Recovery options for NOARCHIVELOG

Hi there
Can anybody tell me what are the recovery options available for a Database which is running in NOARCHIVELOG mode.
For example, Tablespace Point-In-Time Recovery (TSPITR) can be done with a Database running in NOARCHIVELOG mode? Like that can any body tell me what are the other recovery options that can be done in ARCHIVELOG mode and in NOARCHIVELOG mode.
TIA
Aqueel.

I recently got myself a U460 notebook.  I didn't even notice it was missing an optical drive - my fault, I missed it in the display unit.
Anyway, in the event of a HDD crash 2-3 years down the road, what kind of recovery options do I have?  Can I:
Boot from a USB connected external CD drive?
Perform One Key recovery even with a new HDD?
    Others?

Whats the best recommended practice to rectify these problems?. I would minimize the data loss as much as possible. I could use REPAIR_ALLOW_DATA_LOSS to repair but worried
about the dataloss. Trying to figure out any other better alternate approach available?.
    I90Runner

There are so many good articles which talks about such issues at length.
I got this snapshot for you:
If any errors are reported by DBCC CHECKDB, we recommend restoring the database from the database backup instead of running REPAIR with one of the REPAIR options. If no backup exists, running repair corrects the errors reported. The repair option to use
is specified at the end of the list of reported errors. However, correcting the errors by using the REPAIR_ALLOW_DATA_LOSS option might require deleting some pages, and therefore some data.
Under some circumstances, values might be entered into the database that are not valid or out-of-range based on the data type of the column. DBCC CHECKDB can detect column values that are not valid for all column data types. Therefore, running DBCC
CHECKDB with the DATA_PURITY option on databases that have been upgraded from earlier versions of SQL Server might reveal preexisting column-value errors. Because SQL Server cannot automatically repair these errors, the column value must be manually updated.
If CHECKDB detects such an error, CHECKDB returns a warning, the error number 2570, and information to identify the affected row and manually correct the error.
The repair can be performed under a user transaction to let the user roll back the changes that were made. If repairs are rolled back, the database will still contain errors and must be restored from a backup. After repairs are completed, back up the database.
There is always some good practices to follow:
    1. Maintain at-least two set of backup types.
    2. Maintain never fail Backup Validation at Local DR and DR location for the backup you do for databases.
    3. Maintain some Backup review process for all of these on daily\weekly\yearly basis.
    4. Add job to do DBCC CheckDB on weekend at -least for you while adjusting with rebuild\upd stats job which might be already for you.
Now, if you have time to correct this issues, wherein you have made sure that this issue really exists then do following things:
    1. Identify the objects which are marked as corrupted and check where DBCC is saying corrupted and why and make a note of that.
    2. Take a backup of the database and restore on any dev\testing server and check these objects and whether you can restore with T-sql option like data from original table to temp table and drop\create table again. As mentioned above pointer may help you.
This way you will be able to recover database to  a great extent which was stopping from helicopter snap of DBCC CheckDB.
Let me know, how it goes for you.

  • Recovery option for repository database

    Hi,
Currently we use IDM primariy for moving data from databases to AD, all the source data are stored in the source databases. We need to decide if we are going to use Oracle Data Guard for recovery of teh repository database. Any suggestion on this? How are you setting up recovery for the repository database?

  • Recovery Options for Toshiba Satellite L300-07N Model No. PSLBBC-07N019

Can anybody help me on how I can get the drivers of myToshiba Satellite L300-07N Model No. PSLBBC-07N019. Unfortunately I was not able to create my recovery disc when it crashed. Thanks.

Normally you hold down the 0 (zero) key while powering up the system to invoke the hard drive based recovery process.  Specifics are covered in your User's Guide which is on your hard drive in Adobe Acrobat Format or can be downloaded from the Canadian Product Support Site for your model.

If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

  • GW7 server recovery options for users mailbox

    Good morning,
we need to restore a users mailbox from a GW7 server. By now we have recovered the (linux) server running the groupwise domain into a virtual box.
In order to mount the domain it appears that i need edirectory credentials. Q: Is it possible to access a users mail account without restoring the edirectory server as well? Or maybe i can simply copy some datafiles and try to open them with a gw client??
    Thanks for your comments,

You could do it "the old fashioned way". Restore the PO directory structure,
and then run a POA against that location. Log in as the user and archive
everything. There is a general PDF about this here -

If your data loss meets the above criteria then please:
open a support case with Western Digital
open a support case with Apple
If you are an Apple developer then please submit a defect report to Apple.
More reported cases = more attention by both Western Digital and Apple.
Please report your data loss on these forums, the WD community forums and here with the following information:

  • Planning Disaster Recovery Site for SAP ERP ECC 6.0

    Dear All,
I am planning for DR ( Disaster Recovery ) Site. Our current environment is
    Production Site
    OS        : AIX 5.3
    DB        : IBM DB2      version 8.2
    SAP      : SAP ERP 6.0 ECC 6
    Disaster Recovery Site
    OS        : AIX 6.1
    DB        : IBM DB2      version 9.5
    SAP      : SAP ERP 6.0 ECC 6
I have following confusion in planning the solution.
1 - If I export the data at db level from production site and import that data in DR Site ...  than DR Site will be equivalent to Production Site or not.
2 - if answer of point 1 is yes then for SAP DR ...  HADR is the best solution or there is any other better solution exist.
    regards
    Syed Saifuddin

    Hello Syed,
If you export from the prod db and import into the disastor recover db then they will be the same provided that SAP environment is all the same. I would recommend that you update the prod side to the same db2 release and fixpack level as soon as possible though as 9.5 (or even better 9.7) has some advanced features that make administration alot easier and save much space.
HADR would be the best setup for disaster recovery in db6 environment.
Check the following documentation which should answer most of your queries.

  • Age of laptop for recovery options

I bought a used laptop that has two OS on it - Windows 8.1 (some issues with this) and Ubuntu. It is set up as a duel boot system. I want to completely reinstall this laptop to the original factory settings of Vista Home Premium. From what I understand, there may be a Recovery partition that can be used to do this depending on how old this laptop is.
Is there some way of finding out how old the laptop is based on the serial number and, if so, can you please direct me to where I would go to find this out? Thank you!

My guess is that in setting up the dual boot all hope of recovering from that partition was removed. But see the section System Recovery Options, which begins on p. 3-8 of the User's Manual (attached).
You can order the recovery discs from Toshiba by calling 800-663-0378.

  • There is a conflicting setting for recovery options (Removeable Device)

    Greetings All,
We are so close to having MBAM fully working.  In what I hope to be the last post on MBAM issues, I am working to resolve an issue with removable devices and enforced encryption.  As it stands the OS drive is fully encrypting automatically as it
should without issue, and the system is reporting back to MABM correctly.  When it comes to removable devices, the answer is a little different.  You insert a USB thumb drive and Windows 7 correctly makes the device read-only and offers to encrypt
it for you to allow full access.  But if tell it to perform the encryption, you get the following error.
There are conflicting settings for recovery options.  When a recovery password is required, backup to active directory should be turned on or the user should be required to save the recovery password.
As it stands, I do not have backup into AD turned on as I want info backed up to MBAM.  But in testing I did turn on the option to have it backup to AD for remove devices only and had the same result.
I am also including a link (to large to put in post) to a copy of my GPO for MBAM (properly sanitized) for review and would appreciate any thoughts or insight.
    MBAM GPO Settings

When you makes changes to the MBAM policies, it will automatically makes changes to the equivalent bitlocker policies (In-built). I am guessing that the MBAM policy settings which you have defined for Removable drives has not been reflected to the bitlocker
    policies.
As in the GPO, you can see if you have made changes to settings of the OS Drives (Windows Components/MDOP MBAM (BitLocker Management)/Operating System), it has made
equivalent changes to bitlocker policies (Windows Components/BitLocker Drive Encryption/Operating System Drive). Same
should happen for the removable drives also.
I would rather suggest to delete the MBAM GPO settings for the removable drives and then again define the settings and look for the changes in the bitlocker policies.
    Let us know the result.
Also you don't have to define this particular GPO settings:
Require additional authentication at startup (Windows Server
    2008 and Windows
    Vista)

  • Are there any recovery tools for optical media?

I've had a couple of DVD's  turned in to coasters recently and I was hoping that Linux could come to my rescue with some awesome 'raw-read' / recovery tools for optical media?
I burnt the discs in Windows 7 using InfraRecorder on a brand new Plextor drive (a 'PX-891SA') and these are my first attempts to burn discs with it so I'm a bit worried it could be a hardware fault!
I started off trying to back up some files to clear some space on my hard-drive, burning them to a dual-layer dvd, but the software kept failing to even start the burn process -- that was until I realised that I needed to run the program "as Administrator" (in Windows). It did then manage to burn the disc (I was using "Session-at-Once" mode) however when it came to the end of the burn process / the start of the 'verify data' phase it threw an error saying the write process had failed! Windows couldn't access the disc / data and (I think) still thought the disk was empty. So I restarted the burning application and used a function to just 'close' the whole disc. This seemed to work because Windows was then able to recognise the disc and read the data, although accessing the disc was slow and sounded 'stutter' ish.
I then tried to write a single layer dvd to finish off the last couple of gig I had to back up, but again the software completed the burn phase only to report a 'fail' error right at the end (I'm assuming) before finalising the disc. Although this time I'd tried to create a multi-session disc by using the '2XXA' (or something) 'Multi-Session' iso9660 format. The result was that Windows couldn't read the disc and still thought it was empty, even after trying a forced 'close disc' operation! -- Linux however could read the disc and see that the data had in fact been burnt to the disc (although I've not yet tried copying it in Linux!).
Finally I needed to burn a load of archives to a couple of discs (totaling ~9GiB) -- starting with a dual-layer dvd first everything seemed to be working fine, the burn process started okay and the write buffer was full etc., until at what I assume was the layer change-over it all came to a grinding halt and threw another 'write operation failed' error, only this time I can't even mount the disk in Linux....see 'dmesg | tail' output below:
    [ 5758.353005] ISO 9660 Extensions: Microsoft Joliet Level 3
[ 5758.353015] ISOFS: Interleaved files not (yet) supported.
    [ 5758.353016] ISOFS: File unit size != 0 for ISO file (1472).
[ 5758.353019] ISOFS: changing to secondary root
[ 5758.353035] ISOFS: Interleaved files not (yet) supported.
    [ 5758.353036] ISOFS: File unit size != 0 for ISO file (1536).
[ 5758.353037] isofs_fill_super: root inode is not a directory. Corrupted media?
Does anyone have any thought or suggestions that might help?
    - Is it likely to be a hardware fault? (I bought a Plextor because I thought they were one of the best!)
Maybe even if I could just close the session all would not be lost?
    -- Thanks in advance --

@chris_l -- yeah I was worried that might be the case, still I'm not sure if that explains why it keeps failing the burn process part way through?
I've tried this and that in Linux but without much luck. I'm still quite a noob with a lot of Linux things and this is the first time I'm trying anything to do with optical disks/drives etc. so I'm learning as I go...
The disk that failed in Windows but was 'readable' in Linux did just pass a run through ddrescue -- i.e. it created an output file okay and did not report any errors in the process.
However when I mounted the resulting image and tried to copy the files across the first folder reported an "input/ouput error" (just using gui copy+paste in Thunar file manager)
...the other folders did copy okay though!
It seems as though it's the lead-in / lead-out and disc finalizing process that are the main fail points with the burn operation. I don't know if InfraRecorder is any good or likely to be the problem? Anyway the drive cam with Nero (inc. Linux version) so might give either or both of these a go too, if they don't work either then at least I wont be short of something to rest a mug o' tea on
@ chris_l (again) -- the Plextor drives do have a "Vari-Rec" feature which allows a user to 'tweak' the laser power / output level so I might try this too.
@alphaniner -- thanks I've not seen this package before, I'm guessing it's a bit like cdparanoia but for dvds?!
    Thanks for the help!
(pre-post) UPDATE >>> I've just mounted my Windows partition  in Linux so I'll have a crack at burning the files using cdrtools before I resort to throwing the dvd drive out of the window and chasing it around the yard with a lump hammer

  • System Recovery Kit for dv7-3165dx fails to restore factory image to replacement hd

I'm posting this wall of text here in case someone else has any suggestions before I contact HP Support to see what options they have.
My attempt to recover the factory image to a replacement hard drive in an HP Pavilion dv7-3165dx notebook is failing. An error occurs when SM.exe is trying to merge the WIM files. The SSRD.Log shows an error:
SM, 13, Set reference file fail
after that, SM.exe displays this message when run from a command line:
SM, Failure, Can not load imagex 1 from src WIM file
The following are the symptoms that the Recovery Manager displays on the screen.
The Recovery Manager reads the two DVDs and after a few seconds, it pops up an error message:
    Reducer
    C:\RM\Image\TempBASE.WIM was not found.
The message has on "OK" button that when clicked on, closes the message window.
After that, nothing happens. No disk or DVD activity for over an hour. The mouse moves, but no key presses have any effect, including CTRL-ALT-DEL. You can use the mouse to move the Recovery Manager window around, and there is nothing hidden behind it. Clicking on the Recovery Manager Back, Next, or Cancel buttons produce no response at all.
The only option at this point is to hold down the power switch until it powers down.
When the power is turned back on, the hard drive boots and Recovery Manager displays a message that incorrectly claims "Recovery is complete" and has a "Click Finish to restart" button. After clicking on "Finish", it reboots but since the System Recovery did not actually complete, all it does is display:
    BOOTMGR is missing
    Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart
Before attempting the recovery, the notebook passed all diagnostic tests.
The 2x2GB memory cards, which still have HP stickers on them, were tested with Memtest86+ V5.01 and completed over six passes in over seven hours with zero errors.
The replacement 500GB HGST Travelstar Z5K500 drive was tested with gsmartcontrol. The SMART status showed no errors in the past with over 400 hours of power-on time. Both of the SMART short self-test and extended self-test tests were run, which it passed without any errors.
The HP System Diagnostics from the Startup Menu were run on the memory and hard drive and they passed those tests without any errors.
While waiting for the HP "System Recovery Kit for Consumer Notebook (3 Disks)" Software Part Number 599357-001 to arrive, both Fedora 21 64bit and Windows Vista 64bit were successfully installed on the harddrive.
Both System Recovery DVDs were read on different machines without any errors. This System Recovery Kit supports the notebook's System Id which is 3638, so they appear to be the correct discs.
Now a list of workaround attempts that were suggested.
After the Recovery Manager failed a few times with the same error message, some googling came up with other users mentioning the "TempBASE.WIM was not found" error message. I tried these suggestions that I read about.
Run KillDisk to fill the HD with zeros.
Running Recovery Manager after that failed with the same error message.
Run the CyberLink Recovery Discs Utility (sp44645.exe).
Running Recovery Manager after that failed with the same error message.
Installed Windows VISTA 64bit again and upgraded the BIOS from F10 to F13.
Running Recovery Manager after that failed with the same error message.
Try only using a single 2GB memory card to see if it was a 64bit problem.
Running Recovery Manager after that failed with the same error message.
The BIOS does not have an option to change from AHCI mode to IDE mode.
I don't have a Windows 7 OEM install disc and am trying to avoid spending $100 to buy one.
That is when I decided that it is not a PC hardware problem, but a problem with the HP System Recovery Kit. Here are the details of what I think the Kit is doing.
After running Recovery Manager and getting the error message, instead of just re-booting and letting the "Recovery is complete" message appear, I re-booted with a Linux USB drive and inspected what was on the hard drive.
    fdisk -l shows this:
    Disk /dev/sda: 465.8 GiB, 500107862016 bytes, 976773168 sectors
    Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes

    I/O size (minimum/optimal): 4096 bytes / 4096 bytes
    Disklabel type: dos

    fsarchiver probe shows this:
    [======DISK=] [=============NAME====] [====SIZE==] [MAJ] [MIN]
    [sda                     ] [HGST HTS545050A7                ]  [  465.76 GB] [     8] [     0]

Running gparted shows about 200 MB of unallocated space before the sda1 NTFS partition. The rest of the disk is unallocated after the bootable sda2.
The sda1 NTFS partition has a \SSRD.Log file and an empty \RM\Image directory.
The sda2 FAT32 partition has the Recovery Manager application files in it:
    /mnt/sda2:
    total 400
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 15 Apr 9 23:36 SDV.FLG
    drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 Apr 9 23:36 SYSTEM.SAV
    drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Nov 1 2009 BOOT
    drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Nov 1 2009 EFI
    drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Nov 1 2009 SOURCES
    drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Jul 27 2009 TOOL
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 383562 Jul 13 2009 bootmgr
The SOURCES directory has boot.wim, and the TOOL directory has all the programs, like Reducer.exe and SM.exe, in it.
After shutting down the Linux system and rebooting, the Recovery Manager then boots from sda2 and displays the "Recovery is complete" message and "Click Finish to restart" button. During this process, it removes the sda2 partition and marks the sda1 NTFS partition as the active bootable partition. When the PC restarts, all that is left is the sda1 NTFS partition with the empty C:\RM\Image directory and the SSRD.Log file, so there is no BOOTMGR to boot with.
The SSRD.Log file logs the tasks that the Recovery Manager performs.
The Recovery Manager runs some initialization tasks and then reads the two System Recovery DVDs. It then calls MergeWimFile which runs SM.exe and starts to merge BASE.WIM with the other BASE*.WIM files. SM.exe merges 20 WIM files with log entries like these:
    SM, Success, refName= C:\RM\IMAGE\BASE22.WIM
    SM, Success, refName= C:\RM\IMAGE\BASE23.WIM
    SM, Success, refName= C:\RM\IMAGE\BASE3.WIM
    SM, Success, refName= C:\RM\IMAGE\BASE4.WIM
    SM, Success, refName= C:\RM\IMAGE\BASE5.WIM
    SM, Success, refName= C:\RM\IMAGE\BASE6.WIM
    SM, Success, refName= C:\RM\IMAGE\BASE7.WIM
Then, with only two WIM files left, BASE8.WIM and BASE9.WIM, the log shows:
SM, 13, Set reference file fail
This must be when Recovery Manager pops up the "Reducer C:\RM\Image\TempBASE.WIM was not found" error message.
    That narrowed down the problem.
I copied all of the WIM files and the TOOLS directory to a Windows 8.1 system. The two DVDs did not have any errors while being read. Running SM.exe from an admin Command Prompt with the same parameters that were logged in the SSRD.Log produced the same error message. There was an additional error message that appeared in the Command Prompt window:
SM, 13, Set reference file fail
SM, Failure, Can not load imagex 1 from src WIM file
and the TempBASE.WIM was not created.
SM.exe /? did not provide a help message. I could not find any documentation on the SM.exe command.
If I removed three of the WIM files, (BASE7.WIM BASE8.WIM BASE9.WIM) then SM.exe could create the TempBASE.WIM file, but it would fail while merging index 2 of 3 with this message:
SM, 11%, Merge index 2 of 3 Processing
    SM, Failed, Export image failed
The TempBASE.WIM is 3,421,518 KB in size after that.
This is where I came to a dead end and cannot think of anything else that I can do. Maybe I'm missing something obvious, but it appears to me that there was some kind of error building this System Recovery Kit and it is not able to perform a factory install on this notebook.
    ps
If I can figure out how to add an attachment, I will add the SSRD.Log file.  If not, then ask and I will post it as a followup.

Downloaded Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit which contains the latest imagex program.
Running imagex.exe on the BASE7.WIM file on the second System Recovery DVD:
    imagex.exe /info K:\PRELOAD\BASE7.WIM
    ImageX Tool for Windows
    Version: 6.2.9200.16384
    Error opening file [K:\PRELOAD\BASE7.WIM].
    The data is invalid.
The same error message is shown for BASE7.WIM, BASE8.WIM, and BASE9.WIM.
The other WIM files in the PRELOAD directory, BASE5.WIM, BASE6.WIM, BASE10.WIM, BASE13.WIM, BASE15.WIM, BASE17.WIM and BASE23.WIM, could be read by imagex without any errors.
