gb of my hard drive but the files are nowhere to be found? can anyone help?

Set migration assistant to run whilst on a lunch break, given that it needed 2 hours or so, when i returned all programs and applications had moved across from my time machine backup of a now dead 15"macbook pro 2009 edition running snow leopard...When i look at my new system information it shows my new 500gb drive is full of music, movies and photos and has only 168gb free, not enough to run a new migration and i don't have any boot disks for Lion so really don't want to erase the hard drive. To compound the problem i'm in Vietnam where there isn't a genius bar just around the corner, or even an aasp within 700km - what should I do?

Is the HDD in the 2009 15" MBP dead?  (The original source of your data)  If not, you might want ot take it out and put it in an enclosure.
You might try spotlight on know files to see if that gives you any clues where your data is located.
You might down load from the Internet OmniDiskSweeper (free) and open it.  It should show you all of the files you have on your MBP and enable to locate them.
    Ciao.

  • How to recover the autocomplete data from a Time Machine backup?

How to recover the Safari 5.1.7 autocomplete data from a Time Machine backup on Mac OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard)?
To solve other issues (Safari crashing sometimes when saving web pages), I selected:
    Safari - Empty Cache
Safari - Reset Safari - Selected ALL - Reset
I could later on recover some Safari autofill data restoring
    HD/Users/~/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    HD/Users/~/Library/Safari/Form Values
    HD/Users/~/Library/Safari/History.plist
but other autocomplete data is missing, including the one when filling web form search fields in web pages, for instance, and also some username and password login data on some web sites.
How to restore all such data from the Time Machine Backup?
    Thanks!

    I also recovered:
    HD//Users/~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain
    What else should I recover?
