Recovering Video File when Quicktime 7.6.6 relaunches

Hi
I was in the middle of a wonderful interview with a Human Rights Activist when Quicktime QUIT unexpectedly. I relaunched the program and continued the interview on another file. Only now I cannot find first file anywhere. Anyone know if it's possible to recover lost video files? Looked in trash, files are garbage, no movie exists. Help!
Lolo

Update: The problem only happens with MacOS 10.5.6. Running the pre-installed MacOS 10.5.5 the 9400M and 9600M displays movies smoothly using QuickTime 7.6. Disabling hardware-accelerated playback by deleting the "AppleVAH264HW.component" in "/System/Library/Quicktime" also "solves" the problem.

  • Best software to recover video files on reformatted SD and CF Cards? Or worth seeking professional help?

    Hi all,
The person I work for has mistakenly re-formatted a collection of SD and CF cards (incl. Sony F3, AJA Ki Pro Mini). He needs to recover video files.
Is it worth it to have the cards professionally recovered at a place like Tekserve, or is there a software program anybody here has had success with? There seems to be a lot of recovery software out there and it's hard to tell what's trustworthy. I should mention that the software doesn't have to be free, it just has to be effective and cheaper than a professional recovery.
A few other stray but important questions:
-What are the risks of running a recovery program that fails? In other words is it possible for software to damage the old data so that no other program has a chance of successfully recovering it?
-Most importantly: is it possible to recover at least some data from a card that has been reformatted and then recorded over a bit, but not all the way? I have read that if the whole card has been recorded over, the old data is irretrievable. But there's only a little bit of new material on this card.
    Thanks!

Reformating storage devices usually involves deleting the catalog that tells the OS where files start and end. The files are still there unless you have chosen a secure erase where the systems writes zeros over the whole drive several times (sometimes known as a DoD format).
What this means is as long as you do not try to write to the media, the files are still there. Best practice would be to clone the media then work on the clone. This way you do not introduce any addiional changes.
The more important element of your question is "can I get these files that still exist off the the media?". The answer is a resounding "maybe".
I have used FileSalvage to try to recover material from a failing hard drive. It was pretty successful with small files (Word docs, Acrobat files, Adobe Illustrator images and the like)  but considerably less successful with large video files. I believe it is because video is more sensitive to end of file (eof) markers and if those are not found, the whole file is useless.
If you have reused the card, the chances of getting anything go WAY down as the way files are written to storage devices is not that orderly. Bits get written all over the drive/ flash storage. When there is no catalog to tell the OS what memory locations have a purpose, new files can be written over multiple old files. Will this completely remove any chance to recover your material? Most likely, but if you are purchasing software anyway it will not cost you any additional cost to try on those cards. You might get lucky.
Also, in the locking the barn after the paddle is lost upstream, this is why I always create two copies of the contents of cards before I start editing. 1 copy goes on the on-line editing RAID and the other copy go to an archive drive. Then once a week, I'll back up the archive drives in the studio to a set off-site. This way I have 3 copies while I'm working and 2 copies once the project is closed out. Given the low price of hard drives, it's easy to create redundant backups.
    Good luck,
    x

MS word keeps crashing on my macbook air. it tries to recover all files when I try to open it then immediately crashes or freezes. It's ms word 2011 and I'm running OS X 10.7.5

I am having the same problem. When I save a document in word, particularly with track changes and comments, it freezes and crashes. I fould this forum as I was reading help posted in a previous forum and the "helping" comments were saying this must be a problem on the user end - but that can't be right as so many people are posting this problem. Its clearly an incompatibility between the software from two competing companies. Figure it out Apple!

  • Photoshop CC will not import any video files when I try Video Frame to Layers and New Video Layer from File

Specifically I'm trying to import a .MOV I made in Quicktime. The file opens up everywhere else so it's not an issue with the file being corrupted. The error message I get from CC is
"Could not complete command _____________ because the video file could not be opened."
As far as I know I didn't save the .MOV with any permissions, but then again I have very limitted understanding of Quicktime. Originally the file was a .GIF that I converted to an .MOV because I wanted to edit the GIF using the video timeline instead of the animation timeline.
    Thanks for the help.
Also, as an aside since I know a lot of Adobe employees are on here, the animation timeline is pretty crummy, there should be a way that you can open a .GIF into the video timeline as a video layer.

Did the back and forth between PC and Mac file systems screw up my files somehow?
Yes. Unfortunately the move has almost certainly caused the loss of the resource data that would have been (invisibly) attached to those files.
By adding a specific .mov extension after the fact you will have helped the Mac correctly identify the file type / asscoiations but also significantly you will have physically changed the filename eg from "clip" to "clip.mov". This means that when you come to reconnect the media in FCP , then FCP will be looking for files that no longer exist at the given path eg when specifically looking for our example clip called "clip" of course it won't find it.
Try this as a test... first remove the ".mov" extension from one or more of the clips, select those clips and press Cmd-Opt-I to open an Info window for the selection. You'll see an "Open with:" popup and in that popup you should choose QuickTime Player (if its a Unix Executable then it will initially list Terminal as the appropriate app, you have to choose Other... then in the open dialog choose Enable > All Applications and then navigate to and select the Quicktime Player app as the appropriate app). After you've done that restart FCP and see if you can now reconnect to those clips.

  • Recovered video files that won't play!

I have recently used a thrid party software to recover deleted video files from an external hard drive. The recovered files will now no longer play in quicktime, any suggestions on how to fix this?

Dunno- could be that some are made with a way older version of Quicktime., might be a little corrupt.  Try doing a "Get info" on the movie in question (Command+I) and in the window that appears there, go to "open with " and choose Quicktime, then Change all. Failing that try VLC (videolanclient. org, I think) it should open pretty much everything

  • Final Cut 5 - Won't recognize video files when I try to reconnect media

Help! Somehow FCP5 no longer recognizes my clips as video files.
The problem started when I transferred some clips to another drive so I could reformat my primary external drive. (It's new, and had been formatted for PC, and I felt I needed to reformat it for Mac.) I moved the files off the drive using my PC, held them on another external PC-formatted drive, then used MacDrive 7 to put them back once the formatting was done.
When I plugged the newly formatted drive back in, my Mac no longer recognized the files as video files because the file extension had been removed... It thought they were "Unix executable files." I added ".mov" to the end of the file names and they then seemed to work fine in QuickTime.
But FCP will not recognize them now... At first, when I try to "reconnect media," they are grayed out; when I select "All files" in the Reconnect Media dialog and they appear to be available. But when I choose one nothing happens and it goes back to the Reconnect Media dialog.

  • Opening video files with Quicktime X

I upgraded to Snow Leopard with Quicktime X. When I first did that, most video files I clicked on still opened with my old version of Quicktime (7?) rather than Quicktime X. So, I deleted my old version of Quicktime, thinking that would force Quicktime X to open the files. Wrong. Now when I click on a video file, nothing happens. I can open the file using Quicktime X, but I have to open Quicktime X first, then find the file I want to open in the Finder. Surely I should be able to simply click on the file first and have Quicktime X open it, no? (E.g., if I click on a video in iPhoto, nothing happens. But if I open QT X first, I can then use QT X to open the same file and play the video.) Help?

That should work. Also, just to add. I would not necessarily delete quicktime 7 especially if you had upgraded to pro. If you did then you may note that Snow leopard installer moved 7 to utilities. I have found that QT7 can sometimes play movies when QT X can't - it has to do with the fact that QT 7 and QT 10 don't have identical sets of codecs (at least that what those guys in the know tell me). So if you still have access to it keep it you can then use it if the later QT version can't play something. It won't interfere with anything you just have to designate if you want a particular file or type of file to be always opened by QT 7 as opposed to QT X which is the default app

  • How do I relink my video files when the source files are located in an AVCHD folder structure?

I am using FCP X 10.1.1 and I was completely done with editing a simple multicam video for a choir track and when I was exporting it it failed. I re-opened FCPX and found that there are several missing files, when I had just been working with them just a second ago! I know about relinking video files, but when I try to locate the source files (knowing where they are), the browser will not let me select ACHD file contents to get at the video files. Also, I cannot open the Library file for my project either.
    Here is a snap shot:

If it comes down to it, use clip wrap to carve your .mov files out of the SD. I am confused tho - if you were originally able to import all you needed and still have the original media ? Why can't you do it again to add other clips? To "get in" to your Library, control click on it>show paskage... but do NOT MOVE anything only copy.
Perhaps soeone else can shed light on this?

  • IPod Classic 160GB - Lost Of Music & Video Files When Connected To iTunes

I currently have the latest model of the Apple iPod Classic. It's been working great until I decided to connect it to my laptop, to use iTunes. I've done this so many times before without having any problems. Until recently that is.
My laptop and iTunes are able to read my iPod, but when it shows up on iTunes the music and video section disappears. Only 'Other' and 'Free' shows on the ipod's GB stats, with only 148 GB left to use. Before this happened, I had only 110 GB or so to use, maybe even less, since I had tons of music and video files stored. Also downloaded games, which also disappeared.
I thought iTunes was the problem, but when I disconnected my iPod, I searched through it manually, and found that all of music, videos, and games are gone, it's like I didn't put anything in it. The only thing that stayed, was the notes, other than that everything vanished. Is there a way to retrieve my old music, video, and game files back? I tried looking into the hidden files of the ipod itself, and went into 'ipod_control' then to music, but every single folder was empty, all 'F' folders.
I am deeply frustrated about this. I really hope there are solutions out there to help me, without having to re do everything.
Forgot to add, don't know if this will help but, when I connected the iPod to iTunes, there was a pop up message saying something like 'CheeziPuffs cannot be found or played on your iPod' I have never had this pop up message before when the ipod worked perfectly on iTunes.

I am having the same problem. Sometimes I get an error code and sometimes I don't. I tried to get apple to do something about it however mine is also out of warranty so no luck. I have read about a lot a people having syncing issues like this with their ipod classic and I am kind of amazed that apple is not willing to fix this issue. If I get it fixed or have any luck with apple I will post here. Good Luck.

  • Iphoto does not recognize video files when the iphoto library is on an external drive

I have copied my iphoto library to an external hard drive. I pointed iPhoto to the new location. I can import photos with no problem, but when I try to import video files (from my iPhone or from another drive) I get a message that the file is not recognized. When I moved the iphoto library back to the MAC hard drive, the import works OK both for photos and videos.
I am using iphoto 11 and all the videos were taken with my iphone.
    Any ideas?

Video could be imported from an iPhone before the library was copied to an external drive.
The video that was imported before the library was moved could be read before and after the library was moved to an external drive.
Video from the same iPhone cannot be imported into the library once the library had moved ton an external drive.
The problem is that video can no longer be imported into the library that was moved to an external drive. Photos from the same iPhone can be imported and read.

  • Firefox will not play .ogv video files when loaded from a server. Does anyone have any answers that will fix this?

I've read the suggestions for fixing this, and none of them work. I've updated my .htaccess to match MIME types for .ogv, I've uploaded the files as both Binary and ASCII, neither method works. The .ogv file plays fine when you load it from a local file, but it will not play when viewed from a remote server. I've confirmed with my hosting company that the .htaccess and all other issues for HTML5 are up-to-date. Safari and Chrome play the HTML5 videos just fine, but Firefox will not. Does anyone have any concrete answers as to what the problem is. I'm also serving up the video files as .webm and .mp4, but neither of these formats works in Firefox either.

That can happen if the server isn't configured properly to send the files with a by Firefox supported MIME type.
Did you check via the Web Console which headers Firefox receives when requesting the .ogv file?
If that is OK then it is possible that the file is using an unsupported coding method.

  • What codec do I need to view a native Final Cut Pro video file in Quicktime

Greetings all. My video editor provided me with a video file in the native Final Cut Pro format to save time as he could not convert to a .mov file. He said that he is able to open it in Quick Time Pro. I tried opening it in Quick Time Pro but I can just hear the audio. I am guessing it is a Codec issue as I my operating system is Vista (sorry!), and therefore I don't have Final Cut Pro installed. Any suggestions regarding what I need to do to be able to view the video in QT would be highly appreciated. Thanks!
My ultimate objective is to open it in QT Pro and convert it to a QT Movie, so I can then convert it to Flash Video for online streaming.

Ask the creator to send you an H.264 version of the file. The current file can't be viewed on a PC and there are no PC versions of the codec.
