Recovery of files , drive missing, yet backups successful using GPT disk 4TB USB backup destination

I have an HP ML310e G8 v2 server with 4x1TB drives in RAID 5. I created 2 logical drives in the array. Disk0 (C:\) is 250GB and has the Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials OS installed formatted NTFS with MBR. Drive1 (E:\) is 2.5TB formatted NTFS with GPT
this drive is used for the server shares and other client data.
I am using Azure Online backup to protect the critical client data.
Local backup - I am also using Windows Server Backup to perform a full system, bare metal backup. This backup writes to a 4TB western digital  USB 3 drive, formatted NTFS and using GPT.
The Problem is when I attempted to perform a test recovery of a file from the local backup using Windows Server Backup. I am able to browse files to recover on the C:\ but the E:\ does not appear as a location to perform a recovery from. Yet the WBS configuration
indicates that backups have been running successfully and that the backup size corresponds to the proper data size for the full server (approximately 600GB).
Does anyone know why the E:\ does not appear as a drive to browse and recover files from?
From the reading I did I "thought" that the >2TB and 4k sector size problems from Windows Server Backup on 2008 had been fixed in 2012R2. Maybe my problem is not related to this but I can't think of any other possible problem.

Hi MZ,
Based on your description, I’m a little confused with this issue. You describe “I am able to browse files
to recover on the C:\ but the E:\ does not appear as a location to perform a recovery from.” Would you please provide a screenshot? It may help me to understand that which step you failed to recover. (Please hide all private and protected information.)
Meanwhile, would you please open WindowsImageBackup folder and navigate to that backup file (VHDX file). Please
mount it, and assign a drive letter to it in Disk Management. Then please check if you can find all files.
Hope this helps.
Best regards,
Justin Gu

is snow leopard usb backup drive access much much quicker using firewire than with usb 2.0 ?

I migrated from a USB2 external hard drive (when it failed) to the Firewire 800 and have not looked back.  I also sync from that primary drive to a secondary backup drive (still USB2).  Everything I do with the firewire drive is significantly faster than USB2.

    Hi,
If you want to reset or refresh your Windows, then I'd like to share this link with you:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-IN/windows-8/restore-refresh-reset-pc
the reason why I share it with you is that the reset and refresh situations are different depending on the system installed in your machine.
if the system does have a recovery partition, then it might be corrupted, I'm afraid that you eill need to contact the PC manufactiure for a DVD disk.
By the way, Windows 8\8.1 also has some built-in advanced recovery options, you can boot your PC into recovery console to perform some troubleshooting steps.

  • Info.plist, Manifest.mbdb, Manifest.plist, Status.plist files are missing in backup folder

I restored my iphone 5 to the default setting.
Before restoring, I backed up the data in iphone but backup files have been corrupted.
I found that Info.plist, Manifest.mbdb, Manifest.plist, Status.plist files are missing in the folder where the back up files are located.
    (C:\user\user name\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup)
I copied these files from another backup in the folder of the corrupted backup, but it did not work on either itunes or third party software.
I even opened each of 4 files and modified the date, but still does not work.
I know I can change extension of each file in the corrupted backup folder, but there are more than 8000 files in that folder.
Is there any way to create the 4 files for the corrupted backup file?

  • Using Time Machine to restore to new hard drive missing recent backups

On Mac Book Pro 2009 with OS X 10.5.8.
I have been backing up to Time Machine on an external drive since 2009. A few month ago I upgrade to OS X 10.9 Mavericks.
Trying to install a new hard drive and restoring from Time Machine. Just before installing the hard drive I again backed up to Time Machine.
Trying to restore from Time Machine.
Note: this link shows the screen I am on. It isn't from my computer. Just showing for display purpose.

"Select a backup. Select the Time Machine backup you want to restore. Only complete backups of Mac OS X appear in the list"
The problem is, the most recent "complete" restore point in the list is August 2011 (OS X 10.5.8). How can that be? Over the years I have checked Time Machine and I have back ups way past 2011.
    What should I do?
    Thanks

So I just purchased an internal drive (separate from my system drive) to use as a Time Machine drive, for both of my computers (only one partition). Since they will be backing up every day, I will retain much more recent material in case of drive failure.
Let Time Machine back up every hour, as it's designed. That will protect you best.
My question is this - if I have a drive failure on my current internal system drive, and the internal Time Machine is intact, is it possible for me to take my external bootable backup (say 3 weeks older than Time Machine in how recently it was backed up), make a cone of that on a new internal system drive, and then use Time Machine to restore that drive to what is most current on Time Machine?
    Does this question make sense?
The question makes sense until you realize that Time Machine backups contain everything you need (unless you do something silly, like exclude your system files).
Once the new drive is installed and formatted, you can restore your entire system from the TM backups faster than you can copy the clone to the new internal HD. See #14 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum. Note that you use the Snow Leopard Install disc only for the Installer on it; you don't install OSX from it.

  • Can I use a Time Machine Backup (on an external drive) as a "start up" drive?  I need to do a disk repair.

I am upgrading my MacBook Pro (17"; Intel Core Duo; Speed 2.16 GHz; 2 GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM) from Leopard (10.5.8) to Snow Leopard (10.6.8).  I successfully Time Machine to make a backup to an external LaCie drive.  Some issues appeared when I ran a "disk verify," and need to change the startup drive to boot up and use "repair disk."  When I tried to change the startup drive (in System Preferences) the drive with the Time Machine Backup was not recognized.  Can I even use Time Machine to create a bootable drive?  I use Carbon Copy Clone with my iMac (and can boot from the clone), but that is not an option when running OSX 10.5.8.

Only if the backup was created by Mac OS X 10.8 or newer. Use the Mac OS X 10.6 install DVD instead.

  • I want to use time machine to backup two 4 TB drives, one USB and the other thunder bolt  to 2 4TB USB drives

I have a 2012 iMac running Mavericks, booting off of a external 4TB thunderbolt drive and using a separate 4TB USB drive for my pictures. I want to back up each of the drives to two USB 4TB  drives with Time Machine. I cannot seem to figure out how to have multiple sources with multiple destinations.

    Hello Randy,
Try excluding the drive in Time Machine settings. Take a look at the article below to go through and remove the exclusion of the external drive so that can be backed up as well.

  • Can't create a recovery drive: "Some required files are missing"

    Hi guys,
Didn't have much luck in MS forums, maybe somebody here knows?
Whenever I try to create a recovery drive I find that "We can't create a recovery drive on this PC. Some required files are missing. To troubleshoot problems when your PC can't start, use your Windows installation disc or media."
    Uh?
Is a fresh Windows 8 x64 (RTM) installation. Only thing that I can think of is it has UEFI and Secure Boot enabled.
If I helped you, please give me some kudos! ^^

    Hey there dann,
What version of Windows 8 are you using? It appears you may need to the Window 8 disc to be able to create the recovery drive because it needs files that are not on your system. I found those part numbers for the Windows 8 recovery media for you.
    04T7196 - Win 8 64 Bit US
    04T7223 - Win 8 Pro 64 Bit US
Additional part numbers can be found here for all system parts and recovery media for you the Twist (s230u). If you contact service back they should be able to get the media sent to you. Good Luck.

unable to make recovery disk on in pavellion g62016 .dat file is missing in recovery drive
can i use the .dat file of another same notebook
what is significance of ,dat file

Hello shail11. I understand that you're having some problems creating a recovery disc. Is this correct?
You can not use another .dat file.  The recovery media is specific to a certain notebook, so using another computer's files will not work.   If you're running into issues making a recovery media you could attempt to perform the recovery from the BIOS. Here is a document which outlines the process.  ALL data not backed up before performing the recovery will be lost.
Let me know if this helps; have a great weekend!

  • Time machine tried to clear my hard drive and I chose "NO" yet hard drive is now showing no files but shows space is still used?

yesterday morning I was working and a window randomly popped up for time machine. I don't have the exact wording that was on the pop up window because I assumed it wasn't spam as it was asking me to choose a place to store my time machine backup. I've never seen this window before but just a couple week ago I was having storage problems and hae tried to fix them by clearing some files. So I assumed this window was about helping clear some space on the computer. So I chose my silver hard drive to use for the backup for time machine. 20 min later I get another pop up that is asking me if I'm sure I want to choose my silver hard drive as it will erase anything that is currently on the drive - I immediately panicked and chose "NO" for it to not use the hard drive. I assumed I was in the clear at this point. But I didn't check the drive until later yestsrday evening and now the folder is empty when I open the drive. Yet when I check the space available on the drive it shows over 400G that's taken and 600+G that's available which means the files I had on there are still there but I can't see them? Where have they gone? And was this time machine pop up window spam? I opened my time machine and it was turned off?

Choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu and provide /Volumes/ as the path.

  • Missing Recovery partition after restoring full TM backup

    Hello everyone,
I have a question for you Time Machine gurus. I have looked at pondini.org but could not find the answer. It is very possible I have overlooked it.
    Here is the scenario:
Macbook Pro with Lion 10.7.2. I connected 1TB USB drive. Formatted it.
Rebooted while holding Option+R. Had two options: Main Drive and Recovery HD. Took Main Drive.
Ran full TM machine backup to the external.
Rebooted while holding Option+R. Had three options: Main Drive, Recovery HD and TM Backup. Took TM Backup. It worked fine, everything looked good.
The next step may not make sense to you, but I have been having some performance issues with the MBP, so I decided to format the main drive and recover it from the TM backup so that the data would be contiguous. I have read countless articles in favor or against doing this. I just thought it made sense, based on many articles I read here.
I then, while running from the TM backup, formatted my main drive.
Next I did a full recovery of the main drive from the TM backup. Everything worked just fine and I am running ok at this time. Not sure it helped performance yet, but here is the question:
Once I reboot the system holding Option+R after the recovery, I only have two options: Main Drive and TM backup. Recovery HD is gone. So it seems that was either not backed up to TM to begin with or not recovered to the Main Drive during the full recovery. Any ideas? The goal was to have it still there in the Main Drive, although with a full TM backup I would not really need it unless I am away from my external, which could happen.
    Thanks for ideas or suggestions.
    M

You don't need to hold the R key.  Option invokes the Startup Manager, which shows all bootable volumes.
Or, you can hold Cmd+R to start from the Recovery HD on your Mac.
Once I reboot the system holding Option+R after the recovery, I only have two options: Main Drive and TM backup. Recovery HD is gone.
That's correct.  A full restore erases the entire OSX volume, including the Recovery HD.  (Just why it takes the Recovery HD isn't clear, but it does).
The only way to get a new one is to download a fresh copy of Lion, via the Recovery HD on the TM drive.
Once it's there, you can copy it to another drive if you want.  See:  OS X Lion: About Lion Recovery Disk Assistant (but you can't copy the one on your Time Machine drive).

  • TS1277 Original TV episode files are missing & I haven't even watched it yet?

My original file is missing and I can't play a tv episode I downloaded.
It comes up with ......"The TV show “The American Dream” could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?".
I then do a search on my hard drive and I can't find it.
    Things to note:
    • I've previously downloaded episodes and watched them without a problem, it's not an authorisation issue.
    • No, I haven't been 'cleaning up' my Mac and deleting folders etc. Plus I'm the only one who uses this computer.
    • Within the iTunes receipt it has a 'Report a Problem' link, but when I click on it, it goes to a "Server not Found" error page (onya iTunes!!!)
    • I went to try and download it again, but it's faded out, showing I've downloaded it and won't let me do it again.
    • Also, when I went to a previous episode I've already watched, I got the same 'missing original file' message. I purchased theses episodes, not rented them.
    • I've also downloaded another episode which I haven't yet watch (the one after the one that is missing) and there isn't a problem there.
Would love your help. Addicated to the show (Shameless) and want to continue watching.
    Thanks.

I don't know how they've gone missing, but do those episodes show under the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page on your Mac's iTunes for redownloading ? :
If they do then they probably have 'downloaded' against them instead of the cloud symbol for redownloading (iTunes will be seeing the entries in your library and assuming that you have them somewhere and that there is no need to redownload them). In which case delete them from the TV Shows section of your iTunes library (where you are getting the 'unable to locate' message) and they should get the cloud symbol in that Purchased link
