Recovery and Disk Image

For those of you who have spent hours reinstalling the many programs that you have after a crash of you system, I would suggest buying an external drive that has disk imaging software.  Windows 7 comes with this feature. I was fortune enough to have done so and after encountering suspicious activity/possible virus, I loaded the disk image and restored my system with ease.
These programs regularly backup data and disk images based on your scheduling.
I have the Maxtor Onetouch 4 Mini. There are many available and at prices suitable for your needs.

Did you buy your machine second-hand? That's really the only way you would have to purchase OS X 10.8.x from the App Store... but, yes, if you have a USB thumb drive with a bootable installer (such as made with Lion DiskMaker) you can boot from that and reinstall OS X.

  • Anyone know Disk Utility, Ignore Ownership, and disk image DL DVD issues?

I am currently having issues with backup DVD's I burned using Disk Utility. I can put the dual layer DVD's in and the system reads them. When I try to pull a file off the Dual Layer DVD a circle with an X appears notifying me that I cannot copy the files to my desk top.
When I check the DVD's permissions it reads Admin (me) read and write with the ignore ownership checkbox checked...which means I should be able to pull files off the DVD. The only way I can currently get information off the DVD is to duplicate the entire disk to a new folder by selecting the DVD while holding down the Cntrl key and selecting duplicate. I have had other issues with DVD's and disk images in Leopard....including having to eject either through disk utility or by selecting the image with the Cntrl key held down. Finder eject, keyboard eject, and the menu eject selections suddenly report that the disk is in use.
The DVD's were burned by creating a dual layer dvd image through disk utility with the read/write option checked.
After duplicating 2-3 disks, the system itself is unable to mount any more disks from the series of backups. When I look at disk utility it reads that the disk is not mountable. I have to restart my computer so the system can continue to read the backups.
My Itunes disk backups are marked the same way (ignore ownership) with admin read/write privlages....I have no problem pulling files off these disks.
I have tried both logging in as root and booting from an external drive...same problem. Is this some nasty Disk Utility bug? Is anyone else having bizarre permission related issues with Disk Utility and Disk Images.

When you create the image in Disk Utility, did you
    change the 'Partitions' setting?
If you leave it to read 'CD/DVD', it will create a ISO9660/UDF image.
To be able to maintain permission and extended file attributes, you
need to select 'GUID Partition Map'.
I assume you used iTunes to create your music backup?
It seems it creates the correct image type for you.
Before sending this message, I actually created a single layer image,
copied some files to it and gave additional permissions to other users on my system.
Afterwards I copied the files to my Desktop, verifying that the attributes are still intact.
    Best regards
(It took quite a while to burn this 4x DVD-RW Anyways, I hope I could help)

  • Hard Drive and Disk Image not mounting

    Hey everyone,
I'm running a G5 Dual 2Ghz. with OSX 10.5.8 I'm having problems with a back up hard drive. It is an external Western Digital My Book 1.5TB SATA drive. After using it for a few months, it suddenly did not mount anymore.
*1) It also would not appear in Disk Utility.*
    a) Disk Warrior couldn't find the drive (I think because it's formatted with FAT32)
*2) I then took the drive out of the enclosure and put it in the spare bay in the G5.*
    a) It didn't mount
    b) It did show up in Disk Utility
    c) In Disk Utility it wouldn't give me the option to Repair Disk Permissions or Repair Disk
    d) In Disk Utility is says under Partition Scheme: Unformatted
    e) In Disk Utility I don't have the option to mount/eject only gives me the "info" option
    f) Tech Tool did find the drive and it passed all tests
    g) Disk Warrior still did not find the drive
    h) TestDisk finds the drive, but does not find any partitions
*3) I then created a disk image of the drive in Disk Utility onto an external hard drive. The image comes back at 320GB, which seems to be about right I think.*
    a) The disk image would not mount with Disk Image Mounter. It would say there is an Unrecognized File System
    b) In Disk Utility - I don't have the option to Repair Disk Permissions
    c) In Disk Utility - When trying to Repair Disk - I get the error: Repairing Disk failed with error Unrecognized FileSystem
    d) In Disk Utility - If I click Open - The Log file says:
    +Attach Image+
    Initializing...
    Verifying...
    Finishing...
    +Image of "disk0.dmg" attached successfully+
    +Mount of "disk0.dmg" succeeded+
-But it is no where to be found
    e) Disk Warrior can not find the Disk Image
    f) I took the new external drive with the Disk Image to 3 other mac computers but the image would not mount
*4. Other things I've tried when opening the Disk Image for the new external drive.*
    a) in Terminal - hdiutil attach -nomount "volumes/untitled/disk0.dmg"
    b) in Terminal - sudo hdiutil attach -nomount "volumes/untitled/disk0.dmg"
    c) Deleting files System/Library/Extensions.kextcache
    System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kernalcaches
    ALL UNSUCCESSFUL
I'm running very low on ideas. I know I could just erase the drive and reformat it, but the files on it are very important and must be recovered.
Any help or suggestions would be very helpful. I will not have time until after the weekend to try more things. Thanks in advance if you do not hear back from me until after this weekend.

Yes, it will. But if DU says the disk is unformatted then it is also not accessible. If you have files you don't wish to lose then you will need to try recovery software:
    Basics of File Recovery
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • Disk Utility Crashing and Disk Images Not Opening Properly?

    Hi,
I got a new G-Tech 500GB external drive that I've got into three partitions. All of them have Tiger on them but the main one I'm using is giving me problems. I have Stuffit Expander 11 on here and when I try to open a disk image it looks like it's opening but doesn't. Also I try and open Disk Utility and it crashes on me. I did a repair disk permissions a few hours ago after restarting up again and it seemed to be fine but now the problem is back.
The other problem I have on and off is that out of the three partitions I'm supposed to put them in the trash before shutting down and sometimes the two not in use won't go in the trash.
Any ideas? The two other partitions I have right now I'm using for recovery stuff from my internal drive.
    S.

Its the improper unmount of the firewire drive which is the problem. Try to reset all.
    1. Shut-down your Mac, and unplug the power cord
    2. Turn the power off on your external FireWire devices
    3. Unplug the FireWire devices from the Mac
    4. Wait for 5 min.
    5. Plug the power cord to your Mac only
    6. Restart the Mac while holding the Option-Apple-O-F, and keep holding until you get the ">" prompt, then release the keys
    7. At the ">" prompt type:
reset-nvram and hit the Return key
set-defaults and hit the Return key
reset-all and hit the Return key
the last command will restart your mac
    8. Shut down your Mac
    9. Connect all your FireWire devices to the Mac and turn them on
    10. Restart your Mac.
All your FireWire devices should reapear, if not repeat the procedure
How to avoid the issue :
The only really proven way to avoid burning up a FireWire port is to connect all devices and to turn them on PRIOR turning on the Mac. Likely, one must unplug them and turn them off AFTER the Mac has been turned off. If you need to connect another device, then you're on for a shutdown of your machine...
It's a tad annoying but it guarantees that the FW ports won't be damaged.
Be careful when using self powered devices such as webcams, iPods, hard drives or hubs, as they can destroy the port pretty easily. Another thing is to avoid daisy-chaining hard drives.
When the FW port doesn't respond anymore :
In this case, peripherals won't be mounted upon plugging, and won't be displayed in Apple's System Profiler. The self powered devices will still be fed by the port, but won't respond either.
It happens that the PHY just hangs after a surge or a random problem. Once hung, the port will not respond any longer, it is possible to reset the component by going through the following steps :
1° boot the mac in Open Firmware by holding [ Apple key - Option - O - F ] after the startup chime.
2° you'll get to a command prompt. the keyboard mapping will be QWERTY, so pay attention when you type the following :
RESET-NVRAM (enter)
RESET-ALL (enter)
3° Now the mac should restart itself and the port should function properly again.
If it still doesn't work, then it means that the PHY is damaged.

  • Yosemite showing old icons for Hard Disks and Disk images

    Hey all,
I'm running OS X Yosemite, all fully up to date, based on an upgrade install from Mavericks. Everything's basically fine, with the exception that any sort of disk icon (Internal, USB, Disk Images etc) all still use the old Mavericks style icons.
Not a major issue but kind of irritating me at the minute, I could go through and manually change them but I still get the old ones appear when a new disk connects.
This behaviour is exclusive to my user account as when I set up a second user to investigate all icons were the new 'flat' style.
Has anyone come across this, and if so did you find a resolution?

Mine look the same.  Were they suppose to change?

  • Incorrect disk and disk image icons

I'm running 10.7.4 on an early 2011 MBP with 8 GB RAM. Disk images, CDs, etc appear on the desktop with the generic hard drive icon.  My understanding is that this can be corrected by rebuilding launch services.  Upon rebuilding launch services, using Onyx, the icons are correct.  But the next day, they are incorrect again.  Is there any way to resolve this permanently?  Incorrect images can be temporarily corrected by selecting the item and opening the get info box.  This will show the correct icon and upon closing the get info box, the correct icon will appear.  But again, I'm looking for a more permanent fix.  Thanks to anyone that can help.

I have been reporting this problem to Apple since Lion was introduced. The last thing they wanted me to try was to remove DropBox. It seemed to make a difference, but it didn't elimnate the problem. I've since updated to the latest DropBox beta release.

  • Backup disk and Disk Images not mounting

*Intial Disk Utility problem:* Recently my trusty 6 year old PowerBook G4 died from hard-drive failure, with most of my data backed up on external drives. Before migrating data over to my new iMac, I performed "First Aid" in "Disk Utility" on the external backup drive. One of the drives (500GB iomega drive) that backed up my PowerBook and my PC had 5 partitions (4 were FAT32, and 1 was NTFS), somehow got erased in Disk Utility. Even though I was just verifying one of the partitions the whole drive was cleared and renamed: disk2s4 (28kb) and disk2s10 (372.5GB). This didn't take much time, so I knew all the data hadn't been cleared, and checked the Security Options for Erase, and its set to "Don't Erase Data."
*Disk Warrior attempt:* At this point, having a sorta wrecked backup drive that still apparently had data, I bought Disk Warrior and gave that a try. It read the drive the first time, but couldn't recover any of the directory information. Hoping to not overwrite anything, at that point, I didn't proceed with the "rebuild" option. Now when I try Disk Warrior, it just says:
Directory Cannot be rebuilt due to disk hardware failure (-50,447)
    - This disk appears to be a MacOS standard sik
    - This disk does not appear on the desktop
    - This disk is 372.49 GB in size
    - Disk ID: disk2s10
    - File system: HFS (standard) +even though most of the drives had been fat32+
Now Disk Warrior doesn't even give the option to scan the drive.
*Disk Imaging attempt:* Disk Warrior is claiming a hardware problem (which isn't really the case), so I tried making a disk image in Disk Utility of both disk2s10 and disk2s4. I tried opening disk2s10.dmg in Finder and in Disk Utility, and get the message: "No mountable file systems." In the past when confronted with unmountable disk images, I've used VLC media player. So, I pull up VLC read disk2s10.dmg and music starts playing!!! At first I freak out, then I realize that its the first song listed in my iTunes library -- the data is there, can be retrieved, but I'm not sure how to get it!
*Next attempts:* the only other thing I can think of is to try daemon tools or something on my PC, or bring the drives into the the school IT guys.
Please let me know what you think would work that I haven't already tried. Though I have redundancy in the backups, I haven't been able to recover some data for my PhD thesis due in a month, and therefore haven't given up on reviving this disk yet.

I've downloaded the DataRescue and FileSalvage trials, and am currently scanning with DataRescue which will take another few hours. Thanks for those recommendations, its so useful to have a trial scan before buying.
*General Question:* I noticed through these various attempts that reformatting extra drives in the current version of Disk Utility has become a little more dangerous than before. For example, I was reformatting a spare disk from FAT32 to HFS+ and the drive became unmountable. This never happened to me in earlier versions of OSX, and now it seems to happen every time, and partly why my partitions got all screwy. Any thoughts?

  • Slave drive, CDs, USB drives, Disk Images and FW drives fail to mount

Hi. I have two Maxtor internal hard drives (6Y160P0 and 6Y120P0), the second of which (6Y120P0) all of a sudden will not mount on the desktop. When I reboot my Mac, I get two identical error windows that state, “The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer”, with options to initialize, ignore, or eject. (There are no other drives of any type connected to the computer).
Within Disk Utility (when run from the primary hard drive), the slave drive shows up, but its icon is dimmed. Clicking the “Mount” button does nothing. Disk First Aid does not allow one to “Repair Permissions” nor “Repair Disk”, presumably since it won’t mount (eg, these options are dimmed). One odd aspect about Disk Utility is that the master and slave drive are listed as “disk0s10” and “disk1s10”, respectively, rather than the way they usually show up with the names I’ve given them. Yet on the desktop the working master drive shows up with its given name.
When I run Disk Itility from a CD, both internal drives look fine, accept repairs, and the drives are listed by their proper names.
As another interesting clue, all of the Disk Images (stored on the working master internal hard drive) that I have attempted to mount fail to open as well. When I doubleclick them, I get an error that reads, “The following disk images failed to mount: Reason: No mountable file systems”.
Two different USB keychains fail to mount; my FW drive fails to mount.
I’ve run Applejack Auto Restart without any difficulty several times.
Apple's Hardware check CD says all is AOK.
I’ve rebuilt this problematic disk (and the master) several times with Disk Warrior 3.03 and all is supposedly AOK.
SmartReporter says both disks are fine.
TechTool Pro 4.1.2 has run the following checks on the problem disk and these are AOK: Disk Controller, SMART, Read/Write.
All of this makes me wonder if the issue is with my system software, rather than the slave disk??? Interestingly, CDs refuse to mount as well when I've booted from the primary hard drive (but I don't think it is the CD drive itself since I can boot from the CD drive). This, coupled with the fact that disk images won't mount, makes me now think it is an OS issue rather than hardware.
Any suggestions about what I can do to salvage and fix this problem would be greatly appreciated!
    G4/867MHz running OS 10.4.8

If anyone else is having this problem, check out the totally awesome post by GNJ to my similar query on the MacFixIt forums:

His suggestion to run the 10.4.8 combined PPC update worked like a charm and solved the problem perfectly!
PS If you are having the same issue, there is the problem that one can't use a USB/FW drive to get the combo updater onto the problematic hard drive, and even if you can, the faulty software won't allow one to mount a .dmg image. This can be solved by using "Target" mode, eg connect the problematic CPU to a working CPU (in this case, my PowerBook) via a FW cable, then boot up the problem CPU while holding down the letter "t". One can then drag the combined updater unstuffed file (eg, not the .dmg) directly to the problematic disk from the working CPU. Then, when I booted in the problematic disk/CPU, all it took was a doubleclick on the unstuffed updater and all was fine.

  • Is there any disk imaging s/ware for iMac? Im a PC user at moment.

Ok Im a current PC user, neer usid iMac but prob buy in the next few days.
I use Acronsis True Image at the moment toback up and disk image my PC so I can have a fast recovery, I like to add all my software, windows update and then do a disk image every few months for an easy recovery.
Is this possible on Apple iMac? what s/ware is available for disk imaging and reovery as per Norton Ghost or True Image, Ive looked on the Apple website but cant find any
    cheers
    Andy

I was wanting a NAS to be used for over my ethernet network though, ie the NAS HDD will be up in my loft out of the way, whereas I have cables running up there to it - this is ok isnt it?
Never done this. But I do not see any problems with what you plan to do.
How is the restore disk made?
When you make a back up, SK creates a mirror of the drive you have backed up. A perfect mirror. You can boot from it, and everything looks exactly the same, except you have booted from the equivalent of the f drive. You can then, if you wish, erase/reformat the c drive and ask SK to restore. This simply reverses the process, and the f drive is mirrored to the now empty c drive.
I do not know if SK will make a bootable CD - have never tried it. Probably not, because even the minimum size bootable OS X is about 1.1 gB.
also where can it be backed upto? HDD, external HDD? NAS device (over ethernet), CD, or DVD?
I do not know about a CD or DVD. The others, yes. If your Mac can see the target drive, SK can back up to it.
Please be aware however that certain external enclosures, simply cannot be used for booting a Mac. USB is notoriously problematic, and even certain fw enclosures can be a problem.

  • CDs, DVDs, disk images won't appear in Sidebar or on Desktop

    Hello,
Brand new iMac 2.16, right out of the box.
CDs, DVDs, and Disk Images won't appear on the desktop or in the Sidebar. Nothing is shown over the horizontal gray line at the top of the sidebar, no Macintosh HD, Servers, etc. Disk Images are fully functional, ie Disk Utility recognizes and mounts them just fine.
I checked Mac Help and followed its instructions:
    (1) In Finder preferences:Pane:General, all 'Show These Items on the Desktop' boxes are checked.
    (2) In Finder preferences:Pane:Sidebar, I checked all boxes under "Show These Items in the Sidebar. BUT these changes are NOT retained. After I close the Preferences, the Sidebar does not change. If I re-open the Sidebar preferences, the relevant boxes are now unchecked, as if I'd never done a thing.
Restarting was the only way to fix the problem. Thereafter, the upper items in the Sidebar (Macintosh HD, external drives, iPod, CDs) sometimes SPONTANEOUSLY disappear. They still show up on the desktop, but tweaking the Sidebar preferences is again ineffective. Restarting is the only solution.
    Thank you for your help,
    Andy

  • Cannot remove Disk Icons from Disk Images or External Drives from Desktop

After years with PPCs, I just upgraded to an Intel Mac. I am now running into a funny problem. The majority of the time (although occasionally it works as it should), I am unable to eject disks. These include disk images from my internal hard drive, external hard drives, and disk images from external hard drives.
I do not get the “Cannot eject this disk because it is in use” error that happens when something is trying to access a file on the disk; instead, nothing happens. I’ve tried ejecting by dragging the icon to the dock, hitting the eject icon in finder, right-clicking and ejecting from there, and even using a terminal-based script that I found on the WEB. None of these do anything- no errors, but the icon hangs about as if nothing happened.
Occasionally I cannot log off at all (I just get the SBBOD); here I have to do a hard reboot. Sometimes I can log off properly. Either way, all seems to be fine when I log back in.
    I’ve run Applejack multiple times.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated! Thank you.

  • Disk images suddenly will not unmount.

One of several intermittent troubles I am having on my new 24" iMac with Leopard:
suddenly when using disk images none will unmount. Only launching Disk Utility and unmounting them there works. Or logging out of my account. The eject symbol next to the disk image's name doesn't work. Dragging the disk image to the trash doesn't work either. If I have a disk image open and click eject it's Finder window closes, but he disk image remains mounted.
Three wipes of the HD and reinstalls of Leopard have failed to fix this issue.

I've got this one too. It also happens with external drives and not just disk images.
I made a little apple script which ejects disks and disks images.
    on open some_items
    repeat with this_item in some_items
    try
do shell script "hdiutil detach " & quoted form of POSIX path of this_item
    end try
    end repeat
    end open
open the above in Script editor and save it as an application. Put this application (or an alias to it) on the desktop. To unmount one or more disks drop them onto this application (you can do it with several disks at once). I find that this works a bit faster than launching disk utility and ejecting the drives manually. Still, it would be preferable if they just fixed it.

  • Disable disk image mounting + more

    Hey all,
I asked these questions over in the main leopard forum but they thought the Unixheads might have a bit more information on what I am looking for in this regards.
Basically I am running ~40 users on Leopard via LDAP with NFS mounted home directories. Ideally I would like any user outside of the local admin group to be unable to mount disk images and have any USB hotplug device mounted read only.
Thus far I have gone about unloading diskarbitrationd, which makes using any mountable device useless (DVD/CD, USB, DMG) for any user, as well as modifying ACL's to 774 on /System/Library/CoreServices/diskimagemounter.app and /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app. This has resulted in crashing on trying to use the eject button in Finder or the Keyboard and the OS throwing various errors in regards to not finding child processes or background processes.
Moreover none of the above solutions is anywhere near ideal.
Somewhere OSX gets permissions and mount options for both USB drives, Disk Images and CD/DVD's. These options as shown by 'mount' are
    local, nodev, nosuid, noowners
CD's and Disk Images are also mounted with the read-only flag.
I realize much of the backend has changed in the Transition from Tiger/Leopard in this regard, much akin to the way udev has changed over the last few iterations of the linux kernel. However there should be some way to modify the base permissions and mount options for these sets of volumes.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers!

I haven't tried this, but setting the kernel security level to 2 may be the closest thing to what you want:
    <pre>sysctl -w kern.securelevel=2</pre>
You could run this command (as root, of course) in a launchd item at startup. Test thoroughly before deploying. You can find documentation about securelevels on FreeBSD pages, but I don't know whether they work the same way in Darwin. Once the securelevel has been raised, you can't lower it without rebooting.
You do realize, however, that this precaution, by itself, won't stop anyone with physical access from stealing data.

However, I still have the problem that it will only eject 1 of 2 or 2 of 3 or 3 of 4 etc. I always have to run the script again to eject the remaining disk or image.
It says: Applescript error Finder got an error. Can't get disk 3 (or whatever is remaining.)
I really appreciate your help btw.
this of course makes sense because once a disk is ejected it's not counted among the remaining disks. we should start ejecting from the last disk (see the script below). Also, as i found out, Finder's eject command in apple script doesn't unmount internal drives. At least it didn't for me. I' not sure what the story here is.
One can circumvent this by calling a shell script command.
    Something along the following lines.
    tell application "Finder"
set nmd to number of disks
--this ejects externals and disk images
    if nmd > 1 then
repeat with i from 2 to nmd
    eject disk (nmd - i + 2)
    end repeat
    end if
--this ejects internals except for the start up
set nmd to number of disks
    if nmd > 1 then
repeat with i from 2 to nmd
    do shell script "diskutil unmount /Volumes/\"" & (name of disk (nmd - i + 2)) & "\"> /dev/null &"
    end repeat
    end if
    end tell
I tested it on my computer and it ejects 10 disks and disk images well so I think it should work ok most of the times but there are probably situations when it will fail. I'm not sufficiently motivated to refine it.
