Recovery from Online backup

Hai All,
I regularly take hot backup via a script. In script copy all datafiles and archivelogs to the backup destination. One conrolfile is created using 'alter database backup control file to c:/backup.ctl' . Thus controlfile is also generated.
I copy the backup files (includes datafiles and controlfiles) to a test machine . In test machine I created a database with the same name of production database. I replace the present files with the hot backup files (keep existing redo log files). When I open the database, recovery asked... I apply the backup archive log files. Even when reach the maximum archive files in my hand. recvery not stop... . This is the problem .. How It happened ? How to open the database with the backup files in my hand only.
I copy the remaining archive log files and redo log files from production database and apply. then I open the database with resetlogs . It works fine......
How to resolve the mentioning problem in second paragraph?
Please help?
Shiju

How do you backup your database? Do you using RMAN to backup your database? or you use ALTER TABLESPACE BEGING BCKUP method to backup your database?
Which version of Oracle are you using? Is there anything wrong configure autobackup of controlfile to avoid explicitly taking controlefile bakup?
If you want to test your bakcup or wanted to create another copy (clone) of the database using your valid backup, why did you create the second database and did the other fuss?
You can simply, bring up the instance, restore and recovery using your backups.
I guess, the problem was with redo log files. You have overwritten all the datafiles, controlfile, but not redo log files, may be the redo log sequence mismatch cuased this behaviour.

    Hi
    We have a Windows 2012 server with Exchange 2013, all is working fine except now i am getting issues with the backup.
    'Exchange - The application will not be available for recovery from this backup. the consistency check failed for the component Microsoft Exchange Server'
    I have checked the database all is fine, i have created a new db and move all mailbox;s over and then removed the old db, i have enabled circular logging and then disabled it, it seems no matter what i do i cannot get a full backup!
    i did have to restore the server once and the backups still worked for about 4 days after that and then stopped, i have also tried to remove and re add the backup role!
    i am stumped, any advice would be great!

    Hi
    Ok, i created a test db and tried to back it up right away, it failed, i did not add any mailbox's to it either. i got quite a few events in the windows logs, as well as the same event above i got the following:

  • How to do media recovery from cold backup?????????/

    Hi
    i take cold backup of my 9i database ....
    in case my database is up .....
    how will i recover my database if i lose a single database file and i want to recover it from cold backup......
    Thanks in advance
    Gagan

    Here you go
    These are the steps:
    1. Restore the lost file from a backup.
    2. If the database is down, mount it.
         SVRMGR> STARTUP MOUNT PFILE=<location_of_pfile>;
    3. Issue the following query:
    SVRMGR> SELECT V1.GROUP#, MEMBER, SEQUENCE#,
    FIRST_CHANGE#
    FROM V$LOG V1, V$LOGFILE V2
    WHERE V1.GROUP# = V2.GROUP# ;
    This will list all your online redolog files and their respective
    sequence and first change numbers.
    4. If the database is in NOARCHIVELOG mode, issue the query:
         SVRMGR> SELECT FILE#, CHANGE# FROM V$RECOVER_FILE;
    If the CHANGE# is GREATER than the minimum FIRST_CHANGE# of your logs,
    the datafile can be recovered. Just keep in mind that all the logs to
    applied will be online logs, and move on to step 5.
    If the CHANGE# is LESS than the minimum FIRST_CHANGE# of your logs, the
    file cannot be recovered. Your options at this point would be to restore
    the most recent full backup (and thus lose all changes to the database
    since) or recreate the tablespace as explained in scenario a.
    5. Recover the datafile:
    SVRMGR> RECOVER DATAFILE '<full_path_file_name>'
    6. Confirm each of the logs that you are prompted for until you receive the
    message "Media recovery complete". If you are prompted for a non-existing
    archived log, Oracle probably needs one or more of the online logs to
    proceed with the recovery. Compare the sequence number referenced in the
    ORA-280 message with the sequence numbers of your online logs. Then enter
    the full path name of one of the members of the redo group whose sequence
    number matches the one you are being asked for. Keep entering online logs
    as requested until you receive the message "Media recovery complete"
    7. If the database is at mount point, open it.

  • Recovery from hot backup

    I have a problem with recovery hot backup from production database to test database and open it to use.
    I have 'hot backup' without temporary tablespace and roll tablespace, I cant shut down production database (24x7), please give me a regulations how to recover database from hot backup, without online redo logs, temp tablespace, roll tablespace only with archive logs, and.....after this ..rename database sid.
    Every time when I recovered database, it's still want to recover...and recover from archive logs and I cant open it, it's still inconsistent.Please send me an answer for [email protected]
    thanks!

    Hi,
    What is the OS and version of Oracle?
    Do you have all the archivelogs after the hot backup? Is the backup a valid backup? Is it a RMAN backup or normal file system backup of the datafiles?
    Regards,
    Badri.

  • Time Machine Full Recovery From Wireless Backup

    I am reporting this as a learning experience for all.
    I just had a hard drive fail on my MacBook. Apple Care was golden and now I have a clean install with Leopard.
    Here is my situation. MacBook backed up via time machine on a wireless network. Windows on boot camp partition. Dedicated disk (1TB Buffalo) connected to wife's iMac via firewire.
    I want to do a full recovery. I start up leopard and it gives me the option to do a full recovery during setup. I have no time machine backup list provided. I continue with setup. When I go to the recover option of time machine I am asked to select a file. This is when I call tech support.
    Tech Support says I should have had the backup disk connected directly via firewire for setup to see it. Time machine stores the backup under these conditions as a Sparse bundle. Now that I am past setup I have to do a migration rather than a recovery. I start up the migration assistant and I still cannot access the sparse bundle as it is grayed out. The leap here is you have to mount the sparse bundle, double click, then it shows up as a disk you can migrate from.
    Windows Partition, as TS puts it is "on its own".
    The confusion for me was that I could not recover exactly as I had backed up.
    I hope this helps someone. Cheers!

    coma53 wrote:
    It seems to be. All music, photos, applications, etc. are present. I have not had time to do a complete review of my migration, I will track this post for a while and report any problems. There were significant OS updates which were required. I thought that they would be included as part of the migrate, not so. Perhaps they are on a true "full recovery" from setup, any one know?
    Migration has no option for any part of the OS. It assumes you already have it.
    If you recover your entire system from a TM backup (assuming nothing significant was excluded), you get your entire system back exactly the way it was: the OS, Apps, settings, preferences, user data, etc.
    You don't load a new OS from the Leopard Install disc -- you only use it for it's copy of Disk Utility and the installer -- everything else comes from your TM backup.

  • Oracle Restore from Online backup without any archive logs

    Hi,
    May be a dumb question. If I have a good online backup (say it took 2 hours to do that. And there is database activity while backup is going on), and lost all the archive logs happened after the online backup, is it possible at all to do the restore using that backup? complete or incomplete? and bring back the database to normal operation mode? Some details on this.
    Thanks.

    Let us see the reasoning behind this.
    Database:WORLDDB
    WORLDDB configuration:-
    TBSP_WDB
    ->TBSP_WDB_01.dbf
    ->TBSP_WDB_02.dbf
    SYSTEM
    ->SYSTEM.dbf
    USERS
    and so on for the tablespaces.
    CASE 1:-
    User managed backup.
    You issue
    ALTER TABLESPACE TBSP_WDB BEGIN BACKUP;
    DB keeps working all transactions are recorded in the redo stream, the scn information is not updated in the file header.
    Also note that the other tablespaces were been continuously worked on hence their scn numbers are a moving target.
    http://download-east.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96572/osbackups.htm#10012
    So if you begin tablespace TBSP_WDB backup at time t1 and by the time you are done with your backups you are at time t2, you will need all of the archive log's between time t1 and t2.
    CASE 2:-
    If we do with rman, rman takes care of the file header update information and goes on its merry way, those details are hidden from the end user. If one of the tablespace is fractured, updated while backups are going on , rman knows about it and will re-read the affected blocks in question.
    My thinking would be that you might need archive logs, unless it is a cold backup, with switch logfiles in between.
    If you do hot backups you need archivelogs is my thought. The number of archivelogs required will be decreased considerably through rman.
    http://download-east.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96566/rcmconc1.htm#458821
    Summary:-
    Either way archivelogs are needed.

  • Delete photos from online backup

    Hello, newbie here. My apologies. I'm having trouble understanding how to remove photos from the online backup so I don't save junk. Can someone tell me the easy way to reduce the number of photos in the online backup? Thanks.
    ~HarleyFrank

    I have the same question. It is EXTREMELY UN-user friendly. I have so far been unable to figure out how to delete the backup which I never wanted to happen in the first place. It keeps defaulting to starting a backup, even though I keep selecting in Preferences that I do not want it to backup.
    Now my online backup space is full, which I guess is why I seem to be unable to upload a small album that I DO actually want to share. There's no more room.
    Where in God's name are the instructions on how to delete the backup??!!
    i also note that there IS an option to keep files on your computer, even though you've deleted them from the backup. However I'm still searching for the info on how actually delete them online - that part seems to be missing.

  • Recovery from OKR backup problem

    I have NB Lenovo IdeaPad Z570 (from Christmas 2011).
    At 2 November 2013 I backed up the system disk using One Key Recovery.
    The size of C: partition was approx. 670 gigabytes, approximately halfway filled (photos, videos, etc.).
    Backup ran all night, but in the morning the advance was done, no error message or warning was not there. Backup size was approx. 376 gigabytes
    A few days before Christmas (at 17/12/2013 ) the hard drive failed. There were a number of bad sectors on it. Until the end of the guarantee remained approx . 2 days. Although I managed to fix hard disk using chkdsk, the number of bad sectors means that HDD is bad. I put it thus in warranty repair shop replaced. Trying to backup using OKR despite Win7 backup system failed this time, I have therefore relied on the November backup.
    However, when the NB came out repairs exchanged harddisk, I found that my OKR backup fails - reported something like "The Image file is not valid ... " . After a phone call to the call center I just learned that the original hard drive I cannot get back and that probably my backup is bad. They advised me company that provides after-sales service. But there told me that they are doing just ThinkPads, IdeaPads they only send somewhere to Poland to replace parts.
    Further investigation on the Lenovo websites I found that while OKR will make a deposit of any size , but in an earlier version is able to make the recovery only from 100 GB backup and later from 300 GB. For larger backups than 300 (in an earlier version 100) GB writes the message "The Image file is not valid ..." and refuses to continue. However, neither NB nor user manual for OKR mention about it.
    Does anyone advise me how to restore data from this backup?
    Or at least some address at Lenovo, where they advise me how to solve this problem?

       The first step for me was identifying the recovery images. The name and file extension are not as important as the file size. I did finally succeed in downloading win 8.1 core (skipping 8 tottally) AND using the built in key. It was a pain but it can be done. I finally muscled through the "huge pain / learning experience" of installing Windows 8.1, skipping 8 altogether. Below are the steps that I took and the concepts you must understand. # 1 >>  First and most  importantly, you must understand that you stand no chance of loading Windows 8.1 properly, using your built in license if you do not install it in pure EFI. So then the challendge becomes booting into a medium that is UEFI. A Windows 8.1 PE live image would have been perfect in this situation, but alas I didn't have one. I imagine  you may be able to use a Windows7 Live Disc/USb for the following steps, but I just ended up downloading a pirated & precracked version of windows 8.1 so that I could run the software to recover the key from the UEFI firmware.  ** IMPORTANT - Once again, please understand that if you do not boot up into pure UEFI (no legacy support enabled in bios), your computer will be running off of an emulated bios running between your OS and your firmware which I have come to suspect is the reason I could never get any other OS to run stable after I wiped windows completely. # 2 >> Boot into your temporary UEFI Windows and dl and run This Program to reveal your product key. Copy and paste it into text file and save it on your usb or email it to urself.  # 3 >> From this point, your mileage may vary... if you can find a clean oem installable image of 8.1, god bless your heart. Download it, burn it to disk. Make copies. Otherwise you should be able to launch the Windows 8.1 installer directly from your Live CD/USB... I'm thinkin this is the way I went. Upgrade / Installer # 4 >> Before the install gets too carried away, it asks you for your product key... copy and paste as you see fit, install takes about 20 min and you are good to go.  // I did have issues building a bootable UEFI drive at first. The key to this is to use a program like Rufus to create a your drive so that it looks like          #### NTFS PARTITION #### | ####UEFI ### | 000000 EMPTY 00000000 |Then, using your favorite martition manager software, move the UEFI partition to the end of the USB medium and expand the ntfs partition.When your done the the partitions should look like #### NTFS PARTITION ################################### | ####UEFI ### |   It should boot into UEFI at that point and I think that is where most people fail. Good luck.

  • Undo tablespace recovery from RMAN backup

    Hi,
    Lets's assume we have RMAN backup and archivelog backups, and now
    my undo tablespace's disk crashed ,how can i recover?
    Can i recover while database is up?
    Thanks,

    to recover UNDO tablespace from RMAN backup you must shutdown the database and start it in the MOUNT state to recover the missing files as follows
    rman target /
    RUN
    STARTUP MOUNT;
    ALLOCATE CHANNEL ch3 TYPE Disk;
    RESTORE datafile 'c:\u01\prod3\undo01.dbf';
    RECOVER datafile 'c:\u01\prod3\undo01.dbf';

  • Photo recovery from itunes backup

    Hi,
    Today Apple swapped out my daughters IPhone 4S (for the second time in a week) as it had a repeat of a wi-fi issue. They asked me not to restore the iTunes backup as they think that the settings of the old phone may be causing some sort of firmware issue. There lies the problem, the phone is backed up but the photos and contacts are not sync'd to my computer. Is there anyway of extracting the photos from the backup to my pc without restoring the backup to the phone.
    I have checked out a couple of extraction apps but they all want to charge me top dollar unless I just extract 1 photo or one contact at a time !!
    Thanks in advance

    Man, that MediaRECOVER worked great from a preview standpoint! I not only saw my previously deleted photos from the last "roll" but also saw additional photos as well from earlier rolls. I wish I had this a few weeks ago...
    Anyway, I haven't purchased it yet as I am in process of erase and installing OSX on my laptop again. I may have been able to get the photos from the a target disk mode data pull onto my older mac, but if that didn't work I'll simply use my latest backup file to restore all of my lost photos and use MediaRECOVER to get the photos that I added after the last backup.
    Thanks!!!
    PS - For anyone considering using this, make sure you have a media card reader to create a disk image of the flash memory, and don't take any more pictures using that memory until you use MediaRECOVER. The next pictures you take will replace the "deleted" images if you do this.

    Any Ideas ?

    Hi,
    as for all liveCache issues, I'd have to ask you too to open an OSS message on queue BC-DB-LVC.
    A thing you could try:
    try to read using 'dd' from your devices. If 'dd' can't read from the devspaces, then you've got a misconfiguration somewhere, i.e. an operating system issue and not a liveCache issue. In that case, we (BC-DB-LVC) wouldn't be responsible for the error.
    The 'dd' command could look like:
    dd if=/dev/vx/rdsk/azdevdg/lvlzddisk1 of=<filename> <blocksize>

  • Recovery from corrupted backup

    Hi i am new to oracle.
    i am working from basics and aspire to learn more.
    i have created a new tablespace as follows.
    create tablespace college datafile 'f:\oracle\oradata\data1\data1.dbf' size 10m;
    made a hot backup of it as
    alter tablespace college begin backup;
    sql> host
    c:\ copy f:\oracle\oradata\data1\data1.dbf h:\hot\data1.dbf
    other than one hot backup, i dont have any other backup of it.
    but unfortunately, the backup has been also corrupted.
    is there any way to restore / recover that tablespace?

  • Recovery from FileVault backup disk

    I have a friend who had Filevault active and suspected it was causing problems so he disabled it following the instructions to the letter. After working for over an hour, it said it was done and when he restarted it would not boot. He took it to the local Apple store for "recovery" but it appears that all that was done was to erase the drive and reinstall the OS. He has a Lacie drive that he kept a backup on but it appears not to have a user folder for his account. Is it encrypted and therefore invisible? If so, what can be done to recover the data?
    G5 2.0 DP, MacBook Pro 17   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Boot from the LaCie, assuming that his backup is bootable. that should allow the user's folder to decrypt. Once that's finished, then drag & drop the user's folder onto the Mac Book's User folder. Finally, do a search for file vault or filevault, review the postings, and decide whether or not to ever reenable it.
