Recovering Purchased music post-crash

Following a hard drive crash, I re-installed iTunes on Windows XP. I then copied my iPod's music onto iTunes.
I then synced my iPod to the new iTunes library, but now, I can't play purchased music on the iPod. They appear in iTunes, but when I sync, I get the following message:
"Some of the items could not be copied to the iPod because you are not authorized to play them on this computer."
The songs are in my iTunes library, so any suggestions on how to get them back onto my iPod would be greatly appreciated.
Ancient Dell Dimension PC   Windows XP

I think I figured it out! In the iTunes library, go to File, then choose "transfer purchases from ipod". This will put all the songs from your ipod into your current iTunes library. Next, go to File, then choose "sync songs from ipod". It will give you the same message about deleting the existing stuff on your ipod. Choose the option to delete and sync. Since all your music is in your library, it will come back over to your ipod. Good luck!

    Hey there Iboppie,
It sounds like you need to have the menu bar showing in iTunes. This article will help you with that:
iTunes: Turning on iTunes menus in Windows 8 and 7
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5610
To turn on iTunes menus in Windows 8 or 7, do one of the following:
    Press the Alt key.
This will turn the menus on and off temporarily. This will change back to the default, the iTunes menus being turned off, when you next close iTunes.
To keep the iTunes menus active, change the setting by selecting the Menu icon in the upper-left, and then selecting Show Menu Bar. Alternatively, you can press Control-B.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Regards,
    Sterling

  • Recovering purchased music when computer crashes

My friends computer has crashed and she lost all of her downloaded music. This made me think about the music I have purchased through the iTunes music store... If my computer crashes and I lose my downloads, is there a way to recover the music I have purchased? Is there a record of my purchases and can I get them again without repurchasing them?

Store policy states that downloads are a one time deal & it's the user's responsibility to backup important files. The store will even send you a reminder to backup your files after every 10-15 downloads. I would strongly suggest that you begin a regular backup program for your music by burning data CD/DVD's or using an external HD. Do not count on the store to allow you to re-download, in case of a disaster, backing up, now, will save you a lot of grief if disaster strikes.

  • Help recovering purchased music

    Hi
My system just crashed. The hard drive is ruined
When I put I tunes on the replacement computer- is there any way to redownload all my purchased music?
    Thanks

Hello, Christopher, and welcome to the Discussions.
Sorry, but officially Apple does not allow redownloads of purchased tracks. It's your responsibility to make backup copies in case something goes wrong with your system, as unfortunately it apparently did in your case, and you lose all the information on your hard drive. If you haven't made a backup, and don't have your tracks on an iPod, you're probably out of luck and will need to repurchase your tracks.
You can try contacting iTunes Music Store Customer Service and explaining what happened. Reportedly in some cases Apple has allowed redownloading on a one-time basis, but don't count on it.
Forum Tip: Since you're new here, you've probably not discovered the Search feature available on every Discussions page, but next time, it might save you time (and everyone else from having to answer the same question multiple times) if you search a couple of ways for a topic before you post a question.
    Regards.

  • Recovering Purchased Music

We recently had to reinstall our operating system, without first backing up most recently purchased music. Is there any way to recover the music or do we have to re-purchase?

Sorry, but officially Apple does not allow redownloads of purchased items other than iPhone/iPod touch applications. It's your responsibility to make backup copies in case something goes wrong with your system, as unfortunately it apparently did in your case, and you lose all the information on your hard drive. The official statement of their policy can be found here, among other places. If your hard drive was erased and you don't have a backup of your purchased items, and don't have them on an iPod, you're probably out of luck and will need to repurchase your tracks.
If you have your tracks on an iPod, post back and someone here can help you get them restored. Otherwise you can try contacting iTunes Store Customer Service (select the category and subcategory closest to the issue you're reporting) and explaining what happened. Reportedly in some cases Apple has allowed redownloading on a one-time basis. But don't count on it.
    Regards.

  • Can you recover purchased music through Itunes?

I had a skipping issue with my Ipod and finally re-sync-ed it with Itunes but lost about $150 worth of music (that was already on there, all purchased through Itunes but on my dead computer, hence not recoverable)is there any way to recover the music I've lost? Does Itunes store my purchase history? I know how to access the current stuff it's the previously purchased stuff I want. My MIL says I can but did explain how, does anyone know?
      Windows XP

If you had no back up I'm afraid the policy on lost purchases is that you have to pay to download them again:
"Once a Product is purchased and you receive the Product, it is your responsibility not to lose, destroy, or damage the Product, and Apple shall be without liability to you in the event of any loss, destruction, or damage."
You could try contacting the iTunes Music Store Customer Service and you might be able to persuade them to sanction a second free download. There have been occasional reports in the iTunes forum of this happening, however just be aware that they are not under any obligation to do so. • Stolen laptop. recover purchased music from itunes?

I have recently had my laptop stolen along with my itunes libary. is there any way I can recover my "purchased" music from the itunes store?  not everything I purchased is on my ipod.

Was your backup copy of your computer stolen as well?
If not, then use it to put everything back.
You can also transfer itunes purchases from an ipod.  File>Transfer Purchases
If you are int the U.S., then you can use the newly released icloud beta.
Open itunes, go to itunes store.  Look under Quick Links.  Click Purchased.

  • Recover Purchased Music from Virus-Infested Computer

So my computer with all my music had a virus eventually leading to the failure of the hard-drive resulting in all my files being lost, including itunes. Although I learned from this catastrophe to start backing up, I wanted to know if I could recover my purchased music. I spent quite a decent amount so it seems ridiculous that Apple is just going to leave me hanging like that. Any insight anyone

    Welcome to AD!
My insight would be, it takes a catastrophe such as the one you described, to convince folks they need to make regular backups.
Do you have all your content on an iPod, perhaps? I wouldn't call that a true backup, but it could do in a pinch.
You can ask iTS support for another download, but I doubt they'll say yes.
Go ahead, though; the worst that can happen is they'll say NO.

    Best of luck!

  • Recover "Purchased Music" Playlist

Under the "Store" section in iTunes, I accidently deleted the "Purchased Music" playlist that contains a playlist of all purchased music on that computer. Note that I did NOT delete the music, just the playlist.
For example under "Store" instead of showing:
    Store
    -iTunes Store
    -Shopping Cart
    -Purchased Music
    But mine just shows:
    Store
    -iTunes Store
    -Shopping Cart
I looked under all the settings and preferences I could find to try to turn it back on. I also tried searching and just found a bunch of threads where people had deleted their purchased music, not this playlist.
If I can't get it back that's fine, but figured I would ask since it one of the defualt playlists. Thanks in advance.

i did as described (created a smart playlist with purchased and protected AACs), and it has successfully identified my purchased files, but when i try to drag them to the green purchased playlkist under "store" they do not transfer. it is as if the "purchased" playlist is protected from any additions that do not come from the itunes store, although all of these songs were purchased on the itunes store. any suggestions?
Try dragging the actual songs from your Library into the Purchased playlist, and not the songs that appear from the Smart Playlist; use the Smart Playlist to identify the purchased entries and try again this way.
Although I'm not totally sure why it isn't adding to your Purchased list. I just added the same purchased song to my Purchased playlist twice, through both methods described. (from Smart Playlist and from my Library)
    Strange...

  • I had a hard drive crash.  How do i recover Purchased music and apps

How do I get my stuff back?

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion.
Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup ( not good), then you can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod:  File>Transfer Purchases
You buy one and only one download of music and vids.  It is your responsibility to move/copy/backup your purchases.
Unlike music you can redownload apps

  • Recover purchased music

    hey all,
iv just upgraded my windows to vista from xp, but i also format me HDD so i lost all my purchased material. Even though I have it on my ipod is there anyway to get it back on my laptop its self without going through the hidden files etc.
    thanks

Transferring tracks from an iPod back to iTunes has been covered here a number of times already, but again:
First, you need to prevent automatic synchronzation with a blank copy of iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer, click "cancel" when iTunes presents the dialog box offering to synchronize to the iPod. Or hold down the Shift and Ctrl keys in Windows. This should stop the iPod from auto synching with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 3 and 25 seconds depending on your computer.
Then if you're using iTunes 7, you can then copy music that you purchased from the iTunes Store back to iTunes directly (use the Transfer Purchases From iPod command under the iTunes File menu).
If you're not using iTunes 7 or want to copy back other tracks, the easiest way will be to search VersionTracker for "iPod". You'll find a number of utilities that can transfer your tracks and your playlists from your iPod back to your PC.
It's also possible to do this manually, but the procedure is rather involved. If you're interested, though, see this thread:
    MacMuse: Computer crashed
    Hope this helps.

  • Recovering Purchased Music after Computer Stolen?

Recently my computer was stolen and my iPod completely broke while I was working in Africa. I have since purchased a new computer (thanks mostly to very generous people, thank you!) I was wondering if there was a way to redownload the music I purchased from iTunes onto my new computer as the whole thing was lost the old one. I couldn't update my iPod because it was broken. There's probably no way around this and I'm going to have to struggle with no music for a while, but I was hoping that people much much smarter than myself might be able to help out. Thank you.

If your iPod had been working, the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
However, the policy on lost purchases is that you have to pay to download them again:
"Once a Product is purchased and you receive the Product, it is your responsibility not to lose, destroy, or damage the Product, and Apple shall be without liability to you in the event of any loss, destruction, or damage."

  • How do I recover purchased music into my Macbook

I had to re install my OS operating system in my Macbook Pro and I didn't have a back up or made one of the music at the time. Is there a way of getting or downloading the same music I purchased into this lamptop again?

Have you got a recently synched iPod by any chance? In this case you might use an application like SENUTI to retrieve your tracks - if not try contacting iTMS customer support and explain your situation: Some users reported that they were granted a free re-download, but ...
