Recovery data on external drive

Didn't really know where to put it.
I most likely deleted an important folder on my external drive a while ago (which was the only copy because I didn't have enough space on other drives, doesn't matter), I don't remember when, because I didn't know I did.
So I'm looking to recover everything that's possible. I already made myself to have no expectations, but maybe it is possible to retrieve the files. The 2TB drive (LaCie d2 Quadra USB 3.0) is only filled up for 750GB approximately and I didn't do much writing ever since I got it.
I'm looking for a folder that contains 100-150GB of data, .DNG raw files and .MP4 movie clips.
So I want a reliable way to see whether there are still files on the drive or not, and hopefully to be able to bring them back 'alive'.
Never done any recovery before so all help is welcome, it's pretty important.
Thanks in advance.

Try Data Rescue. It will show you what files are recoverable, and you can purchase the software if it looks like it will work for you. You'll need to recover the files to a different drive, so make sure either your internal or another external has room for the files you need to recover.

  • Satellite A665 - Create Recovery Data on External Hard Drive

    Hi
I recently purchased my Satellite A665 and I am trying to create my Recovery Data on an external hard drive instead of CD's or DVD's. I am using Recovery Media Creator and it's not recognizing the attached Hard Drive in the USB and keeps asking me to attach the USB Flash memory. Anyone else having this problem or suggestions??
    Bettina

I double clicked on the icon (under Finder/Devices). My choices are: Open, Open Enclosing Folder, Eject Free Agent Go Flex Drive, Get Info, Remove from Sidebar. Do you have any other suggestions?
I also tried double clicking on icon, then going to File. Only choice was "New Smart Folder".

  • Problem creating Mtn Lion Recovery partition on external drive.

USB external.  Newly erased, three partitions: one 2GB for Recovery HD, other two backups of my old SL machine and new ML machine (Mini). Those work and their respective machines fine.  Drive seems OK.
Used Recovery Disk Asst v. 1.0 to create Recovery HD on the small partition while booted into 10.8.2 (the brand new Mini).  Factory installed Mtn Lion Recovery HD exists on internal drive and it works— when starting with command-R or command-shift-R, not with Option key.     Install of Recovery HD to external seemed to go fine and doing a "diskutil list" in Terminal showed both the internal and external Recovery HD's, properly named as such.   However, when restarted with Option down the recovery partition showed up named the same as my internal— at that point "Macintosh HD" but later when I changed the internal's name, reinstalled the Recovery HD, and restarted with Option key the recovery partition now was named the same as new internal drive name.   Both times choosing the recovery partition resulted in booting into internal drive.
Was wondering if anyone had a similar problem— and found solution/reason.   Apple Tech Support particularly not helpful/knowledgeable on this subject.

    Hi Baltwo
Really appreciate the help.   Many thanks.     Finally seems to be working.     Not sure exactly what worked but in case you're interested I'll give you a, hopefully, short summary:
Using DU (after copy/paste of the command you wrote above into Terminal) I cloned the working internal drives RDH to the partition for it on the ext.   Failed— still seemed to work as almost an alias pointing at the boot volume on the internal.
So, erased the external again; didn't partition, did a reinstall of ML from DU while booted into RDH of internal.  Then started from that new ML partition on external and let Setup Asst migrate everything over from the internal to keep Users/Permissions from being a problem.
When that finished I tried to restart w option key.   Got a recovery HD that was called exactly that but, again, booted into internal boot drive.   Booted into internals RHD just to make sure it was OK and it was.
For whatever reason again restarted w option key.   This time I got four choices:  the boot volume of internal and external, an ext volume called Recovery HD (the trickster), and another volume called Recovery 10.8.3.   Something new— and, as Bill Murray said in Ground Hog Day, "anything new is good."   So I tried booting into that new RHD 10.8.3.  (Note, I'm still running 10.8.2 on boot volumes.)
And that worked— booted into Recovery HD but no way that I could figure to see for sure that it was the Recovery HD on ext vs. on internal.   I think I need to activate the Debug menu on the RHD DU so I can choose the 10.8.3 recovery and see if I have the option of Repairing the disk or it's greyed out.  If greyed, then proves I'm booted into it.   Might be a more elegant way to see that but it's the one I know.    Still, I assume I was in the RHD on the external.
Then made a second partition for the old mac's backup and that initially resulted in the boot volume of the internal backup not be mountable but after a restart or two testing the two RHD's, the mini decided to see all the volumes and things are, for the moment, copacetic.
Hope that wasn't too long and boring.    From my experience and reading on the 'net, my general sense is that there are a bunch of variables that all have to be right for this process to work.  Probably less is more and just installing ML on a disk by itself will be the most reliable method, if most wasteful of data storage.
Regardless, couldn't have done it without you, baltwo.   I don't use this forum enough to know what the etiquette and protocols are but I marked all of your posts as useful, which they were, and, finally, as solving my issue, which they did.
    Thanks again

  • Any way to archive XP recovery data without optical drive

I just bought a Thinkpad X200 with an XP downgrade.  A sheet with the documentation suggested I immediately make a set of XP recovery disks since a restore would install Vista.  The X200 comes without an optical drive.  The obvious (and annoying) solution is to buy an external drive.  But I hate to go to that expense for a single use (and couldn't find one I could borrow).  I was wondering whether there is some way I can just archive the data on a flash drive, or (without jumping through too many hoops) network the Thinkpad with my desktop and write the CDs on that machine.  (Though, obviously, if I need to do a resore at some point, I'll have to get a drive for that.)

    Hi,
I hope this is still relevant for you...
I had to face the exact same dilemma with my T43. I too wanted to make a recovery cd, but wasn't able to thanks to having a DVD read only optical drive.
    My solution was rather creative:
I googled for a software which lets you emulate a DVD burner, and what I does is it saves whatever the recovery program is sending to the "fake" burner to an .iso file, which later I could just copy to a different machine with a DVD burner and burn to disc.
My solution requires having a second machine near by and transferring the large .iso file via network.
    Hope this helps,
    Elhay

  • Best recovery application for external drives?

I have a Western Digital 500GB external drive I picked up maybe 4 or 5 years ago that I wasn't really using much, but had been the last couple weeks.  Transfered some things over to it on Sunday.   Noticed last night that it wasn't showing up on the desktop.  Went to Disc Utilities and noticed that while the drive itself was accessable, the specific drive was greyed out.   Tried to mount it manually, and no go.
Doing a disk utility repair of the drive on my current computer (iMac Core i7, running Lion) tells me there is no problem.  Doing a disk utility repair of the specified drive tells me there is a partition being updated... but nothing ever updates.
So I unplugged it and hooked up my old iMac (Intel Core 2 Duo, running Panther) and tried to repair it that way.  Now it tells me that the drive has an invalid header volume on that computer, and claims it has repaired the hard drive... but yet, again nothing.
From every indication, the drive itself has all my stuff... I just can't get to it.  And I know there are a handful of products that can scan the drive and help me retrieve the files.   Does anyone have any suggestions?  Any of the ones from the App Store, perhaps?
    Thanks.

    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • Transferring large amount of data to external drive

Hi I have 6.53GB of Data on my Mac Pro which is for a Windows XP system! I have attached an NTFS formatted 20GB empty external drive to my system via USB. When I pick up my file to transfer to the external drive a transparent 'no entry' logo appears and I cannot drop it onto the external drive. I'm aware of the 4GB limit using the FAT format but the external disk is definitely NTFS. I have considered using a dual layer DVD but would that work if I'm having these problems now? I would far prefer to just copy this to the external drive as DL DVD's are expensive! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

The issue is that the Mac OS can't write to NTFS drives without 3rd-party software.
This software can do it, but I'm not sure if it's SL compatible yet:
    http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/
There is also NTFS-3G, which is not SL compatible at this time:

  • Not able to copy data to External Drive

ok so I did do a search on this problem, but i started a new thread b/c I think i may be having a slightly different issue...please hear me out..
I have a Macbook, running Mac OS X Tiger (version 10.4.11). I have had a 500 GB external HD (MyBook) hooked up to it (via USB) for the past 4 months or so, never really had any issues, was always able to transfer files, no problem.
However, today i suddenly ran into some serious problems.  I tried to transfer some pictures to the external drive and after copying 200 or so files it gave me an error, said a specific file could not be transferred (specifically it said "the Finder could not complete the operation because some data in "IMG_3435.JPG" could not be read or written. Error Code - 36 "). At first I thought maybe that specific file was corrupted or something but i checked it out and it looked fine. So I then I tried transferring another folder of pictures, and then I got the same error right away (after transferring 3 files), for a different file.  And now i'm at the point where I can't transfer ANY files to my external HD anymore! (T_T). And it's weird, when i transfer folders, it will transfer the folder itself but not the files. Strange..
I'm so confused because it was all working fine before for months, and now, it all of the sudden doesn want to copy files to the external drive. (?)
my question is, what is the problem here? What are my options for solving this? is it my external drive, or is something wrong with my MacBook? Space is not an issue here, as there is plenty of space on external drive for the files to be copied. And I NEED to transfer files from my Macbook to an external drive because my MacBook HD is going to fill up any day now (currently have 3.5 GB free on a 74 GB HD...my macbook is about 2 years old).
Oh and i should mention, i just checked and the formatting for the external HD (the Mybook) is MS-DOS FAT 32. It currently has about 350 GB free. In another thread about this problem w/ transferring files, someone mentioned external hd's with MS DOS FAT 32 not being ideal for use with Macs, and recommended reformatting it. I just not sure if I should do this right away though, because my husband uses the external drive as well to backup stuff from his PC (so it's not being used exclusively for Macs). However if this is really the only solution then I'll just go out and buy another one to use exclusively for my MacBook and reformat it...
thanks in advance for any tips/suggestions!!

    Error -36 = I/O error
I have this similar issue before with my external HD. The worst case is that suddenly my external HD would not connect at all. Mac OS does not recognize the device. I end up reformatting the whole HD to Mac format.
I guess the problem is that Mac is having problem reading and writing to a windows formatted drive. I have a few thumb drive that will only work on windows pc but not Mac. Couldn't reformatting it under Mac either. Weird...

  • Backing up data to external drive....

I have to take my computer back after downloading 8 million or so songs and I am not looking forward to reloading them all. I have an external drive. Which part of the itunes folder do I need to save in order to be able to use the songs later. I looked at all the stuff on their website and it is for loading the music to cd or dvd's. I would happily do if 1) I did not have about 2.5 gigs of music and 2) I could use my dvd burner (hence the return to the store). Please help. Also my husband and I both have Ipods but I think I am the only authorized user on there. If he is only adding music from my library would he have authorized this computer?

Drag the entire iTunes folder to the external.
2.5 GB of music is a pretty small library.

  • User accounts and shared data on external drive

I installed Lion Server on a Mac Mini that has a smaller hard drive. Aprox 150GB. The intent is to have user files and accounts reside on a larger 4TB raid drive (2/2)  which is installed on a G4 running 10.5.8. Lion Server would access the G4 via a network connection.
    Is that possible?
When I look at an account in the users window of Lion Server it says Home Folder : Local only (pull down menu)

Unfortunately coping the partition does not work.  I don't thing you will be able to create recovery media from the copied partition on the external but if you have not yet created recovery disk you can give it a try.
If you cannot create the recovery media you will need to contact HP support to obtain a recovery kit.

  • Can one add apps to a lion recovery partition on external hd?

OK, so Lion Recovery Disk Assistant "lets you create Lion Recovery on an external drive that has all of the same capabilities as the built-in Lion Recovery." But can I add utility/diagnostic apps to the external drive, such as Disk Warrior?

If you want to have a fully bootable and functional backup OS, clone your internal drive to a partition on an external drive. Use a utility such as Carbon Copy Cloner to do it. This clone will have all apps and docs installed and usable if you need to boot to it, current as of the date the last clone was made.

  • Backup to external drive - chose drive

I would like to backup my system snapshot (using Lenovo Rescue and Recovery) to an external drive. It never asks me where to back up to. It decides where it wants to backup and it choses inappropriately. Is there a way to tell it where to go   with the  backup?

The device may be formatted for Windows, as NTFS. The format is readable, but not natively writable on a Mac. To write to the device, you must either reformat it (erasing all the contents) or install third-party software to enable write access to NTFS.
