Recovering RAID1 after non RAID boot

The system was setup to use 2 sata disks in raid-1 (mirror) configuration
with Windows XP (SP1).
Because of some other issues I did a bios update and forgot to activate raid in bios....
Windows XP booted up ok, propably doing some automatic driver update.
I wasn't allerted at that time, because I have previously seen
XP reconfigure itself  after minor bios changes.
It was only latter when I noticed the new disk on explorer, and started to worry.
Turning RAID on in BIOS causes the Windows XP bootup to fail, because
of "missing system file" in windows directory. Trying without RAID
system boots ok.
Is there any way of recovering RAID operation without reinstalling everything?

It's strange that it wouldn't boot off the raid anymore simply because you unknowingly allowed it to boot with the Raid disabled after the Bios update. It Really shouldn't do that.
The only thing I can suggest is trying to restore the driver. Can you boot to safe mode with the Raid enabled? Then run WinXP system restore to before you updated Bios. Failing that try running system restore with the Raid disabled as it will boot that way and when it does the re-boot, go into Bios and re-enable the Raid then allow the reboot to continue.
Finally, you could do a repair installation of XP. Load the XP CD and hit F6 to load the Intel Raid driver again. Then let it find the XP partition and follow the prompts to do a repair install. This keeps all your settings and programs but any updates to XP(ie: SP2 etc...) will be gone. Again you should backup all crucial data before doing any of this.
Personally, if system restore doesn't work I would just burn a Slipstreamed Copy of XP with SP2 built-in from your original disk and do a fresh install.
Not what you wanted to hear I know....anybody got any other ideas?

• How to get Sil 3114 to be NON raid on Neo4 platinim

Ive searched all day to try and find this answer with no luck.  I even saw a post or 2 on the forum here that were not totally resolved.  I want to use the orange usb sil3114 as a normal non raid sata.  It shows up now during bootup because i enabled it in the bios, but it wont work as jbod because when I go into the utility that is not an option so the drive I connect to it wont work.

http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=1&prod_no=165
Reading below carefully I get the impression, that BIOS will not see the disk.
SiL chapter is no 6 in the manual. Since you have so many disks already I dare not give any advice of my own:
Before installing the SATARAID5 software, Silicon Image Serial ATA host adapter
driver must be installed. Insert MSI driver CD into the computer’s CDROM drive and
select Silicon Image SATA RAID Drivers.
The Java 2 Runtime Environment is required for the SATARAID5 GUI. The Java 2
Runtime Installer and executable package must be downloaded from the Sun
Microsystems website at http://java.sun.com/j2se/downloads.html. The computer
must have an Internet connection set up before installation can proceed.
Save the installer file to a known location, such as the My Documents folder. Using
Windows Explorer or by clicking on the My Computer icon on the desktop, select
the installation file and open it. The installation will begin. The installer program will
download the needed files from the Internet.
Creating JBOD
Since BIOS no longer reports non-RAID drives to the system BIOS, if a non-RAID
boot drive or data drive is desired, a JBOD
can be created so BIOS will report it to the system BIOS.
1. To create a JBOD, Select ”Create RAID set”
2. Select “JBOD” and press Enter.
3. Select JBOD drive from the physical drive list and press Enter.
4. Select JBOD size with and keys.
5. After the JBOD size is set, the message “Are You Sure?” will display before
completing the configuration. Answer “N” to abort the creation of the JBOD, or “Y”
to proceed with the JBOD creation.
Resolving Conflicts
When a RAID set is created, the metadata written to the disk includes drive
connection information including the channel on the host adapter to which it is
connected. If after a disk failure the replacement disk was previously part of a
RAID set or used in another system, it may have conflicting metadata, specifically
in reference to the drive connection information. If so, this will prohibit the RAID set
from being either created or rebuilt. In order for the RAID set to function properly,
this old metadata must be first overwritten with the new metadata. To correct this,
select “Resolve Conflict” and the correct metadata, including the correct drive
connection information; will automatically be written to the replacement disk.
1. Select “Resolve Conflicts” and press Enter.
2. Select the “Conflict” entry in the Logical Drive Status window and press Enter.
3. Note that some conflict resolutions may result in the drive letter assignment
changing; for example the RAID set may have been drive D: but after the conflict
resolution, it may become drive E. Be aware of this when performing a conflict
resolution. To maintain the same drive lettering, the SATA cables connected to the
drives may need to be swapped, or in the case of a SATA-based removable drive
unit, the order of the drives within the chassis made need to be changed.
Press ‘Y’ to accept the change and resolve the conflict.
4. The conflict will be resolved. The RAID Set will appear in the Logical Drive
window.
Reserved Drive and Setting Size for RAID Set, Spare Drive, or
JBOD
Once a physical drive has been used to create a RAID set, spare drive, or JBOD
by BIOS utility, BIOS saves user selected set or drive size in the reserved area of
the physical drive. There is no way to remove the reserved area information even
after the user deletes the set or drive. For this reason, after a set or drive is
deleted, BIOS recognizes the physical drive as a reserved logical drive and it will
not report the drive to the system BIOS.
When user selects to create a RAID set, spare drive, or JBOD, he or she has to
select size for the set or drive. BIOS will set a default size for it and user can use
the and keys to change the size. If the physical drive has never been used to
create a set or drive by the BIOS before, the full size of the physical drive will be
set as default size. Otherwise, BIOS will set default size to the size it saved in the
reserved area of the physical drive before.
If the user wants to increase the default size, BIOS will display a warning
message in the help window and for user’s response
before changing the default size.

• Server 10.4.7 booting to a RAID1 after clone not working

So I jumped in an replaced the hard drives in the server box, a PPC MDD single 1.25 Ghz maching running Server 10.4.7.
I replaced the Hard drives, booted to the install DVD, zeroed all of them, created 2 RAID 1 (mirrored) and cloned my working backup back onto the System Raid (booting raid). from an external FW drive.
When booting I get the grey screen w/ the Apple and the gears, then the 'Starting Mac OS Server' screen comes up, then all I get is a blue screen, nothing on it, with a curser. Thats it.
There was nothing changed from the original system (2 raids from 4 drives) and all I did was swap out the drives, recreate the raid, clone a blah, crap.
I can boot of teh external FW drive that I cloned over, and all work fine.
Did I miss something?
Thanks for any help.
Spinner

Additional Info:
One of the System Raid drives failed, so I pulled it out, erased the drive, and cloned back the System to the single drive from the external HD.
It still will not boot to it. I get the grey screen w/ the gears, then a blue screen w/ the gears, then the 'starting Server screen, with no progress bar, then just a blue screen w/ a curser. Thats it, no desktop, Nada.
So to get everyone working today I have the system booted to the external drive, and have successfully reset teh sharepoints on the 2nd raid setup (data).
Any thoughts why I cannot take a bootable clone and put it on to a raid (it came from a raid) nor can I put it on a single disk and boot to it.
What am I missing
There is a Sonnet ATA/133 card for the HD's installed.
All drives have jumper settings for cable select.

• Conversion of ad20 non raid to a D20 raid 1 and keeping existing OS/data

I have a new D20 with windows 7-x64 pre installed on it.  I purchased a second Lenovo supplied sata add in drive to convert the system to raid 1.
When I add the  “raid 1” in support in the bios,  the system when it reboots does not recognize the existing windows 7 partition.
When I used “other mfg” on board raid configuration, the working partition was considered the master partition and was automatically mirrored to the  new added drive (making it raid1)
My expectation was that there would be either a “thinkvantage” tool that allowed you to do this from the OS, or there would be a some OS add on tool that performs this function
So my question..  Can you convert a d20 non raid to a D20 raid 1 (given drives are the same etc), and if so (I am a glass half full person), what is the process required to do so.
thanks
matt k.

if the marvell RAID controller hasn't been enabled, you'll need to install the driver.   it can be found here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-73697
after this is installed, boot into the D20 BIOS and enable RAID.   reboot again into the unconfigured drive and see if you can get into windows.   if so, you can set up your RAID 1 array.
if you want to control RAID configuration from within windows, you'll need to install the marvell RAID utility found here: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-73073

• Using IDE3 in non-RAID setup

Hi
I have a few questions regarding my setup which I hope some users who have or have had the same configuration can answer for me?  I know that this post may turn out to be a bit long but I really would appreciate some help and answers from users who have been down this road please.
System:
MSI 875P Neo FIS2R (no overclocking)
Intel 2.40C Ghz P4 (800Mhz)
BIOS 1.7
Nvidia FX5200 AGP 8x
LG CDRW on IDE1 (Master)
LG DVD on IDE1 (Slave)
IDE2 - Nothing installed
Maxtor 20GB ATA133 on IDE3 (Master - Non-RAID)
Maxtor 80GB ATA133 on IDE3 (Slave)
With thanks to "mdc007", I have just setup my two Maxtor drives which were previously installed on IDE1, on IDE3 as master and slave, using the following method:
Enabled Promise controller in BIOS, setup Promise IDE "as S-ATA", boot into XP, install S-ATA drivers from Device Manager and reboot.  Made sure drivers were installed.  Turned off computerm connected Maxtor hard drives to IDE3 and turn on computer.  enter BIOS and select Maxtor master drive as first boot device and then F10 to save and exit.
Everything worked just fine but I noticed on the POST screen that I had 1st IDE master/slave (CDRW/DVD), 2nd IDE master/slave (not installed), 3rd IDE master/slave (not installed), 4th IDE master/slave.
The drives on IDE3 are shown in Device Manager and I have a SCSI RAID Promise 378 S-ATA in Device Manager.  The drives also appear to be opering correctly in XP.
Q:  As my hard drives are on IDE3, why are they not shown on the POST screen?
(Note - both drives were shown on the next screen with UDMA6)
Q:  Also in the mainboard BIOS, the drives are not shown connected to IDE3.  Why?  I tried choosing "AUTO" but that made no difference.
Q:  With reference to the HDD LED, I was aware that the LED did not work with S-ATA drives on the Promise Controller at the moment but, although the HDD LED is on during POST, it shows no activity when booting into to XP or once on the desktop.  Is this correct?
Q:  With reference to the Intel IAA and IAA RAID latest software versions, I tried installing these and got a message which said something like "no compatible devices - software not supported on this chipset".  Has anyone got this software to install or am I installing the incorrect version?
Q:  I downloaded the correct version of IAA and I can't understand why it won't install so, which chipset is the message referring to?
Q:  I have seen mention of the Intel 82801EB Ultra ATA Storage Controller, which my 875P has, and also the Intel 82801ER.  Which board has the 82801ER?
Q:  With reference to the "On chip ATA(s) Operate Mode" in the BIOS, with my setup as shown above, I would appreciate advice from users who have this setup working ok, about which options are best to enable/disable in this area:
* Mode:  Legacy or Native?
* ATA Configuration:  Disabled/P-ATA only/S-ATA only/P-ATA + S-ATA/Both
* S-ATA Keep  enabled: Yes/No
* P-ATA Keep enabled:  Yes/No?
* P-ATA Channel Selection:  Primary/Secondary/Both?
* Combined Mode Option:  P-ATA 1st Channel/S-ATA st Channel?
(this option depends on what other options you have choen above)
* S-ATA Ports Definition:  PO-1st / P1-2nd - PO-2nd / P1-1st
                                          PO-3rd / P1-4th - PO-4th / P1-3rd
(this option also depends on what other options you have chsoen above)
Q:  With reference to PNP/PNP Configuration Option in the BIOS, with my new setup, should PCI IDE Bus Mastering be enabled?
BTW, about an hour after running my drives from IDE, I attempted to install the new drivers for the WinXP Promise SATA378 IDE Controller (from v1.00.16 to v1.00.29) and after reboot, the pc just kept rebooting and i had to choose "last known good configuration" and then once in windows, I got my first 'blue screen' with a message something like "IRQ less or equal to" etc, etc.  Don't know if that relevant or not?
Regards

To answer a few of your questions,
Reason you can't see the devices on the Promise controller in the Bios is because the Promise controller has its own separate Bios(that's the one you get into by hitting control-F. The only link the main Bios has to it is the 1 setting(disabled, SATA, Raid). Also, you'll see the Promise devices listed in the boot devices setting although with unusual prefixes like "BBS Device 0" or something like that.
Note that the 1st-4th channels listed in the standard Cmos Features are for the Intel controller only(IE: 2IDE channels + 2SATA channels)
I know that the HDD light DOES NOT work for ANY SATA devices. I haven't used my IDE3 yet but it sounds like it doesn't work for that either. As far as I know, there is no work-around for this. Unbelievable, isn't it?
For your setup:
Native Mode for WinXP
Pata Only (you're not using the SATA's)
Keep SATA enabled: Yes(only if you are overclocking and can't lock AGP/PCI frequency. Don't know why, but this has worked for many of us.)
Pata enabled should be greyed out with above settings.
Pata channels: Just primary if that's all you're using but "both" would work too.
Combined Mode: greyed out
SATA ports def: greyed out or leave default.
Not 100% sure on your other questions but I think IAA is not required on this board and IAA-Raid version will only install if you have the controller configured for Raid in the Bios. I don't think you need either with your setup. I don't have either installed atm.
I'm not sure of the difference between the 82801EB & ER but device manager lists all the 82801EB devices for me and everything seems fine.
Hope that helps out a little.
Didn't see Danny's post above when I wrote this but I pretty much agree with everything. I have Bus Mastering on but only because it sounded like a good thing   and everything seems fine with it on. (I think I read somewhere that it speed up data transfers when you're running in DOS-IE: Booting Ghost or Drive Image etc off the CD/Floppy). Never really tested though.

• P6N SLI Platinum - How to convert to RAID with existing non-RAID Windows 2003?

I built up my Windows 2003 machine on a single SATA drive and didn't load the RAID driver thinking I could convert later.  Now I want to RAID 1 a second Raptor but I can't seem to get it to work.
I've loaded the RAID drivers in the OS, enabled the RAID functionality in the BIOS, and set the existing drive to be a single striped drive.  I found some references that said that might work.  Once you get a single striped RAID 0 drive you are supposed to be able to convert from RAID 0 to RAID 1 when you add a second drive.
But I don't get that far.  It won't boot when I change the BIOS from non-RAID to RAID.  The OS flashes a quick blue screen message about no boot device or driver being found and keeps rebooting.  I'm able to get into the RAID section of the boot process to do the configuration from a single standard drive to a single striped drive, I just can't boot into the OS after that.
Anyone know a way to do this?

Quote from: Maesus on 23-April-07, 22:03:06
what is your 1st HDD is it the same raptor as your 2nd one?
Also, try this tips : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314082/en-us
Yes, the Raptors are exactly the same.  I had them in a hardware RAID configuration on my previous motherboard.
My OS is Win2003 so I'm not sure the XP article will apply, but thanks for the reference.  It may lead me in the right direction.

• Diamond Plus- Silicon Image controller set up single SATA 2 non raid "HELP"

Could somebody please tell me what drivers exactly do you have to load for Windows install off of the floppy? I loaded the silcon image 32 drivers at the install but the boot into windows takes a long time ! In bios SATA 1 SATA 2  are enabled -non raid for Silicon Image controller. Is their any kind of special procedure or trick for  for useing the the controller non raid mode? Just added another HDD to my system formatted first with WD Lifeguard Tools and  unhooked my othet drives and 1 of my dvd burners but for some reason It took like 2hrs 20 min too load windows when I specified additional drives their wer like 4-5 to choose from and the only non raid refference 1 was the first which I belive silicon image sys32 do you have to install all of them like the nvidea ones? man I had absolutely no problems setting up my 2- 80gb WD Caviars in raid 0 but the new 250gb WD caviar se16 is another story. ALL ARE SATA 2 DRIVES  so I know that SATA 2 works on my board im useing it right now! Could any of the lLocal Forum Gurus with prior experience with the controller tell me exactly how to configure the set up NON RAID!  PLLLLLLEASE.........
                                                      Thanks in advance

Thanks for all of you help Bas, and the quick responce! I was asking  about which would be the prefered set up  raid 0 on silicon image  and sigle drive non raid on port 3-4 Nvidea or vice versa. I'm sure that it is a matter of prefference, but I do plan to overclock slightly when it cools down and I have done more reading on it! My primary goal is Stabilily and performance in harmonic balance whith out data corruption, or risking blowing things up! Any way hows life in Belgium? I have yet to travel to Europe, traveled to just about all of the states and lived on 2 of the Hawaiian Islands. So as you can tell Bas I am more partial to warm weather. I am quite a bit more in tuned with European culture than most people. My folks are from Australia and New Zealand so i'm not youre typical American! • Recovering data after factory reset (security issue)

Hello there,
Recently a friend of mine asked me how to erase all data on an iPhone ? I pointed to him to "factory reset".
Now, I see a bunch of websites that show how to recover data after factory reset using their software, not sure if they work as advertised or not.
What I would like to know is if the user wants the data to be erased and non-recoverable, is this the best option or if there is any other option available in iPhone that can make the data un-recoverable. We want to make sure the data is un-recoverable after factory reset.
thanks
Ashish Shah

unfortunately this doesn't answer my question.
I do know the option to "erase all content and settings" in iPhone.
What I want to know is to make sure once done, no one can recover that data back. Since this phone will be sold off to some stranger, we don't want them to have access to the data.
Here are a few websites from my just preliminary search results that show how to recover data.
just google "extracting data after factory reset iPhone" and you will see a bunch of websites offering their products to recover. So I want to check if this is so simple, how can we really make sure the data is wiped off clean.

• K7N2-ISLR, IDE3 for non-RAID HDD

Hello,
Can I use IDE3 to support a non-RAID drive? If so, how do I set this up.
IDE1 has two 40 GB drives
IDE2 has CD-RW and DVD
I'd like to add a Maxtor 120 GB drive, but can't figure out how to set it up.
Any help would be appreciated...b

Using IDE3 requires you to set it up as a raid device, but it's not a problem. Just connect the drive, boot up, press F1 when it asks to configure for RAID, and use RAID 0. It'll work just fine there.

• K8N Diamond Plus SiI 3132 WinXP x64 non-RAID drivers?

Hi
I'm looking for non-RAID drivers for the SiI 3132 on my K8N Diamond Plus for WinXP x64 (I managed to fine the x32 ones and they work fine so I know it's not the drives or the moboard.  I tried the drivers on MSI's website.
I've searched around the forum and followed the leads onto planetamd64 and the Asus website for them, but to no avail.
To be precise, I have selected non-RAID in the BIOS, and the drives to show up on on the POST screen, but do not appear in Win 64; there is the classic exclamation mark in the device manager for a 'Mass Storage Device'.  I don't want to concatenate the drives in RAID mode, so I did not try booting with that selected in the BIOS lest it destroy the stuff I have on them.
[I miss the simple JBOD option in the 3114...]
Any help gratefully appreciated!
thx
bn

Hi all,
I solved the problem.
You won't find the drivers under the drivers section of SiI's website but you will in the Knowledge Base.  Look under Serial ATA | COntrollers | SiI3132, you'll find article 11043 'SATA 64 bit Windows IDE driver - released' dated 8/19/05.  Click under that and you'll find a file 3132_win64_idrv_1004_logo.zip.  It's what you need.
Hope this helps someone.

• HELP! How can i restore/recover files from Bootcamp with Boot Failure - Missing operating system error?

Hi,
I am having a few problems with bootcamp on my imac. When i tried to move the bootcamp partition on windows 7 into free space, it crashed and turned off. Ever since i have had the error 'Missing operating system' and it fails to boot. I have some very important files on the bootcamp partition. Is it possible to recover these files or even to restore the bootcamp partition to it's original state? I do not have a backup of my bootcamp partition. Another problem i have is that ever since i tried to expand my macintosh HD partition into free space, when i hold alt while booting up (to choose which partition to boot like i normally do), the bootcamp partition has stopped appearing. This means that i cannot even boot the windows 7 bootcamp partition anymore!
So basically here are my 2 questions:
How can i restore/recover files from Bootcamp with Boot Failure - Missing operating system error?
How can i make the Bootcamp partition appear in Startup Disk and when i hold the option key while starting up my computer to allow me to boot windows 7?
Any solutions are very much apreciated!
Thanks!
I know that bootcamp (disk0s4) hasn't been fully deleted since it appears in disk utility (i cant do anything to it though)
And here is the error i see when i try to launch bootcamp (back when i was actually able to boot up bootcamp to the error screen)

WinClone 3 is OS X and saves Windows image it makes for restore - that should work but you will have to try and you would need to make a new image unless it also works with a native Windows system restore image. It is now supported and has come a long way.
http://www.twocanoes.com/
Paragon Clone OS works and does disk-to-disk clone just like CCC you end up with two bootable drives. But does not work with your setup. It would let you clone and move your Windows install to an SSD or another disk drive though and be bootable.
During its clone process it checks for errors which is very helpful and lets you know - something CCC and others should adopt more of.
http://www.paragon-software.com/downloads/demo.html
I wish for our/my sake you had re-read and rewritten the long 'story' and broken it into a brief list of facts we needed.
OS X
Windows
Backup (though external is much safer) and you want bootable OS X clones as well as TimeMachine
https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
https://support.apple.com/kb/HT1553
There are a number of things to do like chkdsk and others as well as Windows DVD to do automatic system repairs and find out why.
AppleHFS - the abilty to mount and read HFS volumes can be notorious.
I would rearrange and redo your storage setup and how you use the 4-5 internal hard drive bays.

• How to recover photos after restoring iPod touch?

Yesterday, there was an update for the iOS 6, I believe. When I pressed the update button, a message popped up saying that there was a problem with my iPod touch 4G and that I need to restore it. I had absolutely no idea why that message would pop up in the first place because my iPod was working just fine. But I couldn't update my iPod to the newest version if I didn't do what iTunes says... so I was about to restore my iPod, but then I was worried that all of my photos would disappear. So I decided to update my iOS later so that I could transfer all my files on to my computer. I then unplugged my iPod, and tried to turn it on but the home screen wouldn't pop - no matter what I did, all the screen showed was an itunes icon on top with a USB plug-in cord at the bottom. So I had no choice but to restore my iPod. The thing is, once I restored my iPod and all, my photos were all gone and I did not use iCloud as a back-up since a few months ago. All of my recent photos are now gone and I have no idea how to recover them. I've tried programs that aim to recover deleted photos, but they didn't work.
Is there a way to recover photos after restoring the iPod Touch?

Hello,
It is very important to backup your device to the computer before updating or restoring.
You can restore your device to a previous backup, all the photos that were there when you made the backup should return with it, but I'm afraid that any photos taken or saved after the last backup are unrecoverable.
I hope this helps.

• External firewire 800 disk: Raid or non Raid?

Hi all,
I am currently about to by a new external firwire 800 hard disk to replace my firewire 400 200GB Maxtor. I mainly use this disk for timemachine backups and all my final cut express scratch area and work area. I am working with AVCHD video and looking to expand the storage and speed of this disk. I have narrowed my options down to two. They are both high quality options. I will be buying the enclosure and hard disks seperatly to ensure I get a good enclosure and good quality hard disk drive.
Enclosure options:
1. http://www.macpower.com.tw/products/hdd3/pleiades/pd_scombo.
Pleiades Super S-Combo, FireWire 400/800, USB 2.0, and eSATA interfaces. This enclosure uses Oxford 934DSb or Oxford 924DSb chipset. This is a single drive enclosure and non Raid. I would put a 1TB disk in this enclosure.

Taurus Raid II enclosure. FireWire 400/800, USB 2.0 and USB 1.0 interfaces. This enclosure uses Oxford 934DSb or Oxford 924DSb chipset. This is a dual drive enclosure and Raid 0 and 1. I would put a two 500GB disks in this enclosure. But will use with mirroring such that a copy of data will reside on each disk. Whilst this will reduce the overal capacity to 500GB I will have the extra redundancy should a drive fail. From which I can just replace the failed drive.
I am aware that using Raid mirroring will slow down the data transfer to the disk enclosure but I think this should be ok for AVCHD editing for my purposes. Cost wise there is not much difference between the two options. In both options I will go for either Seagate Baracuda drive or Samsung Spinpoint.
Would like to know what your thoughts are?
Which options would you go for?

Hi all,
Ok so I decided to not go done the raid mirriring route. Instead I finally made a decision and boughts a Macpower FW800 enclousre which uses the Oxford 934 chipset and a Samsung HD103UJ 1TB Serial ATA 3.0 Gbps
buffer memory32 MB hard disk.
The enclosure is excellent quality and the disk access is very quick via FW800. The disk itself is very quiet and also great for Final Cut with my HD editing. Only noise the disk makes is upon power up other than that it is very quiet.
I have partitioned th disk into two 500GB's. One partition is used for time machine backups and the other is the Final Cut scratch space.
I plan to buy another enclosure and 1TB disk and parition into two 500GB's also. I plan to use one of the 500GB's for Super Duper clone of iMac system hard disk and the second for cloning/backing up the scratch Final Cut space. This second disk and enclosure will be my offline backup system and will not be powered all the time.
Details of the elcousre and hard disk are provided below. I purchased them in the UK. Enclosure was purchased from www.span.com and hard disk from www.ebuyer.com. Whilst span can sell disks in the enclosure you can save yourself a little money and buy seperatly from ebuyer and install yourself.

• Firefox only works after I re-boot my computer

I just got a new computer last week. It is running Windows 8 - 64 bit. I installed Firefox, used it for a week, set up my bookmarks, etc. and it worked fine. The other day when I logged in and opened Firefox, I couldn't click on anything - nothing would happen - it was like it was frozen. I went into Internet Explorer and also into Google Chrome and they both worked fine - I could click on things and it would do what it was supposed to do. So, I re-booted my computer and then Firefox worked fine. Same thing the next day, Firefox only worked after I re-booted my computer...and also today, same thing. Why is it frozen when I first go into it, but if I re-boot the whole computer, it works? Has me baffled. Any help would be appreciated, because it is my favorite browser. But if this keeps up, I won't be using it anymore. Thank you!
I have my home page set to Yahoo, so that's where it goes when I open it. When I get there, I can't click on my e-mail, nothing in the toolbar, it's totally frozen.

Hello,
Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).
If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:
*In Firefox 29.0 and above, click the menu button , click Help and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
*In previous Firefox versions, click on the Firefox button at the top left of the Firefox window and click on Help (or click on Help in the Menu bar, if you don't have a Firefox button) then click on Restart with Add-ons Disabled.
If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:
* On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
* On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode <br>(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".

Hello ROBLAHAY,
I'm sorry to hear you are having this issue with your MacBook Air. I also apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact configuration you are describing. If you are talking about using two external Thunderbolt displays (in addition to the internal display) with your Mid 2011 MacBook Air 11-inch, you may want to be aware that only a single external Thunderbolt display is supported on that model, as noted in the following article:
3. How many Apple Thunderbolt Displays can I use with my Mac in OS X?
The table below indicates how many Thunderbolt displays can be connected to Thunderbolt-capable Mac computers in OS X.
