Reinstall OS X. To do it, use OS X Recovery > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
To start in Internet Recovery, hold Command, Option (Alt) and R keys while your Mac is starting, and reinstall OS X. Doing this, Recovery HD will be created and Mac OS X will start correctly

  • Computer will not boot up.  I have tried running disk utility and re-installing OSX.  It says disk locked

I am new to Macs and have bought a 13" Macbook Pro and a IMac 21.5" 14 months ago.  I have only used the Macbook pro about 15-20 times and after upgrading to Maverick it will not boot up.  I get the white screen and a spinning circle.  I have tried Disk utility repair and even re-installing the OSX, but it says disk locked.  I do not recall setting any password protections or passwords.  I now have a brick with a lit up Apple logo.  If anyone knows how I can bypass the disk lock error or reset the laptop, please let me know.  This has not been a pleasant conversion from PC's.  Even my IMac blacks out from time to time and both happened right after my factory warranty expired.

The internal drive is malfunctioning. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional — ask if you need guidance.
If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • MacBook Pro disk locked

Trying to reinstall mavericks from CMD R start up and get message "disk locked"
Problem has been trying to start and just getting grey screen with spinning wheel at bottom. Computer won't even reboot in recovery mode.
    Any ideas?

Sounds as if your hard drive is damaged, unable to boot into even the Recovery partition.
Which model MacBook Pro do you have (e.g., "15-inch Late 2011")?

  • Recovery disk killing CPU?

    Hello. I have a HP ENVY 17-j130ea.
When I first got it, the first thing I done was create recovery disks for it to put in the box so if I need to recover it, I had the discs to do so.
Anyway, before completely setting it up I decided to run the recovery and do a minimalist recovery so it would only have the OS and the basic drivers, no software, bloatware or anything.
So I put the first disc in and restarted the laptop, the screen flashed and then turned off. The light on the caps lock would then flash once every 5-6 seconds. Looking at the HP support, apparently this is a problem with the CPU.
I took the laptop back to PC world today and got it swapped for a new one. I got this new one home, created the recovery discs, put the first one in and the exact same happened again, a quick flash on the screen and the caps lock button flashing once every 5-6 seconds.
So I now have two recovery disc sets, I made a image of each disc and ran a md5 checksum on the ISOs and they appear to match. So both laptops have generated identical recovery discs, they both verified the discs for errors and they both have killed the laptops.
So I'm going to take this laptop back again and get it swapped for a new one. But I'm going to have to wait a week for them to get a new one in.
Now I think its a pretty big problem if the recovery discs are killing the systems.
And how can I get a set of recovery discs which I can be sure are not going to kill the system as soon as I insert them into the laptop?
EDIT: I have made a video showing the problem http://youtu.be/-yEjdQ9ccgk

  • Computer freezes when trying to reload the OS from the HP recovery disks.

I have an HP Media Center m8300f desktop pc. My hard drive crash and I had to replace it. Since the recovery software was on the hard drive I had to order the recovery disks from HP. Have checked with HP and they are the correct disks for my system. The problem that I am having is this...during the recovery process everything loads from the 2 disks...the next step is to reboot the computer to complete the recovery process. During this part of the process the program is apparently creating the recovery partition on the new hard drive. The screen goes to the icons of files moving from one folder to the other so I'm assuming that it has created the partition and is dowloading the files for the recovery partition. During the process, it just locks up and halts. If i reboot the computer it says the BOOTMGR is missing and will not load windows. I've gone through the process many times and it continually halts at the same point in the process. Any ideas on whats going on and how to get past it?

i am having some success with my touch now by right clicking on the itunes icon and selecting, troubleshoot compatibility, troubleshoot program, program worked on earlier versions, then select, win vista service pack2. this is probably not a permenant fix but for the time being it seems to work. hope you have some joy with your setup. • Can Envy K203TX recovery disks be used to recover an Envy K204TX?

Hi, The first thing i did when i got my Envy K203TX notebook, was create a set of recovery disks. Then I discovered that the notebook has several issues.HP sent me an on-site tech, and the tech said these issues were caused by several faulty hardware (display panel, motherboard, and the case has a bad battery lock). He helped me return the notebook as DOA. The problem is, HP store couldn't get me another K203TX, I paid like $150 more and upgraded to an Envy K204 TX. I now have the 204TX and this notebook has no issues at all, it's as good as it can get.My recovery disk set from the Envy K203TX is still with me. Question> Can I use these disks to recover my K204TX in case disaster strikes? Or shall I throw away these disks and create a fresh set of recovery disks for this computer?

The 203 has 15.6" diagonal FHD anti-glare WLED-backlit (1920 x 1080) http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04529223 The 204 has 15.6" diagonal FHD WLED-backlit touch screen (1920 x 1080) http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04529254 I would save the old disks but make a new set from the new laptop as it has touch screen. REO

  • Is the Vista Upgrade Disk from Toshiba a Recovery Disk or a normal Vista Upgrade CD?

    Hello,
My status has now moved from COA Validated to POP Validated so I wondered how much longer it would take for the shipping. Also has anyone received the disk or know whether it is a Recovery Disk or a Upgrade Disk.
Surely they would have to lock it to Toshiba computers only? How exactly does it work?
If anyone knows please post :)
    Thanks,
    Stephen

Contacted Modus via phone today and my status has changed from COA to POP/COA they explained that means that all checks are ok and card details have been confirmed. They gave a possible delivery date sometime mid March and to just keep checking the site for the date as it will be posted. They said there is no need to do anything else. Hope this helps those waiting.

  • Recovery Disks not installing

    Hello,
Just replaced the hard drive on my son's HP ENVY M6 to a SSHD but the recovery disks purchased from HP are not working.  They will formate the new hard drive and then when copying files and does not do anything.  Have tried four times and each time it locks up.  The disks are good because they were used once before on the same laptop.  This is his third hard drive.
    Any suggestions.

    Hi @Shelly4  ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your HP ENVY m6 Notebook and it not seeing the  new SSD. Here is a link to troubleshoot recovery issues with a hard drive, that might help. Check the link that states a recovery from CD or DVD.
I recommend to restore the BIOS defaults. You could restore the BIOS with this document selecting the reloading the BIOS default settings.
Restoring the BIOS should fix the issue as it will force the BIOS to look at the New HDD and does the BIOS see the New HDD.
Did you change the boot order to reflect the SSD?
Here is a document on troubleshooting a new Hard Drive installation. It is for a desk top but works the same for Notebooks.
Please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices, as these could cause some issues.
    I hope this helps.
    Thanks.

  • Perform a clean install from recovery disks

    Hi all,
I have the model (L505-S5995). I created the recovery disks (3 dvds in total 2 for system and 1 for software).
The question is: If I use these disks it will reinstall the Operating system (Windows 7 Home Premium) along with
toshiba bundled software (which are installed After the Operating system had been installed), Is there a way to install only the Operating system and stop the automated bundled software installation?
Also after I used the recovery discs once (instead of holding '0' while powering on the computer) I can no longer see the 8GB hidden drive at the end in Disk management window, also holding '0' will not get me to the recovery from harddisk tool (I think i should somehow get the 8GB recovery partition back, but how?)

You can only restore the system back to it's out of box state.  You can't just install WIndows from it.  To do that you'll need to purchase a regular version of Windows.
Check out the User's Guide for that model to see exactly what the Recovery System will do and how to use it.  The User's Guide is found on your hard drive in Adobe Acrobat Format and can be downloaded from the Product Support Link at the top of this page.
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

  • How do I format an external HD with Recovery Disk Assistant on?

    Hi,
I have seen a couple of threads on this, but I'm still not "Compos Mentis" with how to format an external drive with the Recovery Disk Assistant on.
I have a 320GB which has my recovery disk assistant on - "Don't ask!" - Anyway it goes without saying that I want it all back, but I'll be damned if I can get there. I have managed to view (after a lot of faffing) what I thought was the External Drive, but now realise that it's not...this is what I am now seeing - are these removable via partition (disk0s1 & Recovery HD) as I have been merrily trying to erase them in he belief that they were the external HD and as far as I can see nothing has changed...only my annoyance!
Anyway in short, I need this
    A) view the external drive and
    B) Format it back to 320GB
Can anyone spoon feed me a way out?
    Thanks

I don't understand what you mean by, "how to format an external drive with the Recovery Disk Assistant on."
You don't need to use the Recovery HD to format an external drive. Just use Disk Utility:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.

  • Satellite A60-218 - Where to download the recovery disk?

I have a Toshiba Satellite S60. It is a job computer and it is actually not mine but as I work with and I want it to be faster.
Someone on the past formated it with a F@kE Windows XP installation disk and all the drivers got lost. Not just the wireless card but also sound and graphics card.
I found after a lot of searching the sound driver. The main problem is that it is not genuine cpoy of windows and it is very slow because of trojan, etc.
I beleive the fastest way to fix it is to recover the factory settings (all CDs are lost). Only I could not find in the website the S60 satellite. Is there a recovery iso image to download?
Can anyone help me? I am really desperate...

    Hi
Im not sure if you would be able to order the Recovery disk for this Sat A60 notebook.
Its a older series and I believe that the Recovery disk are not more available for this model. But of course you should get in contact with the local ASP to get more details
Maybe they have some disk on stock.
However, the WIN XP drivers can be found on the Toshiba European driver page.
Because the A60 is an older notebook, the drivers have been moved to the Archive area!
Check archive and you would find all XP drivers.
PS: You should use a original Win XP disk ;) the copy are not legal and you could not run any necessary updates which are really important to get rid of the Win XP bugs.
    Cheers
