Recovery after remote tech spam Satellite C650D

My brother was using his new C650D (win 7 64) when tech spam called and convinced him to go to their site
and download software which allowed them to take remote control, then proceeded to convince him he had
problems and then asked for money. Finally after they asked for money he got smart and got off the phone.
Will using the software recovery image stored on the hard disk eliminate any software that may have been downloaded by these spam techs? If not then would ordering and installing the recovery disks work?

Satellite C650D constantly reboots

Hello,
I have a Toshiba Satellite C650D with Windows 7 Home Prem, and today I was browsing on the net. When my computer started to slow down. When I shut it down and tried to boot it with the startup repair option, it was loading for 1 sec and it went to a black screen with the white cursor. So far I have tried the following with F8 at start up:
Launching startup repair doesn't work, I keep getting a black screen with a white cursor.
Starting windows normally reboots the computer.
I also tried safe mode, no luck it also reboots the computer.
Disabeling automatic restart on system failure gives me a BSOD with the following message: UNMOUTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
So far I read that my only option is to reinstall windows 7? My computer didn't come with any windows 7 Cds.
Also, is there a way I can backup my files if it comes down to reinstalling everything?

It sounds like you have two options. You could try recovery discs to see if they'll work, or you could try replacing the hard drive (which will still require recovery discs). If you didn't create recovery discs, you'll have to order them. It's possible that they won't help if the hard disk has failed, however.
If it's under warranty, I'd suggest contacting customer support. If it's no longer under warranty, I'd suggest ordering recovery media and trying them. If they don't work, replace the hard drive and then use the recovery media with the new drive.

Can I save a Toshiba recovery after years of use?

I saved a recovery when the computer was new, but that saved copy is not available now. Can I save a recovery again, even after years of use? I am having computer problems, so i plan to do a system restore and hope that all returns OK to an earlier good version. Before I start that system restore, however, I would like to have a recovery point saved as a backup in case the system restore does not work properly. I will start that system restore in a few hours, so any quick replies will be much appreciated. Thanks!

That's fine, but you still need the recovery discs for possible use when, for instance, you need to restore to a new hard disk.
The answer is Yes you can. For instructions, see the section Creating recovery media, which begins on p. 65 of the User's Guide.

Need a boot disc & drives: Toshiba Satellite C650D-008

I deleted the backup partition that had the drives for my Toshiba Satellite C650D-008.
(To long a story to explain why.)
I had used the computer for a Linux O/S.
Now I want to load a retail -off the self- version of Windows 7 I purchased.
If possible I would like a link to a web-site were I can download a boot disc and drivers for free.
(preferably without the bells and whistles, media etc. )
I have very poor bandwidth here so a bittorrent might be the best bet, along with hash code numbers.
The aforementioned machine is a Canadian Market model, and there does not seem to be a source
for drivers from Toshiba Canada's download site. (The Toshiba model I have is not shown on other

Recovery of 8.1 for Satellite S55-A5176 will not successfully activate windows 8.1

A couple of days ago I rebooted the laptop as it was funning a little slow. Upon reboot I was forced to do a recovery after trying a few of the suggestions on the troubleshooting screen. I went through the recovery process with my recovery disks and since then reinstalled my software apps and files.
I am getting failure on activating Windows 8.1.
My machine is a S55-A5176
I have had it for just over a year. Not sure what caused the failure, but now I can't successfully complete the updates of the OS or activate it.
I don't get a phone number on the screen. Just the following:
Windows can't activate right now.
Try again later. If that doesn't work, contact support.
The link, "See support info online" doesn't do anything.
I also tried running the process from the command line, 'slui.exe 4' but it doesn't do anything after answering United States for country.
Am I stuck with having to try the revocery over again.

Can you burn new recovery discs? Or maybe make a flash drive this time.

Problem with Rescue and Recovery after installing Norton Internet Security 2010

Hi all.
It's my first time in this forum.
I have a problem, with Rescue and Recovery, after installing Norton Internet Security 2010 on my T43.
The message I get it:
"Rescue and Recovery is unable to back up the file 'C:\Documents and settings\all Users\Application Data\ Norton\ 00000082\00000109\000003c1\cltMLS1.bat' Because the file is either corrupted or being used by another application. Please close any application that could be using the file.
I tried to close the Norton but I couldn't find how.

Hi and welcome to the forum,
the reason for this situation is, that the antivir files are protected from being modified.
This is the reason, why this file cannot be backed up. I assume, that you would get much more such messages, as there are surelly multiple files files, that are protected like this.
So the solution is to block folders from being archived. Please start RnR application and in the configuration set this folder as the excluded one.
This will skip the backup of this file and will fix your situation.
Please let me know, if you have covered this.

Hi Branko,
After the system copy, go to transaction SALE -> Sending and receiving Systems -> Logical systems -> Define Logical System , click New Entries and create a new logical system for your QAS; then go to SALE -> Sending and receiving Systems -> Logical systems -> Assign Client to Logical System, click on the client, click change and assign the new Logical system.
Other activities, check Jobs, RFC's, etc...

10000: PPPoE session recovery after reload

We have seen that there are a feature that recover the PPPoE sessions closed in one side and up in the other. This feature is called 'PPPoE Session Recovery After Reload '.
In the feature navigator, we can see that this feature is available for 7200 series. It seems not available for 10000.
But in the release notes of Cisco IOS 12.3(7)XI3,

PPP PADT messages are not sent by a PPPoX PTA router to a client when the PPPoX user is no longer connected to the PPPoX PTA router.
This feature is enabled only within the BBA Group configuration using:
bba-group pppoe pppoe1
sessions auto cleanup
This issue can occur when a Cisco 10000 Series router is used as a PPPoX PTA router, and there has been a network flap causing the PPPoX users to lose their connections. PPPoE will experience this issue when BBA Groups are in use. VPDN Group configuration does not support this feature.
There are no known workarounds.
We have tested the IOS 12.3(7)XI6, but the router (10000) doesn't send the PADT (auto cleanup). In 7200, it works correctly.
Anyone have has this problem?

I checked it using feature navigator and noticed that cisco 10000 doesn't support ""PPPoE Session Recovery After Reload"" feature.

Is Satellite C650D compatible with an 18.5 inch Widescreen LED Monitor?

Hi.
Can anyone tell me if my laptop reference above in the subject line is compatable with the
Hanns G HL195 18.5 inch Widescreen LED Monitor.
I want to use my laptop in dual role, but not sure if it will work.
If it is compatable how do you connect the monitor up to the laptop.

Generally speaking any external monitor is compatible.
But the question is how do you want to connect the external monitor to the notebook
For example the Satellite C650D-10H supports the External monitor port (RGB port) only.
So you need to use this port in order to connect the external monitor.
It seems that the Hanns G HL195 18.5 inch Widescreen LED Monitor supports the VGA input so you should be able to connect this monitor using common VGA cable.

Satellite C650D - CPU usage is jumping around

I bought a Toshiba Satellite C650D 2 months ago, and I used the Windows 7 that came with it thinking it was all fine and dandy until some days ago, it started getting random lag spikes.
At first it just occured when watching movies (tried 4 different programs, reinstalled all driver, scanned for malware, defragged, you name it) then it started happening outside the movie-viewing aswell. That did it for me, and I installed Windows XP. I've done so 3 times now, clean installs of Windows XP. At first it seemed fine. For some hours, then it started lagging really bad, not like in Windows 7, but CPU usage is jumping around in the boundaries between 1% and 99% randomly, but there is no processes taking it!
It lags whatever I do, just opening notepad can make it jump. I figured it would work with a clean format, but noo, of course the problem reoccured. It could perhaps be drivers, seing as the problems in Windows 7 and XP are somewhat different. I'm at my wits ends here on what to do, anything would be helpful.

Remote Tech using Skype?

I plan on taking a job as a remote tech for a company. In this setup I would be recieving calls back to back to my number for up to 8 hours a day, 5 days a week.
Is this type of setup compatible with a subscription with an online number through Skype? Does the Fair Use Policy cover INBOUND calls (I would be making very few outgoing calls)

Skype is not an internet service provider. You need to have an active internet connection provided by another party to be able to use Skype. Once you have that connection Skype video calls are free from the Skype side. You need to pay your internet service provider for the bandwidth you use though.
