Recovery Media Vs Rescue & Recovery

Hi I,m just enterend in the thinkpad world buyng a brand new  edge 15'' 319 - 49G
I would like to understand what's the difference from the Recovery Media and Rescue & Recovery.
I've just lunched Recovery Media and it produced 4 dvd disks: is it a disk set to resume the original factory installation?
then I lunched the Rescue & Recovery and it produced a "backup" on the internal drive (but where?): do it is good to resume the actual sytem and applications situation?
Am I right?
or I've understand it wrong and Recovery Media Vs Rescue & Recovery does the same thing?

If you are running RNR 4.5, read my post from Nov 22,2011, incremental backups revert to local.(you will have to update a entry in windows task scheduler).
You need to develop a Disaster recovery plan.  In my case, I have a  second HDD (internal). I back up to it every Sunday,
and every 3 months I backup to cd/DVD in case second HDD goes up in smoke.   I have no backups on my C drive(local).
If you have an external HDD, via USB, you can use that as your backup storage area. I would delete the backup on C,
change backup location to USB, then start backing up.  First backup is a FULL  C drive, the next ones are just incremental backups. Set max incrementals to 32.  There are problems with the MERGE process(fail code=584, not enough space for the merge...bug in rnr).
On advanced menu, look on top tabs for Advanced . It allows you to copy Local backups to an external device.
Unless you really love your current backup, dont waste time copying.  Just start it all on the USB.

  • Use "Factory recovery disks" or "Rescue & recovery"?

I'll be upgrading my T520 from Windows 7 to Windows 8 (clean install) and want to create a full, restorable backup of my system first.
I'm confused about just which method to go with.  In Control panel, there is a "Lenovo-Factory recovery disks".  And then there is also Rescue & Recovery, which I just installed.
From the online instructions, it looks like with R&R, I can select either the OS and/or Data.  If I select OS, is this the same as running the Control panel item, Factory recovery disks??
I will probably create the OS backup media separate from the Data media anyway, since I want to copy the data over to my clean install of Windows 8.
    Thanks!

The Recovery Disks are a must have do burn them to DVD's (3 - DVD are burnt). These 3 DVD allow you to reinstall the the Windows 7, tools drivers etc to the state it came from the factory. It becomes clean start as you originally got it. They maybe also used to boot into for the repair console but I am not certain as I haven't tried it myself.
Now having said that which should be clear. You want an IMAGE of the DRIVE which includes 3 partitions. One is no good since Lenovo boots via Rapidstart via "System_Drv" partition. If you look in Disk Management you'll see that is the active boot partition. You need it and the Windows partitions a minimum. But that leave the Q drive omitted.
Few people take into account that even though they have a backup of the HD they DON'T have the means to read it to put it back. Its fine if you just going to over write a working system from the backup but not it the application or tools are missing. Acronis Trueimage is OS independent and allow for a Boot CD to be made for those situation in which you can restore a HD, a partition or even folder and files from the same backup. This is what you'd want or something equivalent and 100% that you'll have access to it afterwards. I doubt you'd be able to easily do all this will R&R  and there is no way to verify that in advance. Many time the backup is no good and you're SOL. Trueimage can verify the image file created that its good if you which so you know. You can create as many images as you wish over time and typically place on an external drive. Do so via the eSATA port is very fast while USB works but slower.
I trust this will have answered and/or enlightened you plan. Bottom line at the end of it all. You want to be 200% sure how to do the image restore from a unbootable HD. If you can't then the damm R&R is false security and useless tool. I don't use and don't trust it period. Some people sure have rebuilt an SSD with it but that's no the same thing or as easy.
You may want to read some of the Window 8 pre threads since you're be installing over Windows 7 as the upgrade requires.
    Good luck.
PS: You are smart to ask now rather than like many after they've destroyed the original software and no clue how to recover and go back. Expect stuff not to work as it does under Win7 Lenovo has a lot to catch up on for their tools and drivers before its solid packages. That's my opinion.
You could buy another HD and just swap it and do a clean install but would likely require a retail Windows 8. There does not seem to be a way to install it yet without the Windows 7 being available for verification before the upgrade DVD will install. Then its as drive swap to go back again.

  • Yoga 13 doesn't have an option to create recovery media in onekey recovery

    Hi All,
I am prepping a new Lenovo Yoga 13 for a user.  I want to create recovery DVD(s) for the new system with the OneKey Recovery software.  When I open the application there is no option to create media.  There are only a backup option and a restore option.  I called tech support and they advised if I attach a DVD drive the option to create media will appear.  I did this but no luck.....  I am attaching first a picture of what I see when I open One Key Recovery
And secondly to show that I do have a usb DVD connected here is a picture of the DVD attached with a blank DVD inside it.
I have downloaded the lastest update to the One Key Utility and am running version:  8.0.0.1519.  Can anyone give any insight as to why the create recovery media isn't there for me?.....

I found the answer to my own question.  Essentially in version 8 there is no way to create recovery media with this utility.  I came across the following link which I am going to try:

  • Lenovo Recovery Media not showing recovery media

My T430 has an issue with creating Product Recovery discs. It doesn't give me any options for recovery media. The drop down meny is totally empty. Clicking "update" does nothing. I have updated the software, and rebooted several times, no success. I have a portable USB drive, which I'm going to use as a recovery media.
The issue is the same with Lenovo Solution Center and ThinkVantage Tools.
Any ideas what might cause this problem?
    Thank you and regards,

definitely create the recovery media on dvds. then you should be able to recreate the factory-delivered os onto whatever drive, hdd or ssd, compatible/installable with your laptop.
how you make a backup, and what's included in it, can be accomplished by any number of applications, including Windows' own internal utility. what you choose is largely a matter of personal preference.
    regards.

  • How to create recovery media from HDD recovery image?

When I tried to recover a fresh Windows from HDD recovery my little son stopped the proccedure by accident.
When I tried to restart I get the message bootmgr is missing. I have a copy from HDD recovery file but din not create a recover DVD.
The question is if I can make a bootable recover DVD or USB file file from the HDD recovey file?
    Thanks!!!

There is a method to create bootable USB stick from recovery DVDs or ISO file - http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD4103KB0000R01.htm but I dont think this will help you.
Problem is that such back-up is actually useless. There is also option to order original recovery installation disc. You can order it on https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx

  • Rescue & Recovery lists no backups on Iomega USB eGO disk

    Hi,
I have been using an Iomega eGO external USB drive for backups.
I have been able to list and remove backups (when required) when in Windows 7 and running Rescue & Recovery, but I am unable to get a list of backups when booting from a Recovery DVD into Rescue & Recovery.
Basically I am replacing the unencrypted hard drive with an SSD that supports encryption.
The aim was to use a full backup made immediately prior to removing the HDD to restore the full system.
When booting from the recovery DVD, the Rescue & Recovery utility doesn't list any backups, even when the tick box for listing backups for other systems is checked.
It makes no difference whether selecting ALL locations or External USB Drive.
    Any ideas?
Backups aren't much good if you can't retrieve them.
If my old disk had failed then I'd be in a worse state than this. I can't say that I'm impressed.

    Hello and welcome,
Has R&R been updated since you made your bootable DVD?  It's possible there's a version mismatch between your backups and your R&R DVD.
You might try burning a new rescue CD - or whatever it's called on your machine, "bootable media" maybe.  That may be able to find your backups.

  • What is difference between "Product Recovery Media" and "Recovery Media"?

Both of the above are options in my ThinkVantage Folder. I asked Lenovo (Atlanta?) and uhm...they did not know either.
....And will either option give me the option of doing a clean Vista Ultimate install minus bloatware?

    Got it - thanks.
For such a critical function one would think they would make that a tad more clear.  You can also click on the Lenovo Partition. It will prompt you to create Recovery Media there as well. The contents of which match neither the Product Recovery Media nor the Recovery Media.

  • Question about Recovery Media Creator

Hello everyone, first of all, I don't know if this question should be in this catergory, but I thought this would be the best to post in.
My question is about the Recovery Media Creator procces. I was about to create the recovery DVD and I noticed there are several Recovery Media options (Recovery Media 1 to Recovery Media 3).
My question is, what are the differences between them? Does it matter if I only check one of them so I would need less DVD's or a smaller USB?
    Thanks in advance.
PS. excuse my grammar or bad explanation if there is any mistake.

Using Toshiba recovery media creator recovery image saved on HDD will be copied on DVDs or USB media and it will be created as bootable media.
How many discs must be used depends on recovery image. For some notebooks 2 discs are needed and for some of them you need 3 discs.
The tool gives you also info which medias you can use and suggest you, for instance which USB device you need. For my U940 is 16 GB USB listed as suggested due to 9,2 GB recovery image.

  • Copying Recovery Media (Herstelmedia) created with HP recovery manager

I've lately created 'Recovery Media' using HP recovery manager. The back-up is stored on a USB, but I want to copy the back-up to another USB in order to use the first USB again. Is it possible to easily move the back-up from an USB to another? Thanks!

    Hi @CasparQ ,
    Thank you for your query.
As you are allowed to only create one set of  recovery material, I do not think that you will be able to copy to another USB stick.
To verify this I suggest contacting HP support for confirmation.

  • ThinkPad Twist s230u and ThinkPad x201 Tablet Creating Recovery Media

    Hi Lenovo Customer Support,
    ThinkPad s230u( model number: 3347CTO) - Window 8 Pro.
Before I start using my Laptop, I want to create a Recovery Media as is shown when installed with all partitions. Meaning if I format all contents of Laptop I want a recovery Media brings back computer as I go it in the first place include all partitions. By default there are five hidden partition and one ntfs.
What is the procedure how to Create a Recovery Media? I heard only Flash Recovery exist for Window 8.
Also I have Window 8 Pro but when I tried this link procedure http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/Create-Win-8-recovery-media-in-ThinkPad-Thi... I saw only Window 8 option and even then it reboot and did not work.
Also I did Flash Recovery and Took Faster with USB 3.0 Flash around 10 min around 16GB Space
Is it possible to do CD Recovery too ?
    ThinkPad x201 Tablet(Model Number: 30933PG) - Wundow 7 Pro
Can you do Flash Recovery Media and CD Recovery Media under Window 7 Pro  Enviro.
If you upgrade Hard drive to 1T and RAM to 16 G RAM  , Can you Still do the Recovery Media?
What is the Procedure to successfully create Recovery Media.
    Thanks.
    saad

    Reasons am asking this questions:
Sometime you test your computer doing a lot of things learning new technologies etc and suddenly you decide ok I want to take it back to factory state. Until now, most Thinkpad laptop does not come with recovery media. So how can I assure that my Recovery Media includes everything I used to have when I first receive unit.
I want to learn how to do that by myself by learning from the experts.
Until now what I know as follow:
    ThinkPad x201:
I tried recovery media  3 DVD only with original hard drive works. I did not try Flash and not sure there is option yet.
If I upgrade unit with 1T hard drive and 16G Ram, How can I do Recovery Media?
    ThinkPad Twist s230u:
I tried Flash and followed procedure on link in previous post. I took me less than 15 min to recovery whole. The question is does this process recover all the parts that is included when I receive unit.
I was unable to do recovery since I am not sure when in the Flash and during process showed to choose operating system was only Window 8 option not Window 8 Pro which came with unit.
I was able to do reset within system took longer and worked.
Is the recovery part build-in in the hardware or software partition? Is it included in the recovery Flash with all partitions?
Thank You. Awaiting for anyone to reply.

  • Cannot get recovery media

    Hi Guys,
I'm look for Recovery media to create recovery disc of my girlfriend. I checked and the hidden partition hasn't been erased. However pressing 0 or F12 on startup doesn't provide me with the restore option, which probably means that the boot program has been erased (new installation? I'm not sure). Recovery disc creator has been removed from the system as far as I can tell.
I've been trying to download recovery media from this site:
    https://support.toshiba.com/repair
But when I enter Serial Number (89259938K) I get the following error:
Please verify you entered the correct serial number, and that your PC was sold in the eligible region.
Could you advise me on what should I do to get the recovery media?
    My laptop make:
    Toshiba Satellita l500-12
    Bought in Poland/Europe
    thanks,
    Marcin

This site is for U.S. models only, Marcin, so they wouldn't have a record of your machine.  You need to contact Toshiba-Poland.  Good Luck!

  • Keep getting errors during recovery from recovery media?

My hard drive failed on my L655-S5065 Laptop.
I replace the Hard Drive, Purchased the Toshiba Recovery Media and updated the BIOS.
The first disc of the media loads fine.  The second disc runs for about 20 minuntes then kicks back the error code (0A-0543-0000).  After the first failed recovery I used the "erase hard drive" option on the recovery media, tried the recovery again and same error code?
    Thanks for the help, Steve

I'd suggest contacting support and telling them what happens. It's possible that there's a problem with the discs, and if it hasn't been too long since you purchased them, maybe you can get another set. However, I don't know what the policy is regarding that.

  • Won't boot from Toshiba Recovery Media; Will boot from Win 8 builder DVD

    Satellite L855-S5309, Windows 8, 64-bit
Created 2 sets of Windows 8 Recovery Media using Toshiba Recovery Media Creator.  First set a year ago, created a new set yesterday.
The laptop will not boot to either set (DVD 1).   The DVD is bootable in another machine.  EUFI is grayed out.
Tried a Windows 8 DVD store bought.  It booted from this DVD.
The big question:  Why won't the Toshiba laptop see its own DVD it created for recovery?
Win 8 Repair DVD - boots from USB drive but won't see DVD files on drive.  Is this the image?
Do I need to order the recovery media?

It also states Recovery Partition has been removed, but there is a Recovery (D drive showing with 2.14GB free of 19.6 GB
The recovery partition, when clicked on is empty, even after making hidden files show.
