  • PREINST.SWM recovery file cannot be read

    Hi
My L300D series laptop got a pretty bad virus last month. To be safter I would like to reinstall my Vista. I did not have a recovery partition and did not have a set of recovery CDS that I could find for the laptop. After browsing the forums I decided it was best that I ordered a set directly from toshiba. After a week it finally arrived this thursday.
I began installation as usual and it was doing fine for the first 5 mins and then it gave me the
"PREINST.SWM recovery file cannot be read" error. I tried it click retry almost half a dozen times but nothing happend. all i get is the
Cannot read from source file or disk. PREINST.SWM
                          Type SWM file
                         Size 624 MB
                         Date modified 3/1/2007 2:30 PM.
So i read further on the forums and I tried a few other options...
    What I have tried:
    1. Boot the Recovery disc or HDD image and select System Recovery Options.
     2. Follow the prompts until you get to the menu and then select a command prompt.
     3. Copy the \zzimages\zzimages directory for all recovery discs to a temp directory on the hard drive (c:\temp). 4. Change to the Bin directory on the first recovery disc and run "tosimagex /apply c:\temp\preinst.swm 1 c:\ /ref c:\temp\preinst*.swm" without the quotes.
    D:\BIN>tosimagex /apply c:\temp\preinst.swm 1 c:\ /ref c:\temp\preinst*.swm
    WIM File: c:\temp\preinst.swm(1)
    Dst File: c:\
    App Name: /ref
    Total Parts: 10
    Add splited image: c:\temp\preinst2.swm
    Add splited image: c:\temp\preinst3.swm
    Add splited image: c:\temp\preinst4.swm
    .\TixRestore.cpp(71): Error FC060002
but when i try and copy the file it gives me a cyclic redundacy error. My next attempt was to place the DVD toshiba shipped me on another computer and try and extract and burn the preinst.swm into another CD so i can copy it to the drive.. but that is the only file that wont copy of the cd.. and crashes my explorer in windows 7...
Now toshiba told me it was a hardware issue.. and my warrantly is over.. adn that i should ge the cd drive fixed.. to which i said.. the CD drive worked last week.. I installed adobe from it.. and the harddrive works just fine.. recent scan had no bad sectors and is more than capable of runnin Linux..from a partition..they had no answer and I havnt heard from them again although i was told they would contact me. I need the laptop ready in the next day or two as spring break is over.
    Any suggestions???

I have a Satellite L300D also. I too have a corrupt file on my Vista 64-bit Home Premium restore DVD volume 1 of 2 and have nuked my restore partition. BUT my problem file is a different file than yours. Perhaps we can swap missing files and rebuild and reburn our DVD's? You can contact me directly via email using my username and then append @hotmail.com on the end. I would be happy to help you out and give you PREINST.SWM if you can give me PREINST2.SWM in return. We can do this via FTP, Dropbox or filesharing...whatever you wish. Paying Toshiba $45 for DVD's they should have included for free really bothers me...

  • To which folder does OSX background saved TextEdit recovery files?

Hi, while traveling without an internet connection I workd on a TextEdit file which was probably saved in the background automatically as a temp recovery file...somehow I lost the file, whether through a failed iCloud synch upon returning home or whatever...I think though that I may have backedup my system with Time Machine before losing the file altogether. Could a background recovery version of it be in a folder accessible through Time Machine?
(By a background saved recovery file I mean the temp TextEdit file which in the event of a crash or system restart would allow the file to be recovered.)
    Thanks

sorry...was exhausted, will rewrite more clearly

  • Do I need to create a recovery file for my new laptop if there is a HP recovery

    I have just bought a HP Pavilion 15 Notebook PC 15 - n219 sa
Serial : [Edited for Personal Information]
    Product # : F9U67EA#ABU
    There is a recovery partition.
I am a bit confused on the issue of recovery file creation. I have found instructions on youtube on the the creation of an image of the laptop but I wonder why I need to do that given there is a HP recovery manager.
Although I do not really know what the manager does.
Can anyone tell me what the best strategy is regarding recovery files for this laptop taking in to account the partition.
After I have done this I wish to remove macfee and install the Norton I bought. Do I need to disable the macafee? If so how do I do this?
Can I remove the macefee to save space on the hard drive?
If you can help with these questions that would be much appreciate.
I gues I just want to do the right thing with this new laptop and avoid deleting too much whilst savinbg space and having a protected machine I can restore.
    Thank you

    Hi,
You should definetely create a set of Recovery Media - this is your copy of the operating system.  An example of when you may need this would be if you had to replace the Hard Drive - details on creating this can be found on the following HP document.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c03481733&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en
Regarding McAfee, you should uninstall this first before trying to install Norton - you can do this in the usual way by opening Windows Control Panel, open Programs and Features, right click the entry for McAfee and select Uninstall.  When the process has completed, restart the notebook before installing Norton.

  • How can i restore system recovery files to their original location? (HP Pavillion p6540F desktop)

I have a HP Pavillion P6540F desktop running Windows 7 Home Premium. A few days ago a problem occured with windows which basically wiped out my OS and I had to restore my computer to factory settings. Before restoring my computer I backed up all of my files to a disk. Upon reinstalling windows I placed the disk with all of my recovery files on it into my computer and ran the recovery .exe file which began the download of my files. This all worked perfectly fine but the problem is that these files only saved to a file on my desktop and did not restore to their original locations. Is there any way to get these files to restore to the correct locations on my computer without having to manually drag the folders to their former locations? Honestly I do not know where many of these files were located before the restore, and many items such as preferences for certain programs are impossible for me to relocate. Thanks for the help.

The backup used in Recovery only restores the files to a folder, leaving the owner to move them.I agree, not the most helpful backup app but better than nothing I suppose.

Having the hdd in Dynamic state breaks Recovery function. Converting bck to Basic should not delete your data...unless the data is on the extra partition you need to delete in order to get the hdd back to Basic.

  • Unable to restore System Recovery Files in desktop folder

I owned an HP Pavilion A6037C desktop computer (Running Vista).  It began to give me serious issues in July so i used the HP System Backup and Restore program to create a backup of all my files.  i saved these files on an external HD so i wouldn't lose my files if the computer crashed.  This backup was created in a folder called MINWINPC.  In that folder was this file name "Backup Files 2011-5-7 234595". in that folder was a file list
    Backup.001.App
    Backup.002.fbw
    Backup.003.fbw
    Backup.004.fbw
    and so on ....
I have since removed the first computer (although i still have it in my posession), and have replaced it with an HP Pavilion P6245f desktop running Windows 7.
Now that i have a newer desktop in place i wanted to install some of my old files from my backup that is saved on my external hard drive.  i've connected the external hard drive to the new computer and i've ran the Backup.001.App.  It restored my old files to a folder on my desktop called "Shortcut to System Recovery Files".  It's a rather large file (i believe 50 GB) that is stored in another folder titled "C".  In this folder i can see the seperate file folders i'm assuming were from my original desktop.  when i access my username and select for instance "My Pictures" folder, it shows a list of all my orginal files.  When i double click a picture, it says :
"File not readable. You can not open this file. Please check the readability of this file."
when i try to open any other type of file (such as .pdf's or word documents, or spreadsheets), it basically says the same thing.
"Can not access the document C:\(filelocation).  The document may already be open or a read only document.  The name and path may be invalid. The document may no longer exist, or it may already be open".

  • How do I disable auto-recovery files from opening every time I open Photoshop?

Hi! I have read several forums about how to disable the auto-recovery feature. However, I don't want to disable the auto-recovery because I like that it saves my work in case of crash. It's just annoying that everytime I open photoshop all those previous files auto open. Is there anyway to make it stop? I read that there is a file that you delete, but will that stop the auto-recovery feature? Thanks in advance for your help!
Oh! It's Photoshop CS 6 and the os is Mountain Lion. Thanks!

On Windows, if Photoshop crashes, the autorecovery files are not cleared. On next launch, Photoshop sees those autorecovery files and reopens them.
When Photoshop closes successfully, it deletes these autorecovery files, and thus on the next launch no recovery files should be opened.
So if your files are continually opening, then Photoshop is in essence crashing every time you close it (assuming you are trying to close Photoshop each time).
May need to look at doing things like recreating the preference files or running Photoshop in a new user.

  • Where are the auto recovery files stored for Visio 2010?

I have auto recovery set for every 5 minutes.  I have been working on a file that has been saved several times a day.  Today when just moving a shape Viso 2010 crashed after I had been working on the file for over 2 hours.  Auto recovery popped
up every 5 minutes indicating it was saving the file.  After the crash the ony file I could find was the file as it was when I first opened it this AM.  None of the work done today was saved.
Did auto recovery completely fail?  Where can I look for the auto recovery file?
I have not done a reboot because I am afraid that if the file exits it will be gone for sure if I reboot.  Any suggestions are welcome.
There must be a temp file or something that I can look for but not sure what the extension would be or the location.
    Hopefully someone here can help.
    thanks,
    greg

How do I know? You state the the auto-save file extension is .vxd - that's the Visio document XML format.
You can change this in File -> Options -> Save
As for the crashes, are there any messages when a crash occurs?
Check that the video drivers you have are the latest, try a different screen resolution to see if that changes anything and turn off or change any screen accelerators.

My mistake - the file format is .vsd - standard visio format

  • R705-P35 Recovery File Size

I'd like to create a set of recovery files on a flash drive.  How big are those files (i.e. what is the minimum flash drive size I will need)?

Kindly point out the page number where your User's Guide specifies 8 GB as the size required for a USB drive backup. I've read the applicable pages twice and can find no reference to actual size needed for either DVD's or USB Flash Drive. In fact, the instructions specifically say the size varies by computer model and will be shown when the Recovery Creator Utility is started.

  • Deleting the C:\System Recovery Files folder

In 2012 someone already posted this and I have the same problem.  Can't anyone solve this?  How about someone from HP or Microsoft.   Problem deleting the C:\System Recovery Files folder ‎01-08-2012 10:37 AM My computer, a HP-Pavillion desktop, model RK575AA-ABA a1740n running Windows Vista Home Premium, was getting more and more sluggish. One morning, when booting, I pressed F11 and clicked on "Backup and Recovery". The process took a while and resulted in a MINWINPC folder on my backup drive containing my C: drive in compressed form. The rest of the process was to take the computer back to its previous capabilities: formatting, installating the factory image of the system and installating my programs. Once this was completed, I decompressed the MINWINPC and it deposited all of the files from my previous C: drive into a "System Recovery Files" folder on my C: drive. From that folder, I copied and pasted the users data.
The C:\System Recovery Files folder is still on my C: drive, it has served its purpose and is not needed any longer. I tried to delete it. I took administrator priviledges and right-clicked the folder and selected the "Delete" command. Surprise! Access was denied and I cancelled the command. I tried a lot of tricks gathered by a search on the Web (take ownership from the virtual menu properties and Security panel, use TakeOwnership and Unlocker) to no avail though I had very little problem deleting users data and all the files resulting from the installation of applications. Deleting the AppData folder required more patience but there was no way to delete sub-folders of Program Files containing  Window programs (Internet Explorer, Microsoft Security Client, Windows Calendar, ...). An attempt to use Unlocker even resulted in a BSOD indicating a last ditch effort by Windows to save its integrity.
    What can I do?

Unless this folder is excessive in size, why be worried?   If you absolutely have to remove the folder, you could do it outside of Windows, since windows will not let it be done.  My choice is to get a Linux Live, make the CD to load it and then reboot to the Linux by booting to the Linux Live CD.  It will not alter the Windows install but will allow the user to remove or write whatever they want to the hard drive.  I have done this many times.  To use a user friendly  Distro look for Linux Mint or Ubuntu.Be cautioned that bad things can happen to any other files if any are accidentally altered or deleted will using this method.  The risk however is yours, depending on how much this Recovery file folder is annoying to you.

  • Recovery file in Library

I have a letter that I received a while back that had photo attachments of about 65mb. This letter multiplies in a recovery file to huge preportions.  I ditch it and find later on it has returned and multiplied again.  It just uses up huge chunks.  I ditch it restart, then later on find it back again.

    Hi Gerhard,
I had it a few times as well and after searching and hunting longer the first time, I now always do an IPL and this has always helped ...

It would be great to get an answer how to read those files in my CD's.
The CD's are numbered from 1 to 5 so i wont be making mistakes.

    Hi,
You should be able to perform a System Recovery by booting directly from the discs you've created - try the following.
    Shutdown the notebook.
Tap away at the esc key as soon as you start the notebook to enter the Start-up Menu.
    Insert the disc 1.
Select Boot options menu ( f9 ), use the arrow keys to select the CD/DVD drive and hit enter.  You may also get a prompt to 'Press any key to continue' - do this if asked.
This should start the recovery process and you will be prompted when to insert the subsequent discs.
