Recovery HD not working, kernel_task 100%

Hello! I have run into a major problem with my iMac and I have no idea what is going on. Help would be greatly appreciated!
The inital problem: I was using my iMac last night, mainly surfing with Safari but with several other applications open in the background (Photoshop, at least ten Safari tabs, Mail, Evernote, iTunes, Spotify, possibly a few others). Suddenly, while reading on a forum, I could no longer scroll the page with my Magic Mouse. In fact, nothing responded at all, no clicks, no keyboard presses (wired, Apple Extended keyboard), no nothing. A minute later, the pointer froze too. I shut down with the power button and restarted.
The first time, the Mac booted into my BootCamp partition. Possibly, I had made that change myself earlier and forgotten about it. Windows 7 started without a fuss, and I then rebooted into OS X.
However, OS X would not load. For over half an hour, only the grey apple and the spinning wheel. Finally, I gave up and tried to boot into the Recovery drive. After a long, long period of waiting, I finally got to the "Welcome" screen where you choose your language. However, neither keyboard nor mouse responded to input. I restarted again, this time trying Safe boot. I got past the grey progress bar, but then it halted again. Tried again, booting into the original System disk (10.5.6), which worked after a long, long time. When at the Welcome screen, the mouse did not work, but I could choose with the keyboard. After choosing, the mouse came alive. I ran Disk Utility, which reported no errors. Set Startup disk to my main partition and restarted. This time (after a long, long time of waiting), I actually came to the login screen on my boot volume. Mouse and keyboard did not respond initially, but came alive after 5-10 minutes. I could then log in. I actually managed to work for a few minutes, saving two recovered PS documents and starting Activity Monitor, before everything beachballed and I had to power down again.
I have now tried this several times. I can only get in to my OS X partition by booting to my DVD, and then choosing the 10.8.2 partition as the Startup drive. I see the same unresponsive mouse/keyboard every time at login or welcome screens. When I get into my 10.8.2 system, I can see in Activity monitor that kernel_task uses 100-110% of processor time, and often another process takes all the rest (mds, CrashReport). Once, I actually managed to quit all my running applications and do a restart from the menu, but it then hanged up on me on the grey "shut-down" screen.
Meanwhile, my Win 7 partition still works like a charm.
Any ideas about what I should do? Should I just give up and restore from Time Machine already? What could be causing the problems with the mouse and keyboard? Why is kernel_task using so much processor time?

I'm sure when Linc responds he'll have a "Real" way to fix your problem but the other day I was having a Kernal_Task run away on my MBA and after running every possibility on ONYX it seems resolved.

Had the C partition been split/shrunk to form a new partition previously?
Does disk management show the HDD as basic or dynamic? (Start>Right-click Computer>Manage>disk management on the left).
If it has been switched to dynamic (Windows does this automatically when more than 4 partitions are present on the disk), then the F11 recovery partition won't function until it is restored to basic, but I would like to confirm that is the scenario before providing those steps.
The Disk management shows that my HDD as Dynamic, what should i do then if this is the case and the possible solution to my problem?
please help me & Thank you for your time,

If you have more than 4 partitions you will need to delete the extra partition/partitions, then convert the hdd back to Basic.

  • SCCM 2012 Primary Site Recovery - Packages not working

I recently had to recover my Primary Site due to system crashes with blue screens on a daily basis. I was running ConfigMgr 2012 SP CU 3 and as part of the process I migrated from WS2008 R2 to WS2012 R2.
After many hours of perusing the web, I found the solutions to deal with the common site recovery issues such as SSL certs, and the content validation due to an empty ContentLib folder. I also had the issue with the update source where it listed the old
WSUS 3.2 server and the new one so the Site GUID was also updated.
The issue I am currently experiencing is that packages new or old including software update packages are not working. When using the script by Peter VanWoulde it lists the Deployment State as Error. I have tried redistributing them, valdiating the content,
removing distribution points, adding in new distribution points and even recreating some of the smaller packages to test but nothing is working.
Application deployments are working without issues.

At this point I am running out of ideas of where to look.

    Hi Xin,
Sorry for not responding earlier but I did recover the site using the guidelines in the following article Backup and Recovery in Configuration Manager,
however there were a few issues.
I did not have a ContentLib backup so all the content had to be redistributed and validated before that worked. None of my packages new or old would work. I eventually found an article from a forum member who also initiated a Site Reset as part of their
recovery process and had no issues.
So it seems that any packages are still not working and i think I narrowed it down.
For some reason even though my DP and MP are all set for HTTPS, it is trying to access the HTTP path for SMS_DP_SMSPKG$. I am using PKI certs so this is the correct path but it should be HTTPS.

  • Windows 8 Recovery Disc not working

    Hi everbody,
    I have purchased a Lenovo Thinkpad T430.
This laptop came with pre-installed Windows 7 Pro.
However I want to use Windows 8 which I have a recovery disc for.
I built in a SSD instead of the optical drive. So I don´t have a optical drive.
On this SSD I want to run my OS.
With a software from Samsung (manufacturer of my SSD) I was able to copy the Windows7 OS on my SSD.
As I mentioned above I bought a laptop with installed windows 7 pro and a Windows 8 upgrade disc.
Therefore I got the "Operating System Recovery Dis Windows 8 Pro. (OEM Activation 3.0 Required)".
The problem now is that I have an upgrade disc but no optical drive.
So I created an image of the upgrade disc and with this image I have created a bootable USB stick with the following program:
    http://www.chip.de/downloads/UNetbootin_34673960.html
When I boot my laptop using the bootable USB stick everything seems to be working until to the point where I have to accept the EULA.
So I chose a  language, and clicked on "I accept the agreements".
When I want to click on "next" I got a error message "recovery failed".
Please have a look on the following picture taken with my smartphone.
The language used in this picture is german as i live in Austria.
    Link to image
Do you know how I can upgrade to Windows 8?
Can you tell me why the upgrade disc is not working?
    Best Regards,

Dear Phisto, from your description i cannot tell you anything more about the disk apart from the obvious, that it seems to be incomplete without the other 11 disks of the set. Did you buy this disk from Lenovo, from Microsoft, or is it something that came from unofficial channels? If it is the latter maybe you should not try to install it...
Now for cloning the SSD back to your HDD. The software that came with your Samsund should be able to do that as well. If not, then if your HDD is a Western Digital you can download and use Acronis WD edition from WD's site, it's free and will do the cloning. Otherwise you should use a free tool, Clonezilla is one of them and of course there are more.
As for the location of your various drives, I would suggest to keep things really really basic if you want to troubleshoot effectively, so the best thing would be to return the system to a "factory" condition, of course with the SSD in place of the HDD. You don't know which parameter is causing you trouble at this point. So, of course it would be easier to use an external DVD drive (and you should try it!), butif it fails as well you should try also the other approach.
    I hope you solve this.

  • EFS Recovery Agent not working on Windows 8.1

I know EFS data recovery has been discussed so many times in the forums but I could not find anything useful in the other threads as I believe I have followed all the required steps but still cannot get EFS recovery agent to work.
    I have a Client1 (Win 8.1) and a DC1 (Windows Server 2012 R2) under beta.com domain.
DC1 is a CA server as well as a domain controller.
    I logged into DC1 as beta.com\Administrator
which is the Domain Administrator account.
I duplicated the EFS Recovery Agent template on the
DC1 and published it into Active Directory.
Then I edited the Default Domain Policy GPO and under
    Computer Settings\Policies\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Public Key Policies
I right clicked Encrypting File System and selected Create a Data Recovery Agent
and a new file recovery certificate was generated for the Administrator account.
I exported the newly-created Recovery Agent certificate and then logged into
    Client1 as beta.com\Administrator and imported
    it.
I then logged off from Client1 and logged back in using a different account beta.com\johns
and encrypted a folder (with a text file inside) using EFS. (The folder address on local disk is
    C:\Reports)
Then I logged back into Client1 again using beta.com\Administrator
but I am unable to open the file inside the folder and I get an
    Access is denied message.
It is very strange to get an "Access is denied" message because on the text file when I right click and click Properties -> Advanced -> Details, under the Recovery Certificates, the Administrator account's certificate is listed
and its thumbprint corresponds to the same recovery certificate which I created in step 3. But I am still unable to access the file.
Do you have any idea why? Am I missing something?
    Thanks in advance.
    MCT, MCSA/MCSE Security
    http://esitech.spaces.live.com/

    Hi
The Client1 user needs to enrol via GPO to get the recovery certificate normally via automatic enrolment
Check the Personal Certificate store for Client1
I think the policy needs to be applied before you encrypt any data
    To manually recover
Did you export the Private key when you did the export ?
Did you export to a .cer file

  • Recovery did not work with new hard drive

The original Toshiba HD(250G, sata1) of my laptop( ) crashed.
I bought new one (320G, sata 2, Western digit )

After cd1 and cd2 finish installing it ask to take it out then restart, I do so, but when it comes to setup setting of windows.
An error message come out says " Windows Setup could not configure Windows on this computer’s hardware”
It restart and says again " Windows could not complete the installation. To install Windows on theis compuiter, restart the installation."

  • I have compaq cq50. was VISTA upgraded to WIN 7. Recovery disks not working. BOOTMGR compressed

will not boot up.  I have 2 recovery disks, the 1 of 2 will take but 2 of 2 disk doesnt run.

    Hi:
If you are trying to use the Vista recovery disks and they are not working, and you can read your Vista product key on the bottom of your notebook, then you can make your own Vista installation disk by reading the guidance below.
If you're up to a slight but rewarding challenge you can make your own if you can read your 25 character Vista product key on the PC.
Just download the 3 files you need at the link below, and read all of the instructions to create a bootable DVD installation disk using imageburn.
Disregard the part of the text under the first screen shot about "extract the files to the Vista folder."
The files were already extracted to that folder when you ran the X14.exe file by reading the text on top of the first screen shot.
The other thing I noticed is on the 4th screen shot, where it shows Developer ID Microsoft Corporation. I had to type Microsoft Corporation in myself, and then the other codes automatically populated.
When I went to compile the ISO file, ImageBurn gave a message that about a WIM file and ISO, and if I wanted to burn it in a different format.
I selected No, make the ISO file.
It was not that hard to do. I burned both the 64 bit disk and the 32 bit disk in case I ever need them.
I tested both of them an my hp dc7100 CMT desktop PC, they worked perfectly.
When you enter the product key, it knows what version of Vista you have.
    http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/software-os/w/microsoft_os/3317.2-3-microsoft-windows-v....
After you successfully install Vista, you can then install the drivers from your PC's support and driver page.

  • Recovery disks not working

I have an HP G60 Notebook PC, Product # NW144UA#ABA
The computer got a virus and couldnt open Microsoft Office applications so I wanted to restore it to the original factory settings. I created my own set of recovery disks (used 3 DVD-Rs). I started the recovery manager and followed the steps, the first disk worked just fine then popped out and asked for the second. I tried to put in the second disk (correctly labeled from when it was made) and it said the disk is not good, please insert disk #2. I have tried this several times and same thing. Now I can't even get back to the regular computer. When I turn it off or cancel the recovery manager it comes up with a black screen saying BootMGR not working (or something.. cant remember exact words). At one point in trying the recovery manager I got an "error 1002 please contact HP" message. I have tried to keep inserting disk #2 and after 20 times it still wouldnt work. I have tried to call HP customer service and was told I could buy recovery disks, but shouldn't my disks work? Please help!!!

    Hi:
Sometimes the recovery disks don't work that you make for one reason or another.
Unfortunately, there are hundreds of posts like yours and unfortunately, very few answers.  I have yet been able to help someone get their recovery disks to work.
So, I see that you may have two options (only one if you can't read all 25 characters of the Vista product key on the bottom of your PC:
    1. Order a set of HP recovery disks and hope they work.
    2. Make your own plain windows vista installation media if you can read your vista product key.
This will NOT restore your PC to factory condition. It will only install the operating system, and you will need to either have your program installation files and also use whatever downloads and drivers are available from your notebook's support and driver page.
Start from page 289 at the link below.

  • Envy touchsmart 17 recovery discs not working?

I just got my laptop its A HP Envy touchsmart 17 model:17-j043cl.
I made recovery discs right away because I also bought A Samsung EVO SSD 250 gig HD to replace the slow 1TB 5200rpm HD my laptop came with. Everything went good with making the recovery discs and it took 6 blank sony dvd-r to compleat using the HP included software(only lets you make 1 set or copy).
Now I do all the nessarry HP updates and OS updates.
I power down my new laptop, remove factory HD intall new Samsung SSD 250 gig HD in its place. power up the laptop and try to use recovery discs to load onto the new samsung SSD drive........Well NO LUCK, I get an error screen saying:
"The system recovery media does not support this compiter. You are not able to restore this system with the media"
So I do alot of searching I find that many others have had this same problem, and they resolved it by reverting back to previous BIOS, I know my BIOS was updated to f.43 after i made discs, how can I go back to what it was before the update to see if the recovery discs will work?
    or is there another solution??

    Hi Rizzo7883,

    Pre-boot execution Environment (PXE) v2.1
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
    PXE-M0F: Exiting PXE ROM
    Operating System not found
I can see the new HDD in the BIOS, I've changed the boot order to start with CD/DVD drive but still get the message above.
    What now?
Thanks for any help that I can get.

I want to say thanks to all who helped. The problem with recovery CD's not working was the DVD drive.
I was able to get a used DVD drive really cheap and was able to reinstall to factory condition.
Just for kicks once the install and all updates were completed I stuck the old DVD drive back in and still didn't work. So other than alot of time online and looking around for a DVD drive that would fit the laptop, I spent less than $10 for DVD drive and $65 for another hard drive which is good news, the bad news is my wife couldn't live anylonger without Facebook and bought another laptop, HP this time.
Well my daughter will have a Tosh to do her school projects.
Now to figure out what caused the crash, loss of data and DVD not to work in the first place.
Thanks again for all your help.
    Happy New Year

    Hi @Ajlk ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read  about your HP ENVY 15 Notebook and having issues with the startup stuck on HP Logo. You could reset the BIOS with this document selecting the reloading the BIOS default settings.
Please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices, as these could cause some issues.
Here is a link on computer does not start, which has a section for the HP Logo screen. Most times this is an issue with something you have just installed.
    Hope this helps you.
    Thanks.
