Recovery of Ipod Music

Recently my wife took my ipod to her work and erased all the songs upon plugging in & installing a new version of itunes to her computer. At the same time, I got a new computer and do not have itunes downloaded on it. How do I salvage my songs that were previously on my ipod? If I install itunes again on my computer will that work or is there another way? I would really appreciate a solution.
Thanks so much!
Steve

This is why you should backup your music, Once the songs on the iPod are gone and the original source of music is gone (Your PC) than there is no way to get the music back, Like i've said before you could try asking Apple iTunes support if you can re-download the songs but there is no Guaranty of a yes

I had to do a complete recovery of my wife's computer. It appears my "drag" of Music folder prior to recovery did not complete. She has a working iPod with everything on it. How do I get the iPod music, podcasts, and such, back into a brand new and clean and blank  itunes?

    Brendan,
These links will give you several methods of recovering whatever songs remain on your iPod; some free, some third-party software, some more comprehensive for restoring playlists, ratings, playcounts, etc. Read them and their associated links before deciding on a strategy that works for you. There are many various third-party software programs that will offer a more robust process, or an easier GUI. Do a Google search for them if the links below leave you wanting…
Don King Resurrected: Deleted files from hard drive (free user steps – music recovery only)
MacMuse: Computer Crashed (free user steps – music recovery only)

Copying Songs from Your iPod to a Mac or PC (resource for 3rd party software)
    iPodRip Software
    PodUtil Software

XPlay Photo Browser (For recovering Photos)
After recovering your song files, strongly consider developing a thorough backup strategy for just this type of situation.
You need at least three sets of your music:
-- One full set on the PC within iTunes (on internal HD or ExHD)
-- One full set on an separate external backup medium (CD/DVD/ExHD/other)
-- One (full or partial) set on the iPod
Music files on just the iPod and the computer is not considered having any backup. If you cannot store your complete music files on the computer, then create and maintain two external sets.
Backup both the music files and the Library database file (iTunes Library.itl). What are the iTunes Library files?

you can connect the iPhone to your mac and import those iPhone photos and videos to iPhoto assuming you have iPhoto. You can create a folder and export all those photos to the Finder. Keep safe somewhere.  Also keep the iPhoto library for safe keeping. When you restore your iPhone you can sync all those photos back to the iPhone. so you will lose nothing. Just remember when you export from iPhoto select jpeg for photos and original for videos taken with the iPhone.

You can transfer iTunes purchases by:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
Most other stuff by the third-party programs discussed here:
    Best iPod to PC
However, your app data such as saved games will be lost unless you have a backup file from your old computer.

I chose to restore it to factory defaults, but that never succeeded.

    Already for 40 minutes.
    I closed down iTunes.
Now, when I turn on my iPod, there is the icon of iTunes with an usb cable towards it.
When I attach it to my computer and turn on iTunes, the message is there that a iPod was stuck in recovery mode and I should retry it.
And then I get the same story. Unpacking, installing, checking... blocked!
