Recovery and USB HDD Question

I have a USB HDD for my laptop (About 1TB). If worse comes to worse, is it possible to restore from System Image that I create on that USB HDD, or does it have to be a USB flash drive?

Depends on what image you created.
Best to back up a current image periodically to that external drive this way. I'll assume you've upgraded to Windows 8.1.
   Use System Image Backup
The image that enables you to restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents needs to be on DVDs or a flash drive. See p. 54 of the User's Guide.

  • Lenovo C255 - USB Drive and USB HDD is not recognized

    Hi
I am trying to attach SSD (Kingston SSDnow 300 -  60gb) drive to PC via bridge SATA-USB to USB 3 port, so i have "USB to ATA/ATAPI Bridge" stuff at installed devices and no HDD disks appeared at MyComputer . Still i have 2 disks at Device manager - my native HDD and this USB Drive.
The problem is that BIOS doesn't see any USB HDD. Excluded from the bootable device : USB HDD USB CDROM.
So how i can solve this issue ?

    Hi
I will try to help you buddy.
    > When it is started is says "Insert system disk in drive. Press any key when ready
This message appeared on my notebook after the HDD has died.
I had to replace the HDD and to install the OS again.
I assume its the same problem with your notebook. The HDD is not present or not recognized and you have to install a compatible HDD to get the OS running.
I have googled a little bit and found out that this notebook was delivered with the 10GB Toshiba MK1016GAP HDD. It supports the ATA-2/ATA-3/ATA-4/ATA-5 interface.
Please note that many BIOS have an HDD size limitation. This means that not all HDD sizes are supported! I presume a 20GB should be compatible but this is only my own opinion
    > How can I change my BIOS so that the HDD is recognized?
The BIOS cannot be changed apart from the update (check Toshiba driver page -> Archive -> Satellite Archive).
But vary important is that you will use a compatible HDD.
    > Can anybody help me with the recovery CD?
Dont know if you will be able to order this CD from the authorized service provider in your country because the notebook is really an oldie. But you should ask the guys.
What you could is to install the OS from the Microsoft CD and then could install some necessary drivers.

  • "rescue and recovery" and "swshare" log question

I am currently analzying logs from "rescue and recovery" and "swshare" program and notice SMA.log and capture.sma in particular. I want to verifiy what do each of those 2 logs mean. does one mean the data that was successfully backed up and the other one means what was restored to the machine? the restore.log contains a specific date, was that the date the data was restored to the machine?
    Thanks in advance!!!

The logs gets created automatically and have the information of the particular task which is completed or processed.

  • K8 Neo 2 and USB HDD

    K8 Neo2 (7025), Bios 1.B
On reboot, external USB HDD(2.5''; powered from USB bus) is not detected. Only re-plugging will help.
At the same time, flash drives are reconnected properly.
Should not be a power problem, as drive is powered from 2 USB ports, and works perfectly with laptop.
Is there anythig that can be done to correct this?
    Thanks.

Perhaps the selfpowered usb ports on nvidia boards just doesn't give enough amp to
    your HD .
Never tried a USB powered device on the board myself , so it's hard to say .
You could try with a usb hub that is self powered if you have/can borrow one .

  • OSX NAS with MacMini and USB HDD's

I have been trying to figure out what would be the best solution for a making a few TB's of storage available to all users in my home network.
I tried AEBS, but the performance is just way too slow. If I were to setup a macMini with attached FW and USB drives, how would I make those drives available to my users on my home network?
Also, do I need to leave the system logged in as a user or can I just share out drives and partitions and leave them?
    I'm new to OSX networking.
    Thanks

any clients connecting via wifi will experience slower file access. Make sure the wireless clients are using 802.11n then you can achieve acceptable speeds.

Set Up File Sharing With Other Mac Users on Your Local Network

When using a computer as a server it needs to on 24/7. It is best to have a user logged in even if no one uses that mac as a deskop as it make it easier to remotely administrate it over vnc for example

  • Aperture - library management and external HDD question

    Hi all.
I have just graduated from a point and shoot to a Panasonic GH2 (love it), and have now begun using Aperture 3 rather than iPhoto on my early 2008 MB Pro to manage my photos going forwards.  Of course, I’ve now discovered that Aperture is quite the resource hog and so it’s upgrade time (darn, “have” to buy a new ‘puter!).  I have a 2011 MB Pro (2.3Ghz i7 with 512GB SSD) on order and 8GB of DDR 3 arriving from Crucial.  Since I have this brand-new-computer opportunity I want to make sure I’m organising things properly before I start transferring things across, and so have a few Aperture-related questions.  (In case it’s relevant, I’m shooting in RAW+JPEG.  So far I’ve been using RAW as master, but have since learnt it might be a good idea to import JPG as master and switch to RAW only when I need to make corrections, so I’ll probably do that going forwards.)
I understand that moving to referenced masters on an external drive might be a good idea and save me precious SSD-space.  To that end, questions are:
    1. Can anyone recommend a companion external HDD for Aperture and the 2011 MBPro?  I guess either FW800 or Thunderbolt are the way to go.  The Lacie Little Big Disk Thunderbolt might be an option but is this overkill for Aperture masters or would FW800 be sufficient.  I’ve also seen the G-Tech G-RAID mini, Lacie Rugged – thoughts welcome.
Key requirements are a) as compact as possible, and b) bus powered.
    2. What kind of performance can I expect if I go down this route?  Is there going to be significant loading/processing delay whenever I switch to a new image?
    3. How will Aperture cope with (eg) syncing photos to iPad / iPhone if the drive containing the masters isn’t connected?  Put another way, are JPG renders saved in the Aperture library (i.e. on my MBP SSD) or with the masters?
Thanks in advance to anyone who responds!

OWC (an excellent vendor) has the Elite Pro Mini hard drive that meets your specs:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/EliteALmini/eSATA_FW800_FW400_USB
Thiunderbolt drives are not mainstream yet but eSATA and FW800 both work well. The multiple connection methods of OWC drives allow very desirable flexibility when purposing/repurposing drives.
Note too that the MBP optical drive can be replaced with up to a 1-TB hard drive DIY or OWC will do it for you. That is what I am doing with my 17" 2011 MBP.
    2. Is there going to be significant loading/processing delay whenever I switch to a new image?
SSD latency is orders of magnitude less than hard drives. Switching to a new image even fast hard drives with fast connectivity add significant latency delay. To avoid that what I do is leave (Referenced) Masters on the SSD until all editing is complete (which may be a few weeks). Only then do I use Aperture to change the Referenced Masters location from the SSD to a large external drive.
What kind of performance can I expect if I go down this route?
With Masters on the SSD and 8 GB RAM imports/exports are very fast and all Aperture editing is essentially instant. You will be pleased!
Suggested workflow steps for Referenced Masters:
    • Use a FW card reader or MBP slot to copy to a file folder on the SSD (never directly into Aperture or any other images management app). With fast camera cards copy times are quick, but cheap slow cards can slow this step down a lot.
    • Eject and physically disconnect the card reader.
    • Back up that file folder on external drive(s).
    • Only after backup is complete, reformat the camera card in-camera.
    • Import images into Aperture from the file folder on the SSD.

  • Time capsule as a shared media drive and USB backup question

I sincerely apologise if this has been answered in a different form elsewhere but I am struggling to get the exact answer I need.
I am planning to use my Time Capsule 1TB as a shared media drive at home. I have a G5 running Leopard and an MBP running the same. I want to be able to have a shared iTunes and iPhoto library and, from what I understand, this is a reasonable way to do it.
My question relates to the back up of the Time Capsule. I have ordered a 1TB LaCie USB drive which I am planning to have permanently connected to the TC for backup purposes. Can I set-up the TC to use Time Machine to "mirror" itself to the USB drive? Is this something that either the MBP or the G5 will have to be set-up to do?
Any thoughts would be welcome. Thank you in advance.

No. Time Machine cannot back-up any network drive, including your Time Capsule's internal HD.
There is an "archive" facility, but it's inconvenient, to say the least. See #Q6 in the Using TIME MACHINE with a TIME CAPSULE *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.

  • RMI recovery and multi-client questions

    Hello,
I'm new to RMI and managed to get a sample HelloWorld-code running. After secceeding two major questions came up.
    1) If the RMI server is running and the registry server crashes and is restarted, then the new instance of the registry server does know anything about the still running RMI server. What do you need to to that the RMI server rebinds. My idea is that the RMI server must be multithreaded, controls in the background the registry and automatically rebinds after a crash. Any other easier and even better solutions?
    2) My impression is that there is one instance of the RMI server waiting for incoming requests. What happens, if a request takes a long time and a second request from a second client comes in? How can it be achieved that one RMI server handles many client requests? I know for database connections ther is something like pooling. Do you need to implement a similar technique for RMI.
    3) Would the implementation of a web service avoid the problems mentioned above?
Thanks for any suggestions or hints to related topics.
    Regards, Rainer

    Hi carr_onstott ,
thanks for clarification and the suggestion to start the name service withing the own application. need to discuss this approach with the customer, normally there is one and only one name service on a server using the default port. With your suggestion I need to reserve a second portnumber and moreover standard tools providing a list of registered RMI servers will not detect my RMI server.
The problem I see with web services is that we plan to exchange huge binary data byte[] and this is not really what web services are made for. There are sultions to use multibodypart to transfer the XML web service request/response, but the amount of data increases dramatically.

  • Airport extreme and USB HDD

Running AEBS just fine with two PC's, a MacBook Pro, two iPhones, and an iPad. Attempted to connect a USB drive to AEBS. Does not show on any device connected to network. Tried three different drives. Any suggestions?

Iunieri, That did it, thanks! Seems like most of the information I found earlier said it would work with the FAT formatting. I reformatted the drive to OSX Extened (journaled) and I can now access it when connected to the AEBS.

  • Airport Express and an External USB HDD

    Hello All,
If you can help that would be brilliant. I have just been given an Airport Express as a present. Not sure why. I am wondering if there is a way to allow the software / hardware to pick up a USB HDD instead of a USB Printer. I noticed that the Airport software does show you a disk option in settings but it greyed out so you can not select it. I have got the Airtunes working and that is brilliant!!! I just dont want to have to return it if I can get the USB HDD to work with it.
    I hope you can help.
    Terry

Are there any other pieces of hardware from Apple that do Airtunes and USB HDD that are available?
No. The only device compatible with Airtunes is the AX.

  • TC hibernates and wakes hdd's over and over again?

Anyone else has experienced same problem after latest TC update that causes TC hdd and usb hdd attached to TC sleep and wake continuously? It happens about once a day and only TC boot helps. TC puts hdd's to sleep and then wakes them up over and over...
Without a reset/boot it continues to do so as long as my nervous can last... Before latest firmware this never happened. Is there anything to be done to fix it? I have turned all other devices of so they dont check TC hdd's but it did not help.

Hello, i'm french and i have the same problem of you!
    Since 7.6 firmware...
Is it possible to back on last firmare?
    May be with hard reset...?
Please we need help before hdd crash!

  • Question on Time Capsule and external USB HDD

    Hello everyone,
I have a 500GB Time Capsule that is working wonderfully. I recently have been downloading a number of large .iso image files that are taking up a lot of space on my internal drive on my Macbook Pro. I do not back these files up on the Time Capsule as it is getting full and i want it to backup other more important things.
I do however wish to backup these files. My current desk is rather full and really will not allow me to purchase a large 3.5" HDD and plug it in USB.
Is it possible to plug an external drive into the back of the Time Capsule and have it be used as a wireless disk as well?
I would prefer to have that drive not be part of the Time Capsule disks, i just want to be able to access it wireless over my network.
I would be grateful if anyone can help me out. If this solution will not work, is there some sort of NAS disk solution i can get to work with my TC?
    Thanks

All you need is an external USB HDD. It needs to be formatted HFS+ (Mac OS Extended - Journaled), if you plan on a future Time Machine Disk on this drive, or FAT/FAT32. You could get a NAS, but you don't need to if you already have TC. Can I assume the USB port is free or do you have a USB printer hooked up to it?
