Recovery disks (no XP Pro)

From the posts I've read, incorrect recovery disks appear to be a rather common problem!  (I did not create my own disks when the computer arrived because they were included with the laptop.)
Okay...I was infected with a  particularly malicious malware/virus and after spending days trying to clean it up myself, ended up taking it in to a local tech shop (we've used this guy before and he is very good).  When I purchased my laptop, it came with Vista but I paid to have the XP Pro option installed.  So, the tech guy calls and wants my XP Pro product ID so he can re-install it, but the sticker on the bottom is only the Vista sticker.  I can't give him one so I called Toshiba Tech Support and they gave me a total run around, and I never did get an answer for why I don't have the ID code.  They did tell me, though, that my recovery disks will restore XP.  Gave my tech guy the recovery disks, but there is ONLY Vista on them, NOT XP Pro.  (Yet, gee, when I call tech support and give them my serial number, the first thing they tell me is that my OS is XP Pro!)
I called Toshiba again today and told them about the disk discrepancy, to which they replied that I can do the HDD Recovery Utility restoration, which will bring back my XP Pro (restore to factory).  If that doesn't work, I can order new recovery disks and since I "already own a license for XP Pro" there will only be a shipping and handling charge of $24.95.  I'm sorry, but doesn't anyone else agree that that is a little high for a S&H charge?  I mean, postage isn't that high yet!  Has anyone gotten Toshiba to ship these for free?  (Btw, that was a direct quote by Toshiba support!)
Can anyone tell me why there is no product ID included for XP Pro?  (I guess I can see if they are using the multiple user versions when they install it, but still...)  I'm going to tell my tech guy to try the recovery utility, that is, if he hasn't deleted the partitions!  If this doesn't work, is my only option going to be ordering the disks from them and biting the bullet and paying their outrageous S&H charges?  Anyone have any other advice or suggestions?
I realize I'm a little disorganized with this post, but I am so frustrated by everyone I've had to deal with!!!  (Oh yeah, and the support call started with Toshiba telling me since my laptop is out of warranty I would be paying $35 for this call!  Uh...no I won't since this is a problem YOU created!!!  Arrghh!)
Okay, my tech guy just tried the Toshiba recovery utility and got nothing but the boot screen, NOT the recovery screen.  What do I do now???
Thanks for any replies

Hi Richard,
The Windows backup utility for XP Home can normally be found in a folder called 'ValueAdd' on the C: drive. I seem to recalkl that it is a sub-folder called 'MSFT'.
Since taking regular backups is highly desirable and needs to be dependable you could always consider investing in a purpose-made utility such as Acronis True Image, or Norton Ghost for this purpose, or if you have a full version of NERO installed then you could try Nero Backitup.

    i've read this:
    http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-create-windows-8-recovery-drive/
and it says the drive needs to be at least 256mb... isnt that a little too small for the whole Win8 recovery file?
If you read down in that link you reference, you'll see this:  http://cloud.intowindows.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/Create-Windows-8-Recovery-Drive-Step9.jpg with a checkbox for "copy the contents of the recovery partition to the recovery drive".
That will include the Lenovo recovery image - or it's supposed to anyway.  I can't test since I only have a 7 -> 8 updated machine at the moment.  This only works correctly when used on a machine containing the original Lenovo Win 8 install.
256MB gets you the Win 8 recovery/repair tools but not the image.  When the image is included it will take multiple GB.  I'm told an 8G flash drive is required.

  • T500 with recovery disks 45M3789: xp pro possible?

I am trying to figure out if I can use this recovery disk to get back XP Pro:
Mfg part #                    FRU part #          Description
    45M3789                       00000000       XPPW7PW7RCVUSE:BOMS,
                                                                     NOT SHIPPABLE ACROS
T500 model  2082-bku originally came with XP but  was upgraded to windows 7 which wiped out hard drive. No backup disks were separately burned from the XP hard drive before the upgrade.
Unit came with this recovery disk but I cannot find any reference to it anywhere. I am reluctant to go thru wiping out hard drive until I have some idea what I will end up with. Anyone have this or know what it does, and specifically if it will get XP somewhere where I can end up using it?  Any help appreciated. (I have to go back and reuse some obsolete software which is incompatable with Win 7.)

    Hi bacall9y,
I'm sorry. The info i found about  Mfg part #45M3789 is more complicated than i expected. It seems to me that this package Mfg part #45M3789 has different CDs.
I suggest you to speak with Sales person as they know much more than me. Maybe you can ask for recovery media as well since you do not create one for yourself when you received the machine.
In the mean time, why don't you try out the windows xp mode in win 7? I understand you would like to run some programs that is not compatible with win 7. I also notice that you have Win 7 Professional version. Perhaps you can check out the Windows XP Mode in Win 7 and the FAQ.  In short, this feature allow you to install and run programs that are only compatible with windows XP while you're in Win 7 environment.
FYI, this Windows XP Mode feature offered by Microsoft only for Win 7 Enterprise, Professional and Ultimate version.

  • How do I create a recovery disk for MacBook Pro

I want to restore my MacBook Pro to it's factory setup

    What didn't work?
    Booting or restoring?
Cmd-R goes to the hard drive recovery partition.
Cmd-Opt-R goes to Internet Recovery and requires a WiFi network with WPA/WPA2 encryption (or an ethernet cable).
Are you using an external wireless keyboard?

  • Upgrading T430 preloaded with Windows 7 Pro to Windows 8 With Recovery Disks

I just got 19 T430 laptops that we thought would have Windows 8 on them but them came with a preload of Windows 7 Pro and recovery disks for Windows 8. The recovery disks have instructions for using them to upgrade to 8, but the laptop won't boot to the cd/dvd drive. I'm not sure if there is a problem with the instructions or if the disks aren't bootable. I can see them and their contents through Windows Explorer, so I know the drive works.

If it is like the other sets I have seen, there will be 2 "applications and drivers" disk and one operating system disk. You boot from the first "applications and drivers" disk. It will boot, and then call for the other disks when needed. If I remember right, the order is App 1, OS, App1, App2.  I suggest backing up your win7 image before installing win8.  I used windows 8 just long enough to figure out that I hate it.

  • Satellite Pro A200 - New ODD ignors the Recovery disk

    Hi,
_Satellite Pro A200 PSAE4E Windows XP_
I started getting bad “Not-Ready” system errors on the original ODD. Toshiba Disc Creator report: TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-L632H TO01. I tried the FW update, but that did not help.
I replaced the ODD with a new one from Amazon. Toshiba Disc Creator report: TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-L632H SC04. The new ODD is listed as suitable in the User Manual - it’s the same model as the original. The new ODD works perfectly for normal use within XP. But when I attempt to use the Recovery Disk, it is ignored and XP always boots from the HDD. And when I press F12 during boot, the new ODD is not listed.
Can you assist me to get the ODD recognised at boot time please?
    Thanks.
    Mike

    Thank you for your replies.
To be exact, I see the following at boot time:
F12 shows only HD and LAN boot options.
F2 shows the usual 4 options, HD, ODD, Floppy and LAN.
But since I have no floppy either, I suspect the F12 list is the correct one - and it fails to show an ODD option.
    @C3PO
Yes, Ive tried all those ideas, and I have the latest A200 BIOS.
    @Akuma
So it is insufficient to have the correct model number? It should be explained somewhere that even if you have the correct ODD model, it may still not work.
Please can you give me a link to Toshiba, so that I can obtain a suitable ODD. I'm in England.
    Thanks for your swift assistance.
    Mike

    Hello Antti
You must not use the recovery CD for installation. You can also use Microsoft WXP CD for installation. All necessary drivers on English you can find on Toshiba download page under http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_drivers_bios.jsp

i have macbook pro the recovery is in hard disk and not have recovery disk and hard disk stop working now i want to change hard disk but how can i recovery my macbook pro can help me ?

"it shows macintosh HD OSX 10.9.5 but the hard drive that is supposed to be in the upper right corner is not showing up. So it is booting from that drive."
Ok go to "Finder" preferences and make sure the "Hard disk" box is checked.
That will make your boot disk show up in the upper right corner. You can tell it's a boot disk because all the files will look like this instead of just being blank files.

  • Problems reformatting MacBook Pro recovery disk missing

Hacing problems reformatting MacBook pro. Tried startup with option key but recovery disk option missing. Then tried the Mac os x disc that came with the MacBook Pro however when I get to the selection of where I want to install no HD option appears. Start up disk also appears to be missing. Can only start Mac in safe mode.

Remind them at this time you don't desire a service account, just desire a disc.  The only reason you would want an account is if you wanted them to help you with actual troubleshooting.

  • Satellite Pro C650: Questions regarding Recovery disk installation

    Hi
can someone please give me a little bit of help?
I am having to buy and install a recovery disk for my Sat Pro C650.
When I get it do i just plug in and play it. I have also lost windows 7 which was pre-installed, or would I then need to also buy a new copy of windows 7 and install that too?
Will it then just go back to how it was when we brought it.
Or do I need to do something else after the recovery disk is installed.
    Thanks
    Tina

Hi Tina and welcome to our Toshiba community.
Here is my comment to your posting:
Every new Toshiba notebook is delivered with original preinstalled operating system and saved recovery image on HDD. There are two possibilities for OS installation:
-usage of HDD recovery installation and
-usage of recovery DVD that must be created by notebook owner.
Toshiba recommends creation of DVD disc. Why? If something goes wrong with HDD (defective) you can built-in new HDD and use recovery disc to have factory settings again. So please, if possible, create this recovery disc as soon as possible.
    Back to your questions:
    > When I get it do I just plug in and play it. I have also lost windows 7 which was pre-installed, or would I then need to also buy a new copy of windows 7 and install that too?
    Usage of DVD is simply:
Start your notebook and press F12 to enter boot options menu
Put recovery DVD into optical disc drive
Choose CD/DVD device on the menu and press ENTER
Follow what happen on the screen
    > Will it then just go back to how it was when we brought it.
    Yes.
    > Or do I need to do something else after the recovery disk is installed.
No. Everything will be installed automatically.
If you have more questions you are welcome.
