Recovery from Finder and Trash

I had made files on my desktop then made a copy of them and put it in the finder listing on the side. I was cleaning my desktop and put the original files in the trash and emptied the trash, i did not know that the copies of the files that i put in the finder bar would also disappear when i emptied the trash. I Do not have time machine on my Mac.
Question: Is there a way to re locate your old files from within your computer or are the files forever gone?

those files are gone. the links in the sidebar are just aliases to the originals, not actual files.
the only way to (possibly) recover those files is to use data recovery software like Filesalvage or Data Rescue II.
and I suggest you start backing up to prevent these kinds of problems in the future.

If you have been backing up on Timemachine.
All you need to do is enter time machine... Then the rest is obvious.
Find the iTunes folder and hit 'Restor'.
If not the only way to get all your iTunes music back is to enter iTunes Store.
On the right hand side you should see 'Purchased'.
Click 'purchased' and there you have it.

  • My icons are missing from finder and Safari.

Not sure what I have done. My icons are missing from finder and Safari, tired the customise tool bar option with no joy,   please help.

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.) No data/files will be erased. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430

  • I deleted all my emails from inbox and trash, but the mail "file" has 2GB. How can I permantely delete this information from my iphone4?

How can I permantely delete email information from my iphone4?
I deleted all my emails from inbox and trash, but the Mail "file" still has 2GB...

Does anyone have an answer to this problem? It's been 4 or 5 days now and iCloud still says I have 0kb of 5GB available, and 6.1GB of mail on iCloud. I guess that's better than yesterday when it said I had 8.3GB of mail. Does anyone know if it simply takes Apple a week to actually empty a mailbox?
thanks in advance, hopefully tomorrow it says I have only 4GB of non-existent mail and I can start using it again...

  • No finder and trash icon

I tried to modify my dock using leopard docks and when I changed it, I lost my finder and trash icon, there is a blank space and when I roll my mouse over it, it shows the name, but not the icon.
And I can`t even get the right-click pop-up menu which I usually get by right-clicking or command+click on my mac.
    Please help...

    Yes I am running
    Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)
And I even checked the roaring apps website, and the Leopard docks app is compatible with my OS.
I just noticed that there is no full screen icon on the top right.      (The icon wich you can toggle full screen with)

  • RMAN recovery from tape and disk?

    Hey Guys,
    Here is my scenario: -
I have Oracle 10g and I am using RMAN to backup to disk and then I use Networker to backup on tapes from disk (retention is set to 30 days on tapes). On RMAN - my retention policy is set to recovery window of 5 days after which it deletes the obsolete backup from disk and updates the control file.
    My Questions:
    1. If I have to recover any datafile or tablespace 20 days ago how can I restore it on Production. Since I am also backing up control files on tapes but my current control file will not have 20 days old information. Is there any way that I can restore my old backup?
2.How can I test my tape backup which is older than 5 days. In other words how can I restore my database from tape on another server/
    Please suggest.

If you need to restore the whole database to a point in time that is 20 days old, you "only" need:
    1. to identify the right control file backup
    2. restore this control file backup with Networker
    3. start the instance in mount mode
    4. list required datafiles and archived redo logs backup sets listed in this control file with LIST BACKUP
    5. restore these backup sets with Networker
    6. restore and recover database with RMAN with the right SET UNTIL clause.
If you need to restore only 1 tablespace, that's Tablespace Point In Time Recovery (TSPITR) and is another story.
I don't think you can only restore 1 datafile that is 20 days old and leave other datafiles up-to-date (unless there is only 1 datafile in the tablespace and in this case this is TSPITR).

  • Icons missing from Finder and desktop

I have just bought a new iMac. Most of the proper icons for the various applications and folders are not showing in the Finder; instead there is a generic b&w icon that is difficult to see. The icons of files (Word, Excel. Acrobat) on my desktop do show up briefly when I start-up, but then one-by-one change to the nondescript icons. Curiously, one Excel file is OK, but that is the only one.
Can anyone help me on this one?
    Ian

There is a Use As Default button but in order to use it for preview icons you first have to open a folder in the Finder and set it to icon view; then the View>Show View Options menu will include a Use As Default button at the bottom.
Whether that works in Dock stacks I don't know because the first thing I did with my new Macs was disable the abominable stacks using a 3rd-party utility called Quay. Rumour has it that the forthcoming Os 10.5.2 update will have that option built in (as it should have been from day 1).
As things stand, you can either live with the seriously misjudged default behaviour of folders added to the Dock or you can force the folder icons to show a constant icon by adding a file or folder with the desired icon to each of the dock folders and putting a space at the start of its filename so that it is always the first item in the list. Alternatively, the aforementioned Quay lets you set a custom icon for each Dock folder.

  • Finder and trash is not opening.

When I click on the finder icon and the trash icon in the dock, nothing happens. Even when I right click and press New Finder Window, nothing happens. If I want to upload a file, a window doesn't pop up for me to be able to access my files. When I edit a Pages document, it somehow says it is saved, but doesn't tell me where. On my desktop I have some files and folders, the images and other files open but not folders. With the trash I am somehow able to right click it and empty the trash can. Can someone please help solve this problem. I have restarted my Macbook Pro 13inch running OS X Mavericks Version 10.9.3 several times and it still doesn't work. I even tried booting in safe mode but finder still doesn't work.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if Finder crashed, you would enter "Finder" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Data Recovery from Partitioned and formatted Bit Locker Encrypted Drive

Recently because of some issues in windows 7 installation from windows 8 installed OS. it was giving as the disc is dynamic windows can not be installed on it. so at last after struggling hard no other solution i partitioned and formatted my whole
drive so all data gone included the drive which was encrypted by bit lockers.
For recovery i used many software such as ontrack easy recover, get data back, recovery my files professional edition but still i couldnt able to recover my data from that drive. then i found some suggestion Using CMD to decrypt my data first
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee523219(WS.10).aspx
where it shows it successfully decrypt my data at that moment my drives were in RAW format excluding on which windows is installed and then in CMD i check Chdsk which also shows no problem found. but now problem is still i coudnt able to recover
my data then i format the drive D and again tried to recover data using above software after decryption still no result.
Now i need assistance how i can recover my encrypted drive as it was partitioned and also formatted but decrypted also as i have its recovery key too. thanks

    Hi ,
I am afraid that we cannot get the data back if the drive has been formatted even if use the
    BitLocker Repair Tool.
You’d better contact your local data recovery center to try to get data back.

  • My mac book pro (2.66Ghz Intel core i7 4Gb ram) crashes every time I open iPhoto, browse photos or videos from Finder and work with slides, this started after I upgraded to mountain lion, what can I do??

I updated my OS to mountain lion and since then my mac book pro is virtually useless, seeng pictures, videos, using graphics applications and Iphoto is impossible, the screen goes black, and the system restarts.
This even happens sometimes at login, the login screen appears then the computer crashes and restarts, sometimes more than once, yesterday it even happened 6 times in a row before I was actually able to enter the password and log in.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then either copy or drag it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}'
Copy (command-C) the selected text to the Clipboard. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered. You can do that by copy-and-paste as well. Omit the final line ending in “$”. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|edu\.mit|org\.(amavis|apache|cups|isc|ntp|postfix|x)/{print $3}'
This time, you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. It won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|edu\.mit|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Running scripts from Finder, and printing without a dialog

    Two questions:
    1. I need to launch an InDesign script from outside of InDesign -- such as launching the script from the finder (Mac) and having it run in InDesign. How can I do this?
    2. How can I script printing a document so that it automatically prints, bypassing the Print dialog box that a user would need to click on (I want it to print automatically in the background without the user doing anything)?

    1. Just save your script as an application and wrap your stuff in an "on run" statement.
    on run
    tell application "Adobe InDesign"
    --do stuff
    end
    end
See the Applescript Language Reference at developer.apple.com/applescript for more info.
    2. Yup. The "do stuff" in your case will probably look something like this:
    tell active document
--Set up options, assumes you have created a printer preset
-- with the output options you want
set active printer preset of print preferences to "my printer preset"
set page range of print preferences to all pages
    --And then print
    print without print dialog
    end
