Recovery of serial number of ipod touch

My son's ipod touch went missing this past spring. We have been told who has the ipod but I want the serial number to prove that this ipod is my son's before accusing the person of taking it. The computer that my son had his itunes on has crashed so I can't get the serial number off of that, the receipt has completely faded and is unreadable. We have made purchases through my son's itunes account, is there any way to get the serial number from the itunes store or some other way through his itunes account? I just want to say again that we do not have access to the computer that his ipod was connected to when we had it.

Thank you all for trying to help. I do believe I am screwed. The item was purchased at Costco apparently they do not track serial numbers although I find that hard to believe since the serial number was on the original receipt you just can't read it anymore because the ink faded. Apple says they can't help me although I don't believe that either because the guy said "I just did a quick search on your name and didn't find anything". I have one of the most common last names there is so I don't believe he did a **** thing.

Someone stole my grandson's ipod touch, and the police are wanting the serial number. My grandson registered his ipod touch from my computer, and it is synced to my computer. He has bought several apps from iTunes from my computer. His parents never wrote down the S/N and Grandson doesn't know where the box is. Do any of you have any ideas of who would have this s/n for us or where I can find the serial number in my computer software?

Go into iTunes, select edit, then preferences. Go to the device tab, and hover your mouse cursor over a recent backup, and the serial number should pop up.

No app is required.

iTunes
Connect iPod to your computer.
When iPod appears in iTunes, select it on the left side of the iTunes window under Devices.
Click the Summary tab, and your iPod's serial number will display on screen. For iPod shuffle (1st and 2nd generation), click the Settings tab.
If your iPod is not currently connected to your computer, but has been connected to your iTunes library before, follow these instructions:
Hold down the Control key and choose Help > About iTunes (Windows) or iTunes > About iTunes (Mac).
Release the Control key.
As the iTunes and QuickTime version information scrolls, you will see the serial number of the last connected iPod as well as the last connected iPhone's serial number and IMEI.
Tips:
Hold down the Option key (Shift key in Windows) to reverse the scrolling.
Press the Space bar to pause the scrolling.
You can copy this information to the Clipboard and and paste it into a document.
In Mac OS X, choose Edit > Copy (or Command-C).
In Windows, press Control-C.
Note: In iTunes, when you view the iPod serial number, you can choose Edit > Copy to put the serial number on the Clipboard. You can then paste the serial number into an email or web page (for registration, for example).
