Recovery CD - clean install and new partitions or install over old OS?

I have a T400s running Windows 7. While using the factory recovery tool, the restore was interrupted. The OS wouldn't boot and the F11 function was disabled.
I ordered the recovery CDs, which will arive today. Now, there are 3 partitions on my ThinkPad: a boot partition, the OS partition, and the recovery CD partition. My question is this. Will the Recovery CD do a clean install ... wiping all 3 partitions and reinstalling the entire OS and recovery partitions to the factory state? Or will it simply reinstall the OS in the OS partition, leaving everything else alone? Thanks.
P

Since you'll have the Recovery Media, you could elect to simply remove the recovery partition.  This can be done through Disk Management (right-click Computer in Start Menu and choose Manage).  The drive should be set up with the Service Partition, the C: partition, and then the Q: partition.  If you delete the Q: partition you can then extend the C: partition.

  • Rescue And Recovery On Clean Install Of Windows XP Service Pack 2

    Hey,
I have recently purchased a refurbised IBM ThinkPad T40 2373-82M laptop computer. When I received the computer it did not have any recovery partition or recovery CD's that came with it. I then installed my own personal copy of Windows XP Service Pack 2 on the machine and installed drivers and applications individually by downloading them off the Lenovo support website. However, I have attempted to install the latest version of the ThinkVantage Rescue And Recovery Program (Version 4.20) on my computer but I end up with the following error: 'There is not enough free space on the computer to install or upgrade the Rescue and Recovery environment'. When I did a full clean install on the system I deleted all partitions that were on the computer at the time during the Windows XP installation and made a single NTFS partition. There were two 20GB partitions on the hard drive when I bought it, but neither of them were the IBM Rescue and Recovery partition. Could it be possible for me to install this software on my laptop, and make a Rescue and Recovery partition, now and make it the same way it would of been when it left the IBM factory?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers
    Ash.

  • DFU and recovery mode, clean install ios 8 ?

Whats the difference between DFU mode and recovery mode ?
I want to do a clean install of the new ios 8.1.3 which the mode is the best ? I want to make it as a new one (someone else used it before)

If you already have 8.1.3 on your device, there is no way (and no need) to reinstall it. However, if you want the device cleared of all former user's info, then go to Settings>General>Reset>Erase all Content and Settings. Then you can set your device up as new.
If you are having issues with the previous owner's iCloud account still being signed on and asking for a password, there is no way around that save having the previous owner remove the Activation Lock.

  • Performed tiger clean install on old pbg4 and no ilife

Hi all. I just performed a clean install on my old pb g4 (titanium) and now have no iphoto, imovie, etc. apps. I don't have a copy of the ilife disc as I've always just received my computers with the apps on them. How do I get these apps without having to buy new ilife 06? I don't have original discs that came with computer as I got it used.
Can I use target disc mode to move apps from my new macbook c2d to old pbg4? Both are running 10.4.8.
    Thanks...:)
macbook c2d g4 ibook, graphite ibook, ipod   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

The Tiger retail install package does not include iLife which is sold separately or included with the Tiger install package that ships with a new Mac.
The apps included with the Tiger retail install package are listed here.
    http://www.apple.com/macosx/techspecs/
Was an iLife version included with the install package that shipped with this Mac when new and if so, which version? If yes, you no longer have the install package for this Mac?
Or did you purchase iLife 05 or 06 separately and no longer have this install disc?
Either way, you are in trouble.
Doubtful the iLife applications on your new MacBook are Universal which is required to run the applications on a PPC Mac. More than likely they are Intel binaries only so will not work on a PPC Mac and regardless, doubtful just moving the applications over this way will work.

  • Data recovery after 'clean install'

    Hello,
My daughter's Macbook Air suffered the 'hinge' problem, and was returned to Apple for service. Some idiot at the Apple Depot did a clean install of OS X for absolutely NO reason.
I'm looking for the best way to access the hard drive externally (via USB only) so I can run Data Rescue and attempt to rescue her files.
Obviously I'd use Firewire target disk mode if the Airbook has Firewire port.
    Any ideas?
    thanks much

There is no way to directly access the hard drive via USB like Target Disk Mode. If you have Data Rescue on a bootable DVD, then you can attempt to boot the computer from an optical drive just as you would to install OS X. Alternatively, if you have an 8 or 16 GB flash drive you can install OS X on it then copy Data Rescue to it. Then boot the computer from the USB flash drive. If Data Rescue is on a bootable DVD you can clone the DVD to a flash drive.
Note that having installed OS X on the erased drive as well as having used the drive compromises the ability to rescue files. Once files are overwritten they cannot be recovered.

  • After a clean install, what old files to put back in?

Was having nothing but trouble after upgrading from Tiger to Leopard on my G5 tower. Biggest problem was Safari taking 3 minutes or so to boot up—did all the suggested cleaning of prefs, etc., but nothing worked. Also Elements would pop up once on the dock then quit, as would Ready!Set!Go, and a new FruitMenu from Insanity didn’t load properly.
So went ahead and got out an old hard drive, hooked it up, and put a clean install Leopard on it. Booted from it, and guess what-- Safari comes right up, Elements installed and works as it should, and everything is looking good. Did a 10.5.7 upgrade, put in the Safari software update, and it’s booting right away also.
This is great, so now I’ll do a clean install on my original drive, and then pull the pics, music, etc. from my Time Machine back up disk to it. Here is what I need advice on:
Which files do I pull over from my old user account and System Library to get the prefs, mail, etc. that I was using before, and more importantly, which files DON’T I want to pull over and perhaps screw up the new user account and system.
    Thanks ……….

  • Installing over old version

I will be installing CS4 Design Premium over Photoshop CS3; Dreamweaver 8 and Flash Professional 8. Will the settings and preferences (and in the case of Photoshop, plug-ins and actions) of these existing applications be transferred to the new installation?

You're not installing OVER anything. The upgrades install exactly the
same way as the full retail versions. The older versions, with the
exception of Acrobat, which you'll be prompted to uninstall, are left
    untouched.
Nothing is brought over from the older versions.

  • Recovery HD gone after creating new partition (to install Snow)

    Hey all,
So I needed to reinstall Snow Leopard on my Macbook Pro, so in Disk Utility I shrunk the main partition by about 20gb and then installed Snow Leopard on that partition, so now I can dual-boot Lion and Snow Leopard.
But now the Recovery HD partition is gone. Is this normal and any way to get it back?

Well like I said, I already have file redundancy with my two computers and if the whole thing dies, I'll just do it all over again... I'm not too worried about that. But yeah, probably a good idea to keep a copy of the installer. I did download it overnight but by then my problem was already resolved, haha. *puts it in safe keeping*
I really only cared for Recovery HD for two things: Find my Mac (it's needed to boot into Guest only mode) and to do file system repairs in Disk Utility if necessary.
When I get a bigger capacity hard drive one day, maybe I'll clone the whole setup but for now I really only wanted that partition back for the two things I mentioned above.
But again, I still insist that the method in the link is a much faster way, step 1 being almost unnecessary.
The 10.7.2 update even includes this exact process in the background to replace the old Recovery partition with its newer version.

  • Best Practice Clean Install (Same Old Chestnut for Sure)

OK, I'm sure the answer is somewhere in this forum but each part is so spread out and I'm getting the sequence mixed up on the best way to make the transition to Tiger in consideration of my current setup. So, thanks in advance for being patient and for the help in general!
I have three partitions in my current HD (1Gig PB 15" Ti, max RAM). One has just system and apps, the other two are just files. Due to my lack of foresight, I severely underestimated the need for more room for my apps.
Ideally, I'd like to wipe everything clean and install Tiger fresh, this time with two partitions and lotsa room for my system.
I just purchased a FW drive where I've dumped all my non-system files. Now I wish it were a simple matter of dragging and dropping items from my old Home folder to my new one, although I've saved a LOT of supplementary data for my apps and Lord knows what else. I use Entourage. I MUST get it up and running with all the mail and folders migrated correctly to Tiger. I have a huge number of important documents saved there.
So what's the most efficient, yet most comprehensive route?

I suggest reformatting the FWHD into two partitions, to mimic your proposed setup. Then, use something like Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper!, etc., clone (make a bootable copy) of your current boot volume to one partition, copy the data from the other two to the second partition, boot into the clone, and ensure that it looks and feels exactly like the original. Then, reformat/partition the internal HD, clone the FWHD clone to one partiton and copy the data to the other. Now, boot with the Tiger install disk and upgrade one or the other boot volumes. This leaves you with what you currently have and the new Tiger system. Run Tiger for awhile and if you run into any problems, you can revert backwards. If it looks good, then clone Tiger back to the FWHD.

  • I want to plot a waveform chart where I have a constant slope(defined by me) and new data is plotted over the chart with the defined slope already in the background.

I want my chart to have a constant slope already plotted before it continues to start plotting the real time data.. so that I can compare my new data point to point with the ideal slope that i already have in the background

    Hi,
Thanks for help.. But this would work when i have one array and a constant "slope". What if I want to print 2 arrays of data.. means if there is an array of data instead of constant "slope"...
Since your graph is refreshed every time you go through the loop anyway, just set up the constant/reference array before the loop and feed it into the graph. That way you'll also have a full X-axis (and a Y-axis which at least includes all the reference data) for the graph already set up.

  • Installing new 5.1 Bootcamp over old one?

A cursory search on this didn't turn up any results, or maybe I'm just asking the question wrong...
On a 2012 rMBP, I have Mavericks and Win7 via Bootcamp 5.0 (latest available at the time)
Now that Bootcamp 5.1 is out, is it standard practice to simply install this (from OSX) without fear of hosing Windows 7? The nVidia display drivers that (presumably) came bundled in the initial Bootcamp package are getting a bit stale and I was hoping 5.1 would update that a bit -- though not at the risk of jeopardizing anything on the Win7 side of things.
I'm not familiar with the mechanics of Bootcamp, so not sure if it automatically does some kind of routine repartitioning/formatting.
    TIA

Thank you LT. That helps clarify things.
I wasn't sure if directly updating hardware drivers from the Windows side was permissible or if some sort of permissions/blessing was needed from the OSX side first.
A post I was following in another forum made it seem like there was some dependency between the two OSes:

  • Can´t see Aperture Library in new Keynote and new Pages but yes in old Numbers

I update to Mavericks. Then the same for Aperture, Keynote and Pages. In the iWork programs, when i try to open media i can not see my Aperture Library. But in the old version of Numbers yes, i can see de Aperture Library.
Of course yes, I repared permisions, update previews for photos and also change to other Aperture libraries. But nothing works yet.
Any one whith the same problem?

So basically here's what I did:
Created a new library. Let iphoto name it. (it was named Photo Library).
Openned iWork (I don't care which app...they all do the same **** thing)
Click on Media, and voila. There is my library, with the photos in it.
NOW.....I changed the name of the new library to something else. Open it in iphoto or aperture. I see the photos in the app. When I open it with iWork, now it's empty and says that there is NO media.
I work with multiple libraries, and there are all named according to subject (Work, Family, etc.).
Apple has screwed the pooch with this abysmal version of the software.
If you are happy putting ALL your photos in 1 library, good for you. If not, your screwed.

  • Clean install or migrate for new MBP?

Is it worth the hassle of doing a clean install over using the migration assistant?
I have a lot of programs and stuff that I may not be able to get the dmg files or just installing so many will be a pain.
Does it make that much difference?

It has always been _trouble free_ for me, when purchasing a new mac on first boot-up to tether together and move everything. Your mileage may very. Hope this helps.
